On 8/18/24, this video saved me a ton of money. The fix took 5 minutes and the part was $14 on Amazon. I’m guessing the pool company would have told me I need a new pump.
Great video :) I’m a first time pool owner and this video was very easy to follow and do the work myself. I’m sure it saved me a good amount of money. Cost me $40 at Leslies. We have a freeze coming in tonight so this was perfect timing to see this video.
@@truelightpoolsllc4441 Welp. I replaced the capacitor but unfortunately no improvement. Still just makes the humming sound. Eventually shuts off probably after over heating. Any other thoughts on what it could be ? Thanks!
Oh my gosh I should have googled for this video before I went and spent $347 on a new pump. It was humming so I just assumed the motor was bad. But now I'm going to buy a capacitor and I guess maybe I will have a spare for next time. In about 15 years or less :-) thanks for the video it is very helpful I should have just googled this problem before I took that expensive step.
thats what i thought, but i bought new capacitor and motor. still hums, not start up,??? i stopped it last night after been using it for weeks, last few days, would huim only with old cap, then next time , start up??? then next time ,hum only, then next time start up??? 10yr old motor though
Done and fixed!!! Thank you!!!! You deserve more views and more likes!! I was very close to buying a new motor! Which i know it’s what a service would have ended recommending, or charging me 200 for the work. 56 dollar fix!
Hi Rich! Thank you so much for your video. You included several great details, and when I had a few questions for my situation, like how to remove it (quick tug) and what #s on the label were important when ordering a new capacitor, it felt like you were the Dad over my shoulder. I hope to learn more from your other videos as I need them ( or hopefully don't need them? 🙂) P.S. And your in Texas, my dad was an Aggie!
@@truelightpoolsllc4441 I did it! I did exactly as you said (turned off the breaker in the garage and the box) and it *was* the capacitor! I was so thrilled when i turned it back on and the pump started again ! Thank you so much for this tutorial and for your encouraging words
I tried to take out that cover to the capacitor tonight after removing the 2 screws and it would not budge by hand. Should I just tap it out with a rubber mallet or is there a latch somewhere?
Possibly, I don't know what pump you have, so test as the video shows and see if it works. Make sure motor shaft spins freely, if it's hard to spin, even new capacitors won't spin the motor and you still get the humming.
Not sure, make sure voltage is correct and wiring is correct on how it should be wired on your system. Otherwise may want to replace motor under warranty.
Lately my pump is buzzing for about 10-15 seconds then starts. This morning it kept buzzing and eventually stopped. I noticed the motor is very hot and the stickers are melting on the outside. I turned the unit off for a few minutes and plugged it back in. More buzzing so I bagged it a little and it started running again. Capacitor issue? When it runs it is quiet and very strong. Thanks
I am going to try this tomorrow after a pool tech came out and said I need a new pump for $2000. My current capacitor has 3 connectors going in it RED, BLUE, GREEN. I will buy another brand capacitor cos in Australia it's hard to find the same one. Do the 3 connector needs to plug into any specific slots on the new capacitor? Or can they go anywhere? Thanks heaps dude, much love from Australia
Hook it up like the old capacitor. Basically you have 2 halves of the capacitor. If 2 wires go to one side or half and 1 wire to the other half, then just make sure you do it that way. Which posts on that half does not matter.
I changed the capacitor but still humming. I quickly turn with a screwdriver and the pump starts and runs fine. Once it turns off and the trimmer kicks it back on, humming again. I put the pump in July 2022. Any ideas why?
Maybe there is some corrosion or stiffness in the shaft as it spins. See if you can easily spin the motor shaft with your fingers. Or does it spin most of the way around, but then stick and become hard to spin? That's what I've seen when the capacitor is still good but motor just hums and won't start. If no problem with shaft spinning freely, then something else is going wrong with the motor then.
My motor would intermittently not start and just hum, the shaft span fine when turned by hand, the 30 micro-farad capacitor measured OK, I swapped it for another 30 mf out of a working pump, problem still the same. I did a calculation of what value the capacitor should be and it was different. 1,000W rated x 80 efficiency rated, x 1,000 divided by 240V x 240V x 50Hz Western Australia = 20.7 Micro-Farads. So I bought a new 20 micro-farad capacitor AU$16 and pump is now working with no failures.
Wow, outstanding! Thanks for the explanation, I hadn't seen a motor coming with the wrong size capacitor and needing to downsize it. But good job figuring that out.
@@truelightpoolsllc4441 I did a 6 week course on electric motors as part of my apprenticeship when I was seventeen. 46 years ago. It's amazing what you can recall from teenage years, but can't recall what I had for dinner 2 days ago.
@@etmeyutub If the capacitor is good, you can spin the motor shaft freely and you have correct voltage to the pump but it's still not starting, then something has gone wrong with the electrical windings in the motor and it has to be replaced. Replacing the capacitor will fix it in many cases, but not in this case.
That message is related to the pressure switch on the heater. Make sure that the flow through the heater and flow through the pool system is good. No obstructions and the filter is clean, skimmers empty, pump basket empty, pump impeller is clean, etc. If those are good and you have strong flow through the pool and heater then you may need to replace the pressure switch. Look online to see where it's located on your model of heater.

Yes you can tap with rubber mallet to break loose. Then remove capacitor from cover with a screwdriver.

If you mean discharge the capacitor, then once removed from motor, ground a screwdriver across the top.

My pump doesn't look like that one so I'm assuming the capacitor is on the side. Is it a smaller one?

I just got a new motor and it was running fine yesterday before this happened. Is there a reason why this would happen to a brand new pump motor?

What’s that battery called ?
I talk about a capacitor in the video.
I just tried it and it still makes the same noise. Any thoughts? Or should ai just buy a new motor?
If the capacitor is good, then it's probably new motor time.
I have an Intex sand filter and it has the same problem. How can I fix it?
See if it has a capacitor, but sometimes those little pumps are just throw away and buy a new one.
My motor would intermittently not start and just hum, the shaft span fine when turned by hand, the 30 micro-farad capacitor measured OK, I swapped it for another 30 mf out of a working pump, problem still the same. If the motor shaft does not spin freely then you will have to probably replace the motor due to corrosion around motor shaft.
