Pretty sure I saw an interview with David Jason once when he explained that it was actually a 1 shot scene. They only had the one chandelier. It was the finale scene for the second series. They were warned that if they, knowing what was going to happen, laughed they'd blow the whole episode and with it the series. Not much pressure then

Hi Amanda, Happy New Year! I agree that it is always better to watch full episodes, although the two clips you have reviewed so far are classics! With Only Fools and Horses, the Christmas Specials would be a good place to start. The Jolly Boys' Outing, from 1989, was always my favourite. Maybe a tad dated now, but still a classic episode!
Your face at the end of the clip! Made me laugh more than normal, I guess I’ve seen that clip so many times, it’s not the same laugh as when I first saw it. My three favourite grandad moments are 1) this chandelier clip, 2) the Wendy house clip, and 3) a poignant rather than funny one, his speech about heroes fit for homes, rather than homes fit for heroes. It will take another post to do it justice, but there are several clips of Trigger you must see.
Amanda, really good to see your reaction to what is traditional British/Irish humour. Try and find some Father Ted, probably the best comedy ever. Try and catch one of Father Ted welcoming some Chinese tourists. In fact any episode of Father Ted is brilliant. All the best for the New Year.
You should definitely watch it in full. There's so much more to OFAH than its (brilliant) set pieces. John Sullivan, the creator/writer had such a brilliant grasp of what made his characters tick and over the years you really get to know them well, laugh at their funny moments, but grieve with them during sad moments - and there are many. His handling of balancing humour and pathos was nothing short of masterful. What Sullivan and OFAH always did so brilliantly was follow up an incredibly dark or sad moment with a laugh that almost acted as a pressure valve - it does go to some very dark places and while it does always follow them up with a laugh, it never treats the darker moments as comedic themselves. Over the years you've got things like death, drug abuse, homelessness, divorce, organised crime, a rape accusation, miscarriage, elder abuse, poverty, domestic abuse - and they're all handled so incredibly sensitively, never making fun of the subject matter. Watching the entire run, from 1981 really does get you in a brilliant mindset for, what was at the time, the grand finale in 1996. While the three Christmas specials that followed in 2001, 02 and 03 were not as bad as many people will tell you, if it had ended on 29th December 1996 as originally intended, it would have been regarded as one of the finest final episodes of TV comedy ever. If you do decide to do a full watch (they're all on Britbox) then tread carefully before venturing beyond "Time On Our Hands". It is of its time, so, like many things from the 80s, you might occasionally come across attitudes, behaviour and language that's not really acceptable anymore, but if you can look past those, you get, in Del and his brother Rodney, what I think is one of the finest TV relationships.
Over Christmas on the "Gold" Channel I think, they played just about every episode back to back ! Its so popular they do it regularly especially on bank holidays so worth keeping an eye open. There are many fantastic episodes but one of my personal favs is " The jolly boys outing" ! Not the ideal one for you to start with as all the characters are well established and you need to know who they are really. I spose the best way is from the start. Don't be put off in the first 2 series or so, it takes a few episodes to really find its feet but well worth persevering ! In the words of the great Delboy " You know it makes sense", lol, enjoy !!!!!
I always crack up when Del says “now brace yourself Rodney, brace yourself” Like even if grandad undid the correct nut…they would catch that chandelier! 🤣
Hiya Amanda. Only fools and horses is one of the greatest comedies ever. This a episode called the jolly boys outing. You'll like that one. It will have you laughing your head off.

The scene where Del has his first child and is waiting outside in the ward, the baby is born and in his excitement Del runs out to tell Rodney its been born and Rodney asks 'What is it? meaning a boy or a girl, Del's response is priceless
Ah yes, perhaps the most memorable mess up of all from the 'dynamic duo' made more funny by the presence of dear old granddad. In an interview David Jason (Del) said they'd been told it had to be a single take due to the cost and would be fired if they were unable to keep a straight face - which he said he just about managed but with extreme difficulty! It was just pure shock value the first time I saw it as I totally wasn't expecting that to happen even though something usually does go wrong. Any road it is pure comedy gold. Happy New Year!
hi amanda happy new year , i have just watched this for the hundreth time + and i''m still crying with laughter so unreal . you do really need to watch the whole episode , a giggle in the first 5 mins then a build up to crying of laughter what has just been seen. and then you should watch every episode just to cry more haha...
Even after all these years I still burst out laughing! I was once acosted by a woman in Sheffield a few years back doing a survey on bittled water, She asked me how many I could name, I began with the usual Perier, Buxton and such the likes, then I said " Peckhan Spring Water ". OOH she said " I have not heard of that brand " and wrote it down. I had a smile on my face as we parted company!
I've taken down a couple of hundred chandeliers in London and every time without fail the client always uses a quote from this episode. I just let them know grandads not here so I'll have to drop it myself, most people take it well 😂 Would love to see your reaction to green day crowd singing bohemian rhapsody live at hyde park, no Brit can hear a queen song and not sing along, Happy new year!
Brilliant scene.... glad to see you back ❤️...they could only do it in one take because of the price of the chandelier and the director told them they must not laugh....off camera the director and other people around were killing themselves laughing 🤣🤣🤣
@@LADYRAEUK the director actually said he would fire them if they laughed because they only had one fake chandelier and couldn't afford another so they had one take to get this right. Classic scene. Happy New Year
@@LADYRAEUK Little bit of insight to the clip - that chandelier that crashed to the floor actually cost the BBC £6,000 in 1982 when this was made and it had to be shot in one take. That is around £25,000 in 2022 value. The producer ordered the two actors David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst not to laugh when it falls, otherwise he would fire them from the show. When it crashed to the floor, Nicholas saw the producer Ray Butt, sticking a handkerchief into his mouth to try and stop himself from burst out laughing during this one and only take.
Happy New year Amanda, can I recommend another only Fools and horses clip.its the when Del and Rodney go to a fancy dress party as batman and Robin, well worth a watch
This scene was actually based on a true story the writer John Sullivan's father told him one time. When he said to him that he was gonna use it in the show his father didnt think it was a good idea and how could he make humour out of such a bad thing. After the show finished that night John apparently got a phone call from his father who had watched the episode that night saying "Son you're right, it is funny"
In another episode : "Trig's" street sweeping brush he claims is 'totally original' - "It's only had 14 new heads and 5 handles !". Also worth listening out for is the Cockney Rhyming Slang for example, "J. Edgar" for vacuum cleaner (J. Edgar Hoover). It was used amongst WW2 London traders to make sure the locals got the best of everything when goods were in short supply.
This is a true story, the cast was told that they only had one chance to do this take. If they messed up the whole series under threat. Amazing to think that this was not only one of the most iconic moments in British Comedy history but also nearly the end of OFAH, due to the BBC pulling the funding. Thank god they got it right the first time! Love your reactions Amanda, perhaps you could check out some scenes with Trigger in them, such as the one where Rodney asks why he calls Rodney Dave from the council meeting.
For a couple of years, London buses were fitted with a TV screen on the top deck for the passengers to watch. I'm not sure what the idea was other than to make money for the third party that paid for them. This clip was shown (no audio) with subtitles. As a passenger on the number 23 bus to Liverpool street it was always good to to see it come on near Oxford street because you just knew that in a few moments all the tourists (well some of them), would erupt into laughter.
Fools and Horses is stunning on so many levels. It is not an out and out comedy. But has some truly memorable, laugh out loud, parts (try the Christmas Batman and Robin special). But John Sullivan's scripts afre second to none. It is all about the family and their interactions. It is so much more than a comedy. I guarantee you will cry at times. Fabulous.
Ah yes Amanda, you must see some full episodes. I recommend 'Stage Fright' and 'The Unlucky Winner is' but pretty much any of them will have some funny moments in them. Happy New Year and lets say 100K Followers by years end.
I nearly fell off my chair when a saw that for the first time. I miss proper comedy shows. Although, at the moment PMQs and BoJo the clown is quite entertaining. Great reaction 🏴👍
Absolute comedy gold - there are far too many full episode recommendations to list. But some from me would be: Yuppy Love, Danger UXD and Stage Fright. In all of my years I have NEVER watched an Only Fools and Horses episode that ended with me thinking, 'that wasn't funny'.
You need to get the box set and enjoy full episodes, so many gags in each one, doing it one gag at a time, you still be here getting new one's in 20 years time.
The whole scene was done in one shot. They only had one replica chandelier and the director told David and Nicholas that if they laughed or even smirked before he said "CUT!", he'd make sure they never worked in TV again. You can imagine how much willpower that took to keep a straight face. First class British comedy, the likes of which we will sadly never see again.
Definitely a legendary only fools and horses moment, I hope you do more clips about this comedy. I hope your American viewers will give this comedy a chance. That scene actually happened in real life you should watch the documentary of only fools and horses.
Your reaction was priceless! I have seen that so many times and I still burst out laughing... "now brace yourself Rodney" Happy New Year to you and yours and everyone that watches this channel!
You really do need to see the whole series. To put into some perspective as to how popular this show was during the 80's and 90's, the TV audience for the episode that aired on 29 December 1996 was over 24 million. The population of the UK at the time was about 60 million. I'll let you work out the maths.

I must have seen that clip dozens of times and it’s still just as hilarious now as it was then. Classic British humour
Love the "hey grandad, you want a jemmy?" "No, had one befoe we left". So subtle. Great writing.
One of the best Only Fools & Horses to watch is Triggers Broom....just brilliant!
👍🏻👍🏻
I've taken down a couple of hundred chandeliers in London and every time without fail the client always uses a quote from this episode. I just let them know grandads not here so I'll have to drop it myself, most people take it well 😂 Would love to see your reaction to green day crowd singing bohemian rhapsody live at hyde park, no Brit can hear a queen song and not sing along, Happy new year!
It's even funnier when you find out that wasn't actually meant to happen
Lol really
@@LADYRAEUK yeah, apparently they were meant to catch it and the ladders falls
@@LADYRAEUKNot true.
this was actually based on a true story, some relative of one of writers .
Brilliant scene.... glad to see you back ❤️...they could only do it in one take because of the price of the chandelier and the director told them they must not laugh....off camera the director and other people around were killing themselves laughing 🤣🤣🤣
Hahahah I bet they were 🤣
@@LADYRAEUK the director actually said he would fire them if they laughed because they only had one fake chandelier and couldn't afford another so they had one take to get this right. Classic scene. Happy New Year
The one with a job lot of Florescent paint is a favourite of mine. Happy New Year! Great reaction again.
one of the greatest comedy series ever made. I definitely urge you to watch them all
👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks! Happy new year 🎉
This scene was actually based on a true story the writer John Sullivan's father told him one time. When he said to him that he was gonna use it in the show his father didnt think it was a good idea and how could he make humour out of such a bad thing. After the show finished that night John apparently got a phone call from his father who had watched the episode that night saying "Son you're right, it is funny"
It's a classic. Love only fools and horses. Seen the show in west End London. Absolute blinder it is.
"Wish you'd have told me! I was working on this one!" 😂 classic Grandad! Classic Only Fools! The best British comedy ever.
I've lost count of how many times I have seen that snippet, but it makes me laugh everytime, despite knowing what's coming.
👍🏻😊
Yes you need to watch them all. In my opinion the best program that has ever been on tv.
Hi Amanda, Happy New Year.
Loving these classic comedy reactions - keep them coming!
You needed to watch it to the end of the sketch when Grandad comes back downstairs... Comedy gold.
The soundtrack double cd is probably one of the best ever.
Haha I bet, that’s brilliant 😊
That would be amazing! 👍🏻👍🏻
The Unlucky Winner Is... is absolutely hilarious!! 🤣🤣🤣
Amanda, your face was wonderful when the (wrong) chandelier hit the deck. Thanks so much for sharing that with us.
You need to watch all of it, it's a classic of British telly, it only gets better the more of it you watch, not a single bad episode.
Genius! I remember that episode now...... Highly recommend you watch full episodes of Only Fools & Horses, a little dated but classic comedy
I nearly fell off my chair when a saw that for the first time. I miss proper comedy shows. Although, at the moment PMQs and BoJo the clown is quite entertaining. Great reaction 🏴👍
I love watching your reactions to comedy classics .You realy enjoy them.
Thank you 😊
Happy New Year, great reaction video to kick 2022 off.
Thank you! Happy new year 🎉
Happy new year Amanda. Absolute legend status that episode. Your reaction was totally true to everyone who has ever watched it.
🤣 thank you!
Happy new year 🎉
Absolute comedy gold - there are far too many full episode recommendations to list. But some from me would be: Yuppy Love, Danger UXD and Stage Fright. In all of my years I have NEVER watched an Only Fools and Horses episode that ended with me thinking, 'that wasn't funny'.
I’ll have to watch some full episodes 😊👍🏻
Danger UXD is brilliant
Wish they'd show grandad coming down the stairs looking all proud of himself 😂😂
Also when they all just scarper off to their van and do a runner
You need to get the box set and enjoy full episodes, so many gags in each one, doing it one gag at a time, you still be here getting new one's in 20 years time.
😊👍🏻
Del falling through the bar is the best comedy moment of all time
haah !
I'd highly recommend getting into the series of Only Fools and Horses, it's full of great moments, it's awesome
Also Red Dwarf is a great British comedy
Yep, I laughed so much, the tears ran down me legs.😀
Lol 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Happy New Year Amanda , have a lovely 2022 and here's to you getting 100k subscribers 👍😍
Aww you watched short version. It keeps getting funnier after that when Grandad comes down the stairs so proud
I nearly died when that episode was aired!! 😅🤣😂
I watched the clip after you posted your bar fall reaction, but watching you crack up made it all the funnier. Happy new year.
Haha I’m glad! Happy new year to you 🎉
When they paint the take away is another good one.
Definitely a legendary only fools and horses moment, I hope you do more clips about this comedy. I hope your American viewers will give this comedy a chance. That scene actually happened in real life you should watch the documentary of only fools and horses.
amanda its a iconic series..you will never stop laughing
Your reaction was priceless!
I have seen that so many times and I still burst out laughing... "now brace yourself Rodney"
Happy New Year to you and yours and everyone that watches this channel!
Thank you! Happy new year to you and yours 🎉
One of the best moments in my TV childhood there lady.. Hope you had a good one
You really do need to see the whole series. To put into some perspective as to how popular this show was during the 80's and 90's, the TV audience for the episode that aired on 29 December 1996 was over 24 million. The population of the UK at the time was about 60 million. I'll let you work out the maths.
Amanda, I know you will probably end up watching nearly or all or these episodes, they are absolutely hilarious. You will keep watching over and over, they still make me laugh. The Comedy sketches are timeless. 😆😆😆
One of the best comedy misdirections ever. Happy New Year!
🤣brilliant!
Thank you, happy new year to you and yours 🎉
You should watch the whole series start to finish ."Miami twice" they go to USA it's gold ,you'll love it .
