Mario Movie 2 should be Mario Galaxy inspired. Bowser should get a Zuko style redemption arc, where he realizes he isn't actually all too evil after working with Mario and the gang. They should also lean more into the emotion with a sequel, to capture that classic Pixar heartwarming feel.

That's not what pacing means. Pacing in this case is referring to the speed and fluidity of a scene. Every scene felt like it rushed to fit in another scene. Sometimes the segway were way too quick. I felt like more was supposed to happen before other sequences but no, the scenes just really come and go.

Disagree. 6 or 7/10 at best. The plot was basic, the characters are meh, and the pacing was cheeks. The animation and the IP are the only thing that carry this movie. Without those, this would be the most movie of all time. They need to do better next time, preferrably better pacing and trying something deeper for the next movie.

I liked that Peach's first reaction to Mario was cautious respect; she acknowledged that he wanted to help, if only to save his brother, but she also wanted him to prove himself. Along those lines, it was great to see her not as the damsel in distress but as a capable ruler who gets things done.

It's funny, the animation is phenomenal, has lots of Nintendo references which I understood, and I love that it's mostly accurate to the games and they didn't change too much for the story. This is my favorite videogame adaptation, simply for a fact that it's...Well, a videogame adaptation, and it doesn't try to shy away from that like some adaptations tend to do...
It has gameplay elements from the games, it has game's sound effects, and most of all - it uses game's soundtrack on it's full potential...
It's no longer a "Oh look! A Green Hill Zone theme at the end of the Sonic movie!"...It literally plays Mario 64 castle team when we see Peach's castle for the first time, it has Bowser playing the dungeon tune on his piano, it has Super Show theme song as a commercial jingle....

I give it an 8/10. The only serious issue I had was the pacing felt rushed. The movie could've benefited from an extra 10 to 20 mins. Other than that, it was a Mario movie from Illumination, of course it was gonna be simple, colorful fun, but honestly that's all we needed as well ensuring the essence of the Super Mario franchise was there which it certainly did even with the changes made for their story. I enjoyed the two Sonic films even with their many flaws and I choose Sonic any day over Mario, but I can easily say the the Super Mario Bros. Movie was much better than both of the Sonic films.
Heck, while I'm at it, I'll also own up and admit I was wrong about Pratt's Mario. Yes it's nothing spectacular, but hearing his interpretation in the span of a whole feature film was certainly tolerable and worked for the world they had in mind for movie. They depicted this Mario as at least a 3rd generation Italian American and it worked. I mean I'm 3rd gen and I don't sound like Speedy Gonzalez.
Also extra points for Illumination giving my boy Donkey Kong more love than what Nintendo has given him in the last several years. Rogen's voice wasn't the most ideal for DK, but he certainly matched the silly and brash energy they gave the character in the movie. I think he did fine and hope they make a DK spin-off movie.

I’d honestly say my only big problem with the movie was it’s pacing. Like, it felt like we moved from point A to point B away too fast at times, especially at the Mario and Peach introduction.
But other than that, still a solidly good film that I enjoyed. Peach was my absolute favorite character, which is something I never thought I’d say about anything in the Mario franchise.

I really liked the movie, I thought it was adorable. The best way for me to describe it... It was very very cute.
Very innocent, very childlike, adorable... like it SHOULD be. Mario has an innocence to it, and they maintained that.
Also it went out of its way to pay so much respect to the entire franchise while having a very simple solid plot. I was so afraid I wouldn't like Peach, now they wanted to make her strong and independent and all of that. But she was great. She was a LEADER! And it makes sense in the context of the movie, she's the ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, like she has been for decades, and she acts like it. Taking that leadership position, without every being angry nor condescending like so many other female leads these days, instead she maintains her grace, her femininity, and her curiosity, she seems honestly concerned about Mario and encourages him on his way as well as showing worry when he's hurt, she is kind and helps him. She was VERY likeable and just... Great... i would love to play a game controlling THIS Peach.
Also all the kids are going to eat this movie up..... The kids will love it and beg their parents for merch. This movie wasn't aiming itself at activists, it was aiming itself at Mario fans and families with small kids. And it is a family movie the entire family can enjoy together, like it should be.... disney.
So yeah. It was exactly what it needed to be. It was nice.

I just...wanted Charles Martinet to voice Mario and Luigi in the movie. These characters are way more than normal, they're SUPER! The characters aren't only supposed to be fun, they're supposed to SOUND fun. Chris Pratt and Charlie Day just sound normal, it's not bad, but it's just not as fun to me. Jack Black as Bowser was fun! But Peach was just...ok. That's one of my biggest problems here, the movie was already cool, but giving the movie a fun sounding voice would've made it even greater in my opinion.
When Charles Martinet's cameo came up, I both smiled and sighed because he was perfect, he even said so himself in the movie. It's just frustrating to me because the movie itself was pretty cool! But the voices never really elevated the experience for me except for Bowser's voice.
I just don't know why people always think Charles' Mario voice would've been annoying for the movie when ILLUMINATION itself has one of the most annoying sounding characters ever created.....It just so frustrating to me.

I think a sequel would likely be a damsel in distress kind of ordeal for peach as in this timeline, as seen Bowser has already developed his crush on her and he's trying to impress her by conquering kingdoms and stealing power stars. Basically, he thinks he can win her over by displaying power and dominance. Once this inevitably fails, then he resorts to just straight-up kidnapping her which could be a starting point for a sequel. And furthermore meaning we could see some iconic characters and story; like the koopalings and Yoshi whom was teased in post-credits.
If a sequel was to happen and I fully believe it will, it needs to be longer, needs to slow down as there were scenes going mach 10 at points in the movie. Overall a fun film, with the critics being too harsh and having too high of an expectation i'd say a 7/10

Maybe for the sequel, if Peach gets kidnapped, maybe they could go with something like in Paper Mario 64 and Galaxy, where she’s sneaking around helping Mario from afar, as well as in SM3DL where she straight up escapes on her own, fights baddies herself, but eventually Bowser just throws his whole army at her
And from the 3D Land games something else they can take, is let the bad guys use powerups as well so they become a bigger threat, since in this movie only the good guys were allowed to power up, which makes sense because it’s like in the first SMB game, where the likes of Fire Piranha Plants and Boomerang Bros. weren’t a thing yet

Better than placing a video game/cartoon character into the real world scenario that drives me crazy because this movie was just that a movie about Mario and other video game characters!
Would I love for some of the OG voice actors from games and TV shows to voice their characters on the big screen? OF COURSE! However, that's not the game Hollywood plays with these movies...

I love every bit of this movie it's awesome. I love all the call backs to the games. I was able to catch most of them. It was a fun mix of the classic games and the more recent ones. Browser singing that love song about Peach had me crying. That was so funny. Mario being overprotective of Luigi reminded me of Cuphead and Mugman. Only Mario isn't mischievous like Cuphead. No hate on Cuphead his mischief makes him funny.

8/10 for sure. Great movie to watch for enjoyment. But isn’t that great as a stand alone film.
An example I’m using. Imagine watching this movie and this is your FIRST experience of Mario. How would you understand the onslaught of references being thrown at you, let alone character motivations, world building, etc. the movie explains NOTHING. And characters don’t grow, they just change abruptly.

Personally I really like the movie sure it has a predictable story and isn’t the greatest movie of all time but it’s definitely the best video game adaptation & illumination movie ever plus the animation was a nice mix of realism & cartoony and the cast while at first a bit questionable did a really good job plus the movie is really funny

I think I can sum up the movie in one sentence.
It’s a Mario game in movie form.
But seriously I think that accurately describes a lot of the apparently strange choices the producers made, like how little of the world is explained and why the movie jumps from one set piece, or should I say, “level” super fast. You’re already supposed to know who Mario is, that Bowser has literally always been a peach simp and that rainbows can in fact be driven on. There’s no need to flesh out who these characters are because you know them by heart from years of experience. Nintendo and Illumination were banking on the idea that you the viewer were a mario fan, and while that really didn’t work for a lot of people, it certainly DID work for the majority of viewers. If you’ve been playing the games, you wouldn’t be surprised that peach was already pretty competent, or that the very first toad that accompanies the gang was actually implied to be Captain Toad twice in the movie. In fact, you would be ecstatic over how many references they put in the thing (basically every scene and soundbyte has at least one) The movie plays safe because it has to by design, and I LOVE the movie for doing so. That’s why the reviews have been shockingly divisive. 😅

Nah I want that lumalee Luigi movie that had to be my favorite dynamic about this movie. What I really like about this animated movie is everyone walked away with a different opinion on it and everyone took away something different. Like Seth Rogans voice took me right out of the movie and, everytime he's was on screen I felt like he dragged down what was otherwise mostly stellar voice work. While I never felt like I was out right watching my versions of Mario, Peach and, Luigi I liked the take they took with the characters voice Mario has a real New York accent not heavy or, thick but, just your average New Yorker. Luigi felt perfect to me and, choosing to remove him from most of the film felt like the right choice for me since it allows Mario to build chemistry with the other three heroes and, serves as a stellar plot device to get two people who would have no obvious reason to ever interact with each other a solid reason to go on an adventure together. I loved that they got the brotherly love between them out of the way in the beginning and, even showcased Mario's insane platforming skills once he knows the terrain (as in the early sequence when he rushes to make it to the first plumbing job) and, then when we see he's insecure he can hardly platform at all (as in the peach training montage). I agree with Doug from nostalgia critic when he said he felt the movie could have an additional few minutes added on to each scene to let it breathe more but, I felt that was more than made up for by the living world they created pushing the boundaries for what a video game movie should do when creating the world we are living in for an hour and, a half. As for the licenced songs I like their inclusion as it ties together the two seperate world's with real life music only being used when it's a scene including Mario or, Luigi who might actually have those songs running through there head and, traditional Mario music was on used when in the mushroom kingdoms and, surrounding lands. Heck they even used donkey Kong songs when in the donkey Kong country (sorry couldn't help myself with the play on words). Then we get to what we're hands down the best things in the movie which was the parts that Bowser was involved in. The opening scene with the penguins with that trite call to action song they used had me literally bursting out laughing. Bowsers prison had me in stitches. And, Bowser himself pining for Peach was hilarious. Also really loved the deep cuts to Nintendo and, specifically Mario lore and, history for me I really loved the scene when Mario was playing Kid Icarus on NES. Then you had the layout of the arena which resembled a 3-D recreation of the original donkey Kong games. Then we had Pauline being the mayor of New York. And, even the short little scene of the Yoshi' expanded the world immensely.

And despite taking the place of Princess Peach as the D.I.D. still was able to add lore through the other side characters who were captured; like the Goth Star. Why's a Star got to be so Nihilistic, but it's a great part of the movie.

Huh, abrupt Ending to the Video.
Anyway, fair and valid points and opinions, I could see where you were coming from and I could agree in some aspects,
Personally, I thought the Movie was pretty okay, pretty entertaining, I liked it and i will look forward to see what have in-store with the Next one.
However, I did feel like the pacing were a little too off in Middle-Act of the Movie, hopefully they handle that better in the Next Movie,
Still, that being said, I feel like they did pretty well with what they had, all in all as an Introductory Film I think it did its job well enough.
Anyway, what Movie would you like to see next come from this Franchise?
