I hate Chinese. China is bad. And harder than English. Idk could just be me but all my experience with Chinese people in Chinese speaking countries (Taiwan, Hongkong, Beijing) are all related to the word BAD. I couldn't ask if they have wifi but if someone Chinese did they would answer. I'm already Asian so I can memorize phrases I ask them phrases that I know sound fluent then they just act like they can't hear me. I've worked with many Chinese bosses and they just abuse you. They know you are replaceable so they will do their best to make you quit so they can get a new body. Sorry for my rant. I'm never learning Chinese it's giving me PTSD vibes.
I'm using this app while at work, then using Genki, and Remembering the kanji at home. That way I'm learning reading and writing at the same time and doing 2x the work
Great video! I appreciate the breakdown of the pros and cons. I'm visiting Japanese next year for two weeks and would love to learn as much of the language to be respectful of the people and culture. Thanks again for the review
I use Pimsleur for several languages. I agree. Pimsleur is effective for speaking. It definitely works. However, the main drawback is it is boring. I only do 5 or 10 minutes at a time. I would also note that Pimsleur users have good pronunciation. They don't have the awful american accent that comes from pronouncing words based on spelling.
Yes, Pimsleur is good. I do like the audio lessons. I don't like having really long lessons or having to leave a lesson unfinished. I do think Pimsleur is very effective in the long run though.
Good review--my thoughts on Pimsleur: I don't think Pimsleur is really paralleled by any other language resource when it comes to listening and speaking. It helps your accent, ability to comprehend real-time speech, helps with confidence in speaking, and really quizzes you to quickly come up with legitimate responses. There are quite a few drawbacks though. It is very expensive, the pace at which you learn new words and grammar is very slow, and you are essentially only learning phrases without hard grammar rules. Learning should include a balanced "diet" where you get information from many different sources that focus on one aspect (grammar, vocab, writing, speaking, listening, reading). Pimsleur is the best for listening and speaking so you should get the rest from other specialized sources.
My first focus would be to learn the language, then I’ll focus on reading and writing. I see it as how we learned our first language, by listening and repeating
It doesn’t necessarily work the same way on this. Knowing how to actually spell the words helps tremendously with your pronunciation in Japanese trust me. You could easily same something completly wrong going off audio alone for Japanese . By knowing how the words are spelled/ written you automatically know how to say it unlike other languages Easiest example for people is Tokyo. You might here it as Tokyo and say it that way which is incorrect. It’s “とうきょう“ which is toukyou. Said completly different . If an English speaker heard “Tokyo” without knowing that- more than likely it would be word. And “コ-ヒ-“ or “Tシアつ” Your can easily draw out the wrong syllables , making them shorter than they need to be, so on and so forth if you didn’t know how they are spelled because in Japanese - it’s all sounds. And within the word itself the “spelling” is actually the pronunciation. Much different than English
very informative! thank you. want to learn to speak Japanese because my main client Kramer has some friends and business associates who are Japanese. they like oranges
Thanks for your excellent review. Having just returned from visiting Japan (and wanting to return), I am seeking an audio approach so I can learn conversational language first. I am usually a Duolingo fan but got stuck on them forcing you to learn to read Japanese first. Thanks for making this video.
Great review of the Pimsleur Japanese language learning app. Eduardo likes Pimsleur's new Voice Coach and audio lessons. I want to improve my Japanese for business purposes. Great job TPI. Happy New Year!
Thanks for this review. I lived in Japan in the 90s and am looking for a good program. One of the weaknesses of this program, that you highlighted, was the lack of kana and kanji. Too much romaji is a crutch that puts people who want to be able to read and write at a disadvantage. Thank you!
First of all congrats for your excellent review! Im mexican obviously Im a native soanish speaker, I consider my english level intermediate. Im actually a Pimsleur user, learning japanese ( Im on the level 2) I m algo learning french and arabic ( my italki tutor is a native speaker of both languajes and she is helping me there); recently Ive started using Pimsleur with arabic. I have a question here, according to your knowledge / experience, it would be adviceable to use Pimsleur with the 3 languajes? I have the free time to do so, but, do you consider that if a have the 3 pimsleur lessons daily as adviced,my brain with actually absorb and learn all of the languajes? I must say I also have classes in italki platform with a fren and arabic soeaking tutor. What do you think?
Thank you. I was not aware that Pimsleur is romaji based throughout. I want to continue learning using kana and kanji so I should consider Rocket Japanese?
I have just started Pimsleur Japanese Level 4 and I have found the program incredible so far, I feel like I’m learning lots in preparation for my trip to Japan but I was wondering if maybe Pimsleur has any study groups or any type of community where people learning the same language can connect, share and review with others?
I don't know if i am a visual learner but with language learning it is more important to listen as in real life there is no pictures. I want to learn Japanese because I like asian culture and japan has all the anime. I try to learn through multiple apps but I keep forgetting and that makes it frustrating.
I do want to also point out that the japanese speakers over-pronounce the pitch accent of words which is huge for making you sound more like a native speaker it's much like tones in Chinese, but isn't covered almost at all by any apps.
Wr live in an area that learning anything besides French or Spanish in person... is never going to happen. As a parent, I want my kiddo and I to both be able to learn a language (Japanese) that we can really enjoy, and maybe give her a chance to travel confidently when she's old enough.
Yes, but the kana/kanji teachings are limited - I would say Pimsleur is more geared for conversation (speaking and listening), not reading and writing. Check out Rocket Japanese and Rosetta Stone for kana/kanji
Heyo! Thanks for the review. Pimsleur was one of my main options before I took the Rocket route. I'd still rather take Rocket Japanese, but Pimsleur is one one of the best out there from what I've seen from the your reviews. It is though a pretty expensive course compared to others. P.s. Happy new year!
@@emmad4tennis695 heyo, Pimsleur was/is subscription based. If I can't own it permanently then I won buy it. I bought lvl 1 of the language in Rocket, cost me $60. It's fantastic and if I want to upgrade later I have those options. The voice recognition and way the course is structured is very good and I have learned and retained a lot of knowledge. If you are a more audio focused learner I would highly recommend. But you really can't go wrong with rocket if you are serious about learning a language. It's one of the best at the moment
Not having to be glued to the phone is an enormous bonus. It feels like a new language app comes out every few months now, and it's making it hard to decide on one 😩 I want to learn Japanese to watch anime without subtitles
Oh I would start now. Honestly. The earlier, the better. It's not like an exam you can cram for right before you leave. It truly is a process and is about consistency day to day. So I would start now. Plus, starting early might give you the chance to finish two apps which would enhance your fluency level.

I want to learn Japanese because I have learned Chinese already. I really like the Asian languages more than any other languages in the world.
Very cool!

Great video! I appreciate the breakdown of the pros and cons.
I'm visiting Japanese next year for two weeks and would love to learn as much of the language to be respectful of the people and culture.
Thanks again for the review
Same, just booked our flights the other day. Any luck with how that's going or what you like learning with best?
Nice review. Years ago I learnt basic Portuguese with Pimsleur while commuting. Good to see that there's a lot of new features
They've made a lot of nice improvements over the years. Thanks for watching!

As opposed what other accents
Great review. I really like Pimsleur. It’s nice they added the voice feature.
Agreed!

No prob!
Richard Ross is right! Eduardo is stoked with this Pimsleur Japanese review!!
Okay good to know. Thank you for the info good sir
No problem 👍
Great review of the Pimsleur Japanese language learning app. Eduardo likes Pimsleur's new Voice Coach and audio lessons. I want to improve my Japanese for business purposes. Great job TPI. Happy New Year!
Thanks!
I want to learn Japanese one for hobby because I love anime and hope to visit Japan and have conversations with locals
Great reasons. Thanks for watching!

Yep. Good point. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the great review! It sounds like Pimsleur is a great choice!
Helpful video. Thanks for this
I moved to Japan 10 months ago, and I need to be independent. The only way to achieve that is to learn the language.
Sounds like a fun adventure. Good luck!
Thanks for taking the time with this review it helped me make a decision on Pimselur
Glad we could help! Thanks for watching
Thank you so much, John! Such a great review!!!

Great review 👍
I want to learn Japanese so I can have more enjoyable and meaningful conversations with my wife and her relatives without having to use a translator.
Very good reason to learn Japanese. Good luck!!

Glad to hear you like it. There's a few options to engage with a community of Japanese learners. I'd suggest reddit or Busuu to start. Good luck!
Thanks for this review!
No problem!

That is hard, you really need to commit as consistency is key. Good luck!

great Pimsleur Japanese Review 2023
Very helpful!
Incredible, great review!
Thanks for watching!
I found Pimsleur Japanese audio in the library.
Pimsleur is good too if you are done with lingodeer and rosetta stone. Right now I'm on jlpt n4 on lingodeer
Nice!!

That's awesome. Best of luck, and enjoy it :)
I want to learn Japanese before i want to travel there
Duolingo still doesn’t have voice recognition for Japanese
is it possible to do multiple 30 minute audio lessons in a single day or is there a limit?
No limit, you can do as many as you want
I want to learn japanese because we are going to japan in about a year To visit a friend and I wanna surprise her What's some conversational language.
that would be awesome. good luck!!
Looks great but do the lessons eventually remove romaji in favour of using kana/kanji?
Yes, but the kana/kanji teachings are limited - I would say Pimsleur is more geared for conversation (speaking and listening), not reading and writing. Check out Rocket Japanese and Rosetta Stone for kana/kanji

😂😂
LMAO

I know there are so many!!
Iam planning on a trip to Japan in 2025 and I will be 58 at the time and want to learn the language. Just one question when do you recommend I start

So would this be better for learng to speak I only want to speak Japanese.
Yes - listening and speaking is Pimsleur's focus. They're not as interested in reading/writing
By the title I thought you studied Japanese using Pimsleur but it’s just a manual of how it works…
Is it just me or is every word he ends with he “speeds” through it like I know my ears aren’t deceiving me I’m just curious if it’s just me 🤔…
Great Cadence though 👏🏽🫱🏽🫲🏾
Same I was so confused lol
Hi John, I want to learn Japanese so I can watch anime without subtitles haha
Sweet! I like that reason
It looks pretty sucky, no kanji
Hey! Little update ~ pimsleur lets you split the membership up to 4 people now 🎉 so basically only $5/month ❤
