    SORRY GUYS. The Lister is not a hit and miss. Its a throttle governed engine. My bad! ;)

      Just incase you didn't see it...Doreen Edgington has carrying on with here Husbands work in dating Listers, Send her a polite e-mail with the serial number to; Ddlwf123@aol.com she should be able to provide you some info on your Lister.

      You got two options on breaking the rust down in that Lister, and that's using warm malt vinegar, or electrolysis. I don't know if the location has power or no, but that's all right, you can run electrolysis via a car battery. Just don't use the one out of your transportation, OK?

  • @OakwoodMachineWorks
    @OakwoodMachineWorks 7 лет назад +1

    Awesome shop and setup! That's actually a throttle governed engine though, not a hit and miss. A hit n miss has a latchout block that stops ignition and ceases the flow of fuel for it to idle back to rpm, that lister is on a true 4 cycle.

    • @OakwoodMachineWorks

    With the Lister engine I would personally not try to remove the hopper. You can gain access to the valves thru to brass bungs that are above them. If the valves are in the closed position hopefully the cylinder isn't to bad just put plenty of oil in thru the spark plug hole to lube it all up in there. Also I am not sure what part of the world you are in but Listers are english built and england would be the easiest place to find a new carburetor but I would not worry just use the old one or weld it up if it is to bad. If you would like any more info on Listers I can try help out.
    With the New Way engine the usual stopping procedure would be to either shut of the fuel or short the spark. by holding in the intake valve it could burn back thru the carby and spit our burning fuel.
    Keep up the great work I really like seeing museums become alive and not just static displays. I would like to get a power hammer for the blacksmith shop at a museum I volunteer at.

    • @jacilynns6330

      Depends on clutch. Metal to metal friction could be 30 or 50 weigh oil. Not x w 50. Straight 50

    • @3535gt
      @3535gt 7 лет назад

      Jacilynn S thank you for the reply. I've looked for info on the type I have, other than taking it apart, is there any way to tell what type of clutch it has? Thanks again.

    • @jacilynns6330
      @jacilynns6330 7 лет назад +1

      a friction clutch has fiber discs. Thin oil on these 30w. a cone clutch is just metal on metal thicker weight on these.
      In later years about 1940+ it was a sealed case with fiber discs. Those you can use dextron III in.
      chances are if its an "oil weekly" and you can't see in it 50 weight would be the safest bet.

    props to ya, your'e not afraid of the old dirt and grease and not too proud to get dirty to get it working again, too many people look at something broken and think of replacing parts, well , you have to fix , not replace! its a great feeling when youve had it all apart, figured out how they made it work, and put it back again and it fires up, will you be true to your word and get the first engine running at some point?

    Justin, sorry I'm over a year late on this one - but I just found you a couple of days ago. You, your family, and your friends are doing a really good thing and it appears living a good life. Imagine 4 HP. We laugh now, but how many thousands of years did our ancestors live with and later learn to train and ride horses. That was a universal unit of work pretty much everybody, male or female, young or old, understood. How impressive it must have seemed to obtain a stationary machine that did the work of four! Your intuition in restoring these machines is inspiring.

    Pretty cool seeing motors over a 100yrs old run, and so simply. No sensors and computers. Cool video thanks Justin

    I'm loving this museum series. Also think you're a great host. Voice overs seem just a bit forced if I'm offering any constructive criticism. I hope this channel lucrative and satisfying for you. Good luck.

    Big fan of the videos and of your attitude to everything. I wish I had the skill to fix and fabricobble all the things you can. I try as best I can, but being brought up in the city and then spending way too long in school made me very good at talking about stuff... not so much at doing it. Now I live in TX hopefully I can figure out how to fix and make things without having to go to the store or pay someone else every time. You are an inspiration, sir.

    Love the drag saws in the background. I have a slightly newer version.....but be VERY careful when running one.....they can start hopping and the razor sharp cross cut blade.....well....scary.

    This video popped up in my suggestions and looked interesting. Then I recognized the Old Mill Pond museum and realized you were also in Lindale. Cool video. You gained a subscriber and maybe I'll see you around town.

    Love them hit miss engines. Great job. Be careful around that belt if it popped off and grabbed the arm it would get very messy.

    My great-grandfather had a hit-and-miss engine in his shop. It was in almost pristine condition until my uncle finally sold it. :(
    BTW, I like you little blond "assistants". (If only they would stay little, ... )

    I'm going to have to research your Lister motor but it appears to predate the more common CS model. You have a classic older lister I think. The lister company merged in the 80s and is still building other high quality Diesel engines. The CS copies are still made by two companies in India and one in china. That is how great that design was. If my memory severs me correctly the crank shaft on the single piston engine was something like three inches think. Talk about being over built. The CS stands for Cold Start and the design first was made in the early 1920s, thus making your engine even older.
    Don't get me wrong the other engines in the collection were very well built also. It's just that the Lister engine has become the hallmark of over built design.

    Hey, the old Lister, why not unbolt the 4 nuts around the base of the cylinder. Lift the whole thing off the piston. Clean out the combustion chamber, clean the piston, lap the valves. The water hopper, leave on, clean out bird nests. Put all back together. Etc etc.
