- Hey all, so with the nostalgia about jerseys from the past running high right now, I figured why not look at each team (minus Vegas and Seattle) and decide who got it right initially and who improved their look since then?

I loved the foot on the Avalanche jersey. I also love that Adam Foote wore it. So many feet on one guy.
As a kid, I thought the foot shoulder patch was there because of Foote. 😅

Current Ducks jersey is one of the more “blah” looks in all of sports. That logo is just a non-starter. If they went back to the original logo people would go bananas for it
That old logo is super marketable too. Down under, more people recognise “the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim” as opposed to the “Anaheim Ducks”, probably more as a result of the film but cmon, a team based off of a classic sports film with such an endearing hold in sports pop culture? Tell me that would not got fans, or at least jersey sales worldwide.
I actually kinda dig the color scheme, it seems to work for me. Probably helps that nobody else is similar so it always feels unique. Logo though, I agree, is absolute meh. I feel the same with the Stars D we have nowadays. IMHO, if you gave the ducks the old mask logo, even if slightly modified for legal reasons or whatever there may be, they'd have a sick looking jersey. Not as awesome as the old purple, but a fine substitute.
Well then buy their alternate that has the old logo lol. I don’t see them ever going back to Eggplant full time. I can see their orange becoming their home and the rumoured white version of their alt for the RR becoming their away uniform.

I did love the Stars original set...they were one of those rare teams with a mismatched set where both looked really good (like Montreal or Detroit)

Old Dallas Stars jersey--Dallas over the star--with the current Kelly Green scheme. LA needs to go full purple with a crown.
LA King sweaters are now ugly and boring. I always loved the silver and black they wore in the 90's.

The Minnesota wilds logo is a bear. Obviously they were the North Stars before, but in a way they still are.
The eye of the bear is a star (north star) the North Star is part of the constellation Ursa Major, which is the bear constellation. Ursa Major means "Big bear." It’s a super clever logo, and might be the most meaningful logo in all sports.
I think the orange ducks jersey with the old logo is their best one. I don't know why they don't make that the official jersey. It's gorgeous. The current ducks jersey isn't horrible - it improved a lot when they dropped the lettering and just stuck with the logo only. The lettering was so small to read - I'm surprised that passed various marketing checks. Small text is generally considered bad because these jerseys need to be visible from large distances.
Ducks need to make their 25th anniversary jersey their main kit, it's fantastic
The original was the best. Their current jerseys are devoid of character.
I think the main issue of the Columbus jerseys are just that they seem so generically “America”. I do like that the state flag is on the new one, it’s neat although if you didn’t know, you’d probably think it’s just a weird American flag. The cannon, as much as I don’t like seal-like logos, I think gives them much more distinct of an identity.
As for Dallas, bring back that star lining like that’s incredible why they gotta get rid of that and basically just do a green blackhawks template
Exactly. It's so bland. Columbus has no team identity. They are called the blue jackets but their branding is just state flag stuff. They should be leaning into actual blue jackets stuff more instead of trying to appeal to some kind of generic state pride.
I don't think the Ducks ever go back to the purple and jade but I am thinking they are pivoting towards making their orange mighty ducks look the primary look with the reverse retro rumored to be a white version of that, and with next year being the 30th anniversary season. That sounds like a win-win to me as a Ducks fan if we can't get the original look back, as I love the orange jerseys

As an Avs fan, I love the subtle changes they’ve made over the years, and I actually love the CO on the shoulder, but I would like to see one of those replaced with the old Bigfoot logo. I’m still trying to get used to the blue helmets and pants…very weird.
I respect your opinion, and initially shared it. Seeing highlights with the black gear just seems off to me after watching the full season. For context I have been a fan since the played their first game at McNichols Arena. I still think it could be tweaked but It's better than the black that was only used in the away numbers. I still dream that they will use burgundy gear for the away gear! I hope you enjoy the upcoming season!

What still gets me is the advertisements on each team's helmet now. I enjoy the blue the Avs use now though
Nashville is probably the one I’d want to go back the most. They could somewhat fix things with blue helmets. The all gold look is hideous

That was one I felt nostalgia with from when I was younger. Not a Nashville fan but I definitely like that over just yellow/gold.
Never a fan of Nashville's jersey's. Pretty boring for colour, but logo is okay.
I've been a Leaf fan since the 50's and I think their current jersey is the best one yet.
All I have to say is, I’m glad the Flyers had quickly ditched that silver “3D logo” for the 02/03 alternate jersey 🤮
As a Kings fan, I think many of us prefer the late 80's/early90s chevy shield logo. The rest of the jersey, I think is fine. Though yeah, more purple is always better!
Yes I'm a flames fan, but the flaming C is one of the best logos in sports.
The white jersey is one of the best in sports. Home jersey has too much red.
Never liked the Sabres changing to the Black and Red Adelphi Corporate colors. When the Regis’s adopted the orange prison colors I was concerned that the Sabres would change too, but calmer heads prevailed and they went back to the Blue and gold. Thanks for the cool video.

Purple is a color associated w/ royalty, there for I think the Kings should use it as well as the crown. I can appreciate the Ducks owners using gold (The Golden State) and orange (Orange County), but I still prefer the egg plant and teal from the original jersey. That being said, I like the look of the 2018/2019 retro 3rd jersey best. San Jose got it right straight out of the gate.
I greatly prefer the Rangers earlier jerseys, with forced perspective on the lettering and numbers. The flat block lettering is boring.

The Blues have gotten their jerseys right everytime... that is my opinion of course, but I feel like it may be a popular one.
My understanding is that the those '90s red-yellow-blue ones weren't that popular, although growing up in that age, I have a soft spot in my heart for them ;)
I like the logo they've used on the 3rd jerseys recently (not sure if it was still the last couple years) with the Arch and city and all, but it would definitely not work as a 'main' logo. Looked great on a sweatshirt I had, until some leftover bleach at the laundromat got to it >:(
@@matthewryan9323 I personally like the 90s jerseys, they are kind of an oddball i get it. And the arch jersey was back when reebok had the jersey contract, I also liked that as an alternate.
Blues absolutely do it right, but, for this 70s kid, the white 90s was good. I have a Steve Duchesne. Not a fan of the roads. Too much red. I also hated the red reverse retro. Sorry.
The 80s jersey with st louis over the blue note & the 90s away jersey with the red triangle at the bottom are not my favorites.
I'm bias as a Seattle fan, they hit it out of the park on first go! Great design, color scheme, and should not change. Please experiment only with the third and reverse/retros!

Anaheim - loved the black and purple third jersey they used in 06 before they went black and gold
Arizona - always preferred the “classic”
Buffalo - the blue and yellow is the best
Boston - any black and yellow is iconic
Calgary - the 80’s red and yellow
Carolina - I like the old
Chicago - their current look is definitely iconic.
Colorado - bergundy looks better than red but I do miss the “foot”
Columbus - current is better
Dallas - I like either… maybe have green with “stars” instead of the “d”
Detroit - too iconic to change
Edmonton - 80’s blue and orange look… never change!
Florida - current
LA - I loved the Gretzky era jerseys, and was excited when they went back to black and silver… but I do think now they should use more “forum blue” template designs.
Minnesota - I could go either one… love the forest green.
Montreal - can’t go wrong with their iconic look.
Nashville - navy for home… I think their gold jerseys should be away instead of home…
New Jersey - the 90’s red and black.
NY Islanders - classic 80’s… the fisherman Jersey sucked.
NY Rangers - if it ain’t broke don’t fix it
Ottawa - I liked their red themed jerseys better than their black.
Philly - brighter orange
Pittsburg - the early 90s shirts with the skating penguin
San Jose - I prefer a potato sack… in all seriousness… the darker aqua
St Louis - current
Tampa - current
Toronto - current
Vancouver - prefer the blue and green stick and rink… loved the black and yellow skate jerseys but not the late 90’s orca sweaters.
Washington - current
Winnipeg - I agree… go to the throwbacks even though it wasn’t the same franchise.
I actually like the "Yawning Coyote" jersey better. But, I'm not from Arizona and the locals really love the original jersey because it ties to the Native American culture of the area. So, I understand why it's more popular. It's one of those looks that you don't understand until you start living in the area.
And I like the original Dallas Stars jerseys. One reason Stars fans like me have an adverse reaction to the current green and silver combination is that green and silver is the colors of the Philthadelphia Eagles. The Stars are my favorite hockey team, so I just have to adjust but I'd prefer to go back to the green and gold.
.....despite having a DEEP appreciation for Native American artistic styling, those inaugural Coyotes uniform designs are among THE worst EVER; zero color contrast - home black, just IMPOSSIBLE to distinguish between its elements from ANY closer than about two feet, BUSY logo looked CUBIST more than kachina and, just too much visual 'NOISE' all around.....I have a screen capture of what's a PERFECT compromise motif the artist submitted to 'Icethetics' some time ago, which incorporates the original 3rd's coyote head (even that alternate jersey though, doesn't resolve successfully) with maroon, sandstone - and if AZ were SMART, they'd be making him an OFFER for it ASAP.....
1# Anaheim Ducks go back to the MD logo
2# Arizona Coyotes keep the classic logo & jerseys. Much better then the uggly owling coyote and jerseys.
3# Buffalo Sabres go back to the angry bison look from 1996-2006
4# New York Islanders go back to the 96-97 jerseys but with-out the "Fisherman" logo.
5# Washington Capitals go back to the Diving Eagle logo and jerseys 1996-2002
6# Vancouver Canucks go back to the logo and colors from 1997-2007.
7# Pittsburgh Penguins go back to the "flying Penguin from 1992-2002 / but keep the classic as shoulder patch and vice versa.
8# Winnipeg Jets go back to the 1992-1996 logo and jersey style.
9# Dallas Stars go back to there original logo and Stanley Cup era jerseys from 1998-2006.
10# Florida Panthers go back to there original logo and jerseys - there current is so MAJOR bland.

The best was playing travel hockey and seeing all the different team jerseys. I played for the “oilers” and it was a replica of Edmonton with our team colors of course. I remember playing a team out of Michigan that had the Predators blue jerseys. Always thought they were pretty slick
When Vancouver joined the league I loved the sweater (rink with the hockey stick). I still do. For me, it established an identity; a bond if you will to the logo and the team. When the Canucks created different sweaters (as well as other expansion teams) with new logos, I lost some of the connection with the Canucks throughout their various sweater introductions and subsequently, a lack of identity. Nevertheless, you got to keep the market regenerated with purchase items for the fans; I suppose.
I live for the day when all 32 teams finally nail their design. I think we’re pretty close, and social media has helped teams get a feel for what people want
If it is, in fact, the coyotes’ eye looking forward w/half-face covered by a mask, as opposed to what I believed was a side profile of the coyotes face as it was looking to its right.. then the logo looks like 70% worse
Tampa Bay needs to bring back black as their primary color.
Tampa got their jerseys wrong on the second try…originals were better and unique.
Anaheim need old logo, orange jersey but no black, keep purple. Purple, orange and gold piping make sense for Southern California colors.

I like them too but only because they look so similar to the oilers. Islanders logo is a bit cheesy in my opinion.
My wife is Italian. She likes the original NJ Devils jersey because the colors match the Italian flag. I didn’t have an opinion either way. I was just thankful when my team (Islanders) abandoned the fisherman logo and went back to the original logo when they won four consecutive Stanley Cup titles. Not really fond of any of the other Islanders jerseys they wore when they played in Brooklyn.
I like how Vancouver and Buffalo do their jerseys. Vancouver with the current Orca C as home and away, the classic Stick in Rink as the alternate jersey, and the 90s Skate as a one off during the season.
Buffalo with the classic blue and yellow as home and away and the 90s-2006 Goat Head as the alternate. Both teams covering their good history of jerseys well.
I really like the Colorado home one, just wish they'd go back to the black/white numbers on the away ones. It's hard to see the blue on TV and doesn't really look good.
One thing I’ve always thought the Islanders could have done is use the Lighthouse Logo from the shoulder of the Fishsticks jersey. Would be a fun remix retro for the future.

Tampa’s current jerseys are probably my least favourite, I mean they look like a made up team with the leafs colours on a Detroit template and a very minimal logo, BUT they won. Back to back. I hate it, but I have to respect it now. Their third is so good though, why couldn’t they have won in that
I feel like I'm the only person who hates the Capitals screaming eagle. My favorite of theirs is their current third: the blue with a white W and red stars.

I think a lot of it is nowdays jerseys are so over the top. In the 90's and prior they were very simple, but sharp. I don't get why teams change theirs jerseys so much. The Wings, Hawks, Habs, Leafs etc are classics because they haven't changed them or made very minor changes over the years.
The Sharks for example nailed their original jerseys and since then they have gotten louder and louder and worse and worse in my opinion.
The sharks black jersey were so plain. Far from being considered loud. Way too much black, probably one of worst jerseys

Anaheim: ORIGINAL. As a little kid in the 90's, I LOVED the mighty ducks. I loved the teal and purple, Paul kariya and Teemu Selanne? Come on! Lets go!
Arizona: ORIGINAL. The kachina was pretty cheesy when I first saw it but it has definitely grown on me. The yawning dog is an accurate description. It's Yawny.
Boston: CURRENT. I would love to see a third jersey with brown and gold but I gotta say, their current Black and gold is so iconic and perfect.
Buffalo: ORIGINAL. I guess the original is the best look, hence why they returned to it, but I do also love the goat head look. It is pure nostalgia though, it's not their best look.
Calgary: ORIGINAL/CURRENT. Going back to their original look was absolutely the right call. The fact they wore the Black 'C' with alberta and Canada flags on the shoulders for as long as they did is insane to me. It was a very junior league look IMO.
Carolina: MEH. I've never liked any of the hurricanes looks. That being said, whenever they bring back the hartford whalers jersey, I want to give them all my money. The whalers had one of the best looks in hockey history.
Chicago: CURRENT. Probably the best logo in the league. Iconic jersey. No complaints other than the fact their team doesn't play well on the ice.
Colorado: CURRENT. Jersey Perfection.
Columbus: Just wear the cannon full time, what are you guys even doing...
Dallas: ORIGINAL. The old Stars logo without the Dallas wordmark is an absolute beauty. The current kelly green is also nice. Would love to see the old Stars logo with the current green. That would be a home run I think.
Detroit: CURRENT. Absolutely love the winged wheel. Gordie Howe.
Edmonton: ORIGINAL/CURENT. Back to the royal blues!!! STOKED to see my boys sporting the proper Oilers apparel. STOP EXPERIMENTING PLEASE.
Florida: ORIGINAL. Honestly I like both panthers looks but the original logo is much more captivating.
LA: ORIGINAL. Damn LA is hard. they've had some great looks. I loved the gretsky era look (for nostalgia reasons) but the pruple/gold just screams LA. The Kings hit it out of the park with the last reverse retro look. Best of both worlds.
Minnesota: CURRENT. I've never been a huge fan of the Wild's look but the new version is the cleanest. I agree the northstars colours would look better. Not a fan of Red and Green together. Christmas.
Montreal: CURRENT. A classic. Never change it.
Nashville: ORIGINAL. The current jerseys have way too much yellow. Looks ridiculous.
New Jersey: CURRENT. Fantastic logo and very balanced use of simple colours.
NYI: CURRENT. Classic look. A bit of a messy looking logo in my opinion, but a great look regardless.
NYR: CURRENT. Just a nice refined look on the original. Would love to see the shield on the front obviously but whatever.
Ottawa: CURRENT. Again, refining the original perfectly. I hope this team can become competitive with this look because it's dynamite.
Phillidelphia: ORIGINAL. Darker Orange absolutely. Just like the Oilers, the bright orange looks like a pylon.
Pittsburgh: CURRENT. I will say though that by far my favourite penguins look is the robo penguin in the late 90's.
San Jose: CURRENT. The current Teal is superior and I like the sharks look overall but I'm not a huge fan of logo's with hockey sticks incorporated in them. Scrap the stick and its a beauty.
St. Louis: ORIGINAL. I absolutely love the original blues colours. Nicer blue, simpler look. The new jerseys with the navy and stuff, looks a bit outdated.
Tampa: CURRENT? I do prefer the simpler look they use now, however, I'd like to see the old logo minus the work marks on a mostly blue jersey. They could keep a simpler look but make it a bit more interesting (and less maple leafs looking) with incorporating black/silver, with the blue.
Toronto: CURRENT. The leafs finally found their perfect look. I agree it is here to stay. Such a classic. Beautiful.
Vancouver: ORIGINAL. Man the canucks have had a lot of looks. And for nostalgia reasons, I love the skate logo. But honestly the blue/green just feels more 'vancouver' to me. Never liked the Orca logo much. The skate logo in blue and green would be wonderful.
Washington: CURRENT. Pretty boring look but the current jersey is much cleaner, that's for sure. I agree Shannon, would LOVE to see the capitol building eagle on the front. It's a brilliant logo design and such a shame they don't use it as primary logo.
Winnipeg: ORIGINAL. This one is easy. The old logo is a classic hockey look. The new logo just makes me think "Winnipeg Canadian Air Force Jets". The most corporate logo in the NHL. My favourite Jets logo was in the 90's before they moved.
Funny thing about Edmonton is that majority of people at the games will wear the orange ones… they look way cooler just cause they are different than everyone else
The Habs very first jersey was actually blue and white, not the barber shop jersey
I’m a Ducks fan. I UNDERSTAND how legendary the Mighty Ducks logo is, I like the webbed D jersey, granted the word mark when we won the Cup, was not the greatest

Same for me, becoming an Avs fan back when they started in Denver was totally based on their jerseys. 😁 As a Dutch kid I didn't knew a thing about hockey that much, but that burgundy and blue really caught my attention...and for good reason 😏. I never forget buying my first Avs Joe Sakic Starter jersey, man they were hard to get in the Netherlands. Good times 😄
The angry goat is literally one of my two favourite jerseys of all time very close to the Vancouver skate

imo DAL's old-style jersey that they had in the 90's -early 2000's was🔥 ...it should have never changed!! 1999 team will always have special place in my hockey heart. living in southern ontario, DAL 1999 was the 1st southern-based team to win the stanley cup. it was only weird geographically. the team itself was coming along and getting over the DET/COL heartbreaks.
about EDM i know after 1995/96 they changed it up. big mistake and i'm glad they are bringing the proper look for 22/23.
VAN jersey from 1978 imo i loved it. WSH old-school 1980's jersey was awesome, current jersey and the eagle jersey is a 👎🏼... um just think esa tikkanen in gm 2 1998 SCF wetting the bed LMFAOO 😉

Welcome to Wrexham ... that's a series you might can see on Hulu or Disney+ (it's different in different countries) ... about a Futball team .... In looking at them, I found that their team (and I guess most soccer) has two colors and sometimes a white jersey.
I wish the NHL would adopt such.

Yes, you have to coordinate - maybe a billion dollar league could handle some of that.
SO with Nashville, I'd pick these three colors:
+ Yellow
+ Navy Blue
+ Silver
No more white.
For Winnipeg I would imagine:
+ White
+ Blue
+ Light blue or red
Just make it where a game has a lighter and a darker color and it would look so much better than the forced white jerseys most teams have.
The OG Canes jersey aged gracefully when you look at the changes they made in 2013. The Adidas reboot is ok, but has grown blah since 2019. I used to like our current road set, as it is definitely unique, but I hate it now. I also don't care much for the team deciding to make the black jersey the home set. I like our black jersey, I really do, but it's always been tradition to wear all red at home (or away if it's pre-2003). That being said, I've heard the marketing dept is whipping up a new red jersey (rumors nothing more) and they have gone on record saying they have "something special planned" for the red jersey this season. I hope to God that means they're bringing the OG back
As a Canucks fan, I have lots of opinions about the jersey naturally, but if we aren’t going to use the skate as the main or use navy with the orca, I just really wish they’d play around with the proportions of the lines. The thin white lines bother me, it just feels more like a white outline to the green rather than committing to white because cascadia. And I really don’t like the away, same thing with the blue outlining the green stripe. The original orca had it going on, wish they just used that as a template but that’s my ten cents 😩

Every time I see that baby blue Pittsburgh jersey I think it is so fitting for Crosby. A game-worn non-contact jersey suits him.

I think for the Canes it will eventually change the look of PNC a bit too much for some, and that will see them come back to a red home, if they don't get it available in the store.

The Sabres original jersey/emblem is so unique because it had the city and the name of the team withOUT words - a Buffalo over the crossed Sabres. IMO perfect…(so unlike the team on the ice…over the last 15 seasons)

As a 'Yotes fan, I LOVED how they went back to Kachina as the main logo. BUT I did fall in love with the howling coyote over the years. So I hope they keep the howling logo, as the home alternative.
Perhaps for the retro look the Flyers could go back to the Cooperall pants .
I don't mind the newer look of the Florida Panther jerseys but for me, the original jersey was best. What really turned me off on the first redesign was the striping down and around the sleeve. Watch some old games when Jagr was on the team and you'll see what I mean. The striping now with the new logo is much better. But again, I like the original jersey best. The Panther reverse retro is great too!
As a TN native, and Preds fan I love the navy, and I miss it dearly. So, I agree with you... bring back the blue. Although, I will say growing up my favorite Jersey was the 2007-2011 version (aside from the mustard's of course). But that is probably just nostalgia.
This is related to the games, but why does Dallas have the jerseys that belong to the seals and barons in NHL22? None of those jerseys have anything to do with Dallas lol
Actually, they do have connection. The original Minnesota North Stars franchise (now Dallas Stars) had inherited the bulk of the Seals/Barons players when that franchise finally died.
Another interesting fact not known by most, is the Stars' connection to the San Jose Sharks franchise. That expansion draft was different than all others since - SJ actually got nearly half of the North Stars' roster, and then both teams made selections from among the unprotected players throughout the league.
As a Blues fan, I have always liked the 70's jerseys with the shoulder yokes. It could be because that's what they had when I was a kid, growing up, but shoulder yokes just look good to me.
Honestly The Flames have always had really nice Jerseys. I really love the 2000s look. The black adds some balance to the jersey where as the current jerseys are just a little too bright. Having a touch of black as an outline would go a long way. Or just an all black jersey always looks sexy

The Avalanche's best jersey was the one they wore in the early 2000's when they won their second cup. Their current jerseys are good but the foot patch needs to come back. I'd like foot on one side and C on the other side.

The red Habs and white Wings jerseys are likewise classics, and the Blues have created a classic of their own by muscling up their original design with judicious use of color and striping (a far cry from the red-tinged disasters of the 80s and especially the 90s).

I think the best Islanders jerseys are the ones from 97 I think? The fisherman one but with the classic logo. If they can clean those up and make them a bit more modern I feel like it could look pretty great

Black will return to Denver. I don't get the argument against the black stripes and gear for the Avalanche. Why not get rid of the black puck as well? Their current look feels incomplete. Same with Tampa Bay. The Goat is back in Buffalo...
They'll have an all black alternate too. Like the Lightning. It will sell. AC/DC can link in for "Back in Black" and a performance at the home opener.
The black stripes and pants on the Avs uniform help break up the uniform. I hope both come back but what we have now still looks good.

I think as far as logos go, the Leafs, Wings, and Flyers are my favorite.
Falcons logo against Blackhawks, is the “D”. Also had a “D” for the stadium series against Colorado. I like the red/brown we wore against Leafs.
We need to hit a home run with this years reverse retro.
The one thing about the current Stars jersey with me is that it is essentially a Blackhawks jersey but in green. Yes the striping isn't identical but the overall look is so similar I can understand why people don't think very highly of it.

I prefer when the teams went for unique colour combinations to make them more identifiable than the trend in the 90s-2000s where it felt a whole bunch of teams went with black.

The comments are all over the map... there's no way to make EVERYONE happy. ;P The Stars current green jersey is just a re-jig of the Blackhawks template... I would love it if they went back to the "Star" cut. (The black jersey that they brought to Dallas from Minnesota was as boring as heck, arguably worse than the boring-as-heck Reebok template they wore after the Star-cut.) But, I DO like their black thirds with the neon stripes. TIGHT!
