Asthmatic as well. I used to sing in a choir, and we were taught to breathe "in the butt". Sounds ridiculous, but it works.
My problem, however, has never been breathing in, but as anyone asthmatic knows, breathing out might get tricky at times.

This is something I definitely heard from my doctor, and I like this. There is only one issue I tend to find with breathing exercises however. When I'm having something of an anxiety attack, in many ways breathing does help. For me personally, however, I find that when I focus on breathing I can start to feel more anxious. The only way I can currently describe it is the feeling of inner claustrophobia, the feeling if inner restraint. There my anxiety is asking for more air, the controlled aspect feels restricting. I know this is intended to slow things down, but sometimes it doesn't want to.

    • @wancheng89
      @wancheng89 4 года назад

I know that feeling. When I feel my breath is restricted, I’ll remind myself to breathe as my body needs, and just observe my breath without trying to control it. Usually paying attention or being mindful alone helps to slow down the breath without feeling forced.

My breathing is so shallow and my upper back is so tight that when I do try to take a breath, everything is so tight that I need to do some serious relaxation in order to get some big breaths in. And yes, my neck and shoulders hurt too. I'm so tightly wound up, and it's painful on every level. I'm going to try doing this at every red light when driving too, and will continue working on this. I've always hated breathing exercises because it enraged me. I've never really understood why until I started meditating. I started to notice I slowed my breathing, and when I started noticing my breathing I would get anxious and it would mess me up. After realizing the problem, it took A LOT of leg work to get over that. I focused on how my body moved when I breathed, rather than how I was actually breathing. Idk if that'll help other people, but it's worked for me so far. I still have problems, and breathing exercises still make me really, really mad. BUT!! I've gotten a lot better and I'm proud of myself for that :) breathing really does help you. It helps.

Hi Kati :) thank you as always for your tips!
As a Voice teacher, I find myself frequently trying to correct the idea that breathing should be “abdominal only”. Not that you’re suggesting this, but since everyone talks about belly breathing some of my students (and my self included, when I was younger) concentrate on pushing the belly outwards and not moving anything else. This way they block correct breathing from happening, because they lock the last ribs and don’t think of respiration as a 360 degrees mechanism. I like to put one hand on the belly and one hand on the side (with the thumb feeling my back) to make sure that everything’s relaxed and expands. One helpful tip would be to bend over (head and neck relaxed) and see what happens. Normally (unless you’re really really stressed out) the breath will automatically shift toward a 360degrees mechanism that involves belly/sides and back. One other idea could be to massage your chest/solar plexus area and back while breathing to relax the muscles that block the lower ribs.
Another one could be to breath through a straw (even better if plastic free ;)).
Of course there are plenty of exercises, I have dozens more, and each one of us is different, so no worries if you cannot find the right one for you: just keep trying new ones!
I myself don’t really like the cyclic breathing exercise that you suggested, just because I’ve been anxious about my breathing since I started taking singing lessons (and even more when I started having allergic asthma), and this exercise makes me tense if I’m not in a very relaxed state of mind.
A couple of things that work with me for relaxation only (not for learning correct breathing especially):
-Fire breathing (it has other names I think): comes from yoga, you breath through your nose very fast, but instead of concentrating on the intake of breath, you concentrate on pushing out the air with a movement that comes from your belly button; when you’ve pushed, relax the belly and the air will come back in without you thinking about it. Start slower and make it faster and faster (but don’t do it for too long or your head might turn).
-close one of your nostrils to breath in and then exchange them so that you breath out through the other one
-Or you could think of breathing through BOTH nostrils
-close your eyes and look upwards when breathing in, then slowly descend when breathing out
Hope some of these can help someone as much as they help me :)

I don’t feel relax if I need to think about how I need to breathe. If I need to count, I can’t relax, even if I need to stop breathing, I really stress out.
I just try meditating (without the breathing part) and that helps me. Yes

Thanks Kati! Helpful as always! The mindful breathing really helps my concentration and spacial awareness. [EDIT: autocorrect decided that the word spacial was pretty special!😄]

More trees = more oxygen = better "belly breathing!"
Here's a simple meditation method I use for "belly breathing" without ever having to touch my stomach to "be sure I'm doing it right."
First, understand that all you need to do is locate the diaphragm muscle consciously, and tell it to "pull down." Or just "pull." Because that's what it has to do for you to breathe in. Pull Down = inhale, Push Up = exhale. It's a Pull/Push muscle. That simple. Just like all other Pull/Push muscles.
So, to locate it, sit in a chair, feet flat on the floor, hands on knees, back straight. (Or your favorite meditative posture)
Now, willfully focus your attention to the area of your body just below your rib cage, and try to use a muscle there to "pull down." Your body already knows how to Pull/Push, you just have to focus your willful intention-awareness to that area of your body and "tell" any muscle in that area to "pull down," and only the diaphragm can obey that muscle-command in that area of your body.
(Don't call me crazy until you try it!)
In this meditation you're not "breathing in." You're causing a specific muscle to "pull down," and the effect of using that muscle that way is breathing in. You should be able to feel the diaphragm muscle moving while you control it. If you're familiar with mindful-awareness you should quickly be able to use this muscle only, while keeping your shoulders perfectly still. In the best diaphragmatic breathing only your chest/rib cage moves outwards. Your shoulders do not rise, and your belly DOES NOT MOVE or bulge out. With some practice you will see that this is true.
    Namaste

May you please do a video on adult autism and what one might expect getting a diagnosis as an adult. I’m getting tested next month and I’m 26 and this is all really new to me and most of the information out there is for children, and I guess it just kinda confuses me a bit.
Thanks! And please keep being awesome in your videos. :)

Is it possible breathing just doesn't work for me as a coping mechanism? Watching relaxing things, or distracting myself from panic attacks and such have helped me more than breathing exercises ever have.
Or have my therapists been recommending the wrong way to breath? Ive had two so far, and they both told be to take big breaths through my *chest*, not my stomach.

@@gentlebutch yea ive tried everything. Breathing during meditation, using those breathing guide apps so you take long enough breaths, it just doesnt work for me. Or if its working, its at the same pace as simply waiting it out :/

Well not everyone is going to find a lot of benefit from breathing exercises.. but you should be belly breathing, not chest breathing when trying to calm down. Give this a try and see if that helps :) Otherwise, just stick to the coping skills that help you most. xoxo

@@Katimorton I'll give it a try, but also thank you for the validation! Ive had family members tell me im just not trying hard enough for it to work and people dont seem to believe it couldnt NOT work.

yep diaphragmatic breathing helps a ton, esp those with anxiety. Cant tell you how many times while working as a respiratory therapist in a hospital where someone with asthma and anxiety was thinking they were having an asthma attack when they were just having an anxiety attack (tho the two can cause bad spiraling) and they were chest beathing. just having them sit and focus on diaphragmatic breathing brought them out of their situation.
