I know people like short clips, but for any Americans watching, my advice is to watch this in full episodes. Father Ted is one of the greatest comedies ever made. It has real heart to it as well and you will end up in love with the small cast. Do yourself a favour - Go on, go on go on.
Who would have thought that a sitcom about catholic priests on a tiny island would have been such a hit?. This show hit the ground running. Even the much loved Only Fools & Horses took about three seasons to get in gear but Ted just exploded and kept on going. Every episode is just wonderful, its difficult to find fault with it. The writing is just brilliant and its a heady mix of satire, parody and farce with a slightly surreal flavour (one running gag is that whenever Dougal looks out of the window its always some odd footage or giant insects etc) and bizarre characters all crammed onto an island. I cannot recommend this show highly enough, its an absolute gem of a sitcom. I would go so far as to say its impact in the late 90's was not unlike the Pythons arrival in 1969.
Dermot Morgan had a history of parodying Irish life and he was very good at depicting a slightly more farcical version of the characters that were around him. The raw material was there and he knew how to mould it. He got himself into hot water with conservative Catholicism with his predecessor to Father Ted, "Father Brian Trendy", a loose parody of a priest that was popular in the media at around that time called Fr Brian Cleary. My understanding is thet Fr Ted was made in the UK because the natonal broadcaster in Ireland wouldn't make the series due to worries about what might happen when the church got pissed off. Thankfully the Catholic church no longer has that kind of power in Ireland now and in its own strange way Fr Ted played a part in the emergence from church influence that began in the late 1970s. It wasn't just great comedy it had a part in societal change.
@@mikekelly5869 They never offered it to RTE. That’s just a myth. Also, the church’s power had waned so much by the 90s that something as mild as Father Ted was aired as soon as it was released by RtE anyway.
"I hear you a Racist now Father. How did you get interested in that type of thing?" Priceless. Would really like to see you react to full episodes, they're only about 25 mins long. Love your videos, enjoy your channel. Thanks for posting them 😃
There's a scene in the same episode where he's standing at the window looking out and shouting. There's a black square on the window that makes Ted look like a certain well known Austrian gentleman from WW2 😂
Ah now, Ted is a work of genius. Its a sort of Anglo_irish thing that works on two levels, if you're non-Irish, its super hilarious, if you're Irish, its super super super hilarious. It encapsulates many facets of Irish life and attitudes in a sort of magnified, but entirely understandable way. It is magnificent in every possible way.
I'm English but I was brought up in Roman Catholicism and Father Ted is my favourite sitcom by some distance. Check out the episode "Tentacles of Doom", it's a great dig at Catholicism as well as being hilarious.
Actually it’s worth watching that whole episode it’s brilliant. There is the lingerie department one where the priests are stranded in a lingerie department and ted saves them. And there is a brilliant episode when ted and Dougal enter a song for Europe, they have stolen a tune from a previous entry , but thinking they will get exposed resort to using their original tune
Many years ago, I was in a pub in Richmond. I was availing myself of the facilities and in the gents was a chap I recognised and I started talking to him. This is of course very funny, but you also need to see the whole episode to best understand the humour and how Ted, with the best of intentions digs himself deeper and deeper into a hole of "racism" not of his choosing. Also, there's quite a cut between Ted leaving the living room and coming out of the front door in this clip, which explains how the news has spread about his "racism". Also, look at the window - there's a "perfectly square piece of dirt" on it - this also comes into play with hilarious unintended consequences later on in the episode.
Hi Amanda, there was the Father Ted episode where Dougal deputises for a randy milkman and every house he visits the women open the door stark naked. Dougal just delivers the milk without butting an eyelid, whilst the women are mortified to be seen naked by a priest. Then right at the end of the episode, the penny drops and Dougal announced "They were all nude, Ted." Brilliant.
That is also the one where they do a pastiche of Speed, where the milkfloat has a bomb on it and they have to stay at some ridiculously slow speed otherwise it will blow up.
For me 2 of the best scenes in Father Ted are the One where him and Dougal are trying to write a song for the eurovision contest and the other is when Father Ted has to kick Bishop Brennan up the Arse, where the bishop is being introduced to the pope and he suddenly yells out "He did kick me up the Arse!!"

It may have been produced in Britain but the comedy is pure Irish.
The Father Ted creator also did the fantastic series Black Books.
The whole of his series is just brilliant. Watch them all if you can . Shame he died before making more.
One of the ultimate classic comedies, anything to do with Father Jack is worth a recommend straight away
Father Ted accepting the golden cleric award is very funny
"It isn't the Greeks... It's the Chinese he's after..." Perhaps one of the funniest ever lines.
You need to watch yes minister and yes prime minister. Old programme but still relevant today! Brilliant British comedy!
So many to choose from .The milkman or Eurovision or beauty contest or plane crash
You need to give Phoenix Nights by Peter Kay a watch. It's set in a Northern working men's club in Lancashire. It was aired in the early 2000's and has a cult following. I think you will enjoy it.
I hope you are going to do more Father Ted clips. I'm really happy you enjoyed it and glad I (and others) recommend it to you. I love watching your reactions. Remember, it's good to laugh 😂x
For sure! 😊
The bit in the window where he has a tache is the best part of this episode.
You have to watch the "some mothers do have em" roller skates scene
You must see the one with the milk man Pat mustard another classic lol
There are so many hysterical Father Ted episodes - the one that always instantly comes to mind is when they get stranded in the women's lingerie department of a store or anything which includes Mrs Doyle.
Ah go on...go on...
Father Ted is comedy gold.
The Father Ted, Small, Far away sketch is an all time classic.
An analogy which has lasted me a lifetime
My favourite episode is the one when the three bishops visit Craggy Island - what happens to them all and the ending is hilarious
Mrs Doyle to Father Jack: "And what would you say to a cup father?"
Father Jack: "FECK OFF CUP!!!!"
The craggy island football match is just brilliant.
As mentioned, every episode is gold. Really, reacting to ANY RUclips clip is worth while.
I'm going to do that myself right now 🤠
Some old British sit-coms are worth checking out: Rising Damp, The Likely Lads, Love Thy Neighbour, The Good Life.
One foot in the grave - Series 2, Episode 5 - Love And Death.
Hopefully you'll find the sketch. It's with two Romanian women saying there's 'midgy' in the bathroom.
👍🏻👍🏻
Genius in the making...my favourite is Mrs Doyles tea maker present...the look on Pauline McGlynns face as she walks away is priceless
He died way too soon, such a legend.
