  • How to replace a broken spoke on the back wheel of a Hybrid bike (bicycle) with disk brakes.
This video covers replacement of a broken spoke on the rear wheel of a hybrid bike, tools required, checking the length and diameter of the existing spokes to select the most suitable replacement. To check the spoke tension see other video on this channel.
Two of the main issues were the spoke location on the back wheel requiring removal of the recently installed sprocket set and the difficulty in threading the new spoke through the hub to the wheel rim.
How to overcome issues and guidance is provided in the video.
The incident happened while riding home when suddenly there was a sound of something like a twig had got lodged in the back wheel, but closer inspection revealed it was a broken spoke twanging inside the back wheel.
The broken spoke was made safe by twisting it around adjacent unbroken spokes then riding carefully home.
The issue was made more difficult because the spoke needed to be threaded outside in and not from the inside of the hub out. This meant bending the spoke so as to force it past the disk brake.
Note that I am not a bike mechanic, so all work is at owner's risk.

Quicker and easier than using a specialized tool. The idea is like tuning a piano or guitar.

No....that's not locked. You need at least 40Nm....I don't think it's safe to leave it so loose!!!

Good point. You are right. Afterwards I used a round spoke wrench and a Tubular Box Spanner as a tuning fork to hit the spoke to get the same sound /tension as the other spokes on the same side. Have added a separate video showing this was done. Thanks for your feedback 😀
