- The Super mario bros movie has finally released and it's time to review it! I'll be going over all of the characters along with the references and easter eggs in the movie! I'll start with no spoilers and then jump into a spoiler talk, so that way you all who haven't seen the movie can get my thoughts... but I'm sure you all can guess I thought it was awesome

Fun fact: The entire time Bowser sang his "Peaches" song, Jack Black improvised it, the director told him he could sing whatever he wants and that's what he did.

When the two toads were guarding peaches castle, one said that ‘the princess is in another castle’ which is a cool reference to the original super Mario bros

Watched it in theaters today and someone brought their entire family tree which had 15 different kids to the movie, and it was the loudest experience i’ve ever had
I think I watched it in the same theatre as you lol
When I watched the movie, there were like, 15 kids who had a birthday party, they wouldn’t stop talking. And when the movie ended, i saw a LOT of popcorn laying on the floor!
I brought my cousin who commented on things out loud -_-
Atleast he was quiet most of the time
When I went there were like 30 children going in to the local language of the movie while I went to the English version

Something interesting that RUclipsr Maximilian Dood pointed out: even though they used licensed music, every one of them was from the 80’s, the decade Mario was born in. They didn’t just put in random licensed music, they actually put in music that came out around Mario’s era, which is pretty neat imo 👍🏻
And the licensed music makes sense when they are played, so I have no problem with them
It reminded me of the old Mario 3 cartoon, which also had licensed 80s music thrown in

@@RGC_animation except take on me, if it happened after the Mario and donkey Kong rivalry was introduced then it could’ve worked but besides that the licensed songs were not bad!
Im just happy that they managed to put the "sorry but the princess is in an other castle" line
Because of that, this film get's a 10/10
My favorite line of the movie is when Bowser us interrogating Luigi while pulling on his moustache, and he asks if a princess would fall for Mario. And Luigi screams "THEY WOULD IF THEY HAVE GOOD TASTE!!!"
That one had me dying.
i hope this movie gets an extended version/directors cut of some sort in the future
heck, if they add in even 5 minutes of new content and rerelease it in theaters, nearly everyone who saw it the first time will probably go watch it again lol

Yeah, like extending some of the scenes so it isn’t as fast-paced. They deleted most of the scene where Peach tries to get a cheep cheep off Mario’s face

I say this a lot: This was the movie of my life! I freaking loved every second! It's one of those movies you want a sequel IMEADIATLY.

What critics look for in a movie won't necessarily line up with what the general public wants. Critics look for certain features and qualities that I personally don't care about. (A lot of the critics also don't know much about the Mario franchise, so they didn't get any joy from the references like most of us did.) The Mario movie was absolutely incredible to me.
Critics when the trees in the background don’t get proper character development:

I can confirm the Bowser’s Fury theme is a direct rip! It’s sort of a remix of the first theme, but that’s just part of the Fury music’s overall progression.
If I had to pick a favourite reference not mentioned here I’d go with the hail-mary Banzai Bill launched from Bowser’s volcano. Giving it eyelids and making its “eyes” actual eyes was a such a small but significant change for me, giving Banzai Bill more characteristic charm and adding thrill to the ensuing chase by giving it reason to go full throttle after Mario.
Im so happy that Mario Odyssey (my favorite Mario game) is one of the games with the most references in the movie
Yeah probably Secret Advertising for Nintendo, the whole Movie is an Advertising for their actual Switch Mario Games lol

My favorite track was definitely "level complete" bc they implemented gusty gardens in It!! Also DK rap was FIRE
Theres a gold cart in the back when he's playing Kid Icarus, so that's one reference I noticed
If we do get a sequel to this movie which is very likely, I hope we see a lot more characters. Yoshi is pretty much confirmed already, but I also hope we see Wario, Waluigi, Daisy, Rosalina, Birdo, Bowser Jr., and the Koopalings. I would also like to see the other Kongs, since everyone other than DK and Cranky Kong were either only in cameos or not in the movie at all, the only exception being Diddy Kong who had like 1 line. So I want to see more of him, Dixie Kong, Tiny Kong, Lanky Kong, Chunky Kong, and most importantly, Funky Kong.
Oh and how could I forget everyone’s favorite Mario character, Freddy Fazbear.
I feel like the other Kongs should be saved for a Donkey Kong spin-off movie.

I absolutely loved the movie! I was busy Wednesday and on Thursday there were no tickets so I had to see it Friday. It’s definitely a top 5 movie imo. I loved bowser’s character in this movie it fit perfectly. Same with Mario he did it good

Ok First Thing I Was Really Not Expecting the Odyssey Reference with the Wedding with Peach.
One thing I do want to talk about is the trailer spoilers because there wasn’t that many things that surprised me that weren’t in the trailers
The music was gold. I can’t wait for the Mario movie 2. I know a lot of people said the story was meh, but I honestly loved it, I can agree a bit with that and yeah. I really liked the city part. The movie is very fast paced which is not the best thing to be honest. I really liked the end of the movie it was perfect. I got to give this movie a 10/10 A 9 feels too low it’s definitely not perfect but I’m basically just rounding up.
The movie was good, but there was a lot missing (spoilers):
- A soundtrack based on In the Final - Bowser’s Inside Story
- “Do the Mario”
- Mario Teaches Typing references
- Paper Mario references
Kamek's role as a yes-man and enabler for Bowser's unhealthy crush on Peach makes a lot of sense, and is actually pretty sweet if the canon of him raising Bowser still stands.
Cranky Kong's characterization is the one thing that bugs me. He isn't even cranky! Especially since DK admits he wants his dad to respect him, and not treat him like a joke... except I remember Cranky talking him down exactly once, when DK actually WAS acting like a fool for a bit too long trying to entertain the crowd. This motivation would have had a lot more weight if Cranky had been his usual petty, insult slinging self.

Well, Cranky told Donkey Kong to "stop showboating", but thats it.
Don't know if anyone's mentioned this yet but in one of the scenes in the fancy apartment at the beginning of the movie, there's a shot where you can see a pikmin-shaped lamp/decoration in the living room!
The reference that made me jump with joy was luigis GameCube intro phone alarm
Just watched this movie and I can say with confidence this review is 100 percent accurate
As much as I love Dry Bones, this movie made me love Kamek so much.
I just watched the movie and oh my god, this was incredible to watch! I don’t know what the critics were smoking, but honestly this was amazing I have to say! ^^

"What if she says no?" is the best joke in any Illumination movie

When they do a sequel I hope they make the shroobs be the main antagonist it feels like a perfect goofy fit for illumination villains especially since Mario and Luigi could do more bros attacks like they did at the end

I needed a movie to realise how messed up it was for a giant turtle to want to marry a normal human princess. What.
I like the small SMB references like the Mario’s 8-bit head being the shape of the hole when they blast though the wall underground.
I also like “ The princess is in another castle” when Mario and Toad where at Peach’s castle. I finally got to see and it was great.
Fun fact: when they go into the sewers in the beginning, there is a restaurant called chasse aux canard which is duck hunt in french
No way! He actually saw the sewers being “Leveled 1-2” I though I was the only one who saw that reference!

I WAS SO HAPPY WHEN HE SWUNG BOWSERS TAIL THE FIRST MARIO GAME I PLAYED WAS MARIO 64 AND I PLAYED IT NONSTOP I LOVED IT AND TO SEE A EASTER EGG FROM THAT GAME I WAS SO FREAKING HAPPY EHEK.

honestly, after seeing the movie, i agree with literally everything said here, especially the pacing
(spoilers i guess but)
most notably, peach just immediately knows she needs to get help from the kongs. like, geez, could've been more emphasized how powerful the kongs really are, to be honest. thankfully, the kart building (oddly) scene kinda gives you that sense of power, at least to me
overall, yeah, agreed
The DK rap was a major highlight

There was a glass pikmin statue in the rich people's house. It's not the biggest series, but it isn't the smallest either.
The nihilistic luma was a highlight to me.
i personally loved this movie, and if i was nintendo/illumination here's what i would do next. spinoff luigi's mansion movie first and then a super mario bros sequel, maybe introducing wario and waluigi or even focusing more on the galaxy games. after all, companies would make a lot of money which is always great for them 😅 and i also think fans would really like seeing the succes of the first movie going somewhere beyond
King Bob-omb was so cute finding a seat and then exploding lol. Glad they fit him into the film, along with King Boo.
Great review, I agree with basically all of it. Especially toad being underused and the movie needing a bit more time in the mushroom kingdom with Mario and peach. Those were my only major issues as well and I haven't seen them talked about much
Surprised you didn’t mention the GameCube intro theme as loogi’s ringtone that was definitely a funny one early
I kinda understand why some people didn't like Cranky Kong and he definitely surprised me but his portrayal definitely grew on me.
A lot of people hate the line of "looks like he got the wrong mushroom" but it actually implies that he rigged the boxes to have embarrassing power ups like the cat bell and mini mushrom
I wish that the pacing is better and that Mario can have better character development with other characters but other than that, pretty good.
at the end they put tiny bowser in a jar, a reference to the ending of super mario 3d world!

the scene were mario breaks though the wall in the sewers the cut out was 8-bit mario and i was the only person who saw that also when Luigi's in bowser area he shouts mario from luigis mansion
when luigi landed in the dark kingom (i forgot its name) the motif to luigi's mansion played in the song
Just water to say amazing video! I went to watch the movie Saturday and thorough enjoyed it! Me and my dad watched the “Peaches” music video in the car and couldn’t stop laughing!
I loved this movie and the storyline has so much potential from the movie for more movies and all the references were amazing!
I wish some of the many kongs got bigger roles in the movie but it is what it is, also I love the shy guys voice.
I can't wait for the Fnaf movie, too. 2023 is a GREAT movie year. Now we went from console wars to MOVIE WARS!
Mini SPOILERS:
I really liked how Donkey Kong blows out a fire flower in the Donkey Kong fighting arena scene. It was a funny reference to how crouching and blowing is one of Donkey Kong's moves in Donkey Kong Country Returns (for some reason) to obtain many collectibles and interact with the environment.

I mean I love how peach literally slaps kamek in the face and a Koopa Troopa just says trauma I laughed myself to death
When I watched the movie I kept having this though that Mario's dad and uncle looked familiar, not just to the brothers but actual characters. Then I watched the gamexplain video pointing some references and there they mentioned they look like Talon and Ingo from OoT. So you could say this is a Zelda reference which is a Mario reference itself.

Seen it, was okay. Better than most of the Oscar ESG bait that is thrown out there. It looked incredible but the story did have pacing problems. The Kongs were cool so I want a Donkey Kong Movie next!
I’m pretty sure that the gamecube theme was used as luigi’s ringtone and the athletics ddr game marathon ahd a poster in the back. Ath the end of the parkour segment you could see a restaurant designed just like the castles from the original super mario bros.

also there was actually a pikmin reference found in the house mario and luigi fixes the sink in near the beginning.
I loved the movie, but there are some things I did not like. The death of King Bob omb (😢), the face of King boo and, most importantly, the existence of the blue toad with the glasses. That could have been Toadsworth
But something I like was that in the scene of the Castle with the bonzai bill might me a reference to the stage in smash
As a diehard King Boo fan, I actually really liked his design in the movie, especially since he hit the 🤨 at one point

This perfect timing for me I just watched the movie yesterday. My theater was also chock full unfortunately it was filled mostly with young kids. Also has a lifelong Nintendo fan I knew about every single reference in the Mario Movie immediately.
Guys it's been 10 years since odyssey central s first video. Guys I believe that the mario maker videos are the best from odyssey central.

movie theaters are not the same these days. I was enjoying the film but there is that one kid not sitting down and his parent wont tell him to be quiet.
Game and watch was referenced at the beginning of the movie, a game and watch with the helmet on a truck, which obviously is a reference to manhole. Which is one of the game and watch titles.
Luigi being sidelined is OBVIOUSLY a reference to “Luigi wins by doing absolutely nothing.” Sheesh. I can’t believe you guys didn’t pick up on that. (Lol my brain is just trying to make excuses for it to work at this point.)
