In this channel, I take a very close look at musicals and theatre songs and share what makes it compositionally well-written!
I would like to upload one video a month, though that is unlikely given my hectic schedule.

We have been gifted with one final glorious work from legendary Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim. I've been putting an increasing amount of energy and time into making these videos. Please consider becoming a patron on my ...

I've been a big Wicked fan for years, and never knew about the "follow the yellow brick road" connection 😮 thanks for revealing it!
Love your harmonic analysis of the music. I love it when I see videos made by people who clearly know their music theory. 😊
Thanks for watching!
God this is excellent. Took so many notes. Thank you again!!
Thanks, glad you found it helpful! Please share this video with others as it would really help the channel!
What a perfect video. good humor too. Love you buddy thanks for the excellent work and education x
Thanks for watching! Please subscribe and share, it really helps me out! 🙂
Simply the best 🇦🇺💕
April fool or not (and based on your previous ALW video I question this) this is unworthy of you.
Poor form
Wonderful analysis! Loved the inclusion of Jessica Vosk’s (my favorite Elphaba) performance for the intro of the final analysis😌
Lol hey David this is amazing work!
Lol, thanks, did the algorithm recommend me?
Yes 😝
Fantastic musical analysis! Reminds me of some of my favourite videos from Sideways or HowardHo! Can’t wait to dig through some more of your videos ❤
11:21 not her best work… why are these specific clips chosen 🥲
8:56 yikes… I don’t like her vocals here… 9:30 seriously… not again…
good video, I felt like I learned more about music with it, which has always been an interest of mine, Steven Schwartz kind of a genius. I'd love to see a video on Let It Go from Frozen, it feels so similar to Defying Gravity, funny enough both is sung by Idina Menzel, and I'm pretty sure Frozen and Elsa's characterization is inspired by Wicked
I liked the video.. I appreciate for making this video and giving musical storytelling respect.. ❤❤ from Northeast India.. 😊
I hate the modern set design they put on this when they could have easily flipped it completely the other way with a simple but ancient set
I am so grateful for this video!!! Absolutely singularly magnificent!!!
Amazing! Thanks for sheeding some light onto the brilliant work of Stephen Schwartz and walking laypeople like me through it. I appreciate the song a lot more now!
Broadway debut!
amazing analysis!
Great video!
That last clip (if you didnt already mention it) also includes a callback to "-and my Lucy lies in ashes" which is fitting, since... well, he just killed his wife.
im loving this series, can't wait to hear literally anyone comment about "ill all blow over" (please do) and the dramatic downwards key change in what would you do. and omg this musical has so many albums, have you heard the original London cast? the one in the white background, chaotic singing and a trans flag (maybe accidentally) in the poster? it has literally the best version of "what would you do", i cant hear it without crying
Thanks for this one. :) My favourite Broadway score of the last 20 years!
Thanks for watching!
Love this and can't wait for the next video! I spy two of my fave versions on RUclips, Jane Horrocks and the Texas University songs as well!
We recently had a Cabaret production here in Brazil which used the 1987 book, the one closest to the original Broadway production. That meant no “Mein Herr” neither “Maybe This Time”. Some people were OUTRAGED that these songs were cut "because they're the only ones that really exposed Sally's arc" and that they should cut "the old couple songs because they did nothing to the story". To those people I really wanted to scream "you're not a fan of Cabaret the Broadway musical. You're a fan of the movie, or at least a Liza Minelli fanboy". The movie is amazing, but I honestly think it ignores so so so much of the original pathos of the story in favor of glamourizing Sally's life (not that its not one of the main points of the story, but we have so much more depth into the story when we have Fraulein Schneider, Herr Schultz and Fraulein Kozt in the game other than a young couple with money who might be able to escape the horrors about to come…)
I think the Fraulein Schneider and Herr Shultz relationship and how that plays against the time is the true point of the musical.(Kind of the way the song "You've Got to be Carefully Taught" in South Pacific is the point there.)
loved this video; I do disagree with you branding Maybe this time as a cabaret song. In the current revival I view it as a book scene. It’s Sally singing her feelings in her head in the moment, not in the club but a soliloquy which is why cliff is frozen and she’s frozen in time pondering this moment, hense why when it’s over we go straight into the continuing the scene
I think you do absolutely have a point! It is debateable and I could be convinced otherwise. Or perhaps the beauty of this song is that any specific production can interpret this song either way!
Brilliant commentary as always. I love this series!
Ach, I wish this series would go on forever. This is hands down my favorite musical in the world.
It's a 5 part series! So 3 more videos are on their way. Thanks for Watching!
@ how exciting!
Years later, would still love to see Company ;D
I would love to at some point!
Pacific Overtures is so much into my strike-zone of interests is crazy. It's like Sondheim on the 70's thought "Damn, this might not be the most commercial thing in the world but when this one brazilian guy listen in the late 2010's he will have his mind blown"
This series was incredible
To me many of the chords, the style and even the orchestration sound 1 to 1 to "Move On" from "Sunday In The Park With George"
I see you are focusing on the music, which is good as it deserves the attention. But are you going to say anything about casting? I saw the movie, which unfortunately dropped the Herr Schultz- Fraulein Schneider sub- plot and heard the original cast album. But I saw a revival with Verner Klemperer (COL Klink) as the Jewish green grocer. While I love the charm of Jack Guilford, the original, the shift from someone who stands out to someone as German as everyone else was stunning, and made the antisemitism far more insidious and evil.
I agree with everything here, except saying Hamlet has incest as a motif? Not unless you're a certain cocaine-gargling pseudopsychologist or someone who idolises him. Like, yes, it's a thing that Claudius does that is brought up specifically, but that's one relationship.
How fitting that the time I start to get obsessed with Cabaret is the time Cabaret videos start popping up! :D To answer the question at the start, my favorite version of Cabaret is the 2021/2024 versions, directed by Rebecca Frecknall, with the Sam Mendez version in close second!
Stunning. Wow.
Bravo!!
This is so fascinating!
Glad you're back!
Well done!
I know that's a weird choice, but this is hands down my favorite song in the musical.
My second favorite after Kiss Me.
Absolutely adore cabaret, and LOVED your insights! Cant wait for the rest!
Saw Cara delevivivivngnee in cabaret at the kit kat club just a few months ago. such great timing for you to release this series. keen for the rest cheers!!!!!!!!!
