My 2014 Beetle has 65k miles with zero issues. It has a five cylinder engine (no turbo) and easily keeps up with anybody on the road. It's also very roomy inside and looks very cool. Not sure why Scotty is so hard on them. They are fun cars to drive and very inexpensive to own.

Back in the late 70's, a guy that I went to high school with had a Beetle. He proudly told me that he had taken the engine right out of that car, carried it into the house and put it on his kitchen table to work on. A DIY dream car!

My 2001 manual beetle is still going strong with 234k miles. Never an issue beyond a couple sensors. Never garaged and the paint still looks great. Still getting 34mpg. Still love screaming it around curves like it's on rails. Ending the beetle? That's what they said then before. Then they updated it. It will be back as electric\hybrid.

The new beetle refreshed in 2012 is a pretty nice car with the turbo. It’s just a very distinctive design meant to be a fun toy like car, it’s not meant to be a common econobox family car like everything else out there. It boggles my mind how many young people gravitate toward these family 4 door sedans now. There all pretty much designed the same with the same colors. Love it or hate it, at least the new beetle had personality. I am not so sure about Scotty’s statement on only 500k being sold from 1998-2018.

My wife had an '02 New Beetle. The 2.0l engine burned oil from day 1 despite religiously following the break-in routine. Instrument cluster failed first month. Paint peeled on rocker panels. Once it hit 50K or so and started developing corroded electrical contacts INSIDE the car, we got rid of it. NOT a well-engineered vehicle.
Now the '68 Beetle I'm my garage? Runs like a champ and is super easy to work on. I'd never daily drive it but hey, it's still around after 50 years!

2012-2019 Beetles are the 2nd Gen of the “New Beetle” and are very worthy of owenership. The drive and handle great. If you want just a durable and reliable version, go for the 2.5L engine and the Automatics in the 2012-2019 Beetles are very reliable as compared to the 1st Gen autos. Sedans can be found for good value, Convertibles seem to be keeping premium prices.

Find a different trustworthy mechanic that'll charge the labor less, I've replaced the timing belt off my Golf 2.0 it's the same timing belt configuration. Being a single cam it's really not that bad to replace, I guess there's just less working space on the beetle than the Golf but it took me 3 1/2 hours to do which isn't that bad for a timing belt.

To each his own, remember that the 60's and 70’s was a different time. Retrospect the car cost as much as a set of tires on my 4x4. So cars are held at higher standards and you pay for that but we weren't rich so we worked on our own cars. Not a slam on your comment but that car was the sign of its time and they are still sought after. Old cars are fun without computers but can be retrofit with killer mods, new cars have no space to put your hands in there, you need a obd sensors and a car lift, and far less adjustments & maintaining.

The Beetle has gone through three distinct generation/body types. The Type-1 as you said, the feminized New Beetle from 1998-2011, and the sportier Newer Beetle from 2012-current. The current version is awesome, the styling is more body line similar to the Type-1 yet modernized and refined. Sure, it still sits on a GTI platform but it's got way more character than a GTI. My 6 speed manual with the 2.0 Turbo is a blast to drive, it's fast and hugs the road like a sports car. It's been very reliable and besides some minor paint issues I love it and would buy another if they kept them around. Honestly I think VW marketing is trash, as with many European cars they assume their product will sell itself. If they would have given the newer Beetle some decent PR and advertising a lot of people would have been much more intrigued and gone in for a test drive and figured out it's a very nice car.

I actually completely forgot about this version, and the fact they were still even making it. Also given VW's recent bad history with screwing around with the EPA ratings on their new car releases a couple of years ago, I can see why these things never sold.

I only continuous problem with my 98 vw beetle was headlights. I did have issue trying to change out taillight bulbs because the bolt on the tails would spin in the plastic housing, fixed it with after market lights. The other problem which was also common was the window regulators which went in both doors. Oh and the hood latch, and rear manual latch, lol. The oil burning has always been an issue with VW and Audi. I was told it was by design. I put a ton of miles on her as well with no mechanical engine and trans issues. Have you ever drove a Fiat? It actually drives great, fairly quiet, nice infotainment system, and as much as I hate to say it, I enjoy driving it. Too soon to tell if it would last and be reliable with only 10k miles on it, but I owned a pre-2012 model (200) and those were absolute junk and sat way too low to the ground...everybody destroyed the front end on those models. My initial thoughts on the 2017 Beetle that I have is actually positive and don't have a bad thing to say other than with the rear headrests installed you got some pretty bad blind spots out the back window.

Hey Scotty. That green 4X4 Beetle you had in the top right corner is actually listed as a white 1971 Rover with a 3,528 cc engine. I'm guessing it's an old Landrover chassis with a Beetle body stuck on top. It's still on the road too.VW's mistake was putting the engine in the front. The purists just weren't interested.

My wife has a 2003 beetle that we'll pass on to our daughter. It's not a bad car at all. We haven't had any problems with it. I religiously maintain it.

Replacement car suggestion idea: Used 2013+ electric car, like a Leaf, Spark EV, 500e, or Focus Electric. Great for commuting and errands (most people don't use a second car for anything more than that); the other car can be for long trips. Cheaper to buy, cheaper to maintain, quieter, and smoother than a new gas car.

Karla Coppock no, but then again I have the leather seats covered. My only complain is the convertible top where if it hasn't been used it doesn't go completely down.

The 2012-19 Beetle is NOT a New Beetle and unfortunately Scotty lumps it into that earlier flop. It's a good car especially the V5 engine in the first 2 years and made very well
