These are great little cars. In Australia they come with a 1.4L Supercharged + Turbocharged engine, and they rip along nicely. Pretty good handling. Build quality is also pretty good. I've got a 2014 model and it always makes me smile when I get in and start it up. For long distance stuff I've got a E-Class, but I use the Beetle as a 'town car' and it's perfect.

They’re actually available with a 1.2 L engine a 1.4 L engine a 1.8 L engine a 2.0 L engine and a 2.5 L engine personally I recommend the 1.8 L engine and the 2.0 L engine and the 2.5 L engine, and if you have the 1.2 L engine or the 1.4 L engine and you like it that’s great but those are underpowered in my opinion but again if you like those ones that’s great.

I've loved the Beetles I've had. A 2009 sand coloured one, over 289,000 miles and still going. My first 3rd generation, a 2013 black Diesel-powered beast, giving me 42 to 48 miles per gallon, totaled in 2021, my second 3rd generation was a 2013 white Diesel-powered convertable. I lost it in December of last year. I now have a 2014 Eos.

I've been in the business professionaly for getting on 40 years, so bought and sold more than my fair share of Beetles ( in all guises ) All of that Beetle bashing Is fine providing you make clear this is " just your opinion" the 1998 Beetle arriving here in UK in the spring of 2000, allegedly on the W reg plate and usually in Jade green metallic or Sun yellow ( although such was demand many people bought left hand drives ones just to say they owned one ) it proved an instant hit, and considering it was built on the legendary VW Golf platform it actually drove rather well indeed, people loved it when they could finally get there hands on one, and far from not fitting in the current VW line up it enhanced it ! .... in fact for much of the early to mid 2000's you couldn't get cheap beetles in the used car market for love nor money, more so if they were TDi's or rare as hens teeth high spec V5's ... yes, they had their faults, window regulators failed often, dashboards could light up like Christmas trees's ( show me a VAG car from this period that doesn't) and because of that feeling you mention of the car appearing large from the inside, body sills were very prone to getting damaged and squashed on a regular basis... BUT ... VW sold loads, and posh girls were indeed able to transport their bejeweled yappers in comfort, some even had the desirable and much sought after sunroof, and that's before we even touch on the convertible, the auto box versions were practically bulletproof, and the vase feature ( although silly and a pure design add on ) was also itself much missed if it happened to not be present when you sold one. The 2012 model is a different beast altogether, better built, more environmentally sound, and yes I'd agree, better looking in some respects, but to dismiss the retro Beetle it replaced as an awful or terrible car is to do it an injustice, it was, and remains one of the most recognizable pieces of automotive design at a time when the world went retro in a big way, paving the way for the likes of the Fiat 500 and BMW Mini etc: ......Mark Anthony, August 2020.

I had an original beetle back in the 70s. It did have character and made a good noise but the handling was a bit tail happy, for a young man and it wasnt very comfortable. You were squashed inside it and it took forever to get any warm air into the cabin, so you were always wiping the screen. But people loved them, which is why they made so many i suppose. Mine was pretty rusty too. Not driven a new one but i dont mind this model. Totally agree about the previous gen. good vid.

I remember one day I saw some kids getting off the school bus and they walked by my house as I was getting out of my car and they asked me is that a slug bug? I looked at those kids and I said yes it is absolutely a slug bug, and then he punched his brother in the shoulder which brought so much joy to my face because they recognized my car immediately and did exactly what me and my brother would do and that’s so adorable, and so endearing to know that this beetle carries on the legacy of slug bug punch him in the shoulder.

Officially this is the MK2 Beetle according to VW’s own website. They wait that the (1997-2011) New Beetle was its own thing. The New Beetle was a reboot while the (2012-2019) Beetle was a continuation of the Classic Beetle.

This is one of those cars that makes my list of possible used cars...but with reservations.
1.) I wouldn't buy one without putting the AAA on speed dial on my phone.
2.) The most dependable engine/transmission combo is the 5 cylinder with automatic transmission. (Was that combination even offered in European markets?)
3.) If possible, only as a convertible.
    4.) VERY, VERY color dependant.

I have a 1.2 tsi manual shift. Bought in 2013, is still brand new, perfect, very silent also after 140.000km... Ok, some interventions during the years, changed injectors, changed chain, the rest only normal maintenance, the general quality is good. Maybe it depends how people preserve the cars, mine always in garage, all regular checks as written in the manuals. Not sure if worth the more powerful engines, as you have more noise and for sure more consumes... I think that is a very nice car to do some travel in couple. If you pretend to have a sport car maybe is better to go to another model. Ok, there is the 2.0 benzin version, but, the it remains quite big, heavy, big steering wheel and 4 seats... so... no, for performance drive better another models (Porsche? If you like classic design), leave the Beetle to who like to drive in relax, quite comfortable and have a car a bit different from all the other ones. My honest opinion. :)

Not sure if anyone’s already asked but have you considered putting outtakes on (if you make any mistakes that is)? I’d be spewing words out in the wrong order and missing gears all over I imagine. Always good videos, great work. 👍🏼

I can definitely see VW make an electric Beetle based on the MEB platform. They can even make it rear engined, just like the VW ID.3.

I find getting alignment/ tracking being done successfully very very rare in my area atleast. Only one place have been able to do it to an acceptable level.

At least they didn’t abandon the floor mounted gas pedal like Audi...
I can’t be the only one who strongly prefers them over hanging pedals... Just feels like you’re driving something more posh 😀

The beetle I like is the previous model in the RSI version, I have to have agree with Matt as in I like retro when it’s done tastefully. Anyway Matt you should be doing stand up and specialise in one liners.

Well, in fairness, the Original Beetle design had only two features that a certain very short, and very unfunny man who wore an Oliver Hardy moustache; came up with that were incorporated into the vehicle's final design. People forget, he was a car guy. Obsessed with automobiles. Sad that folks think *he* designed the car entirely himself. And literally the only _good_ idea he ever came up with was the concept of a car that the masses could afford to buy. Just that one idea! That one and only noble idea.
The 3rd Gen. Beetle is just a nice-looking car. Wouldn't mind renting one during the times my car is in the shop for a few days. Though far from pragmatic to live with, on a daily basis.

even in the Passat Bluetooth is rubbish I have to play something from the phone speaker first so I can use Bluetooth media which doesn't make any sense (just an extra stupid step), and that's if you are lucky enough to connect your phone to the car
