  • What do The Moon, Van Gogh, and getting thrown out of Times Square by the NYPD have in common? In this talk, Dustin takes us on his journey in Astronomy, and how looking up led him to a life mission of expanding perspectives utilizing backyard technology most people don't know exists.
Dustin Gibson is a published astrophotographer and entrepreneur. He is a co-owner and CEO of Oceanside Photo & Telescope, the largest telescope retailer in the world with multiple appearances on the Inc. 5000 list. Dustin has assisted multiple professional government and educational institutions, including NASA, JPL, and MIT. Gibson is also an appointed council member of the Middle Georgia Economic Advisory Council. He is involved in multiple organizations that work towards transforming astronomy and astrophotography, including co-founding Radian Telescopes and OurSky AI. How can one best get started? I don’t know where to even begin in buying a backyard telescope, let alone how to take my Sony DSLR and take photos. Any resource tips?

Has your love for the stars influenced your belief in astrology? As in is that something you’ve ever studied? Great Ted Talk btw thank you for sharing!

@@deashiarogers2036 My mother was very interested in astrology, while my interests have leaned more toward astronomy. I know many astronomers get frustrated by astrology, as a disservice to science, and I can understand their point of view as educators. I do however recognize the appeal of astrology. I think astrology celebrates the creativity of humans in a wonderful way whereas Astronomy celebrates the creativity of the Universe and human willingness to pit ourselves against even the most difficult challenges.

One of the best Ted talks I’ve ever heard. Living in light pollution has taken away a part of our history, but talks like this remind us of what we once had but have lost. Talks like this remind us that the universe is still there, waiting to be discovered.

Sometimes we need to step back and appreciate where we are in the evolution of our species. Dustin urges us to take that step and, in the middle of our mundane everyday lives, be inspired by the vastness of the universe and the new ability for everyone to see it through their own home telescopes. We need this reminder. Thanks, Dustin. Great job!
