Personally I really like the overture of The Human Comedy. It prepares the audience for the show while keeping short and sweet. Some other effective ones in my mind right now are Kiss of the Spider Woman (if that's an overture? Or a musicalized scene?), Seussical (really short), and oh-so-beautiful Light in the Piazza... I was a bit surprised you didn't mention Candide.
I'm not familiar with The Human Comedy. I gotta check that out! I almost mentioned Candide (one of my favorites!), but ultimately left it out on the grounds that Candide is more a light operetta.
I was hoping that when you brought up the 80's, you would mention the overtures to "Les Miserables"(Since it's technically called that, despite being short, and only combines the melody to "Look Down" and a condensed version (from 5/4 to 4/4) of the motif for the Baricades (ruclips.net/video/Og3fE51_KnU/видео.html)) and "Merrily We Roll Along"(which is for me, despite me being more into the experimental musical theatre, is THE definite overture for a broadway musical(Which is Ironic, when you consider the rest of the show being anything but another Broadway musical). Also, I was hoping you bring up the overtures that only use one song from the show, like the Overture for 1776 (ruclips.net/video/P_wdhQ6a470/видео.html) P.S. When do you intend to do a Flipping of the Flops for "Merrily", or have you already done that? Also, have you, by any chance heard of Sting's "The Last Ship"? I really suggest you try it out(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Ship_(musical), and here's the soudtrack: ruclips.net/video/jBZNeb9cW2Y/видео.html) and do a Flipping of the Flops video on that too! Thank you! :)
That's more of a really good opening song rather than an overture. More Sweeney Todd is still definitely in the works! I'm currently figuring out the best way to proceed with the series (without repeating myself or being too boring); in the meantime I'm stalling by making videos such as this one.
Personally, overtures are very boring to me. It's hearing less meaningful versions of songs you just about to listen to. You don't to convince me to watch your show, I'm already in the theatre!
Oh, I totally hear you on that. I can't stand most overtures either because it musically doesn't add anything (for the most part) and sometimes they drag on and on. It's like a mixtape, but worse. However, it is probably one of the only times during the whole performance that the audience acknowledges the (usually) unseen musicians who are heroically toiling away at the music.
Merrily we roll along is my favourite overture

Great video! Can't believe how few views it has
The Producers has an overture, which fits since it takes place in the 60's.
So, could we consider Alexander Hamilton an Overture-like number? It sounds to me.
Also, when do you continue on Sweeney Todd?? :3

You were never boring :)
Is theater with the covered orchestra pit Bayreuth?
What about the Overture of Jesus Christ Superstar? That's probably one of the most intense overtures I've ever heard
