- Professor Christophe Jaffrelot, one of the most respected scholars of India, says that all what has been seen at a national level in the last 10 years is a replication of his stint as the chief minister of Gujarat.
The polarisation of society, control of the police and the judiciary and the building up of a larger than life persona-all of this was visible in Gujarat first, he tells Sidharth Bhatia in a discussion.
Jaffrelot says de-institutionalising, that is taking direct control of independent institutions, is a hallmark of the Modi style of administration. Policemen who helped the administration in Gujarat were rewarded and some were even moved to Delhi, those who did their job professionally were sidelined, he says.
Much of it is in his latest book Gujarat Under Modi-Blueprint for India that has just been released. The book was done in 2013 but could not be published because of some legal issues and has been only slightly updated and released now.
Jaffrelot says the opposition parties finally realised the dangers and got together to fight Modi. They will have to keep the momentum going. “It is time now to revalorise the Constitution” he says.

My father once mentioned that removing the carpet under your feet without being noticed is to pull it thread by thread. That is what the Modi government has done to Indian society. Keep the people dumb by pumping nationalistic rhetoric. Keep them addicted to phones with cheap data. Provide employment as trolls. People are waking up now. Hope they are not too late.
Rahul really has to be given credit for bringing the constitution to the forefront of the minds of people and the younger generation.

This battle for an a independent court had begun when 4 judges of the SC had called for a press conference. The Gogoi factor is proof. It had happened then itself.
Absolutely correct observation. Retiring judges are saying that they are members of RSS in their retirement speeches.
If Judges can be subscribers of Communist ideology then it's okay, but it's not okay for Judges to subscribe to RSS' view point, right? All that matters, so long the Judge upholds the judicial integrity

@@FreddieMurphy746 There's a problem because there's a conflict of interest since government with their ideology is in power as well as RSS always had problem with the constitution of India. You can see that in the history and in their statements. So how can you expect a judge to protect a constitution of India which his ideology doesn't accept. Even many of their leaders have said that publicly many times. Also how big do you think communist party is? 😂
@@lonewolfe2502 Communist was big enough to form unions at campuses, mills, and workers. A judge's job is to interpret the Constitution. Anyway, the law makers who are currently in power have an rss background, and if they chose to add provisions to the current Constitution then they have the mandate to do so... If they think a few sections are outdated and need modifications, or upgrade to the changing times then they can do that by following the protocol. Why there should be any panic?

But unlike communist party, bjp has government in center who holds power to change constitution completely and make changes in law if they get insane majority. & that's what their people are also claiming before election.
This is going on since 30 years, there was a RSS judge in Mumbai high court in 1988

This was purely a polarization of the society, I have got so much to learn, you have highlighted various facts. I think this was the right time the opposition has got in to take care of the constitution.. God save our Country it took a long time to build with good institution, infrastructure ect.. from the hands of British. Now the young generation would love to see a better INDIA ❤
you cannot see clearly when you are so much involved with the system; to see clearly you need to step back a little. to find the forces working with the system, you need to see things out of focus. the more you go off the system, the system becomes clearer more and more.

Wow, a masterful book by Professor Christophe Jaffrelot and how wonderful to hear him give the political recipe of the Modi model, first refined in Gujarat and then amazingly scaled up to Northern and Western India.. The South and East are resisting in some sense similar to the independent media. When darkness finally falls in the next decade of Modi rule, it is likely that we will have to reinvent our freedom struggle and fight for the founding principles of the Modern Indian Republic. My sense is that splintering of the republic is the most likely consequence.

Recently retired judge Chitta Ranjan Dashsaid in his farewell speech said he'll go back to RSS.

RSS- A party having no vision can go upto any dirty level.
RSS should learn visions as jihad, jizya tax, maal-e-ganimat, dar-ul-islam, gazwa-e-hind from Quran and apply those visions to Musalman.

Painful final words that India has changed. Societies like Japan and South Korea that emerged with us after the second world war have become more mature, humane and generous as they developed to become wealthy and literate. We have instead become arrogant, brash and violent even though we remain far from the levels achieved by these cultures. On the other hand, in a mere 10 years we have mastered the toxicity that Pakistan took 70 years develop. Tragic indeed!
