You also do not want to hang on the fence! I have watched them run a bunch of times at Whittier Narrows, it's genuinely shocking to think what would happen if the line broke .
If the track is still there, then with a resurface you already have a good base for all the electronic measuring devices you can install these days for spread , time etc.
Funny thing is the top speed is only at like 217mph unofficially now. Held by Nick Tucci who runs the AMRCA, a group that has been in continuous operation since the golden age of tether car racing!
Makes sense, since the rules are likely who can build the most efficient gasoline engine by weight, and gasoline has a limit of power output and motor efficiency. Otherwise they would place magnets in the track.
Much earth movement in the park it seems, do you remember where it was in relation to anything? PS. Just found an odd circular patch in the grass just west of the River Len, would that be it?

I'm an American. I can't believe I've never seen this: you could be had one in the space for two tennis courts, or inside a baseball diamond. Tethered Baja race truck tracks? 😁
And just to be entirely clear, it has never been called "cable racing", they are "tether cars" since the mid-40's. Note also the sound is completely unrelated, sounds like a Triumph Bonneville!
I often think about that, then remember how far things like medicine and dentistry have progressed in that short time and say "nah, I'll stay here for now ... thanks"
There are no wheel bearings, it's really simple technique. And there is no lateral force on the wheels because the cable takes all centrifugal forces. I still have my father's 5 cc car he raced with around 1970.
Low development. Aerodynamics would help a lot, off set cambers, smaller wheels on the inside, and a tiny jet-engine..... .... ::starts rummaging in the garage::
Am I the only one blown away by the quality of this 16mm film transfer? Surely it has to have been remastered.
What makes this perfect is the older chap’s woolly pompom hat.
its a great way to loose weight! how much does a human foot weigh?

That camera work at the end is insane
I went there today to see it, Track is still intact, Would be great to resurface it and run cars on it again
Is it at Mote Park?

Only 217 you act like that’s slow
No they have been over 400kph which is 250mph
@@SimRacing360 the world record is 215.9mph
Quel beau film de l'époque et très net un trésor à garder précieusement
Merci
It's been a while since I've been to Mote Park, but the last time I was there, the remnants of that track was still there.

@@hackdaniels7253 I checked out the location on Google earth and could only see a dark circle in the grass.
I found it on the map its just west of the miniature railway in the northern part of the park
So that caught on

The broom arrestor system is alive and well in 2024 in this niche hobby😅.
That hat
we had an 12v electric version that ran indoors. Used modified Scaletrix / Slot cars.
That's really old video The record for cable racing is somewhere near 200 mph
I thought I saw a video yesterday it was somewhere at 240 Mph
You having a laugh?
are there tether motor boats=? with a pool full of water?
yup, its called tether hydroplane
I did a search on RUclips for “Tether motorboats”. Lo and behold, tether hydroplane appeared, just as the other commenter said. Go figure.
I reckon they should remove the netting then break the tether after 5 laps. Whatever car ends up the furthest from the centre wins 😂
How long do the wheel bearings and tyres last for on one of these things?

I surprised these engines are that old, too bad they didn't advanced much :/
There have been countless advancements. These go upwards of 250mph.
