Great clip to start from. For a bit of context, Fr Ted was made in the 90's about 3 Catholic priests on a remote Island off the west coast of Ireland. The reason they're there is because they are totally useless priests. The show was written by Irish writers and mostly starred Irish actors but was made in England due to the isish state broadcaster refusing to make it due to its very controversial theme of making fun of priests. The Irish Catholic church tried to have it banned and denounced it as pervasive resulting that when it was shown in Ireland it was shown at 12 in the morning on a Monday night. The are an entire generation of Irish adults now who remember making all sorts of excuses or sneeking down stairs to watch Fr Ted on low volume soas not to get caught watching it. The thing was it was just so funny it's now considered a classic comedy up there with Fawlty Towers. There is even a Fr Ted festival out on the Aran islands on the west coast of Ireland where the filmed the opening credits (imagine an island where everyone is dressed as a priest or nun, the pubs dont close and there no police, that's Tedfest).
Oh come on, Irish people where not sneaking downstairs at Midnight to watch it. Ireland was not that bad. The show was available to most Irish people on C4 anyway and it was hugely popular in Ireland and not controversial at all.

I have zero business weighing in on the state of anything in Ireland's past or present for that matter. I was lucky enough to meet a beutiful woman born and raised in Ireland called Shalina, who moved here for work after obtaining her degree in Luxembourg. For some reason as she was way out of my league, I was lucky enough to date her for around 18months. It was so awesome to have someone with first hand knowledge on Ireland as well as worldly events to learn from. ..lol..As you can imagine finding articulate intellectuals in Greeneville,TN is not exactly easy. Her stories always made Irish folks seem so noble and strong enough to adapt quickly to any situation.(a trait that she never had to highlight as it was just obvious 99% of the time)That's a big reason I was so interested to see great comedy coming from there during what I understand were extremely tough times. I can't wait to find a way to stream every episode. Also I would greatly appreciate any suggestions on any movie or series created in Ireland that is worth watching. Especially the ones that haven't gotten their proper due in the US.

The Irish and the British argue a lot over who owns Fr Ted. Essentially, it was written by Irish writers, and stars Irish actors, but it was given it's start on a British TV station - due to being too risky to air on Ireland at the time I guess. So really It is Irish, but it's watched on both Islands, and without the UK it may never have come to air. I'm happy to split it 60/40 :P
There was no risk in making this on Irish TV it was just never pitched to them and got made by a British company and therefore could reach a larger audience in the UK. It was also shown on Irish TV and was HUGELY popular and people in Ireland loved it and found it hilarious.

Hope you feel better man. Work on getting better at a skill, that's what helped me get out of depression. I got really good at film and photography and it gave me confidence and self-esteem I never had before. Also pay very very close attention to what you eat, stay away from processed foods and sugar, they have a huge effect on your mental state 💪
The milkman episode is not only the best one of the whole series, but I think it's the most perfect comedy episode ever written. And you have to watch it to the the very end, after the credits, for it to come full circle and be perfectly complete. I lived in Ireland for a summer and rented a room in an Irish couple's house; they put me onto Father Ted because it was still on in reruns at the time. I loved it.
Show really hit in irish culture in the 90s, the church the piety and hypocrisy of it, the sexual repression and the nosy mad neighbours. It helped us laugh at ourselves it was revolutionary.
@Cam Dempsey I've heard that a lot of Catholics (including priests) loved it, and when it was released, there was a slight increase in new applicants for the priesthood, which had long been in decline. The comedy is more about human foibles than an attack on Catholicism
Father Ted was brilliant but not the first to parody the Catholic Church. An earlier British/Irish comedy called Me Mammy starring Milo O'Shea did this, It started in 1968 and ended in 1971. Unfortunately no episodes have survived. There is also Dave Allen who was a master at this.
I do hope you guys watched the full episode. It just goes downhill from there, and the Hitler mustache scene takes it right over the cliff! It's got to be some of the ballsiest comedy of our age.

Graham Linehan, the creator presented it to RTE, an Irish television channel channel but they rejected it, as Ireland was just coming out of the grips of catholic subjugation, and didn't think Ireland was ready to watch tv that was taking the piss out of the Catholic Church haha. So channel 4 picked it up, so yeah it was funded and produced by a UK TV channel, but created, written, acted and filmed by/in Ireland.
Best sitcom ever. The episode where Father Ted leads a group of priests out of the ladies underwear section of a department store 'The Great Escape' style to avoid a scandal in the community is pure genius.
Have to laugh at the baked look the guy on the left always has. Can't believe you dug into Father Ted, which is great, but you didn't even see the funniest parts of this episode. And of course Father Ted is deep into Irish Catholic stereotypes, which makes it funny as hell. Keep going with this series you'll find gold there.

This was the best show on TV at the time in my opinion. I looked forward to it each Friday night it was on. I'd definitely recommend watching the whole 3 series of the show.

The bit at the very end, added by RUclips (after the sketch), is a running gag where the priests' housekeeper, Mrs Doyle, always INSISTS that every visitor accepts a cup of her tea, like it or not. Here, the gag goes to extremes, where she keeps saying "Go on, go on, g'wan, g'wan, gwan-gwan-gwan-gwan..."
British and Irish humour are pretty much the same. Whatever some Irish people like to say, we are pretty much the same. Same culture, behave the same way, same language. It also helps that we are located right next to each other.

It’s three Catholic priests (Ted, Dougal and Jack) living together on a tiny Irish island called Craggy Island… part of the humour here is it spread so quickly because it’s such a tiny and close knit population where everyone knows everyone else’s business, and also it’s way too tiny to have a hitherto unknown ‘Chinatown’ area… 😂 It’s a work of comedy genius. The actor playing Father Ted, Dermot Morgan, died of a heart attack, aged 45 in 1998, shortly after filming had been completed on the third series.

Graham Linehan, the creator presented it to RTE, an Irish television channel channel but they rejected it, as Ireland was just coming out of the grips of catholic subjugation, and didn't think Ireland was ready to watch tv that was taking the piss out of the Catholic Church haha. So channel 4 picked it up, so yeah it was funded and produced by a UK TV channel, but created, written, acted and filmed by/in Ireland.

The episode where Father Ted leads a group of priests out of the ladies underwear section of a department store 'The Great Escape' style to avoid a scandal in the community is pure genius.
Have to laugh at the baked look the guy on the left always has. Can't believe you dug into Father Ted, which is great, but you didn't even see the funniest parts of this episode. And of course Father Ted is deep into Irish Catholic stereotypes, which makes it funny as hell. Keep going with this series you'll find gold there.
The end of this episode with Ted at the window is one of the funniest things I've seen.

I love that the guy asks Father Ted if they’re all supposed to be racist now, “what’s the church’s position?” and then points out that the farm takes up most of his time and at night he just likes to relax with a hot cup of tea so he wouldn’t be able to be racist full time. 😂. This was the best show on TV at the time in my opinion. I looked forward to it each Friday night it was on. I'd definitely recommend watching the whole 3 series of the show.

The bit at the very end, added by RUclips (after the sketch), is a running gag where the priests' housekeeper, Mrs Doyle, always INSISTS that every visitor accepts a cup of her tea, like it or not. Here, the gag goes to extremes, where she keeps saying "Go on, go on, g'wan, g'wan, gwan-gwan-gwan-gwan..."

Father Ted may be a British production but it was written by Irish writers and reflects Irish humour as much as British.
British and Irish humour are pretty much the same. Whatever some Irish people like to say, we are pretty much the same. Same culture, behave the same way, same language. It also helps that we are located right next to each other.

UK tv sit coms don't use laughter tracks, we play the whole show live to a studio audience. Laughter tracks is a very US thing. Love everything you watch, you got good taste.
