Tbh we don’t need a Detective Pikachu 2, but we DO need another Pokémon movie.
Very much agreed. Id be down for a "connected" universe of Pokemon movies, maybe even working their way up to Ash and/or Red movies.
I personally don’t think we need an Ash film. We have the anime/animated movies to be Ash’s story. New stories would be cool though
How about a Pokemon red and blue movie?
@@da_shadowwarrior8613 thank you I have been thinking that but no one agrees with me
A Pokemon anthology movie franchise sounds dope
I just realized that Pikachu and Charizard cowering in fear when that Gyarados evolved from Magikarp is indeed a reference to the intimidate ability.
maximaldinotrap charizard was adorable!
it actually makes me feel better about Charizard getting all scared. I mean, he is weak to Gyrados, but still!
@@XandaTV Charizard was adorable while also being shown to be scary lol.
I was expecting that coz I know most of gyarados have intimidate but it was still a pleasant surprise when I saw it 😁

I love that this movie wasn't just pure nostalgia bait, like every pokemon was just from gen 1. It was truly a love letter to all pokemon fans, regardless of where you started at.
Golurk is from Gen 5 but I see your point
@@HOLDENPOPE Torterra, Greninja, Snubull, Sneasel, Loudred... lol I think he meant that they used other gens, not just gen 1, so not entirely nostalgia bait. We even had some gen 7 with comfeys and morelluls and you can see octillerys in the food stalls.
Well I started in Gen 8, but devoted my time in lockdown to becoming a Pokémon nerd, so here we are
There was some Gen 7 appearances too
And they didn't whine about them.

I believe he may have consulted someone about this. Maybe a friend or something?
One fact doesnt make someone an expert.
Protean has failed us...

Also giving mewtwo two voice actors, male and female bc legendarilys have no gender.
jay lynne then what’s with xerneas getting a female voice actor in I think diancie and the cocoon of destruction? Also what’s with Diancie having a female voice actor as well
Well, also because mewtwo was voiced by a male in the first movie, and by a female in the genesect movie

@@Whale-Shark-Katie That's them speaking telepathically, so they're probably just choosing a tone.

Let me bring attention to the fact they started with a shot of bird pokemon flying over the town- y'know, like how the games tend to start.
and the start of the TV show seasons ;)
I didn't even think about that, and I thank you for pointing that out.
The deep cuts this film went through are not deserved
Heart-gold, for example.
They also have Blastoise vs Gengar like the begging of... I wanna say blue but maybe it was red one of the 2
Another win at 5:49: In the Gen VI games, Pokémon have a sweet spot where they like to be petted in Pokémon-Amie. Pikachu's sweet spot is the chin. Nice reference there.

I was 10 in 1998, I can't imagine how silly Pokemon must have sounded to him back then.
@@cassholevania5199 12 for me. He hit it right when he said there were things wrong but we were just so happy.
Pokemon got so big so fast I honestly can't remember which came first the Gameboy game, the card game or what. Detective Pikachu was the only game I didn't play because I assumed it would suck.
I was in Junior High when Pokemon came out. I instantly gravitated to it because of the creature designs. I'm 33 now and I'm freakin' out over the Switch game. Been a Pokemon fan for most of my life, so to see someone who wasn't big into it actually give the movie praise, makes me happy.
You can tell he did a lot of research. He picked up on subtle details and connected them to Pokémon lore.

A neat little nostalgia trip is that Jigglypuff in the bar which is a reference to the reoccurring Jigglypuff in the classic pokemon anime which used a marker as a microphone and when it got mad that everyone fell asleep when it was singing It'd puff up and then proceed to draw on everyone's faces as revenge even in the movie the mic marker has the exact same green cap
The first best thing about Detective Pikachu is that Ryan Reynolds played Pikachu without cursing every five minutes
And still manage to make us laugh.
I still feel like the original artist doesn't get enough recognition. He started doing real life pokemon oh deviantart and then contacted by game freak and nintendo to do the lead design for the movie. Absolutely amazing!
hm, i think i might've seen some of those like 7 years ago
I KNOW! I remember seeing them in facebook a few years ago and being "hey, it's not bad!"
Seeing that once I saw the designs here and they were exactly the same, I was shocked.
RJ Palmer. He's an ass though.
I know exactly who you're talking about, I faved a lot of his work :D
I KNEW THAT WAS THE SAME GUY!
I liked the movie, but I don't want a Detective Pikachu 2. What I want is another Pokemon movie with this tech.
I'm glad they didn't go for Ash's story, because realizing what past live-action anime adaptations have gone through, it would only end poorly (also I hate almost everything else about Ash). What I want to see is an adaptation of the Mystery Dungeon games (specifically Explorers of Time & Darkness, but I won't be picky).
Yehhhh the good thing about this movie wasn’t the story. In fact that story was pretty fucking terrible, but they made up for it by everything else in the movie being stunning (the visuals , the audio, the amount of research they’ve obviously done to make sure they keep the OG fans happy). I assume they’ll make more and that’ll be great. Just don’t go with another detective pikachu. They don’t need pikachu in it for it to be successful
@@lankywang9543 Not just OG fans. They cater to fans of newer games as well by including Pokemon like Pancham and Morelull.
If they make another live-action Pokemon movie, I'd like to see it based off the Mystery Dungeon games. Maybe even Black & White, since it had the best story out of all the main series games.
Mettaton Ex oh yeh of course , they did all there fans really well. I just imagined the OG fans were the ones they were most keen not to piss off. Mystery dungeon movies would be super cool

Makes me wonder how mario will go...
This movie is one of the best when it comes to world building. I've heard the argument that this movie didn't do any world building because it was done in the games/anime but the world built in the movie feels uniquely its own. World building isn't just about telling us whats in this world, it's also about convincing us that the world is lived in and that there are stories going on outside of the main story.
It is but what’s sad is that just last month the sequel’s script that was announced for this franchise’s next live action movie was cancelled😔😭and scrapped
@@MBJ829 I think it was actually confirmed again a few months ago
One underrated thing about worldbuilding is it doesn't have to be explicit (i.e. "told", or discussed by the characters). Worldbuilding can just as easily be given through background details, stage/costume design, etc. (compare reading item descriptions in the Dark Souls series)

They shouldn't do a direct sequel to Detective Pikachu. Instead, make a movie about the Mystery Dungeons series with Ryan Reynolds turning into a Pikachu again and HE freaks out about Pokemon talking. He tries to tell others that he was human before and was a famous actor but nobody believes him.
omfg that would be amazing, and it has to be something where it starts with him getting an offer about being in a new pokemon movie, opens up a pokemon game (bc research is something actors do) and then gets sucked it.

You sir get your own win
Golet and Golurk are two of my favorite Pokemon, so much so that I wish there was either a third middle evolution or even a Gigantamax form. I grew up playing Pokemon White and my first interaction with Golet immediately set it as one of my favorite Pokemon, then for it to be overshadowed by Golurk. Even their shiny alts. are so good in how different they are from their normal appearance.
Golurk is pretty boss. Liked it ever since Victini & Zekrom/Reshiram. Wouldn't mind raising one during my next Gen V playthrough.

1:44 That's Ryoma Takeuchi, who plays Tim in the Japanese dub of the movie. He's also known for playing a superhero, Kamen Rider Drive- who also happens to be a police detective. One of the cases he solves is his father's murder case.
Apparently, some people say that Dark-type (or Evil-type in Japan) being weak to Bug-type is partly because of Kamen Rider, as they are primarily bug-themed superheroes.
As an additional side note, Lucy's Japanese VA is Marie Iitoyo, who also played a superhero- she was on Kamen Rider's sister show, Super Sentai, as Kyouryu Violet.
I thought it was just because bugs see in the dark
No win for Pikachu evolving Gyrados by kicking it? An obvious reference to James kicking his Magikarp in the original Anime.
I rember that but I thought that was in the first movie
Killer Kirby it was in the cruise ship episodes where James gets tricked into buying a magicarp which everyone tries to eat (including ash and co but not misty) if I remember correctly after this James kicks it and it evolves and uses dragon rage along with other wild gyarados on everyone, this leads to the island of giant Pokémon episodes
Episode name was "Pokemon Shipwreck".
Remember he missed the craze.
he says he is not that much of a fan so there would be
some instances where he misses some symbolic moments.
He claims he isn’t knowledgeable on Pokémon, yet he pointed out that Psyduck’s Psychic move worked against Greninja, a dark type who is supposed to be immune. And in the next breath rationalizes it with Greninja’s unique special ability Protean, which turns it into the same type of the attack it’s using (which in this case is Water Shuriken) thus allowing Confusion to land.
CinemaWins, you are hustling us sir!
Also, LOVE the shoutout to cute little Bulba! #adorable
In fairnes to him, Greninja and Protean just so happen to be popular. I actually think it could have been Mewtwo knowing Miracle Eye.
He still loses a point for pronouncing protean like "protein" 😝
I think he read the TV Tropes article which pointed out Protean several times.

Just wanted to make sure you know, since you seem slightly confused, but CinemaSins does enjoy some of the movies he watches. Like, if you watched The Room (where the "oh hi Mark" meme comes from) you'll know what I mean. Its a terrible movie, but it is still enjoyable.
Jeremy does enjoy some of the movies as movies we shorter length of time and less sims, he liked them. And it’s satire.

CinemaSins isn’t satire. It’s just two guys making the same lazy-ass jokes and refusing to take criticism to improve their format.

Something you didn’t point out (and this might just be me overthinking things), but when Tim walks into Harold’s office, Giratina ( for those who haven’t played the games Giratina is the closest thing to a Devil figure Pokémon has) is missing from the set of sinnoh legendaries statues, and based on how they were arranged it would have been right where Harold is sitting. I’m not saying that was foreshadowing for some keen eyed fans, but I’m also not not saying that.
damn that is one hell of a catch!, and i do think it was on purpose considering his suit is mostly black. plus, if he knows about the first 3, chances are he knows about the 4th. not to mention all the thought and detail that went into this movie as a whole, the film makers at least did it on purpose.

Holy crap I totally missed that. That's too good to be a coincidence. Great catch!
Also why does Howard go on about Mewtwo being the strongest Pokémon when Arceus’ existence is apparently common enough knowledge for an Amnesic Harry to say his name?
Kyle Campbell
Well in the games, Arceus is considered a mythical Pokémon. So maybe everyone in this universe believes there is, was, or might be an Arceus but don’t know for sure if there is one. Kinda like the how Greek Gods were at one point. So when Harold says that Mewtwo is the most powerful Pokémon he probably had an unspoken “that we are aware of” at the end of it.

You can imagine my surprise when I saw those Torterra.
@@rebooteed_3434 come on man, this isn’t a charizard
And torterra is a starter pokemon
@@joshcameron4394 Yes it is.
No body talks about this and I feel like it's such a subtle nod to the games that could make everyone laugh. All over the movie you can see people wearing the same outfit, showing their profession. It such a nice nod to the games I don't know how people don't talk about it
THAAAAT'S a good catch.
Omg I'm gonna have took out for that on my next watch. That's so unnecessary but amazing!
I've loved Pokémon all my life and this film brought my dream of having a little Pikachu buddy that little bit closer, I'm so glad you reviewed this
After seeing this movie and this video I am praying that they use this technology to make a Pokémon Black and White movie. Seriously, that was the first Pokémon game that got me into this amazing franchise!
They need someone really charismatic for N
5:49 Also, that's Pikachu's sweet spot in Pokemon refresh.
Daisy Songbird Another fact is that Pokémon with SASSY natures like bitter food
Oh yeH
I can only imagine the amount of PokeVeterans proudly watching their old partners on the big screen. I, personally, could not be happier for how much Torterra has grown over the years.
I was really happy about the joltik cameo.
What you did there.
I saw it.
Did anyone see a Ninetales? I'm sad that I didn't get to see one.
They didn't include any of my top 5s in there, being Zoroark, Zygarde, Mimikyu, Decidueye, and Volcarona (not in that order), but I did get all sorts of giddy watching Joltiks crawl around and a Golurk guarding the police precinct.
Unfortunately I couldn't see an Infernape in all its glory, but it doesn't matter. The movie is amazing
I really loved this movie so much and I had a huge nostalgia rush back to being a kid and playing Pokemon Blue.
I think my only tiny little gripe is that at the end, Pikachu is completely in the background. I feel like we could have had a small scene where they both thank Pikachu for taking on his trainers... soul(?) for so long and letting him pilot his body despite the danger. Just a tiny gripe.
That and let Bill Nighy play a good guy sometimes pls he seems v nice.
4:56 You got that right. I even looked for those Pokémon, thinking they weren't there.
CinemaWins: I believe Arceus is like a god figure in the Pokémon universe
Every Poke fan: ITS LITERALLY GOD
Edit: Damn it's been 3 year since I posted this huh
Dude. Grammar!?!
to be fair, there's a couple gods, if you're in johto, it wouldn't be very surprising if you worshipped someone like lugia or ho-oh more than arceus.

Bolt was my favourite movie as a kid I would watch it over and over and over again and it is sad to see that almost everyone has forgotten it, I think a wins video would give it the recognition it deserves
a lot of the background effects and details of this movie impressed me when i watched it. and even more when i watched it the second time. but you really shone a light on just _how much_ of this movie is actually very impressive and i really appreciate that, thank you. i do love this movie, i think its fantastic personally. i feel like those little background details made with love and care are most of why i love. and i think the next time i watch it im going to appreciate it so much more because of you ^_^
Are my wife and I the only ones that noticed that she's in what looks like a default Valor outfit from Pokemon Go when they're infiltrating the lab? It's such a perfect little reference to what her character is like!
I was thinking that! with the exact same hairstyle that female avatars have as well
THANK YOU! Someone else noticed it!

Arceus. Not like a God figure. Literally GOD of this Universe
I do wonder, if Arceus is the GOD of the pokemon universe, then what does that make Xerneas, the Legendary pokemon of Life itself.
@@323starlight I think Xerneas it's just that, the creator of living creatures, while in the other hand, Arceus created existence itself. If i remember correctly a PokéDex entry states that Arceus was born of an egg that was floating in nothingness, and then proceeded to create Dialga and Palkia, which represent time and space respectively, so i guess in that universe all began from there, or so states it's mythology.
@@ElaynneWea I guess it's like asking which came first, the chicken or the egg. Cause how can Arceus, a living being, exist before the god of life. But I guess you can say Arceus represents existence itself as a concept.
@@323starlight Xerneas would be more like nature, life, rather then pure creation.
One of Arceus's kids.
I love the idea of human-Pokemon merging. There's a lot of implications that could be expanded upon. Like an evil team who uses this ability as easily as Mario in Odyssey. What about the stories in Canalave library that states humans and Pokemon were one in the same? Are the humans in the Pokémon world originally a piece of a Pokemon that got detached and by merging, they bring a Pokemon back to it's fullest potential? There's so many things we can go with this, and I have several ideas surrounding this phenomenon.
Also you can see the energy going though Mewtwo's body when he use his power. Love all the details in all the Pokemons
Being a MASSIVE Pokemon fan, got Masters the day it was out, and my birthday was around the time of Detective Pikachu, I decided to gather up my best friends and watch it.
It was incredible, the Pokemon acted the way I always thought they should, they fit in to environment really well, and the CGI was breathtaking, the Pokemon felt so real, and didn't look like any... meowing abominations of the universe. All my friends said it was a great time, too, and they're not even Pokemon fans!
Overall, 9.5/10, it has faults, but it's still a fantastic movie, and I could watch it over and over and never get tired of it!
If you look closely at that scene when Tim and Pikachu go backstage that squirtle cleaning the stage has a green shell. Its very hard to see, but I'm betting they snuck a suttle shiny in there
Its amazing i love this movie and nothing before has made me want to live in a different world more. I love the games and this movie was awsome
You forgot to say but I want more.
Wow that's so weird....I just got my Masters and just watched it for the first time today! I guess you could call us....Pokemon Masters?
This is a great movie honestly
It really seems like it shouldn't be.
I always liked that Mewtwo's voice was very androgynous. It was an interesting addition and makes sense, along with being otherworldly
A genderless pokemon who communicates through telepathy, yeah it really shouldn't have either a male or a female voice. Both at once is perfect.
Exactly like MechaMewtwo in Pokemon Live. That was the first thing I thought of.
Lore wise Mewtwo is talking to you with your innervoice
@@oLawlieto Innervoice?
@@Roadent1241I guess the voice you hear in your head when you think of something? Like, when you read this comment to yourself in your head, the voice you hear is the one Mewtwo uses, or at least that's what it'd sound to you.
Just hearing you talk about the fandom like that made me start tearing up, thank you. Also side note when snubble came on screen I started sobbing because he has the same face as my boxer and just cried through the whole movie because they all looked so good and so cute. It was all those feelings from the shows, games, movies and card games just all rushed back and you could tell this was made BY fans and someone who knew how to tug at our hearts.
It’s been years since I last saw this movie and it was only today that I noticed the paper lanterns at 5:23 look like Chandelure and Lanturn!
I was hopong you'd mention the foreshadowing.
After the interview scene when he goes to meet the reporter, you actually see the Ditto turn into a human to push the wheelchair. Its only for a second and its in the background. But they showed the ditto can copy humans
And right around that same moment there's a possible shiny Squirtle. The shell looked kinda green to me, instead of the normal brownish shade.
"Who cares about that THEY'RE ALL CUTE"
*Flashes Garbodor across the screen*

Bulbasaurs were always my favorite pokemon, and to see them irl.
That gave me the happy joy feeling, because irl bulbasaur is what I saw when I was picking my starter in pokemon blue.
I was worried about Ryan playing Pikachu but I love it. It had a good relationship
I'm disappointed at the lack of a mention for RJ Palmer/Arvalis one of the concept artists. Dude has been making realistic Pokemon fan art for years, and they gave him the job of doing it for an actual film. That's dope.
oh HELL YES! I've been following him on Deviantart even before this movie was a concept, I felt really happy to see his art reached all the way to the studios without him even trying.
www.deviantart.com/arvalis
This guy is crazy in the best way possible. I never thought, i would see pokémon, which looks so realistic
uh, are you implying that the guy making this videos knows about any of that?
I watched this in theaters with my best friend. I know of Pokémon, I could recognize a handful of them, but I'm not a die-hard fan. My friend however, has been obsessed with it since childhood. Watching this movie with her was a gift, because while I was impressed with how well they made the Pokémon look real, she was squealing softly next to me about her favorites being on the screen.
The best part? I knew there would be a Flameon, her second favorite Pokémon, in one scene. She didn't. The suppressed squeal she gave made my fricking day ;7;
So close... but I signed a contract....
*Flareon

As someone who didn’t know much about Pokémon outside of Smash Bros before watching this, it’s so much better to watch after playing at least one game and interacting with the fandom. I played through my first core game after seeing this (Sword), and rewatching the movie is SO satisfying with better game knowledge from the core games than Smash.
Fun Fact: When Pikachu curls up scared and says, "Pika Pika" it's not actually Ryan Reynolds. It's his ADR Voice Double. So that win actually belongs to Jon Baily (a.k.a. Epic Voice guy) 7:28
The twist was somewhat further hidden by, not to put too fine a point on it, racial misdirect. We weren't expecting Tim's father to be white.
A similar misdirect was used in Spider-man: Homecoming.
That and they put the twist in front of you the whole time, that it couldn't just be "that" simple...but it was.
It's statistically unlikely
@Mr. Al the grandma could have been his father's mother?
I realized it when I noticed they were going out of their way to show the head of Tim’s dad

I will not tolerate Garbodor slander in this house, good sir. Also, the 20 years ago thing can also apply to game lore, since it escaped from cinnabar mansion as well in the main canon. And speaking of mewtwo, can we talk about the fact that it speaks entirely through telepathy right up until it's brain gets hijacked, at which point it starts verbally speaking? And then there's my favorite obscure lore reference in the movie: the giant Torterra are a reference to one of the sinnoh myths in the canalave library in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum.
Soopakoopa64 I mean, he didn’t say it was a bad pokemon, he just said it wasnt cute xP

And the final battle, is between Cynthias ace, being mind controlled, while Mewtwo is in a tube
13:00 Man, I just love how Howard Roger is bringing the humans into the out of control Pokémon’s bodies! It’s like a new evil bad guys plot to make a world only inhabited by Pokémon and it gives me Pokémon mystery dungeon vibes! Am I the only one who thinks that Justice Smith would be a perfect live-action Miles Morales?

He could do it, I don't see why. Jurrasic World was a crap movie, but it's not like HE wrote it
That could be interesting. I never thought of that.
Nah true....but I gotta say, the charm of the Spiderverse movies is the phenomenal ground breaking animation. Personally, I don't think it needs to go live action.
I always like Grey Worm for miles morales possibly if he was younger
@@Nissim1795 I'm late but yeah. I agree that we don't need a live action spiderverse, it won't be as cool. But Miles Morales will be coming to MCU so 🤷. And with the multiverse more or less sure to come in NWH, Miles will be there ig.
5:54 Arceus isn't like a god figure, it is the god of the Pokemon universe. So pikachu is basically saying "Oh sweet mother of God that's good."
THE DETAILS GODAMMIT.
THEY ARE SO GOOD.
Really? He's only ever known as a "creator", not an all-powerful deity. But, creating a world is enough to be worshipped as a god, I guess.
@Pokemichael
Also in Howard's office there are statues of Arceus, Dialga and Palkia the holy trinity of the Sinnoh Region. From My understanding its because he sees himself as a God, or he wants to be one
I like the little detail that Pikachu’s tail is almost always visible. Even if he’s facing a direction where his body should be hiding his tail, they made his tail wag out to either the right or left, and if he shifts position a little bit, the tail will move to the other side of his body.
The only time they break this pattern is when he’s depressed after leaving Tim.
Fun fact about Ditto: they can perfectly transform, the dot eye thing is from the anime because one Ditto couldn't transform correctly. It was a fun twist in the movie either way though.
10:45 For somebody not knowing a lot about Pokémon...impressive research skills.
Well, he didn't know how to spell Torterra if he researched correctly
