I like his insights into the film process but I can tell by the commentary that he and Macey are more focused on theatre cues than film directing. They both seem like they'd rather live in the "moment" than worry about framing a shot. I still respect them both greatly.
Since there are few people who are asking, Mamet, Ricky Jay and William H.Macy are discussing the movie "House of Games" in a first part of conversation. I'd love to hear the entire discussion........
As far as I can tell, Homicide (1991) is the only movie Mamet and Roger Deakins worked on together and it does have William H Macy in it, so I'm guessing this is commentary from that film.
"I'm entitled to my own tastes" Mamet certainly talks with confidence, but his films for me have been lacking the bravado and innovation of his plays. I take issue with his notion of making it scientific and repeatable. Remove the art from art and you have ... hollywood. I do agree with the simplification in acting and directing. Every film is different. If the film is more Visual, then yes, the DP should have more of a say.
This seems like a treasure trove of useful information.

Gotta love Mamet's wisecracks on the "current-university-system"/"intellectuals"!
