For the record: JJ Burnel is singing lead vocals on both London Lady and Princess Of The Streets. He also did on Ugly. JJ is usually singing his own lyrics. He came up with most of the riffs. Hugh would put on a melody or vocal line. Dave coloured with his keyboard parts and Jet was no more (but at the same time no less) than a tight drummer. All four band members shared writing credits. I'm sure there will be more tracks to love on their debut album. Stay tuned.
'No more than a tight drummer.' Utter bollocks.
Youve got to do the Song WALK ON BY if you love Dave Greenfields keyboard playing then this song is him at his very best. Great singing, great bass, amazing guitar solo just an incredible song overall
Absolute MUST HEARS,, The Stranglers "Walk On By",, "Strange Little Girl" & Last But Certainly Not Least,, In Honor & Memory Of Dave Greenfield,, .
"And If You Should See Dave"..R.I.P. Dave 🙏 ❤
"Walk On By" is great. The style of singing turns the meaning of the lyrics to rather different.
More Stranglers, that's great. Their song Always The Sun got me through a very bad time. I love everything about the Hugh era.
What an amazing track
Great times it was on the jukebox constantly at the Swan at Radcot and everyone sang it every night
Hilarious times to hear it 5 times in a row !
Hi Justin. Dave from London. Just when we thought we had seen the Flight Of The Rat, you've returned to this album at last (thanks also, Christian). This got played so much by my then flatmate in London's Shepherds Bush. London Lady is the one that grabs me, but I like your description of Princess as dirty blues. That's The Stranglers for you: great songs and musicianship played dirty. Incidentally, Dingwalls was a famous music club in Camden market - I went to many famous London venues like The Marquee and The Roundhouse back in the day but Dingwalls passed me by.
My song reference Flight Of The Rat is by Deep Purple. These refs are not meant to be requests - I am just happy to listen to whatever you choose, especially if it is new to me.
Yeah memories of Dingwalls and all those other north London venues. Mostly ruined now.
To anyone who says Stranglers aren't the chuffing best, I DISAGREE!
The fact that these are two of the less-known tracks from the album and they are still quality says a lot about the stature of Rattus Norvegicus. I think my favourite track would be Goodbye Toulouse, but it's a close thing with about five others. No More Heroes and Black And White are also great albums.
Agree. These are the "worst" two tracks on the album to me, but they're still good!
Best track on the album....Down In The Sewer ! Fave ....The Grip ....Daves, keyboards JJs bass 👌
FINALLY!!! Princess of the streets is one of my favourite songs by them and It’s my favourite on the album. This album And the next 3 albums No More Heroes, Black And White And The Raven They’re all Amazing. The Raven is their best album and you should do that one next after this one.
@@Katehowe3010 another great album I love the white side and the way it gets darker on the black side first post punk album
@UCdmPUWzThkqKcbfF5ZE-orA black and white I think was the first proper post punk album. Wire are another great band first 3 albums are great. 154 my favourite. No more heroes has moments which sound post punky too.
This is their best album
Those first 4 albums were terrific but what happened with The gospel according to the men in black ?
Ding walls was a club in camden london. The sings about a groupie
Well, that put an extra step in my Monday!!! Great tune...great bass.
Great review JP - love this whole album but for me the absolute highlight is the last section or "outro" of "Down In The Sewer".
PLEASE Read This To The Bottom:: All Musicians Know,, If You're Going To Cover A Song,, That You Only Have 2 Options..Either You Keep It Close/Show Respect To The Original Or,, You Make It Totally Your Own/Style..It Is Absolutely Super Rare To Be Able To Do Both & You Must Be Very Talented To Pull That Off..Well,, The Stranglers Did Just That,, To Prove/Truly Appreciate That,, All You Have To Do Is Listen To The Original First,, Dionne Warwick "Walk On By",, Then Immediately After,, Listen To The Stranglers "Walk On By"..I Am A Former Singer/Songwriter/Musician & It Is Absolutely Incredible To Me That The Stranglers REALLY Made This One Their Own In A Drastic Way,, Yet At The Same Time/Some How/Some Way,, Still Manage To Also Keep/Show True Respect/Tribute To The Original..In My Humble Opinion,, This One More Than Any Other,, Shows Just How Truly Talented They Were/Are..R.I.P. Dave 🙏 ❤
Hi JP! Thanks for doing more tracks from this album. Looking forward to you listening to the rest as it really is a great album. The quality of the musicianship the Stranglers display puts the lie to the belief that Punk was played by people with no talent. Like any genre the best bands were excellent players.
Nah, if they can play, they aren't punk.
Only joking. Otherwise where would we place Toy Dolls besides punk?
I've got a myth rattling around in my head which says that the "London Lady" of the song was a famous English groupie was was passing her prime and becoming somewhat of a faded rose.
"Making love to The Mersey Tunnel with a sausage" is not to be taken literally. It is a carnal metaphor referring to the non-compatibility of certain body parts.
When this band burst onto the scene in the mod 70s, they certainly announced they were not going to be a light pop group!
If the band didn't grab you by their name, then certainly their musical skill and the thumping bass of Burnel...and of course Dave Greenfield's keys.
If you haven't done it yet; you must have a reaction to "Nice And Sleazy".
If I remember, London Lady was about a hated female music journalist ...
Be patient, you'll get there. How could you not be passionate about this band. Wait until you get "Down in the Sewer" with them. Prog Punk at it's best. This will be your next favorite song. You really get that feeling of sludging through the muck on a London street.
Any chance of a Stranglers playlist?
@@jasmineblack9778 listen to their debut album!
@@Pilcha. it's my fave album along with the Yello albums 'Stella' & 'You Gotta Say To Another Excess'
Dingwalls was/maybe still is a club in Camden Town London.
I love the intro of this song. Recently picked up a bass guitar, this and peaches are my all time favourite tracks to play. JJ is an absolute god!
this was one of my favourit bands of my teen years, heard them on the peal radio show, had to buy the album, i was 16 and thought them the most original band in the world, well i was young hahahaha.
but not far from the truth :)
I love this song, I just love it. And I have loved it for over 40 years. I enjoy it in my car and it is dangerous on the road when me and Princess of the Streets are on it.
Love the Stranglers a few excellent albums 👌
At this remove, it's difficult to see how The Stranglers got lumped in with the punk bands other than they played the same venues and sang in their own accents. They were a good bit older and the music more sophisticated in 1977 than The Sex Pistols, The Lurkers, Slaughter & The Dogs etc. I do love the references to The Mersey Tunnel and Dingwalls Dancehall which remind you that this is not American music. It remains a good listen though and I wonder if you would like the Generation X debut album which "stars" Billy Idol and, to my ears is a good halfway house between the sounds of The Pistols and The Stranglers.
Generation X debut LP is a good pop-punk album but personally I prefer their second, Valley of the Dolls produced by Ian Hunter.
I always think that The Stranglers are what punk would have sounded like if a major influence had been The Doors rather than The Velvet Underground. You can hear that in Princess of the Streets, and parts of "Down in the Sewer" are very Doorsy.
Something I've always maintained is that they weren't punk but they challenged listeners with their lyrics and attitude, musically far more sophisticated than the majority of bands crashing onto the scene back then, of course one of the big lies about punk was that anyone could pick up a guitar and play, the bands that led it all The Pistols, The Clash etc were actually more than capable musicians.
That was fun! Thanks for giving everyone's favorite bands, music, a chance! We love your reactions and hearing what you think of our favorite music. The music that you love depends on many things...sometimes it's just as simple as the music you remember from your youth. I can appreciate really good music from other decades...60s, 70s, but my 80s New Wave its what moves me inside. There is mediocre music on every decade but also talent and music gems everywhere. I went through a period where I would listen to a lot of Japanese rock. Have you ever heard of X-Japan and Yoshiki? He's considered today's Mozart. I love their song "Art of Life"!
JJ Burnel is singing lead vocals.
Speaking Of Kicks In The Pants (Pun Intended)...Sparks "Angst In My Pants"..Classic...Also,, "Eaten By The Monster Of Love"..("Don't Let It Get Me!!,, Don't Let It Get Me!!"..Lol.)
It's not Hugh Cornwell who sings lead on "London Lady" & "Princess of the Streets" but bassist Jean-Jacques Burnel.
Justin, don't wait too long before doing the rest of the album ! .-)

As you are doing the Rattus album, skip to the end of side 2 and listen to Down in the sewer. Punk prog rock at it’s finest.
Then have a listen to their cover of Walk on by, a Bert Bacharach song. It has the dirtiest bass sound ever, overlaid with Dave Greefields soaring keyboards. Six and a half minutes of pure joy.
Also bassist Jean Jac Burnell sings on both of these songs
Next album to listen to is "Black and White."...out of it's time, experimental and pure genius.
You're right about everyone having "must hear" bands. It's the combination of passion and everyone having different opinions (if everyone thought the same thing about everything, the world would be a dull place). For me, XTC, along with two artists you haven't reviewed yet (The Church and Robyn Hitchcock) - but The Stranglers are a powerful guilty pleasure :)
I’m going to see them live on Thursday happy days, you definitely should do “Walk on By” it’s fantastic
In the book The Stranglers Song by Song 1974-1990, Hugh Cornwell says this about "London Lady":
"It's about a femal journalist from the time. I came up with the heavy chords and said to John, "I've got this bit of frenetic guitar, let's make a song with it". He wrote the lyrics about this loose woman who I think he had a relationship with. The Song isn't all about the woman. There are a lot of references to drugs in the song and the fact that people who take speed and coke end up talking rubbish all night. Next day you think they're stupid and that's one of the sad things about amphetamine and coke. There's also a reference to the punk obsession with plastic. It's a substitute fabric, so by definition it's not the real thing. Plastic was so revered that it became the real thing, so we thought people who thought the plastic was the real thing were sick. There was a phrase that The Rolling Stone came up with, "Starfucker". The original idea is a starting point for what becomes a generalised view of things. Some of the lines are directed at one individual, but there might be other lines directed at someone else. 'London Lady' is a generic term for someone who hangs around looking for the action, whether they work in the business or just hang around bands. There was a lot of loose flesh going around in those days and sometimes you wouldn't even remember who you'd slept with two days before. It was that ridiculous.
It was definitely meant to be humorous. As for the meaning of the song, the people who behave in that manner, libertines with little respect for themselves can fuel misogyny. They become jokes and cartoon stereotypes for their sex. But in the same way, because we were doing this with them, we became cartoon stereotypes for what we were, which was rock musicians."
I saw them at a club in about 1979 or 1980 and as we were leaving, the band was coming down the stairs as we were going up and the bassist growled and bit my arm in passing as we were saying great show. Not hard, but kind of perfect.
Dingwall is a small music venue in London. This was a song about a particular person that hung around there.
"London Lady" is about Caroline Coon. She is now an artist, but in the 70s, she was a music journalist who had a reputation for getting intimate with musicians. JJ wrote and sang those lyrics. Dingwall's was a club they played in those days. They famously got into a brawl there with The Ramones, Sex Pistols, and Clash. After that, music publications didn't support their music. They were rough young men (three of them) and that is reflected in their music. Jet, the drummer, was older and wiser. More menacing too. He recently passed away (December 6, 2022). Their music matured as they did.
Classically Trained Singer/Songwriter/Pianist Tori Amos Would Enjoy The Stranglers "Strange Little Girl" So Much That She Decided To Do Her Own Cover Of It In 2001.
So glad you're getting back to the Stranglers. You haven't given up.
Maybe you should investigate the Raven era Stranglers too. Don't Bring Harry, Nuclear Device etc
When ever I hear about the Stranglers, I think of Season 14, Episode 2 of Time Team where they put in a surprise appearance. Who knew they were fans of archeologists? Fun punk is a good description. I like it though I prefer the lyrics in Weakerthans songs. i.e. "Aside" or "Watermark". In "London Lady" wonder if he is actually dissing London City. In "Princess of the Streets" I find the tone of his voice seems to be mocking the narrator as much as he is slagging the woman in the song. If this was intended then this song is subtler than it first lets on. Musically I think these are both great songs.
It's actually JJ Burnell on vocals on this track not Hugh Cornwell.
Track 1: exactly what i liked about them as a kid
2: unexpectedly quirky - good guitar solos but somewhat similar to Grand Passion era Doll by Doll
Which brings me to my Top 5 Underdogs 4JP list:

Doll by Doll “Palace of Love”
The Passions -“im in love with a German Film Star”

(The Final Cut straight after the Wall too🤣🤗)
They had a sense of humour.
Rattusnorvegicus and black and white are two of the best albums ever recorded , mind blowingly repetitive in my mind for weeks just after a quick listen to a track or two , so addictive you have to keep listening to them
More from the best punk era band from the UK by a country mile. 🙃
Dingwall's was a club in London at the time. I always understood that this song was about Caroline Coon, but I guess only Hugh really knows the truth. Nice reaction to 2 great songs from the Stranglers ❤💛💚
No , it’s JJ Burnell singing Justin , sorry mate 👍🏴
Golden Brown, European Female, La Folie just a few must hears from these guys!
Speaking of Dingwalls, I have a double album called "Greasy Truckers Live at Dingwalls Dance Hall", featuring four prog bands: Camel, Henry Cow, Global Village Trucking Company and Gong.
I always love the Roxy Music "Everybody Solo" thing. These guys got lumped into the "punk" thing but like their American counterparts Television, it's kinda hard to be punk when you're a proficient musician. These first few Stranglers records were genius.
Stranglers, Television and Can are my holy trinity. Parliament-Funkadelic might have transcended God however
"Dingwalls" was a music venue in London with it's own particular "scene"...
You're welcome.
Dingwalls is a venue in Camden Market, London - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dingwalls
Dingwall's is a major music venue in London - during the 1980s it was the city's equivalent of New York's CBGBs.
I used to go there all the time in the late 70s and 80s a superb place in Camden Town , London and saw many many bands , happy days !
Ah, takes me back to London 1977. You either lived it or you didn't. This is what great punk era music sounded like, not that modern pop-punk trash from the States.
Awww man both of these are iconic to me “ making love to the Mersey Tunnel with a sausage have you ever been to Liverpool”
That’s poetic on a par with Shelley or Byron in my opinion . 😆
👍🏴
So glad you're getting back to the Stranglers. You haven't given up.
Maybe you should investigate the Raven era Stranglers too. Don't Bring Harry, Nuclear Device etc
Dingwalls bullshit refers to the fight/standoff between the The Stranglers and the Pistols/Clash which saw the Stranglers ostracized from the punk scene. This happened after a gig the Stranglers played with the Ramones at the Roundhouse.
Dingwalls = a famous club (still in existance, I worked the door there early 90s) in Camdon London. When you see mirrors you get the shivers = cocaine/speed reference.
Apologies if someone's already replied about this, but I think Dingwalls was a club or venue in London at the time.
Great band and another who put on incendiary shows.
That organ is signature Stranglers, check it out on Get a Grip onYourself, makes you shiver with pleasure.
Jj is the singer on both of these tracks not Hugh
Lovely appreciation mate
Fantastic band
I’m sure it’s already below , but the Mersey tunnel is a WIDE tunnel and this lady is an …ahem Experienced lover ..ahem and perhaps he feels that what he might bring to the party might not touch the sides so to speak 😅
I think its a reference to a female reporter/journalist JJ had a thing with. If my memory serves me right.
Hello JP. You have to know that those two songs have been writen and sang by JJ Burnel. They are about girls he had relationship with. In the early days, of The Stranglers and until the FELINE album on 1983, both Hugh Cornwell and JJ Burnel shared the writing and the lyrics delivery. The Stranglers is my favourite band, they have accompanied me since I was 16 in the late 70's and I have seen them giging many times. I'm glad you appreciate them and give them the recognition they diserve but don't always have had.
Dingwalls is a night club in camden london england at it se rocking in the 70s, 80s, and 90s
Great break up song. Check out some of The Jam buddy.
..pretty sure Jean does the vocals on London lady, & princess of the street....he sings a number such as 5 minutes etc
the strangler s.....under my top 10 band s ever
People mention Walk on By a lot, but this is a sarcastic cover of a great crooner classic, 🌵
a bit like God save the Queen by the Pistols, it's not really theirs, nor does it represent their writing abilities
When Hugh Cornwell spent 6 weeks in jail [minor drug charge] in the 70's, the band had special guests joining them on stage, including, Robert Fripp AND Peter Hammill, TOGETHER!!!. Cool huh! Such a fantastic band. definitely one of a kind.
Now THATS a lineup!
Brilliant album great reaction, figure the lyrics out 😂
Dingwalls is a famous club in London, great choice of material yet again
Top real band!🏴🇬🇧
😁Both songs are The Stranglers havin fun 😁
I've always took the track London Lady to be about London itself & not a person.
My favorite Strangers song, and of my favorites songs, period, is "Golden Brown".
1st 2 lps the best, nasty angry after went soft commercial. 😝
Dingwall is like dingbat but not a symbol its a person thats stupid.
JJ mentions at some gig, he was trying to tap this lass up and she wanted nowt to do with him, so this is where the song comes from. (Princess of the Streets)
With "Princess" I name them The 70's Doors.
Dingwalls was a London nightclub.
JJ Burnel sings London lady
Dingwalls was also a music venue in London..
Dingwalls was a music venue in London at the time.
What did you think of the expanse finale
Princess of the Streets all the way
so nice to see an older generations muzick
I really like your interpretation and commitment to analyzing the song. I must say you stand out from other RUclipsrs. Cheers!
Thanks so much! :D
Justin, I'm so pleased you gave The Stranglers a try.
One of the big punk bands of the late 1970's.
Rattus ia a great album. "Princess of the Streets" is my favourite Stranglers track also :)
Ty Kav!
Man you’ve got it in one , I’ve been playing this since 1977 and you get it in one , tip of the hat sir 🎩
👍🏴
Thank you Jay :D
Can't wait till you hear DOWN IN THE SEWER.
JJ was the singer not Hugh
Either you have good taste, or good advice, (or both).
Any Stranglers fan is a friend to me , 🎸
Lots of good advice and a hunger for new music :D Ty movid
As you're going through rattus I can't wait until you reach the track "Ugly" that in my opinion has one of the greatest lines ever written in a song ever 😉
@@Katehowe3010 starts with " I guess I shouldn't have" ?? 😁
@@Katehowe3010 first album I ever bought with my hard earned cash when I left school, and it holds a place in my heart to this day.. Lol
Dave Greenfield was a keyboard genius (and it's so sad to have to say was, rather than is) and his playing on Princess of The Streets is just one of so many career highlights. And yes, Princess is one of my favourits Stranglers tracks too. Walk on By coming soon Justin? Hope so!
You've just got yourself a sub for this! Thanks 😎
Appreciate that Andy! Thank you
Feline is my fav
Great sound. There was more to the 1970s than just prog, take it or leave it.
Some of the lyrics are downright nasty, I don't think you make a lot of female fans with this. Other than that, I do like The Stranglers.
Ah, back when casual misogyny was so much fun! There honestly isn't a single dud track on this album; loving your reactions.
Substitute "back when people weren't afraid of woke bullshit" for "back when casual misogyny" and I'd agree with the rest. There's nothing about either of these songs which indicates hatred of womankind.
All those recent songs, Sometimes, Hanging around, walk on by, Raven and many others ,🎸played them in 90s and later...great fan.
So nice to see young someone appreciate them, very inventive band who went through different periods
Hey dude glad you guys in America like this band, am from Ireland and I grew up listening to this band check out la foile by the stranglers the bassist is French!! good work pm.
They did not advertise it much but Dave Greenfield had been doing session work before Stranglers. Bassist Jean Jacques Burnel had played some classical guitar before picking up the bass.
But back in the punk and new wave it wasn't - and sitll isn't - in vogue to mention those kind of things.
The thing with the stranglers is not to compare them with other bands or artists. They were of their own type and sound, cornwells scratchy guitar and vocal style, burnels dirty bass lines, greenfeilds swirling arpeggios, blacks tight rhythm.. 4 musicians who came together at the right time and created some great stuff with an unmistakable sound.. Yeh not everyone's cup of tea if you want to compare them to the pink floyds etc of this world but supplied many many people with many great songs and albums and putting their own stamp on it... 😁
