This was one of the finest written comedies ever in this side of the pond. It parodies EVERBODY… the clip you showed there is so multi layered when you actually look at it , the accidental racism , the full blown hidden racism and the guy willing to be led by the church in terms of racism, blended together it’s so witty and so well done and actually leaves you asking questions of yourself in terms of casual or latent racism. It was of it’s time (mid 90’s) but still stacks up well today . Another clip to look out for is the priests trying to escape from the lingerie section of a department store, absolutely classic.

It was essentially an anti racism clip from a comedy show ...the point was supposed to be that many "ordinary people" could upset people with things that they didn't consider to be racist....after impersonating the chinaman he spent the rest of the show proving he wasn't racist and telling others not to be racist....but Father ted is very funny.

(Which is why having one is funny.) If you've never seen 90's British sitcoms, there are a ton! Father Ted (Dermot Morgan) died unfortunately in real life and was a really funny guy on screen. I did hear when I first watched it decades ago that even proper Catholic priests watched it, as it was stunningly close to being an actual Catholic priest; I still don't know how close to the truth that is or still is but I still find it adds to the show. This is great as all Father Ted is, but it doesn't even make the top 3 for me. Favourites are a joint top between "Cigarettes, Alcohol & Rollerblading" and "Kicking Bishop Brennan Up The Arse".

The episode gets even better. A clue to what happens next is the back square of dirt on the window pane that the Chinese family looked through!.......

Father Ted is one of those comedies that would still be going if not for the untimely death of lead actor Dermot Morgan

The script for the show was wriien by two Irish lads Graham Linehan and Arthur Mathews. They brought it to Ireland's national tv network who turned it down because it would be too controversial. They brought it to British channel 4 who took a chance on it. The rest as they say is history. It won every accolade that can be won for comedy . The cast and all the outdoor footage was filmed in the West of Ireland and depicts the lives of three dysfunctional priests living with their widowed housekeeper. The star of the show Fr Ted ( Dermot Morgan) passed away in 1998 after the last episode. Sadly most of the cast has since passed away but it still airs on several channels now. Well worth watching.

There is a WONDERFUL sketch you might enjoy from the BBC's 'Goon Show' of the 1950s. A radio show featuring the writing talents of comedy legend Spike Milligan, It's called 'What Time Is It, Eccles?'. One of the finest pieces of comedy ever written. His comedy award acceptance speech from the 1994 British Comedy Awards is also well worth watching! Both are on RUclips.

You have to view the whole episode. Father Ted tries to make things better & digs himself into a deeper hole! I love the line about people living in the Chinese quarter. There’s only about 50 people on the whole island!
A brilliant, evergreen comedy. In some episodes, the characters are based on real people.
