Her level is out of this world.
The 2015 performance of Lean on Me was during the time period when she was battling severe pneumonia on and off. 2016/17 was when she actually contemplated on quit singing and develop fear of singing on stage.

Sohyang does her own arrangements along with some input from those she keeps around her which is probably why they fit her so well; she is not just a goddess of voice, a beautiful woman, and an author, but she is a master of all aspects of her calling (music)!

exactly, thank you! 🙌 if anything, Dimash is a male version of Sohyang! (though for me who knows not the technical aspects of singing so well, Sohyang is much more a master of the key ingredient -- heart/feel)

As memory serves, Airang is one of a number of Korean folk songs...I seem to recall that there are several versions of the same name, but this one in particular was born out of the suffering of the Korean people at the hands of the Japanese in WWII, and has now come to symbolize the desire of reunification of the Koreas.
The “original” Arirang is more than 600 years old. It has 60 different versions and 3,500 different variants (I know, it’s complicated). Whereas *Arirang Alone* is a modern song, released in 1990, specifically written about reunification by a son of North Korean refugee. SoHyang version is completely different from the 1990 song but shares the lyric and also combines a portion of the original Arirang.
You could have checked Upon this rock from 2014 first which is in her vocal prime. And she could still sing this song after all these years even after the long time of pneumonia, even for an encore after the whole concert, which makes it so cool even more 😎

I recommend Sohyang's I have nothing, another Whitney Huston song she made her own. That is really legendary rendition. Oprah Winfrey is so blown away by that performance that she delivered the clip to David Foster herself lol

thanks, hope you check out more from Forestella! 2 of the members (bass and one of the tenors) were classically trained, 1 was a musical actor, and the other never had professional training but is an amazing countertenor and rock singer. They've done incredible covers of classics including "Je Suis Malade" (made famous by Lara Fabian), "Time in a Bottle," "Hijo de la Luna," and "Scarborough Fair" and also pop songs including "Warrior," Shape of You," and "Bad Romance."

36:16 The thing about Sohyang is that she didn't always have that control. Go back and look at her performances prior to 2011 or so and you'll see that she was very unstable in the 5th octave. It was clearly her sessions with Seth Riggs where something clicked and she found that perfectly balanced mix that unlocked the performer that we see today. Obviously she was blessed to have the instrument she was born with but nobody knows who she is if she hadn't put in the work to perfect it.
she is living proof that talent can only get you so far, but hard work will pay off no matter who you are

Arirang is a Korean folk song. There are about 3,600 variations of 60 different versions of the song, all of which include a refrain similar to "Arirang, Arirang, Arariyo". It is estimated the song is more than 600 years old. Arirang is included twice on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. South Korea successfully submitted the song for inclusion on the UNESCO list in 2012. North Korea also successfully submitted the song for inclusion in 2014. In 2015, the South Korean Cultural Heritage Administration added the song to its list of important intangible cultural assets. It is a symbol of the united Korean, region that is divided by the Korean War. Your story is very complex.

Kind of a weird choice to watch these versions of the performances (especially Arirang). Why do you prefer worse sound quality with no subtitles? Maybe you talked about it somewhere in the video but I’m not really interested in going through all that. Hopefully next time you react to the normal versions
Totally get it! The issue is that if I watch the videos from KBS or other major channels the live has been blocked time and time again so we’re just trying to avoid that. So I’m mostly watching the suggestions that are given to me to avoid copyright strikes.
@@carlosgsantiago most other channels I’ve seen just blur the video or even cover it entirely and that works. It’s definitely the method I personally prefer, because it means they’re still getting the best available experience and we still see the reaction, which is what we’re here for. I get that this was a livestream so that would’ve been harder to do, but Arirang is my favorite Sohyang performance so I was just disappointed. Hopefully you figure out a way around the copyright that works better 👍
