Fun fact: according to Doug Lawrence's page on the Spongebob wiki, Plankton was only supposed to appear in one or two episodes, but Lawrence (whom was also a writer on the show) liked the character so much that after his first recording session, he also wrote down some ideas of his own for Plankton and took them to Stephen Hillenburg. After that, Plankton was promoted to recurring cast member.
It was also his idea to have Karen and Plankton be an inseparable duo, with Karen being the brains.
@@thecoolme1697 Dunno.
That’s why he barely appeared in season 1, and he had an entire episode called “Plankton!” That revolves entirely around him instead of an episode that has him in it.
Honestly plankton probably got better with time. His dog episode and wife Karen gave him a lot more depth and emotional attachment.
Spot is a great great addition
@@TheAlphaJayShow way better than Krabs dog who comes and goes same as snelly who Squidward gave away but shows up sometimes. Honestly the whole cast could do with different animals
But nobody tops rocky. He won a race
I also like the episode where Karen had a baby and he tries to defend his son in his teenage years... helping him to grow up and be a responsible adult
I was actually surprised Karen was so supportive of Plankton's change. I was so sure the writers would've made her the reason for everything going back to "normal".
Karen in the past, atleast in the earlier seasons never liked supporting plankton, but was kind of indifferent. While suggesting ways for Plankton to succeed (Like being a better business man instead of stealing someone else's Formula)
Plankton doesn't stop nor does Karen try to stop him. Karen always been indifferent to his plans.
Though again, it's inconsistent since there are a few times she does help Plankton. Usually just by telling him a plan that Plankton's Brain just couldn't come up with, even if he went to college
@@rickygamingproductions i wouldnt say indifferent but maybe dismissive. She wants her husband to succeed but she knows he will fail and rarely takes her advice. Nevertheless, she is fully supportive of his plans for world domination and always has been even in her debut episode.
@@TheBuckweat33 guess I was wrong then.
I think the reason why the kept plankton the same was because of how likable he was on his own. His unending attempts of trying to steal the crabby patty formula really made him a funny character and good villain. Especially his dynamic with spongebob and the gang But mostly with him and Mr. Krabs rivalry.
I'd also add (which I should've in the video), that him losing all the time is fine because he's both a villain AND usually the antagonist of the video, compared to Mrs. Puff or Squidward, who lose often and it's not always a fun watch.
This was a wonderful twist on that plotline; a brand-new way to handle the formula theft that was quite charming.
Plankton is and has always been my favorite character.
@@TheAlphaJayShow Is so right!
@@TheAlphaJayShow You probably wont respond but what plankton did in this episode, does that represent well "catfishing?"
“Not only did you play with Squidward’s heart.” That’s the _first_ thing Mr. Krabs said after Plankton was exposed.
Mr. Krabs being actually based and caring for Squidward.
I feel the same because tha t character would have been great for Squidward 😭.
My theory as to why he alone hasn’t failed is because he’s the only one of the main characters to be played by a writer, that being Mr Lawrence. Someone who, to my knowledge, has been writing and continued writing for the show since season 1
Episodes like this that show us under all the rushed deadlines and corporate interference there are still good writers. Its just a shame that they're stuck on something that's being milked dry
Absolutely!
Plankton may be evil but he also has moments of emotional vulnerability. Compare him with Krabs who is willing to shave off all his morals for money. He's an entirely one note character who acts exactly how you'd expect every time.
I actually think this episode was good. I wish they did more with Plankton's flower addiction which was a good plot twist. I also really found the "Me Free Me Free Me Freee" joke really funny lol.
Mrs. Puff should've destroyed Petunia.
Plankton became the anti-hero by comparison to the later-season evils of Mr. Krabs.
Consider: Did Plankton ever trick children (who weren't Spongebob) into spending all their money at a theme park where their lives were in danger (and then try to skip town with the money)? I mean the mind-controlling in the movie was real but it didn't target the most vulnerable, right?
After a while everyone wanted Mr Krabs' downfall and Plankton was always working toward it from minute one. It's like the old saying: "You couldn't live with your own flanderization. And where did that lead you? Back to me." -Plankton
I do enjoy that they keep coming up with new ways for plankton to be nefarious
100%
I haven’t got to see that episode yet, but it seems amazing! I’m glad that there’s at least one character in the show that can make old fans laugh. I’m hoping that season 14 will try to do something different and make the characters a little more likable and give them that special touch or something.
Season 13 has some gems
@@TheAlphaJayShow
You’re right, it does!
It really does, which some of the older fans don’t like to watch since they will automatically think they are bad. I was fine with some of the season 13 episodes. Some of them I actually thought were funny. There are some gems, like you guys said. I also like how they toned down the overly exaggerated faces. I also like how they will sometimes try to sneak an adult joke into the episode, like with Squidward, Plankton or SpongeBob. Sure, this will never compete to seasons 1, 2, 3, and 4, but it’s not terrible. The new writers are still at least trying their best.
I've noticed that too about Plankton. I attribute that to Mr. Lawrence who has written for Plankton for years now
He really fought for Plankton too
Aw heck yeah, so happy to hear our favorite college graduate is still just as iconic as ever ✌️😁
And getting better honestly
@@TheAlphaJayShow What did you study?
Excellent job for the writers to make sure that this episode is more than just a hybrid between "New Leaf" & "Imitation Krabs" as well as keeping Plankton's character relatively intact.
Although my favorite character is Squidward, you still have to agree that plankton is one of, maybe even the best spongebob character due to how entertaining he is in some episodes
I don’t like Modern Squidward. He has none of the nuances of Classic Squidward.
@@paulgilbert5278 ik. It kinda destroyed the child and adult thing that spongebob and Squidward had. Although, modern squidward does have his moments
IMO Plankton always has been one of the best written characters on the show.
Everyone was written perfectly back in the earliest seasons. Plankton managed to survive seasonal rot
@@paulgilbert5278facts. Plankton was always my favorite character in the dark age seasons of the show
@@paulgilbert5278 so true
I feel like Plankton and Squidward are the most consistently good characters in this show after all these years.
I honestly agree.
Very true.
Quite surprised to hear Karen put under unlikable.
I thought she was most improved of the main cast from old to new, and one of my favorites overall
Agreed
Fun fact:
Mr Lawrence originally auditioned for the role of SpongeBob. The writing staff thought it was absolutely hilarious but wouldn't be a good fit for SpongeBob. Because of this, they created a character specifically for Mr Lawrence with the same voice as his audition, who went on to become Sheldon J Plankton.
Ironically in his debut he got to play Spongebob..kinda
Crazy how the villain of the show is the only one that didn’t fall off.
Best spongebob villain
Most likely
@@TheAlphaJayShow hope you had a fun Easter
2:58 you can tell Squidward just watched The Mask
He’s too powerful
Shaggy vs Plankton, who wins
@@TheAlphaJayShow shaggy is the gigachad, you have a good point
@@TheAlphaJayShow if we’re being honest, plankton has a easy dub.
I know the show has evolved over the years, but I could've gone my whole life without hearing Squidward say "think of me as your _begonia pappy"_
I really liked this episode. Reminds me of something from season 3-5. I like the squidward subplot the most as I think it’s funny that he falls in love with a robot and breaks down at the end causing them to fight plankton cause he broke squidward
Season 3-5?
Doug Lawrence does such a great job as plankton's voice actor. Nobody else could come close
I do enjoy the way that they kept Plankton relatively funny throughout the series. His attempts to steal the Krabby Patty secret formula made him a really likeable villain.
5:03 oh my god its so weird watching newer episodes in my language because a lot of jokes are references that i do not understand + they are impossible to translate. In one episode while squidward was angry a spoiled piece of cheese appeared above his had and fell on him which made no sense and had no reason to happen unless you understand the reference if it even is one, it might just be there for no reason.
Plankton has always been my favorite character more than sandy, very underrated etc, finally getting some recognition
This episode is great imo. And yes, even though I think all the main characters work well rn, Plankton is by far the most consistent.
I recommend checking out the newest episodes of TPSS btw, the show is storyboard driven now, and you can clearly see more charm and better writing in these newer episodes.
TPSS?
@@TheAlphaJayShow The Patrick Star Show
I hated the show before, but the newest episodes are enjoyable (A Space Affair to Remember is an exception, that one was meh. Neptune's Ball wasn't very good either, but it was an ok episode to me).
Honestly I see the show split into 3 eras as far as character and tone
Seasons 1-3: The Golden Era
Seasons 4-8: (I don’t have a name lol)
Seasons 9-13: The Wacky Era
funny that out of all characters, they make the villain the most likable
the little green bean is the onlt one who gas had an expansion of his character rather than being trimmed down to fit in a box.
honestly he deserves his own spin off for his character surviving this long;
Petunia was hitting those onion-son "HUH?"
It's crazy how out of all the characters to change in this show, the recurring antagonist is the one who changes the least.
Haha squidwards rizz is honestly pretty good
You know even tho the quality’s dropped since I was younger, I still find myself sitting next to my younger sister and watching it from time.planktons probably the best part of the new episodes.
Plankton never fell off because of how straight foward his charecter is
The fact that all the characters besides plankton were blacked out in unlikable is just seriously sad to look at ngl
I think the Flower Pot episode would've been better the shop owner turned out to be even WORSE than Plankton. It would be awesome if Mr. Krabs begged Plankton to come back and put the flower shop out of business.
The part where Squidward fucks everything up is the funniest part
Bru that sponsorship insertion was fucking beautiful
I have a theory, what if the characters that did fall off are actually pod people. The real characters who had the personality everyone loved was replaced by other people trying to imitate them.
Well I gave hard time believing Season 1 Spongebob and Season 13 Spongebob are the same character so you might be onto something
0:52 "A tried and true *formula* with Plankton..."
4:44 "...turning into a *shell* of their former selves..."
I see what you did there, Alpha Jay 😉
I searched for a vid specifically about Plankton because how I realized in retrospect, how good he was as a character and I wanted to see if other people agreed.
" I ALWAYS COME BACK"
I genuinely liked the idea of plankton actually realizing he wanted to do something else nicer than wanting to steal the secret formula once again. Iv seen plankton in lots of times as a casual relatable guy who is not as evil as who i thought he was. That chum clan episode was an example for it. At first i thought plankton only liked those alive chum monsters just because they would help him steal the formula and take over the krusty krab. When they failed to destroy and scare krabs into giving them the formula. Plankton actually still wanted to hang out with them. Surprisingly. I thought plankton would just stop talking to them and just call them useless or another failed attempt. But plankton actually gained emotion for them and wanted to spend more time with them acknowledging the fact he actually found some friends. The chum monsters were the ones not wanting to hang out with plankton anymore which was surprising. But at the end of the episode. I really liked that about plankton. It shows he really does have a heart for some people. He actually just wants some friends and just wants to have a good time.
Some people claim that Plankton obsession with the Krabby patty formula is falling off. I disagree this obsession is people like him.
The thing is plankton was always refreshing to see, even the his thing of trying to steal the formula every day wasn’t repetitive because he always came up with a new idea or scheme that was always fresh. Plus the character himself, unlike a lot of others plankton legitimately has two sides to his character
His evil side and the good side that comes out every now and again showing that while yes he can be angry and a jerk sometimes he does have the compassion and ability to care as he can be very open to help or pitch in outside of schemes to get what he wants
Ex: the mermaid man movie he was there and wanting to help more or less by choice and never tried to steal the formula
I'm pretty sure there'd be a less complicated way to set off all those explosives in the krusty krab
7:06 sunflower :0
Plankton actually has depth these days. That's why people love him still
Nah, I think it's just cause Mr. L. is such a chad.
i think this video is super good from differentiating “good” and “liked” characters, because people LOVE squidward and gary, but because of other characters, their quality drops as theyre commonly the punching bag.
Love your video Alpha Jay show
1:42 gosh how does a fish get that thicc?
I mean... I guess she likes the crusty crab, right?
1:55 ah. Still that's a thicc fish.
2:50 and squidward is a cultured man.
Goodbye everyone I'll remember you all in therapy - Plankton
they left the season after 12 to the dust ben on Paramount +, and didn't even put season 13-16 on paramount +

Oh dear gods make it stop! I feel terrible for plankton!
Squidward is The true monster here…
The TLDR version seems to be "Flanderization kills characters."
At first I was skeptical, but now that I think of it, I never recall watching an episode with Plankton in it and thinking “That feels out of character”, unlike literally every other main character
“I will now present to you a slideshow on why everyone else has fallen off, meanwhile I have remained on top”
-Jackmanifold (A RUclipsr I don’t watch but have still heard that quote from a random clip)
i like how they still kinda stay to the aquatic theme with the bee beeing (pun intended) a jellyfish
Bro that ad was so smooth and good! Wasn’t to long but got the The point across and ended as smooth as it started! I may go and buy one just because of how good that was😂
What’s funny is the only time anyone can say Plankton “Fell Off” was in Served but even then what wasn’t even his fault. The writers just DESPERATELY wanted to torture him for whatever reason.
I mean even when I didn't like Plankton at first he had always made me laugh with his over the top voice.
Deathloop was just a little undercooked, but Redfall seems like an overall disaster.
I thought he left for hood but then I remember what happened at dulls ville
the reason plankton never got bad was because his character was already simple to begin with, simple as
you cant fuck up something thats so simple to begin with
All those times where plankton tries to steal the secret formula makes me think back to FOP. You know When it comes to stealing there is something that Crocker wants to steal from Timmy's Fairies, And I was thinking that he only wants them for their magic wands and by stealing a wand he can prove to a girl as crazy as him that fairy god parents exist.
Now we have Chloe, and she has to be perfect for a reason. But what reason would there be for a girl as perfect as her for needing fairies? They haven't explained that reason to anyone or maybe the reason is so simple for Chloe that she wouldn't need Timmy's Fairies just to steal a magic wand of her own from Fairy World.
2:48 squidwards arm changed color for a split second
While we're on the subject of this episode, the way Plankton's robot kept ending its sentences with "Huh" honestly got really annoying.
Plankton never successfully steals the formula but he really does steal the show in many appearances
One character that desperetly need a change of pace is Squidward, he's still my favourite character and he has amazing potential but no he's just the cephalopod the universe hates for some reason sometimes I wish he would show some backbone and really kick SpongeBob and Patrick off his back, like REALLY go for it because sometimes they are so insufferable.
I just watched one of the very recent SpongeBob episodes “Frendiversary”, and man, I think it’s worth a video, cause… for what episode is about, what a waste of a concept
That episode is excellent...
Why does Petunia talk like Onionsan from Undertale?
Plankton should get his own spin-off show instead of Patrick
Poor squidward
Interesting essay😊
(I don’t know why I didn’t click on this video sooner 🤦♀️) but I have noticed that Plankton hasn’t changed since, which could make him be your favorite character for later seasons. For some reason Plankton hasn’t had a sudden change of tone in newer episodes, and I don’t get why but hey! at least someone stayed OP. I think I’d actually want to see this episode tbh
My theory is that the villains of bad things are often awesome for a couple of reasons. There is, of course, the fact that they oppose the values of the work, so naturally viewers will latch on to them. But it is for that same reason that the writers and actors often have a truckload of fun with them.
Wow, I have resolutely not bothered to watch a single "new" episode of Spongebob since the...I think the 5th or 6th Season, not much further than that anyway (the only episodes I can recall from the Post-Movie era that I've watched are the one with the Kelp Shake, that one with the pet named Puffy Fluffy, the one with the Moth Supervillain, and...I think that's all actually, whichever Seasons those were in was probably when I stopped watching completely), and had no plans to watch, let alone purchase, any of those episodes...but just with what little was shown here of this _Flower Plot_ episode, I will make it the exception when I get the chance.
I find the "Huh" from "Petunia" quite endearing, and the fact that it's actually Plankton quite funny.
Try pickin' up a window. See how that works.
The masterplan
IMO Plankton, Gary, Bubble Bass and Larry the Lobster are the only notable characters to have never fallen off at any point in the show.
Kid Danger: *wearing his big trucker pup outfit and gets surprised* screw you, Panda! Gary t. snail is NOT boring! *snorts mad and growls annoyingly*
This gave me Second Hand Shame
@@greensonickid3304 Kid Danger: *wearing his big trucker pup outfit* i'm i'm sorry, are you agreeing with me or disagreeing with me? i i don't understand. I have autism and I don't understand. *has a confused look on his face*
If you think about it, Plankton's life is perfect. He has a wife, a son, two dogs and a job that pays for his inventions.
Plankton is still just Plankton, and I’m here for that.
SpongeBob grew to a spineless idiot
Patrick became a terrible idiot for a friend
Mr Krabs became more greedy and unlikeable
Sandy was still Sandy most of the time
And Squidward just grew more irritated by SpongeBobs foolishness
You know in the 1st SpongeBob movie plankton finally stole the formula but that didn’t mean he got away meaning that he won
Plankton is the only character that has actually gotten better over the years
I like the newer and the older episode I do not care to SpongeBob is still SpongeBob
Honestly, we need more Plankton centered episodes like this, unlike the Plankton Marriage Conflict Episodes which are average, or in the case of Plankton Gets The Boot and Lockdown Of Love, terrible.
Yeah he's still an awesome character!
I honestly thought we would get more progression on the female characters. They made changes in the worst way. More developed relationships with oulf have been great. Imagine squiddie m, patrick, spongebob, gary... etc getting a new friend or romantic partner. Seeing Pearl navaigate school and relationships more. Im tired of seeing the boys interested in the same woman all though that flower shop lady and squiddie would have been interesting if she was a real character. His love of the art and her love of flowers would have been a cute dynamic
I like the bee pattern jellyfish
*Can we get a Regular Show episode? It’s been 11 MONTHS.*
As I get older I'm starting to get more annoyed with status quo ruining character development, I personally can't stand the Plankton episodes due to it and this would be part of it because of his character always meaning to fail. Some growth should be allowed, maybe have Plankton have the flower business as a side hustle to keep him funded so he can focus on stealing the Krabby Patty Formula instead of just having infinite money for no reason.
Also Plankton's a villain so you can't really piss the audience off by making him more unlikeable.
