Something I really liked about the movie too is that when Mario is with Luigi he is very confident and takes charge easily. But when he was separated from Luigi he was more soft spoken and shy which really helps to sell that Mario see's Luigi as more than just a brother but someone who inspires confidence in him.

Another possible reason why they made Mario and Luigi spend most of the movie separated might've been because it honestly makes more sense for Mario to want to save his brother from Bowser than it does a pretty princess who he only just met. Also, Mario did say that he and Luigi had never been apart for that long which I think makes for good character growth for both of them

This still confuses me. Even if it wasn't expected to be, what in the world did people expect? I've seen nothing but poor adaptations that are just spearheaded by people who have no idea what made the original so beloved and think they can do better, resulting in mess after mess that resembles the original in name only. This movie not only fully accepted all of its weird, goofy, fun aspects of its source material, but it looks almost exactly like what I dreamed a Mario movie would be like. There's not even a need to justify a "basic plot." It's just modern western culture that seems to be always expecting cinematic worlds that "make sense" or have some kind of sci-fi explanation when I never gave a crap about why Mario's world has floating blocks, power ups, a random road in the sky made of rainbow, etc. Evidence of this is the shift in explaining super powers in all the modern super hero movies and shows. [Fake science term] particles", meta-humans, genetically modified [animal], etc. Like, those types of explanations have existed before, but that need to make sure the audience understands "how" it works almost exactly, was not as prominent a few decades ago as it is today.
So, no, in my opinion, it doesn't even need defending in that "it's shallow but that's OK." It's not even shallow. Its narrative structure follows the classic hero plot. It has a surprising number of hidden little lore drops and makes sense out of things that weren't even clear in the games such as why Peach is good at the obstacle course. Instead of being some Mary Sue, she is a human, more capable of fighting than the toads who are not warriors, and she grew up there, having lots of opportunities to practice, and her Toads are literally family to her. It's touching. That's just one example, but you get my point.

I respect your honest, thoroughly detailed opinion.

While also being an amazing tribute to LEGO (I should know, as a hardcore fan),
with sharp and hilarious writing, and beautiful animation. You can tell that not just the animators poured their blood, sweat, and tears into it, but *EVERYONE* working on the film did.

Personally, this was a phenomenal movie for me. So many easter eggs, references, and bits of my nostalgic youth all wrapped up in one very well done movie. Yeah, that may very well have been the damn problem with the crappy original Mario live-action film from 1993 and other bad video game movies, it wasn't even remotely faithful to it's source material, unlike this sheer beauty! The characters barely looked like their counterparts and looked way too realistic! Here, they actually look like the characters with far more detailed designs, and they actually do the games good in this movie too! The Sonic Movies also pay plenty of homage to the games, including the rings, areas inspired by levels, great human characters, and characters being true to the characters in the games in terms of personality!

Absolutely loved the movie for how good it is and how there were so many references I literally couldn’t stop smiling the whole time, but my favorite part is for sure the importance they put on Mario and Luigi’s sibling relationship. Like yeah I wish Luigi got more screen time, but every time he’s not on screen is basically just Mario gushing over how much he loves his brother more than anything in the world and it’s so sweet (plus even while he’s in danger Luigi’s telling Bowser that princesses would find his brother attractive “if they have good taste” lmao). I genuinely got teary eyed when they reunited at the end and shared probably one of the most emotional hugs I’ve ever seen in a movie. Plus Luigi risking his life to save his brother at the end and then getting to share the victory in beating Bowser with Mario… idk I just love how much they made their love for each other known even when they’re separated 😊

That's what I'm saying! It baffles me how nobody else gets this. The moment that Mario saved Luigi, I finally felt myself relax. I hadn't realized that for the whole movie, I was just tensing up because I was eager for them to be ruinited again. On an intellectual level, I know that Mario and Luigi care about each other, but it's hard to feel that through a game screen when there's no real narrative or dialogue. This movie sold me on them being *brothers* for the first time, and I loved that it did. In the future I expect to see them do more together, but I think this one handled it perfectly.

I'm surprised you didn't mention that they didn't make Princess Peach a Mary Sue.
Some fans were concerned that the writers were going to make her "too powerful", but they actually had a sweet heart-to-heart moment with Mario after the training, explaining that Peach had gotten so good because of the training course, even failing as many times (if not more) as Mario did here. And she doesn't look down on Mario or do the stereotypical "men are stupid" type of personality, but instead really looks out for him and their friendly chemistry is really sweet! :)
Overall, I do wish they gave Luigi some more screentime or something to do (like him attempting to escape multiple times and failing or foil some of Bowser's plans in the background), but this was still a fun, energetic, and joyful video game movie to experience! :D

Peach did admit that she got the obstacle course right away, but then justifies that it's because she grew up in this world, which makes sense, seeing how this world is all one big obstacle course. It is great that she doesn't look down on Mario and rather encourages his determination. Also, not having Mario and Peach instantly fall in love was a good way to address the vagueness of their relationship in the games and go beyond just hero saves damsel. They start out as mentor and trainee, then teammates who work together and become good friends who talk and support one another. This is the progress of a more natural relationship... which might even lead to something romantic overtime.
And while Luigi could've used more screen time, I love that him and Mario were shown to be very close and supportive of each other as brother. It's shown that Mario and is willing to do anything to protect his little brother and Luigi, despite the odds, always has Mario's back. I love how they are in each other's thoughts even when they're separated, to when they reunite and hug and touch foreheads, it is so stickin' heartwarming, I cried. Also, their team up in the climax it's the most satisfying thing I've seen in cinema since the Endgame final battle.

She has shades of it, but also we see her mess up and fail too like another replier pointed out. I would have personally preferred if they leaned more into how she fits in Smash Bros. and the games cause that's more entertaining and would have set her apart from Mario and DK, but she wasn't that bad. Mostly cause I love thwacking people with random sports/cooking gear as Peach or hucking turnips at them. The bigger issue is they basically gave her all the traits that make Daisy unique so..how do they do Daisy now?
More importantly though, they take time out of the movie to show that she's sweet and kind too. Like you said, their friendly chemistry is really sweet and helps to make the girl boss and Mary Sue elements more palatable. Not saying the movie should have been longer (its paced pretty perfectly at its current run time), but it would be nice if they show in the future movies just WHY the toads decided this alien girl deserved to be their princess cause they don't seem like the type to see a bad ass girl and think 'oh yeah, that definitely qualifies her as princess material'.

I went into this movie expecting another Hollywood basic video game movie adaptation and I only went because my girlfriend wanted to see it. BOY WAS I WRONG. As a standalone movie it works amazingly, as the Super Mario Bros movie it is incredible. A++.

I watched this a couple of days ago for the EGA video. A great video once again!
The film was really fun, totally fine, not the average cash grab by Illumination (I had my fears while watching the opening credits).
It works like a potpourri (a medley, if you prefer) of some of the favourite tunes of the beloved Italian-American plumber, while still leaving things up for the sequels, like the Fire Flower Power-Up. No need to give it all at once.
Jack Black was hilarious and appropriately scary, the animation was really fun, and the voice acting really good!
I think that making Mario have to save Luigi was the correct choice for the first Mario outing, since it brings something personal for Mario to fight for, while giving time to cultivate a relationship with Peach to make her kidnapping more "high tension" (under the circumastances) if or when it happens. After all "save the princess you know nothing about" will not work as well as "save your beloved person" as a motive.
Although having Mario instantly loose with the Tiny Mushroom Power-Up was kind of a low hanging fruit joke, every Power-Up has its pros and with some fantasy it would make for a fun fight. But maybe that's for the next film(s)?
Anyway, keep up the great work and take care!

I LOVED that this movie is an absolute exercise in "Yes And" mentality. At no point is someone told they can't do something. It might be hard, it might be scary but no one is told no you can't, except for Bowser forcing Peach to marry him. Autonomy for the win!

Just finished watching the movie just in time to see the win score.
As a big Mario and Nintendo fan, watching and seeing all of the various game integrations kept me smiling throughout the whole movie.
Animation was fluid and well done, the acting was pretty balanced out, and it was pretty simple, but easy to understand plot.
Great movie and I liked listening to the Wins you picked out!

The clear tubes are actually from the Wii U game Super Mario 3D World. Also you can stomp piranha plants. You could punch and kick them in 64, maybe stomp too? You’ve been able to stomp them consistently since I think 3D Land on 3DS maybe earlier. Some games you can’t, but most games since then you can.

Most of all I love coming across videos you've done on movies that i didn't particularly like. Regardless of personal perspective or bias there are things in any movie, especially the ones you hate, that are still great and deserve appreciation. Thank you.

I really liked this movie a lot, I even rewatched in the theater (which I NEVER do), and my only real complaint was that I wish there was more. In particular, I think a scene with Luigi and the other prisoners attempting to escape but failing would make his jump to bravery at the end a bit more of a progression than a spike, if that makes sense.
Here’s how I would have done it: have a scene about halfway through the movie, maybe before Mario fights DK but after talking to Cranky, where the king penguin leads an escape. They can imply through dialogue that the prisoners have been planning this for a while and are ready to go, but Luigi is still scared. He does go along with it, but eventually he slips up, maybe he freezes and slows the group or gets afraid and doesn’t do a job he was tasked with to get the others out. This leads to them getting recaptured, and everyone is too disheartened to try again.
This scene would technically be pointless to the story itself, but I think it would be good for Luigi’s character as it directly contrasts his line at the start of the movie when Mario tells him he can’t be scared all the time but he insists he can. A scene where his fear stopped him from escaping would show direct consequences to that line of thinking, and give him the realization that Mario was right, and he has to be brave sometimes. Then at the end when Mario is in danger, Luigi realizes he can’t let his fear freeze him again, so he does what he has to, even if he is afraid. I dunno, that’s just my take on it

15:17 Boring? Dude how do people think that's even remotely an accurate description for this movie, it was the most fun film I've watched in years, even putting my nostalgia and Mario fan hype to the side, and the best part is you don't have to be a huge fan of the games to enjoy it! It establishes how similar this world is to the games (both outright and subtly) manages to give the characters a slightly new "feel" without just dropping what makes them the characters, and it SHOWS how threatening of a villain Bowser actually is perfectly, and that's not even to mention that it does character arcs right without outright focusing on them.
    Also Kamek is hilarious
