Yep. I always urge folks to use non-ethanol if it’s available in their area. It’s pretty harsh on rubber bits, and when the alcohol evaporates, you have water left over. Thanks for watching.
Great video! If I might make a suggestion on these Briggs plastic carbs concerning the auto choke. I like to take the plastic piece coming from the choke linkage off with a small screwdriver so you don't have to fiddle with the Z bend. You just snap it back in place on the stud on reassembly. Give it a try. Thanks, again.
My toro recycler is only a year old. One mowing season. It was running rough then stopped and won't even try to start. I use ethanol free gas and it has new oil in it. Checked the air filter and it was really clogged up, so I cleaned that. I've never had a mower quit after 1 year. It's under warranty but the mower dealer I bought it from closed up. I guess I could check the carb...just doesn't seem it would do this after one season? Thanks for your video.
Sorry to hear that. Definitely drain out all the fuel from the tank and the carb bowl. Set the mower in the sunlight to dry out completely. Even using ethanol-free fuel can develop condensation over the winter if the tank is not topped off. I appreciate you watching. Cheers!
Thanks for your help love you no nonsense approach to your trouble shooting and I hear you mention the gas cap can cause a problem, Toro is giving me trouble I clean the carburetor and still having problems getting it started and notice there’s and ring around the cap that has come dislocated could that be causing the problem Thanks for the help Mat
If it's hard starting, but runs OK after it gets going, it's either the choke butterfly (if equipped- should be completely closed when cold) or the primer bulb (if equipped is not getting enough fuel to prime it for easy starting. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
I always use non ethanol gas in all my small engines and recommend my customers use it also if they want to avoid the moister problems from ethanol gasoline. I always enjoy watching your videos. I'm hoping more will watch.
Thanks for sharing Mr Steven! I've been telling my clients the same thing. I'm pretty sure this owner uses ethanol free. She didn't say how often she loans out her mower, but she did tell me she didn't give them ethanol free. After watching some other videos, I'm thinking some of that jello is residue of detergents they put in all grades of fuel, (at least here in the US) I really appreciate you watching. Cheers!
I wish cheap non ethanol fuel was readily available where I live. But unfortunately it's not, so there isn't much choice in the matter, unless you wanna pay $20 a gallon for tru-fuel, but I'm not wealthy enough to afford it.
@@Mr_Tecumseh You're correct non ethanol fuel is not available very readily in many areas there's only one gas station in my area that carries it in our population is around 200000 people.

Awesome video! I have the same annoying mower and have cleaned out the carb about 5+ times now, and it runs for a while sometimes getting the whole yard, sometimes not and then just stops running. Maybe the jet pack needs to be replaced, or the float and pin, which all looks pretty good, maybe the whole carburetor, any ideas? It looks pretty clean every time I clean it out too, I’m ready to trash this lawn mower, and it’s only a couple seasons old….like I want to blow it up with major amounts of C4…
Thanks for watching. There still might be some crud in those tiny holes. You can get a new fuel stack for about $12 or so. Does it restart OK? If not maybe an ignition coil breaking down?
@@TheLawnmowerLady yep, it starts and then dies…. And after cleaning it runs for a while then dies. I checked the fuel tank flow too seems good, thought it might be a clogged cap. Guess I’ll try a new stack next. Guaranteed to start, but not keep running, grrr…
I have a toro with the plastic carb. Mowing and stopped to change the cut height. Would not restart. pulled the air cleaner off and was full of gas. So got it up on the bench and pulled the carb. and this thing has a plastic needle in it... and not sure how but it would not seat. cleaned everything and put it back together. Hi, I've just found your channel and I think you are absolutely great, I'm a gardener and I do all my own repairs on my equipment and other peoples equipment, I use aspen 2 in all my two stroke equipment all the time and aspen 4 in both my Honda mowers near the end of the season so I don't have a problem with ethanol. I don't like the "never change the oil, just top up" rubbish too and I'm not that keen on the plastic carbs. Wishing you a lovely new year and keep up the great work and the great videos.
My Toro 22 is different. Yesterday the engine was reving when I turned it on. After a couple minutes it sounded semi normal. Started cutting my grass and it died. My carburetor area was very dirty. Gas has been leaking from where I put gas in if I fill it more than 1/2 way. No sure what the problem is? It's taken apart right now. Going to work on it today. Great video!
@TheLawnmowerLady Thank ls so much! I fixed it I think? I cannot get the spark plug off though? I know it needs a new one it still hesitates and the engine reves for a minute when I start it. I don't know what socket I need to take it off?
A big, big thank you. Followed your video, did what you made easy work of. I could carry you on my shoulders and run around the block singing your praises. Hope your days beautiful like a unicorn fartin rainbows.
Great video as always. From what I’m seeing of the plastic carburetors, they are much easier to troubleshoot. It’s like any other new concept.just a matter of becoming familiar with it. Please keep the videos coming
What kind of tension or play should the metal auto-choke arm linkage have? On mine, it's pretty sticky (?) or caught. It has full motion but it's definitely not smooth like when I pull on the throttle linkage. Should it be similar to the throttle arm? The plastic part it connects to also seems to barely clear the spring, it's just about to graze it- surely that's not right.
Thanks for the info. Very informative. I have a question for checking and oil level. Should we check the oil level when the engine is hot or cold.? Should the level in the full position?
I honestly think with this small of an engine, it really won't make a difference between hot/cold. What does make a difference is un-level ground, and you should give it about 3-5 minutes after stopping the mower for the oil that has splashed up in the crankcase to settle back into the oil sump. Thanks for watching. Cheers!

Thanks for watching Mr Ralph! I think the no oil change thing is just another example of planned obsolescence, a factor of our throw away society. Best wishes for a warn and Happy Holiday to you. Cheers! 🎄🎉🍻
Hello and thank you for your instructional video. I'm a woman that fixes her own lawn mower too. Question: do you have a video that shows how to test and adjust the rpm?
Thanks! I use an inordinately pricey tachometer purchased for a different purpose. There are several less expensive ones out there. Generally speaking, increasing the spring tension on the governor return arm will increase the RPM on any of these small engines. I do show that in many videos, but The only video I have with that as the main subject is: ruclips.net/video/s1eiIAJC_jo/видео.html There are links in the description of several tachometers. Cheers!
Please verify that you can shoot carb clean or air completely through the fuel line insert, that comes out of a golden tiny hole. This is where my mower was plugged. Had to take it apart twice. Thanks for your help. And if you’re doing this make sure the bowl fills back up with fuel after you reconnect fuel line
@@TheLawnmowerLady You helped a lot! I ended up replacing the entire carburetor... the fact they are like $18 and the Float Needle Valve is like $16, I guess it was easier for me to do that. 😆 Thank you so much for the video!
Lawn mower lady how do I raise the idle on a tank mounted carb? Do I readjust the air gap of the coil? Or how do I make the throttle spring tighter to raise the idle on this Briggs and Stratton eng?
ruclips.net/video/s1eiIAJC_jo/видео.html Although this video is 9n a Briggs Quantum engine, the principle is the same, there will be a tab or bracket where the governor return spring attaches. Increase the tension on that spring, by bending the bracket will increase RPM. Thanks for watching.

Air leak! I'm assuming you put on an aftermarket carb? They are hit and miss (as you might have discovered) I'd be cleaning and re-building the original carb.
The follow up texts are gold! About a month ago I serviced a snowblower for a co worker and he used after a huge storm and called me cursing and swearing that the machine just died like it wasn't getting fuel. I tossed one of my blowers on the trailer just in case he hadn't finished his driveway and went over to have a look. He had run it dry of fuel 🤦
Hey do you know if you can safely run a shot or fuel stabilizer through a lawn mower? I have a Honda motorcycle with 4 carborators?/ I believe, and a mechanic told me instead of paying to have those hard to reach places cleaned - add a shot of stabilizer to the gas tank and run it empty before winter. Then at winter, fill up the gas tank and add another shot of stabilizer at the top. Oil change is easy on the mower, but I’m not so confident on cleaning the carborator. Do you know if some fuel stabilizer could do the same thing? It’s gasoline and 4 cycle etc.
Fuel stabilizer helps. but eventually some gunk will end up in there. Not that difficult to clean. These plastic carbs are very simple and easy to service. I appreciate you watching. Cheers!
@@TheLawnmowerLady thanks :) Yeah I’ll watch it a couple more times and try it. The oil change alone does wonders, but that’s definitely the next thing it needs. I had to mow a lawn without the air filter because it wouldn’t run with it, so I’m sure it needs a cleaning - or just new pieces if they come in plastic now. Great videos
Have an exact same model that has the same issue, cleaned carb twice, made sure no water in fuel system, checked spark plug and cleaned, adjusted ignition coil gap, but still starts and dies. Couldn't think of other issue. Any input would be appreciated
@@TheLawnmowerLady found the issue - was the carburetor. Replaced it with a spare one fired right up. Gonna cleaned the old carb again and will try to locate where exactly is clogged. Thanks again
I only had one of these newer style Toros with the 163cc engine and it had roughly 3x more oil in it than it should have. So I had to dump out 2/3's of it and than start it and let it burn off all the excess smoke for about 10 minutes. After that it was fine. I love when people add too much oil thinking it's a good thing.
Thanks for watching Mr T! I figure it’s the one thing folks feel like is in their skill set, I mean how hard can it be to crack the cap on a bottle of oil? No tools required 🤷🏼♀️
Please help I have a Toro 7.25 163CC.. Mower wouldn’t start, so I cleaned the carburetor, changed the spark plug and air filter and only starts and then dies. What can it be?
Did you completely disassemble the white plastic fuel stack in the carb? Those are notorious for the slightest bit of grit clogging up the system. Also check for good fuel flow through the carb. Maybe a partially collapsed fuel line?
Hi, I found this video because the spring on top of the carb was disconnected and I did not know where to attach it. The video was so good that I went ahead and took everything apart, cleaned it, and reassembled it like you showed. I did not find any problems. The original problem is that the mower quit and I could not pull the cord. I disconnected the spark plug for safety and had a very hard time turning the blade with my hand. I went as far as to pull the plug, drop a little motor oil into the plug hole and was able to get the blade to turn by hand. I replaced the spark plug but still, the mower will not even try to start. Any ideas?
Nice video Stella, and your one of the few that doesn't bad mouth Briggs plastic carbs. I happen to like them ,but as you pointed out about not over tightening the hardware. Merry Christmas Stella and Happy New Year! 🌲👍🇺🇸Roger
I tried this fix on our neighbors Toro 22" Recycler, but it didn't work. It still starts then dies. Not sure what else to try; it runs fine if I spray carb cleaner into the carburetor so it seems like it must be a fuel delivery problem. Plenty of gas is getting through the fuel line to the carb. There was some debris in the gas when I drained the tank. Using fresh ethanol free gas did not help. It does have spark. Any other ideas about what to check? Should I try a fuel filter in the fuel line (a filter made for gravity feed engines), and re-clean the carb?
If there was debris in your fuel tank, probably carburetor clean best. I'd avoid carb spray, it's very harsh on plastic and rubber bits. Brake cleaner is much more forgiving. Did you completely disassemble the plastic fuel stack? Double check your carb bowl went back on the in the correct orientation.
@@TheLawnmowerLady The first carb clean went well, and I cleaned it again this morning. I cleaned the gas tank out this morning; maybe there was something that made it to the carb after the first cleaning that was dislodged during the 2nd carb cleaning? The good news is it is running now. There was a gasket missing from the fuel cap, which is now replaced, so hopefully there won't be debris getting into the gas tank now.
If this is the Toro with the plastic carburetor, make sure linkage and spring on top are not jammed up. You might have to remove the airbox to check. Hope this helps.
The Choke Return Linkage seems to be flimsy, I’m not sure if that is normal or not. Still same problem occurs of High RPMs even after adjusting the RPM spring,
I bought a all wheel drive toro last year. Low hours blown engine. 163cc. The throttle plate came out of shaft they kept running it till it destroyed it self. (Rod) couldn't find same engine so put a quantum on it.
I’d be interested to know if the owner ever used fuel stabilizer in this machine. I watch another channel (Taryl Fixes All) and he did an experiment last year with different brands of fuel stabilizer. He found that with the exception of one or two, all of these stabilizers formed a gel residue, when they were used with ethanol gas….???
I watched that entire series, not too surprised most of the elixirs came back with jello in the bowls. I'm somewhat in the camp of thought that fuel detergents in all fuel (at least here in US- not too sure about Ireland) contribute to the jellied mess after long enough time, and the ethanol just makes it worse. AFIK, Suzy only uses ethanol-free fuel, and my best WAG is likely the combination of loaning out her mower, the small amount of jello and water was just enough to stall the machine. I really appreciate you watching my channel Ms Inisfad. I hope you have a very Happy and Warm Holiday. Cheers! 🎄🎉
I have a question. I have this exact mower. It works great until the bag is full. I stop it empty the bag, and it won't start again. If I wait 10 mins, it'll kick back on, no problem. Could it be the muffler arm, it's the only thing I haven't really checked. Any other ideas?
You can check the muffler arm keeps the choke flap open when it’s hot, and closed when it’s cooled down, though I would think it would have issues running if it was not working correctly. It could be a failing ignition coil? About the only way to test that theory is to replace it. A pricy gamble.
Thanks, very helpful. On my plastic carburetor a small nozzle was clogged over the winter, now it runs again. Where is this supposed to lead, my carburetor is 97% plastic including the choke flap. Even the float needle is made of 100% plastic. So grandma's lawn mower from the 1970s was not design award-winning, but had much better quality.
@@TheLawnmowerLady Lawnmowers are still simple, since I live in northern Norway we unfortunately also have to use snow blowers. The mechanics are simple, but combined with cheap technology and poor quality from China, the snow blowers are the last crap. Unfortunately, a good snow blower is very expensive and still vulnerable.
I have cleaned the carburetor backwards and forwards even soaked it... Change the oil at a new fuel. New spark plug.. still won't start... What am I doing wrong.

Thanks Mr Dave! I'll give that a try next time I get one of these on my lift. Cheers!
Awesome video Stella, very thorough and well explained. Keep up the great work. Yes we are still here, you can't get rid of that fast!!
Thank you so much Mr JJ! Glad you enjoyed it. Cheers!
Thank you. I just took the bowl off let the gas drain and seen slime. Assembled and it works
glad you got it going Cheers!
Cheers!
@@TheLawnmowerLady Thanks for your advice. I'll give it a shot.
Thanks for your help love you no nonsense approach to your trouble shooting and I hear you mention the gas cap can cause a problem, Toro is giving me trouble I clean the carburetor and still having problems getting it started and notice there’s and ring around the cap that has come dislocated could that be causing the problem
Thanks for the help Mat
If it's hard starting, but runs OK after it gets going, it's either the choke butterfly (if equipped- should be completely closed when cold) or the primer bulb (if equipped is not getting enough fuel to prime it for easy starting. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
Perfect instructional video.
Thank you for taking the time.
I appreciate you watching. Cheers!
@@Mr_Tecumseh yep, it’s around $1 more per gallon around here. Never made any sense to me, more expensive for less processing and fewer additives.
@@Mr_Tecumseh You're correct non ethanol fuel is not available very readily in many areas there's only one gas station in my area that carries it in our population is around 200000 people.

Good job,
I have seen some of those Briggs where the needle is plastic with a rubber tip. And the tip comes off easy.
Not fond of those myself Mr Fields. Thanks for watching !
Your videos are great...easy to see and understand what you're doing!!
Happy to hear that!

Will check rpm seems to be running a little slow. 22 in and I could not figure out how to adjust the rpm, you helped me with that too...THANKS....did see the carbs for sale on ebay for less than $20. Seems high for $2 worth of plastic LOL
I agree about the cost, but to be fair, that plastic carb is very simple, with very little to go wrong. Thanks for watching.

Thank you so much for watching Mr Nicola! Happy new year to you too! Cheers! 🎊🥂😊
Great job. This happened to me today. I didnt even do half your steps and it started. Thx again
Great to hear!
I hope you figured out the problem. Cheers!
@TheLawnmowerLady Thank ls so much! I fixed it I think? I cannot get the spark plug off though? I know it needs a new one it still hesitates and the engine reves for a minute when I start it. I don't know what socket I need to take it off?
Thanks for the great video. Very clear and easy to follow.
GREAT Video, Now I am going to tackle my project with confidence. Thanks. Would you know the part # to the air filter cover? Mine cracked
I do not offhand. Use the parts lookup on any major parts house: partstree, jackssmallengines, etc. to get the right part no.
A big, big thank you. Followed your video, did what you made easy work of. I could carry you on my shoulders and run around the block singing your praises. Hope your days beautiful like a unicorn fartin rainbows.
LOL, that's an image that will stick in my head all day. Glad it helped. Cheers!
Great video as always.
From what I’m seeing of the plastic carburetors, they are much easier to troubleshoot.
It’s like any other new concept.just a matter of becoming familiar with it.
Please keep the videos coming
Thank you Mr George! Cheers!
I have this same mower. How can I add a push start like this one has? Thax
I think that will be complicated, as it requires a different flywheel. It has to mesh with a starter gear, and house a battery somehow.
Definitely hard to diagnose over the internet, but yes, both should move freely.
Cheers!
@@TheLawnmowerLady Thanks for the update. I have a same 163 cc Toro Lawn mower which has the same problem (i.e. starts at full power. After about a minute, the engine starts slowing down. Then after just another 2-3 minutes, it stalls). I have replaced the main valve and then follow with a brand new carb. However, I still have the same problem. Any idea or advise? Thanks.
@@benp7164 if it happens with a replacement car, I'd look towards a fuel flow issue. Either a collapsed fuel line, or a clogged fuel filter. There is a fine mesh filter inside these tanks, there just might be an accumulation of dirt and debris good luck

G-day Mr Jon! I appreciate you watching. Cheers!
Great video Stella I don't agree with the no change oil I change oil in all my Machinery every year sometimes twice a year I am 51 years old now but I have been working on lawn mower since I was 12 years old the good thing is with your videos you're always learning something new Merry Christmas to you from Ralph's small engine repair
Thanks for watching Mr Ralph! I think the no oil change thing is just another example of planned obsolescence, a factor of our throw away society. Best wishes for a warn and Happy Holiday to you. Cheers! 🎄🎉🍻
Great presentation! Boy, I wish you lived nearby! 😘
I appreciate you watching. Cheers!
I would only use air, carb spray is brutal on rubber and plastic bits.
This looks super promising. Will work on it in a few hours. 😊
Hope it helps. Cheers!

Haha Mr Pat! I hope your customer had the same sense of humour when the real problem was revealed. Cheers!
@@TheLawnmowerLady he sure did have a sense of humor about it, he is a super nice guy
I have same carburetor system.
Old carb and bought new carb, they both after 15 - 30 minutes of using, starts to fuel running out out carb.
Any ideas?
Bad needle/seat. Many aftermarket carburetors are cheap, and inexpensive and often fail. That's why I prefer to repair, rather then replace.
Cheers!
@@TheLawnmowerLady thanks :)
Yeah I’ll watch it a couple more times and try it.
I've seen the tiniest bit of debris clog up that fuel cartridge. You can try replacing just the fuel stack: amzn.to/3LF3m9x
Always learning Mrs Lawnmower Lady thank you. Best Wishes for Christmas and the New Year.

Any ideas?
Did you check the level of the oil? I don't want to assume it's seized, but that is a possibility. Maybe a bent crankshaft? Thanks for watching.
Nice work Stelllllaaaaaaaa
Thank you kindly Mr Bruce! Hope you and Mrs P have Happy and Warm Holidays, Cheers! 🎄🎉
Nice video Stella, and your one of the few that doesn't bad mouth Briggs plastic carbs. I happen to like them ,but as you pointed out about not over tightening the hardware. Merry Christmas Stella and Happy New Year! 🌲👍🇺🇸Roger
You too Mr Roger ! 🎉🎄🍻
I have a toro that’s very hard to start. I was told it’s probably the choke.
Do you have any tips for my situation ? Thank you !
Hard to start might be several things: bad gas, dirty air filter, fouled spark plug? Start with the basics. Thanks for watching.
Just followed your instructions, it starts now! But the RPMs are high when I start it, what could be the problem? Thanks
If this is the Toro with the plastic carburetor, make sure linkage and spring on top are not jammed up. You might have to remove the airbox to check. Hope this helps.
@@TheLawnmowerLady got you, I will check now!
The Choke Return Linkage seems to be flimsy, I’m not sure if that is normal or not. Still same problem occurs of High RPMs even after adjusting the RPM spring,
@@Pela_Vacas Is it fouling with the breather tube? If this model has a choke flap rather than the primer bulb, that's also a point of contact/fouling.
I bought a all wheel drive toro last year. Low hours blown engine. 163cc. The throttle plate came out of shaft they kept running it till it destroyed it self. (Rod) couldn't find same engine so put a quantum on it.
That Quantum is a far superior engine IMO. Thanks for watching.
Good job Hun.. I'm not a fan of this carb and what I do is change the carb out after the first clean..
I think a lot of folks feel the same way. They are so cheap. Cheers!
@@TheLawnmowerLady Thank you!

So true Mr Claus! And I often do break them. 😂

Thanks, very helpful. On my plastic carburetor a small nozzle was clogged over the winter, now it runs again.
Where is this supposed to lead, my carburetor is 97% plastic including the choke flap. Even the float needle is made of 100% plastic.
