Great video. I thought I'd let you know that I managed to used your technique on quite a heavy velvet Lycra fabric. To counteract the weight, I used a reel of gardening strimmer wire. It worked a treat, just don't wind it on too narrow a tube. I found a kitchen roll tube was about right. Was making a ballroom dance dress for my daughter.
*Perfect and I’ve used it for ballon arches as **enjoyable.fishing** recommend well as other decor with parties. It is strong and will hold up well. It works so good that another decorator stole my roll at an event!*
Excited! I thought that I had imagined this. When I was a child, a million years ago, my Mom gave me the most beautiful night gown. My most favorite ever. It was a medium pale yellow with a chiffon overlay that was a bit lighter. The gown had this type of ending at the bottom and at the neckline. It came just past the knee. So adorable.
Hi, thanks for the educational video; it seems like the use of a blow dryer or heatgun may also be other options to get the nylon fishing line to stay in the new curl size, warm regards
THANK you....! Years ago, I wore banana clips in my hair that had "chiffon" bows...made like this with the ruffles.....most of my "bows" are showing wear and I need some more of them Thanks soooo much for a FANTASTIC well done tutorial ! Your directions were well explained etc.
Well dang!!! I ended up here somehow...I was looking for how to sew mitered corners!!! It must have been karma. I have several LONG skirts that I love, that I was procrastinating hemming shorter. Since I moved away from my favourite fishing river several years ago, I also have a tackle box with allll kinds of (now) useless fishing line! Good thing I never throw anything out :) My little universe converged right here! Thanks! I would never have thought of this... !!
can't wait to try! saw a nice skater dress that flared out at the bottom, now I know what to do to make it a reality. Thanks for sharing your thorough tutorial.
I'm pleased to learn something I always wanted to learn,I have the same type sewing machine ,there are so many things that I don't know on this machine, I'm still learning something new every day, thank you very much for sharing
Hi, Thanks for posting this - you make it look so easy! I seem to be losing the curls once I've sewn it into the fabric :-/ .. Any tips on how to fix this ?
It’s sooo much easier to leave a wider fabric before sewing. To trim close to the sew line after sewing, you’ll need to cut the hem longer by an inch or two. Much easier.
Truly your video seems to be awesome and very interesting and understanding and your fingernails and the color is more attractive than anything God bless you and give us more interesting tips
Hi Jacquiline.... A serger. I hadn't thought of that...but I have one! :) Thanks for the idea! That does sound faster than trying to get it to curl into the rolled hem foot on the machine. But on the serger you don't use the rolled hem foot?
alohachristine ... I hemmed (lettuce hem ruffles) 58 dresses for our show choir a year ago and saw this video. I realized Pincushion's method would take too long. My Brother Serger comes with the foot needed for lettuce hem. Check your machine's manual. Good luck!
Damn, you explained everything so well - you make it look easy(which it's so not haha). I make sewing tutorials myself, and I know exactly how hard it can be to make videos that are clear and easy to understand while still being professional with the sewing. Props!
Cherish Red Thank you so much for the kind words! A lot of work goes into our tutorials, as I'm sure you know, so it's so nice to hear when they're appreciated. And even though I've been sewing a long time, I still feel like I'm learning every day! :D
Yea, I can tell the videos would take a lot of time to make. Haha, yea I empathize - I do stop motion for my sewing videos, which takes me SO long, but I think it makes it a lot easier to understand in less time. The time you put on your videos is definitely worth it though, so keep trekking :)
+Leslie Elmore You can get it wet no problem but the heat is what sets the curl. If you throw it in the dryer, you'll more than likely lose the curly hem. horsehair braid is normally washable and dry cleanable. I'd probably still line dry instead of throwing it in the dryer.
I actually have a question. Whats the difference between this curly hem and a hem made from the horse hair braid? Or are they just two possible techniques with the same / similar outcomes?
that's a good question! In my experience, the curly hem will actually bring the hem upwards. So as it curls, it's curling up, like towards the waistline. With a curly hem, it's a good idea to adjust the length, as the skirt could be shorter than expected once it's done. With the horsehair braid, the hemline of a skirt is simply going outwards so that the bottom looks fuller. I hope that makes sense, it's kind of hard to put it in words.
I did this and it came out really good, but then I went and added a trim to it, and it sort of lost the original curliness. I somehow doubt that rolling the whole hem around a paper roll would get it back to how it was. You must have faced this issue! Please, how do I go about fixing this?
Oh, so that zig zag was going right over the edge? I thought the needle always had to be going into the fabric at all times. I like that look, and I love circle skirts, so I may try this with thinner fishing line.
Lavenderrose73 Nope, because the top thread is looping with the bobbin thread even if it's not going through any fabric. If you try it, please post a pic on our fb wall :D
It might be awhile, but I have 2 skirts made and 2 still in progress. Now that the temperature's dropping finally, I'm hoping to get them done quickly... after I get some other things taken care of, like my next test out of the way! Lol
If you dip the ends of your fishing line into clear nail polish and allow to dry. This gets rid of the sharp end and your stitch will hold the end better when starting.
it's recommended to do this on fabric like organza which probably is dry clean only so it's probably not wise to throw something with this technique in the washer and dryer
Try this, if you have overlock machine set it up for roll hem lift up the knife, put hem down first lie your fishing line on top take care are edges and all in one pass
That was a great tutorial. And how would you finish off the ends of the curly hem? Do you leave a small tip of line sticking out to prevent the serge from unravelling?
I think I need some clarification, I'm not too sure if the needle goes past the edge of the fabric when sewing in the fishing line, or if the outside zigzag snags on a tiny amount of fabric that wraps it over automatically...
I've seen ready made blouses with wired edge collar. I have a Patchington coverup that has a thin silicone covered wire in collar for stand up. I can't find information on how to do this. Any suggestions?
Hi there, I wonder if this technique could be use, slowly, with a rolled hem foot. What do you think ? Looks very doable to me and like that, we could skip the raw edge.
ola, gostaria de saber quanto tempo você deixa o fio enrolado e se faze algo mais, porque fiz este mesmo procedimento na minha saia mas ele não ficou com curvas... ----------------------------------------------------------------------- hello, I wonder how long you let the coiled wire and do something else, because I did the same procedure on my skirt but he was not with curves ... Thank´s
Tatiane tatiane It's kind of like setting your hair with curls. You want to wrap it tightly and then warm the fishing line until it's totally warmed through. Don't unravel it until it's completely cool again
Can this method be used with a stretchy fabric like lycra? What would be your suggestion in regards to the presser foot and needle in that case? Thank you!
I haven't tried it and you might try it on a scrap. I think the biggest issue is the weight of the fabric. Granted, lycra isn't a heavy weight fabric but it's usually heavier than organza and the weight might prevent the fishing line from curling.
Jennifer Ferrari its a husqvarna lily 530. I don't think they make the machine anymore, because I bought it over 15 years ago but husqvarna makes great machines, although they can be a little pricey. I sometimes see used ones on craigslist so you never know where you can find a great deal. :)
So I am making me and my cousin sweet16 dresses and we want them to be high low I was wondering how that would work on it because I love the look of it and I want our dress to be like that could you possibly make a video on that or would that be to much I don't want to push you in to anything but I really need help please help me
orcamum I would imagine that wire could be use to pull off more elaborate designs. But because it's so pliable, I would sew it in flat and then shape after it's been sewn. So you can skip the prestep of curling. You'll also have to test to see if you'll actually be able to sew it through your machine without a special presser foot. fishing line is smaller than wire so you may have trouble with this part.
+Jerikoh O'Cru The tighter the curls when you set your fishing line, the more curly it'll be. Also, you might get better results using organza than chiffon. good luck!
I used the toilet paper roll and did as you said. My curls didn't come out very curly. My line was 50 lb. I don't know what happened/ what did I do wrong? I used organza circles for sleeves and collar
hmmm...if they were really curly when they came off the roll, then it's hard to say. You didn't press them after did you? because usually it's only heat that can take the curl out.

Wow!!!! You made it look so easy while other videos have made it look harder than it needs to be. I can’t wait to try
I use a rolled hem foot. works great. no trimming needed. nice, clean edge.
You are the best! Your tutorials are clear and extremely helpful. Thanks!
Very slow and detailed tutorial for a beginner. Super easy to follow along. Thank you!

Great video! How would one wash the garment without affecting the hem?
Hi,
Thanks for posting this - you make it look so easy! I seem to be losing the curls once I've sewn it into the fabric :-/ .. Any tips on how to fix this ?
Didn't know this. I'm sure the thickness of the fishing line would make the curves smaller or larger. Thank you.

you have the prettist hands thats all i could look at love the color of the nails too.
I assume it doesn't need a dot of glue to keep the ends of the fishing line secure. Great idea. Many thanks, love your videos.

How to cut churidar
Very nice, thank you.
What worries me about this type of work is the friction of the foot against the feed dog.
Perhaps soluble sewing paper?❤️
Wonderful dear.

Does the fishing line go through the washer and dryer ok? Does horse hair braid was and dry well?

no, the fishing line is only put on the fabric. I'm still just using all purpose thread in the machine
Good product for ur money saves u in making ur own leaders with it

nice tutorial! thanks! is there a way to have a tremendously curly hem? mine didn't get as curly as I wanted. I'm sewing with chiffon.
+Jerikoh O'Cru The tighter the curls when you set your fishing line, the more curly it'll be. Also, you might get better results using organza than chiffon. good luck!
Professor Pincushion thanks for your tip.I shall use organza next time.
you could use piping foot
You forgot to mention that you want monofilament fishing line, the cheapest one will do just fine. If you buy braided line it will be/ stay straight.
nice instructions!
but my attention goes more to your beautiful shape fingers and nails
Ikeda Elizabeth q
How about using a hair dryer to warm the fishing line? I would think that would be the easiest......
+pondsidegardens you can try and see if it sets the curl
I used the toilet paper roll and did as you said. My curls didn't come out very curly. My line was 50 lb. I don't know what happened/ what did I do wrong? I used organza circles for sleeves and collar
hmmm...if they were really curly when they came off the roll, then it's hard to say. You didn't press them after did you? because usually it's only heat that can take the curl out.
What happens if you don't cut it on the bias? Because I'm not going to have enough fabric if I cut a diagonal.
Katie Wiseman You can try it on a sample and see how you like it but the fabric won't have as much stretch and give.
Great video ! thanks
