RUclips is still definitely my favorite platform. I'm 23, so of the "younger generation" but I cannot stand TikTok, I deleted it after a couple of months. I still prefer longer videos, with more details and information than I can get from someone speed-talking in a 30-60 sec ad

@@anh7807I love shopping and can easily go overboard. I have learned to look at makeup especially eyeshadow with a critical eye. For example I could have easily bought Tarte Toasted Marshmallows, and Urban Decay Naked Heat. I personally think these look the same after looking at them. There are also three drugstore brands that look very similar.. I chose a drugstore brand for the price, package and the fact it comes with a mirror.
The drugstore brands are Cover Girl, Rimmel, and Kokie. I chose Kokie.

Back in the “Morphe code” day, people got annoyed at commercials disguised as entertainment. Honestly now though, with Amazon hauls, Shein, sponsored videos etc…. It feels like almost all content is a commercial. I skip almost all of them and have unsubscribed to most creators now and listen to way more podcasts instead while I’m getting ready. I understand why influencers do it, but I’m not the audience anymore.

I'm honestly fed up with social media in general because of the consumerism that's taken over. The only platform I'm still actually engaging in is youtube because overall the creators I watch dont push sales on their videos, they only have affiliate links on their description boxes. But I also recognize that one of the big reasons why I havent fallen into consumer mode is because most of my favourite creators are not from my country, so the links dont really work cause there's no shipping available for my region or the money conversion is way out of my league (for instance, 1 dollar = 5 BRL which is the Brazilian coin). But also... idk, I truly believe shopping in general has become a way for people to try and fill the void and the anguish left by the way we're currently living, how society has been shapen and has been shaping the way we relate to one another, the scent of hopelesness that hangs in the air with all the messed up stuff that's been going on. I understand we all need to make money, pay our bills, try to live somewhat comfortably, but at the same time I see companies profiting out of our suffering. Idk, late stage capitalism is wild.

I am a very small creator and I try to limit the use of affiliate links on my channel for that reason. I do work full time and RUclips/makeup is my hobby and passion, but it does severely impact the money you earn. I definitely could not live off of adsense right now. I prefer long form content because I like to watch while I'm doing dishes or projects. I appreciate your honesty and integrity. It is so disappointing when influencers sell out, pushing products they don't really like because they can make a buck. I don't mind at all when there are paid partnerships and or links- to me its all part of it but I really don't like being deceived. Short form (generally speaking) is like putting on a TV movie and skipping to the commercials.. some are obviously worse offenders than others. I understand the "don't hate the player, hate the game" stance but I just want the players to play a clean game. I enjoy getting to know the personality and insite of my favorite creators. I seek out links when I am shopping because if I am going to buy based on your video, it's kind of like me giving you a tip or giving back in some way and lets face it, we don't mind a discount. Influencer marketing through just PR is way more cost effective for brands than paying for an ad campaign. When my favorites get sponsorships and or collaborations, I truly am happy for them.

I understand that this is a job for so many creators. RUclips is my primary source of entertainment, and I have absolutely no shame about financially supporting the creators who spend all their time making quality content for viewers like me. I think a lot of people understand how this works and are perfectly okay with using things like affiliate links. I make SURE to use affiliate links, and not because it saves me 10% or whatever. I do it so that the content creator will get paid for their time, so they continue to get PR. At the same time, I have over 40 palettes probably and I have really slowed down on purchasing. I really don't need *ANOTHER* palette. At this point, I really just want a direct way to tip or pay the creators, so I appreciate things like Patreon and the RUclips version of that.

I percieve most short form content to excist only for the views and nothing has actual value.

Your channel growth over the last couple of years only further proves what your saying about people wanting better quality videos. Also, it doesn't matter to me, to an extent! When you moved to the US I know you had to update a lot of your equipment for filming, as someone whos been watching your channel for years I've watched your subscribers double since then & I noticed you were at 60-70k for a bit before you moved and did the update. I think when we first start watching a channel, quality is one of the things were looking for, along with knowledge and other things. For a lot of people, once we watch someone for a while they almost become apart of your daily life, at that point quality may not matter as much anymore.

I just commented on Robert Welsh's video about MLM. Where I believe influencer marketing is a more modern type of MLM. Where parasocial relationships are very normal nowadays. MLMs make people spend money because they want to stay in a "community", it's the same with influencers and "fans" where people are influenced to make purchases just to feel connected with the community. We live in very weird times.

The posts asking you to DM for links are exploding in popularity & I absolutely will not engage with them. It's extreme MLM vibes.

I love this conversation! I’ve definitely seen a shift from people uploading for the love of it to people uploading as a job (promoting codes, links etc). I feel nostalgic for old school YT. I’ve been on YT for 4 years as a hobby & can relate to what you said about being so enthusiastic at the start. It’s hard to keep interested sometimes as I feel such an outsider with the content I create. I’m so proud to have found a balance though. Like every hobby, sometimes I want to do it, other times I just want to relax on the couch & that’s ok 💖

“Viewers almost demand the kind of content that takes creators 50-60 hour work weeks.” - It amazes me with some comments I see from viewers. Like a creator will do a really in-depth video showing all different application methods, with primer and without, with powder and without, etc. WAY more than what I see from most creators. AND it’s like there will STILL be a comment or more that are like, “oh this was great but next time can you also do xyz.” Like DANG, they did more than I see pretty much every other creator do and that’s still not good enough?! Like I can get the info I need to know if I want to try it or not from the in-depth review they did with how many ways they showed it. At that point it’s like, you just need to buy it yourself and try it. But there’s always people that want something more. Unfortunately, even creators who do amazing, in-depth videos will always have some comments asking them to do more. It’s crazy to me! I can’t imagine the time it takes for them to do all the actual video, b roll, close ups, comparisons, different applications (their poor faces wiping off and reapplying so many times or having to do it over multiple days in order to film it), and people still ask for more 😅😅

The CEO of Netflix answered the question “which other streaming service is your greatest competition?” with the answer “Our greatest competitor is our viewers sleep.” 😳 I just refuse to use TikTok and I’m using instagram less and less because of the weird algorithm. Before I could use hashtags to find swatches or pictures of specific beauty products. With the current algorithm they don’t show up very often unless they are extremely popular at the moment. It is easier to make a google search and then find results that will lead me to IG 🙄 I definitely prefer RUclips and in case it would shut down, then I wouldn’t use TikTok. I often need to remind myself when I see a video with poor quality lighting or poor sound quality, these are not professionals and if I made my own video it would be worse. Of course we need a reminder that variable quality is to be expected and our content creators are for the most part, real people and not professional media stars!

I agree it feels like QVC sometimes, and most of the time, I don't mind that. . .to a point. My personal turn offs are when I start to feel like they're:
    1. more interested in selling products than making me an informed consumer, ie, they don't do product comparisons or point out cheaper options.
    2. clearly focused on maintaining relationships with trendy/over-hyped or luxury brands, because again, it feels like they're more interested in pushing a product regardless of the value to the consumer.
Oh, and I'm fully a youtube person. I'd rank Instagram 2nd, and TikTok a distant 3rd.

I don't do other platforms, so I don't how that has come about elsewhere, but RUclips also has been becoming more about content creators selling stuff. It looks to me like what happened in a lot of cases was the creator started a channel to do something creative and make a living doing it, then their income got reduced, and now the only way to continue making a living is to sell stuff. The creators got sucked in because now they're invested in making their living through RUclips, and the viewers got sucked in because now we trust that content creator and are invested in their opinions as well as keeping their channel alive. I started watching RUclips to learn how to do my makeup, and creators rarely make tutorials anymore because "tutorials don't get views." If that trend continues where the videos are more about peddling their wares rather than teaching or discussing something useful, I'll probably watch a lot less RUclips next year and will be very selective about who I subscribe to!

This topic made me squeal with delight. I have a story….
One particular you tuber put her affiliate links and her products listed like this:
    Eyeliner
With no information about what, now I am in UK and at that time we couldn’t view Sephora US website (we can now) so her links were useless and I was sent to the French home page. I asked over and over to put the products and the link! She didn’t
It used to annoy me so much I could love something she was using but have no way of knowing what it was, if she didn’t mention it. I unsubscribed shortly after as it became pointless. Her obsession with making people click the links to find out what she was using became more about money than sharing information about products.

Something that has started to discourage me from watching content is that a lot of creators integrate ads into their videos. For example, sponsorships where they promote services and products that don’t have much to do with their channel or the video itself. This is the worst with video essay channels, most of which analyze special topics such as gender, fashion, historical events, etc. and advertise companies like Hello Fresh and Function of Beauty and NordVPN. Yes, we use products similar to what these brands sell in our everyday lives but I am tired to seeing/hearing the same shtick over and over again. Also, this is not 100% related, but I really dislike when creators link products they dislike or don’t recommend to their video/link tree. I know that someone else might like it but it comes across as inauthentic and makes me think that the negative comments are not true hence the positive comments aren’t, as well.

I spend a lot of time on Facebook but mostly to keep in touch with friends…so the social aspect of social media. I used to be a fan of QVC, but I feel the shopping channels have moved away from all but the biggest brands and the same ones are featured over and over again. I like that on RUclips,if you enjoy an influencer’s personality or style, you can choose who to watch and when to watch them. I don’t shop a lot though links in general, but I have definitely purchased collars and such based on my desire to support a particular creator.

This is why I will continue to support you. You’re honest and share all the information to actually help people realize the truth about sponsorships and monetization influencers get that may not readily available or disclosed. I have noticed an influx of IG accounts I follow (for professional information and recommendations for dentistry) that say the items or products are on their Amazon list and they will post a link. I shop so much from Amazon and to think that those creators get a percentage of what I purchase regardless if it’s dentistry related (to their account) or for personal use is very deceptive. Know that now I will not be clicking on anymore links due to the tracking of cookies unless it’s a creator I choose to support. I don’t think it’s responsible as a creator to not disclose this information as they should and allow the person viewing the content to make that decision to support them based on having that information if they want to. I don’t use TikTok and the platform I use most often is RUclips. FYI thank you so much! I was able to save using your code at Odens eye for the holiday bundle ❤❤
