Anybody here who caught that this was actually filmed last year Chinese New Years 2020? Here’s our entire CNY playlist: ruclips.net/p/PL_NB5OfOute6wiGLUiqVE1ogDi757weK3
I'm a domestic helper and i love adapting some traditions and one is giving red pocket during CNY especially to those hard worker elders outside....they said must be crispy and new notes to put inside the envelop but as domestic helper who have not time to go bank and change the small amount that i want to share is complicated...so i tried my best to pick the new as i can but a little bit crample as long as it comes to my heart❤🙂...
Thank you Virginia. This was very helpful information. I was thinking of doing lucky envelopes this year. I just wanted to know the real and traditional way of lucky money.
Here's wishing that the new year will bring joy, love, peace, and happiness to you. Wishing you a Happy Chinese New Year 2021, from our family to yours!
Interesting! Our fam has always abided by the are you married rule so me being single and in my forties means I was not allowed to give red packets but would put cash into others packets so I could still give. Now youa re telling me cause I'm an Uncle I has the right to give the packets =) Yay me
Is this the biggest (monetary wise) holiday in Chinese culture? At first, I was blown away by the price point, but I suppose in western culture it could be similar to Christmas. $500-$1,500 is about average to spend in total on gifts for family, friends and coworkers during the winter holiday season. Would this be comparable, or are there other holiday that surpass this?
I'm white american and become close to chinese family that owns a sushi restaurant that we frequent often. Is it appropriate to give the family lucky money?
What dollar amounts would be considered nice for the different people you encounter that you’re not so close to but that you see every day? Like children, security guards, cleaning ladies?
Hi Katharine, I intentionally didn’t put in denominations because I didn’t want to put a price on it but I can tell you the values I do as the average commoner; however, if you or your partner are partners at a firm, or senior management, c suite, etc. I would recommend trending up because “face” does come into play. Also if you live in a moderately upscale estate, you might considering trending up as well. I think the value is based on what people do within your community. If you are close to a local lady or security guard, you could maybe as conversation ask them what the common rate is for 🧧? I do $20 HKD to random pop up security guards and cleaning ladies that are clearly in it for the money. If we like a particular security guard, we do either $50 x 2or $100 x 2 bc it’s coming from myself and my roommate. You could consider 2 envelopes of $200 or one $500, depending how many regular guards you have and how much you like them? Hopefully that somewhat answers the question =) my dad’s side of the family, my grandma is the traffic controller and gives general guideline to how much is given but some more generous uncles will give above that and the kids always love that 🙃
That’s up to you. If you’re in your 30/40’s you might want to give it to your nieces and nephews bc you’re an elder but you technically don’t have to but it’s nice anyways =)
Is it OK for me to give red envelope to my children's Mandarin teacher? We really like her! I did last year, also some tea, for end-of-year gift. I don't want to be stupid American misunderstanding and appropriating another culture!
Hi Heather, From my perspective, that’s totally okay! However you may also want to check school policy? My friend is a school teacher and they do not allow them to receive lucky envelopes 🧧 but if she’s a freelance tutor, then by all means! It’s totally cool to give lucky envelopes to your children’s teachers, drivers, helpers, etc. Hope that helps =)
I love you beautiful!! Love you're beautiful site for your Coulter! I love everything about you !! and your culture!!:) Wish I could be closer with you and be with you!!! Forever!!!!! my love !! I Love you beautiful forever till the end of time!!!!!!!!!! Forever and ever!!!!!!!
Hi Doreen, Great question, it’s sort of up to you but I think people don’t mind you overdoing vs under doing traditions. If you are newly divorced, then it might be awkward to have to bring it up bc the kids that come over won’t know. Also based on my own experience, now that I think about it, my uncle who was divorced actually continued giving it to the kids (nieces and nephews) and my older single cousins also gave it to us kids. The thing is instead of giving out 2 envelopes for you and husband, you can just give one - on behalf of yourself. So in conclusion, I would continue giving it to the family as as it’s an elder to junior situation. But say your social situations say single girlfriends etc., then maybe then it’s up to you if you want to continue. In terms of cleaning ladies, people at the valet and at social clubs (American Club, etc.), single or married people give to the staff regardless so it wouldn’t matter. I think or hope that answered your question and all the different scenarios!
"Closest to my heart" Love it

What about an uncle that’s single and not married? Asking for a friend of course.

I guess I’ll put it towards their college find... er... I mean, I’ll tell my friend to put it towards their college fund... yeah...
I did that while I was in Cambodia.

What do you do if you're broke, stay home? I'd hope if you're married you'd have better financial stability, but in the case of not.

What if someone is divorced? Do you still give out red envelopes?
