Garbage take. They can find a trivia from 1972 but couldn't find Pan's past races where he had broken 47 seconds twice. He didn't just come out of nowhere. Another trivia that these guys forgot to add, Chalmers' time was also only good enough for third place in...Beijing 2008. Pan did his best, Chalmers lagged by his own standards and shouldn't be surprised. Stop being a sore loser and credit Pan for an incredible race for the ages.

You are being selective. His world championship final times from 2022 to 2024 were 47.79, 47.43 and 47.53. Budapest in 2022 he swam his semi in 47.65. He was a mid-47 swimmer, and was 4th, 4th and 1st, when the best freestylers were absent due to it being an Olympic year. His 46.80 was in a relay in February 2024. No matter how you slice it, he improved a second in 2024 when compared with his head to head competition. All this posturing about his technique would be persuasive if he had applied significant changes from when he was a mid-47 swimmer. Did he? Ok. He was born on 4 August 2004. And turned 20 this year. There would be natural development from 18 to 20. But he is a month younger than David Popovici, and he set his world record when 17 years of age.

Pan's previous WR was February 2024 in a relay leg. Prior to that in head to head competition he consistently produced mid-47 or slower. His 45.92 (2024) is not recognised, for the reasons I gave.
Popovici was 17 when he set his peak time. So the notion that a sprint freestyler continues to improve throughout their teenage years did not apply in his case. The question remains. How did Pan cut his times by a second in 2024.

He was producing better results than that timing, but he didn’t want to let the cat out of the bag till the Olympics, for he was aiming for the Olympics gold medal. He did not improve within such a short time frame, he simply did not try his absolute best in the previous competitions.
