    I was waiting for this review. I do plan to use Pimsluer for Chinese. I used Pimsluer 5 levels for French, and I can say its pretty much exactly similar stuff to what you said for Chinese.

    I have been using Rosetta Stone for Russian for about 10 months. I made it through Unit 12 and I noticed that my reading and writing (especially my reading) were very strong, but my listening and speaking had barely progressed at all. I watched your first video and signed up for Pimsleur.
    Honestly, I love it! I am an audio learner by nature so it helps me so much more than Rosetta Stone. I "know" almost all the words I am have used so far but it really helps hearing them and putting them into practice. I am also able to hear the grammar changes and stuff quickly. Something I never really got with Rosetta Stone.
    My opinion Pimsleur is sooooooo hard, yet sooooooo rewarding.
    Have a nice day ❤

    我叫Chris。 我住了大阪5年了。我在大阪学了中文。
    It’s interesting that you brought up Brazilian Portuguese. As part of a personal reset, I decided to start studying it 4 days ago and actually took a Zoom lesson. I am actually enjoying it thus far.
    Right before this video I was watching another one on the Speaking Brazilian Portuguese channel, and the host was talking with a Mandarin speaker about the difference between Mandarin loan words in Brazilian Portuguese and their original pronunciations in Mandarin.
    I like the examples you use of how you are engaged with languages while doing other chores. This is very relatable.

      Oh so fascinating---I didn't think about there being loan words between Mandarin and Brazilian Portuguese. Will need to look into that. Happy to hear about your zoom lesson! I'm guessing it went well. I also had my first zoom lesson in Portuguese this weekend, definitely felt the high after!

    • @chrisbunka

      If you like listening practice (English subtitles and Portuguese closed captions are provided), then you’ll be able to learn the Brazilian Portuguese version of Mandarin loan words. Great to hear that your Portuguese Zoom session also went well! Remember that you can use Portuguese in Macau.

    I gonna play devil's advocate here as I'm both doing pimsleur mandarin and supplementing it with sentence flashcards in anki. I feel like I'm already getting a lot of vocab and grammar from the flashcards that I would be very discouraged if I got 4-5 months into this and I wasn't being given harder or more niche material in pimsleur. Also, using ChatGPT to create anki sentences with the grammar/vocab you learn in that day's pimsleur lesson would greatly boost your learning. It's been working great for me.

    It’s still really cool how you can say stuff in Chinese! I can understand how it’s tricky using apps that have specific conversation outlines as it can definitely keep a person limited. Super cool how you’ve used language laddering to learn Chinese! You are doing amazing! Also excited for you to be going to the polyglot conference! Maybe you and Jess will see each other ☺️ keep going!

    I agree with your review. Pimsleur Chinese Mandarin Levels 1-3 were great but, Levels 4-5 compress too much random vocab into each lesson. Example in one of the lessons in Level 4: bamboo, gazebo, ancient city, traditional town, built, rebuilt, architecture, skyscraper, and more.

    I have the advantage of trying out Pimsleur Mandarin after learning to be somewhat literate in Japanese (read the equivalent of 50 light novels along side the audio/audio books). Not much benefit in the spoken portion, but the overlap in the written language is huge. Sadly, vanilla Pimsleur doesn't offer transcripts. Fortunately I did find a transcript for PMC I, and it turns out I can run the later units through an audio to text subtitle generator. Means that I'm able to make reliable Anki flashcards with these resources.
    The other advantage is that I've been editing the audio to remove all the prompts (English and later Chinese) and long pauses leaving a 10 minute file of just the (very comprehensible) Chinese for each lesson. That I've been playing on loop which has really helped my listening and pronunciation without the tedium using the full 30 minute lesson would have created.
    Both methods to supplement vanilla Pimsleur should work for any language. Just that with existing knowledge of Chinese characters, it made the Mandarin lessons very easy so far.

      This is a great use of the apps material! I've heard others do "trimsleur", or cutting out only necessary listening without English, but i haven't tried it. Thanks for sharing this insight with us, it will be helpful for many!

    • @NukeMarine
      @NukeMarine Месяц назад

      @@languagetraveladoptee Yeah, I was the one that coined the term "Trimsleur" back in 2019. Did for people that were learning Japanese but wanted to learn Kanji via RTK first, but still be able to learn and immerse in Japanese while doing it.
      They're annoying to make (takes about 5 to 10 minutes with Audacity), but they do change how beneficial Pimsleur can be. Supercharges the listening in my opinion. Hope others give it a shot and post their results.

      @@NukeMarine that's so awesome! I heard about it first from Seabolt speaks so that makes sense with Japanese. 🙏

    • @NukeMarine
      @NukeMarine Месяц назад +1

      @@languagetraveladoptee Oh yes. Seabolt interviewed me 3 years ago or so cause I was giving him Japanese learning advice and helping him with his Anki deck which I created/shared with him. Just search "nukemarine seabolt" to find the video easy. Around the 40 minute mark in that video is when I mention the Trimsleur method though leading up to that is where I talk about looping "comprehensible audio" which for beginners is audio from their lessons while they're building to where they can use native entertainment material.

    I know you you didn't learn a ton from pimsleur but with the knowledge that you did obtain; I would like to know how helpful it is in the street and how much can you understand now? And would it be beneficial for a person that--lets say works at an orchestra that has to give directions to a Chinese audience? And has to say things like, "Where is your ticket?" "The bathroom is upstairs" and "you can't enter yet" etc

    • @languagetraveladoptee
      @languagetraveladoptee  Месяц назад

      This definitely wouldn't be sufficient on its own for giving directions as you mentioned above. However, it hones your pronunciation and understanding of how the tones sound well enough for you to learn these commands outside of the program after you use it, if that makes sense

    I'm currently learning Mandarin as well and use the Mandarin Blueprint course. I LOVE their course and they teach you how to read and write, then speak. Being able to read and write Mandarin really helps with comprehension and speaking. I've only been studying lowkey for 10 months and know how to read and write characters over 300 characters (in the correct stroke order). If you're looking to try another resource, check them out and see what you think. Thus far I think that this is one of the best ways to learn Mandarin. But I that your overall goal for learning Mandarin and availability to learn will matter in determining if the course is well suited for you or not. 加油!

      I tried their 30 day challenge! It's excellent, I just started it when Mandarin wasn't my focus and lost touch. Will definitely return to it at some point. Thanks for the recommendation!
