    Karate is great for kids now because instructors know how to teach kids now but in the 70s my experience was a little different. I joined a school run by a 1st gen student of Mas Oyama (kyokushin founder) and he was hard, his classes were hard,brutal, i crawled out of each class absolutely miserable (i was a really scrawny 12 yr old). It was a totally diferent experience to the old judo dojo my parents put me in as a little kid and actually put me off martial arts until i was in my 20s and discovered TCMA. TKD is good for kids now as well.

      Idk, man. I took Shotokan Karate lessons when I was a kid in the 2000s and I feel like I barely learned anything. We mostly just did katas instead of actually sparring. Your experience sounds intense but you probably learned a lot more about self defense than I did

    • @emptyemptiness8372
      @emptyemptiness8372 2 года назад +4

      @@MrGrimlocke yeah i guess it comes down to the school, the teacher and the culture its operating in. Now many schools in the west are scared of getting sued so many wont be comfortable with kids fighting incase of injury. Having said that many schools invest in pads and protection and provide a safe controlled space for kids to spar especially TKD. In Australia in the 70s(working class areas) we didnt even know what suing was, fighting was normal and kids had to toughen up, if you were bullied your parents dealt with it by sending you to boxing or karate classes and expected you to learn how to defend yourself. Thats what they payed for.

    Funny how most of our fight stories happened when we were little, I guess that's when we were immature to the point it was easier to just brawl it out. And because we were immature, people (students, staff, parents) could forgive us more easily than if we were teenagers or adults, especially when the damage we could inflict would be lethal.

    Jerry, maybe you could do more locations like these and bring your own “interview with Jerry” signs (and highlight any surrounding signs like with a focus shot?)!
    My main actual “fight” was with a local kid who kept challenging me, and I defeated with the exact two same judo moves (one trip, one hold): Three times! As SS was saying, learn a few moves can be best? I actually hardly knew any more than this at the time anyway.

    Meanwhile the polar opposite to the chop would be the palm. My main style is grappling and I dont enter cages or rings, only self defense. So most my life all I ever used were palm strikes. Palm strikes transitions well into traps and joint manipulation. Plus you dont need to worry too much about proper fist alignment to avoid injuries especially in a situation where you are caught off guard. The total momentum of the strike is the same. Its only spread out to a larger area

    from a self-defense standpoint, I almost think that training younger students is the only thing that makes sense. For the vast majority of us, the only time we're routinely in fistfights is in primary school. In the unlikely event we are in a self-defense situation when we're, say, 35, there's very likely to be a weapon involved or multiple attackers (that is, the seriousness of the attack is stepped way up over getting in a fight with a bully in 9th grade) in which case being really good at boxing or whatever is very unlikely to save you anyway. There's a very small window in which training for self-defense is practical. I often hear arguments of "I'd rather just be prepared no matter how unlikely," but is putting in 5-10 years of regular training, spending thousands of dollars, and having numerous minor injuries with probably a handful of serious ones a logical way to prepare for a situation that's very unlikely to happen anyway? I'm not saying that self-defense isn't a plus of practicing martial arts into adulthood, it certainly is, but as a primary motivator it makes little sense to me, particularly in jurisdictions where you can arm yourself more practically.

    8:46 also I did fight a lot of other children when I was a child, and I actually never pushed anyone in the face, I just kicked them really really low and then grab them and trip them, afterwards I soccer kicked them in the spine because as a kid I thought it was safer than hitting the face for some reason.
    (I played as a goalkeeper in football and some kids really disliked me because I didn't suck at it, which is tradition because the goalkeeper is generally the guy that no one wants on their team but I played there because I liked it)

    Two things so far, one, we have these exact same moves in the Bagua I study, as does many arts. So I wouldn’t call it “karate” it’s just a kick and a chop or forearm bash.
    And two, Seth, you don’t want to use just the hand to chop, you use the entire forearm. Watch Hard-to-hurts videos on chops. He has two. I committed on one because he said similar, then he corrected of course, you know because of my comments, by saying the little surface hand chop sucks but the forearm bone strikes are badass.

      The missing component Mike is not considering is that Okinawan Karate has a strong emphasis on Te-Kitae (Hand Conditioning), and the target for a shuto would generally be a soft-target, think the carotid artery etc.

  • @Domzdream

    What's funny is how people of today think martial arts doesnt work. But after seeing me sparring, they're amased at how quickly, and ahead of time I can block techniques. But it's not magic. It's just repetition. Once you know and assess movement over many years, you know which technique is generally going to follow (respective) to the way the body moves and how it folds, and where the weight distribution lies. To people, it looks like one has precognition, but really, it's merely practice.
