Could you have set the bottom of the cord to the down cable first and then loosened screw on the rest where the cord goes through the rest? Then, when you drew the bow it would have pulled the cord to the proper length, as it passed through the rest. After that tighten the screw that holds the cord tight in the rest. Would that method also have worked?

Yes it will work and probably a better method as it saves more of your cord.
