Reminds me of the live show at the stage AE for the sorceress tour. Mikael: "Mendez, what were you doing in 1988?" Mendez: *makes punching motion with arms* Mikael: "Oh so you were boxing children?"
I find this swedish accent, including the nervousness, very charming. But I also love the guy and his work. He reminds me of olofmeister in this interview (if you know who im referencing, you'd get it).
Martin Mendez's english deteriorates on each album cycle. Probably by the next 2 albums, there will be subtitles to understand him. But still a KICK-ASS bassist.
Dude, just by listening to the dude for the past decade his english has deteriorated. I Dont see it improving anytime soon, unless he takes up singing some lead vocals wit Mikael.
The reason these updates are boring is because we're not seeing any actual recording going on - obviously, so the band can keep other material under wraps and keep the anticipation up.
I don't think so. Even if both Opeth and Return to forever have a song with the same name the two pieces have little in common. RtF's is fairly funky a nd jazzy, Opeth's is kinda hard-prog. Not even the keys intro sounds quite similar to chick corea's playing
+LeonardMcrendall I agree, the two songs are very different. I noticed a little bit of jazzyness in the melody, and know Michael likes older music. That's really the only reason I thought there might be an influence. Anyways it sounds really good :)
who the hell came up with the idea of talking about instruments WITHOUT showing them, playing on them? so pointless. But as for Mr Martin Mendez, he rocks big time!
Nice! Thanks for answering. I asked about it because I've noticed a slight different intonation - it might have been (also) caused by the Swedish language mastering.
I once went 8 weeks mainly speaking English, and after that I started noticing some weird shit happening to my Norwegian intonation and sentences sometimes. It doesn't take much :)

For one of the most badass bands of all time you guys all seem nervous on camera.
Can't wait for the album!
When it's not your native language you get more nervous, at least I do^^

Yeah I know that tec9 abuser :p
+EnrageD that's Spanish accent :P
+Ghost It still sounds Swedish to me, but I'm an ignorant american. He probably hangs around Swedes too much, I assume he also speaks Swedish?
His English is good for a guy from Uruguay living in Sweden
Mr. Worldwide
No doubt
he Lives in Barcelona though...
This is the first time I have heard Martin Mendez talk
Talked to him in person a few times :D
Mendez is the man. He's been 18 years in Opeth and his work is flawless specially in the last records. Looking forward to listen his new basslines!

I actually think it's the other way round funnily enough :)
When people are tired they usually speak worse a foreign language than in normal condition.
How would it deteriorate? It could ONLY improve.
Dude, just by listening to the dude for the past decade his english has deteriorated. I Dont see it improving anytime soon, unless he takes up singing some lead vocals wit Mikael.
Fair enough. As long as he has his bass playing to do the speaking for him, Opeth fans will be down wit that.
Bands should give more credits and space for bass players in metal music.
There are lots of bands with great bassists, you just have to look. Beyond Creation, Obscura, Death, Atheist, Dream Theater, etc.
Job For A Cowboy's "The Sun Eater" had amazing bass playing and the bass sat remarkably forward in the mix.
MJS2001 Protest The Hero have awesome bass player. Probably one of the best. Progressive/Djent bands usally have good bass players.
+Theo Martin I have never been a big fan of djent, but maybe I will check them out.
MJS2001 They are not typical djent band. Have influence from other metal genres like progressive and metalcore.
I think daily about this cd, can't wait!
He may be the most chill dude to ever walk the earth...
Uruguay carajo! Vamo arriba Martin! Los esperamos otra vez!
They're all sounding more and more like Mikeal as the time passes
Episode 5: Steven Wilson?
nice one
I'm just in love with this band
Very understandable :)
+Daniel Tarsitana yus
I'm glad you had a good time recording and jamming. Saw you guys in South Florida culture room in 2013. Hope to hear Sorceress soon.
Opeth forever!
I love this guy.. This seems like an interview done somewhere between 2AM and 'fuck this shit' O'Clock after a long session.
Grande uruguayooo
Awesome bassist, really stands out
Such an Under-Rated bassist! listen to him carefully thoughout Blackwater Park, he's got such an amazing sound! I can't even describe it!!
good work guys getting mendez his share of spotlight which he greatly deserves. hope we see more of mendez on media and live shows as well.
Aguante Martin! Opeth sigue haciendo de las suyas!
FINALLY A BASS VIDEO OH MY GOD.

Martín Méndez
HOUSTON Oct. 13th Hell Yeah
OPETH IN DROP A? HELL YES IT SHALL BE BRUTAL! \m/
When is that shirt going to be available????!!!!
Uruguayan pride!
Woohoo, yet another video of a member of Opeth essentially saying "I'm done recording, the albums gonna be cool kbye". Riveting.
I'm sure these 3 wasted minutes eat away at you nightly.
+Jaycen Bizzle ahahah! :)
Is "Sorceress" influenced by Return to Forever ?
I don't think so. Even if both Opeth and Return to forever have a song with the same name the two pieces have little in common. RtF's is fairly funky a nd jazzy, Opeth's is kinda hard-prog. Not even the keys intro sounds quite similar to chick corea's playing

I'm going to cover the ever loving shit out of your Sorceress bass lines Sir Mendez.
love the accent ;)
Dropped to A?!? ahhhhhhh yeaaahhh
Sorceress is drop a I think
It is, it's really fun to play too
David Fuller Yeah, it is (I didn't know it had a name lol)
me too lol
And yes, it is.
October 5th hurry the fuck up so I can scream like an idiot when I hear you play!!!!
who the hell came up with the idea of talking about instruments WITHOUT showing them, playing on them? so pointless. But as for Mr Martin Mendez, he rocks big time!
Mendeeeeeeeeeeez!
Is Martin currently learning Swedish?
No he's been speaking Swedish a long time. I met him around ten years ago and we spoke Swedish then.
Nice! Thanks for answering.

so basically what they mean is that opeth is a one man band
Méndez can talk?
:3 ♡♡♡♡♡
These updates are so boring! They just plug what gear they use.
They didn't even have to do this if they didn't want to. Be grateful
No I'm pretty sure the label is making them do it this way.
It seems like everyone in the band is disappointed in the album.
