    I just fought for ten minutes with a tire, feeling so weak and demoralized, I needed to call in more hands just to get it done -- and then I watched this video and popped the other tire on with my bare hands. I cannot possibly thank you enough! This was fantastic!

    10 minutes! I just spent 1/2 a day and scratched my rim trying to get a new downhill tire on. Dave...thank you very much for posting this. Great video! Took me 2 minutes after watching this. I now have a big sign in my workshop. "Prior to changing tires watch Dave Kay, Yorkshire Bike Mechanic"

    Thank you Dave, this video has been unbelievably helpful. I was losing my mind yesterday and considering going to the local bike mech. This would have cost about £60 (I

    Thanks Dave, I'll never gonna ask for help when changing a tire w/INSERTS again. Now i understand... It's not about the tire levers that you use, in fact It's not about strength at all. It's about how much you know the materials and components with what you're working, understand how they're shaped, and how you can use that in your advantage. I must say your method didn't work for me, but i use your logic and that did worked, that's what matters. Thank you so much. Im subscribed to your channel and I'll be waiting for more of these great videos. Thank you.

    Thanks for reminding me of this technique that my mate showed me on the hoof in Morzine with some unruly Maxxis DH tyres. I thought that over the years I had the technique dialled until I tried fitting a new Michelin DH22 on a Stans Flow EX rim this afternoon with an inner tube inside. Almost had a John Cleese Fawlty Towers car moment after about 45 mins with bending tyre levers and still no go. I was determined not to revert to the motor bike tyre irons so I came here and refreshed my memory on the technique.
    At the moment it sits in the cellar mounted on the rim but without the inner tube inside in the hope that it will stretch a bit ready to let battle recommence tomorrow.
    As an aside don't leave the chuck key in the lathe, if you catch the start button the hard to mount tyres will be the last of your problems!
    No problem with the accent when you're from Sheffield! Cheers.

    • @TheYorkshireBikeMechanic
      @TheYorkshireBikeMechanic  3 года назад +1

      Hi John, Thanks for watching, The DH22 on a stans or carbon rim has got to be one of the most difficult tyres to get on the rim, unbelievable. I would hate to think that if anyone had to sort one out on a trail. We had had tyres on rims that won't unseat and seem welded to the rim, had to cut one of in the past to get it off the rim. Once you have mastered the technique on fitting tyres it's quite easy as you know. The chuck key was a bad mistake, well noticed. its normally in the draw, well spotted.
      Thanks Again
      Dave, YBM

    Dave, thank you SO MUCH!! I'm new to mountainbiking and wanted to swap upgrade from the Schwalbe tires the bike came with, to Maxxis. I somehow got to front one on yesterday with lots of luck and prayers, but the rear one was impossible... Like you said, I went to bed with crazy painful hands I've never experienced despite working in construction for years... If I managed to get the bead on on one side, it would pop off on the other side... Ended up spilling sealing fluid everywhere and what not, I was so frustrated! It was the exact same Minion DHF, except mine has the double down compound so maybe a little stiffer? Left the tire out in the sun all day, no luck. Watched your video, and I kid you not, I had this god damn tire on in LESS than 5 minutes without leaking one single drop of fluid... Wish I found this video yesterday, but hey at least I learnt something! Again, thank you SO MUCH, wish I could invite you to my bbq and have a beer with u 🤣 greetings from Belgium!

    Amazing tip of keeping the tension while pushing the bead to the center, I am about to put a really difficult DH tire in and will give it a try.

    Good work Dave love your down to Earth explanations.
    Inserts are another level of complexity if a person doesn't already understand how to use the diameter differentials between the bead hook on the rim and the deeper well where the spokes and nipples are. There is probably 2cm minimum difference in the diameter measured at the outer rim compared to measuring at the deepest part of the rim well. You should probably make it clear, if you do another tyre vid, that tyres should be removed by starting as close to the valve and replaced by ending at or as close to the valve stem as possible. It is the valve that stops the tyre beads from sitting as deep in the well of the rim as they can, thus preventing you from gaining some 'slack' so the tyre slips over the rim with just thumbs.
    It's scary how many cyclists don't know this or have never applied some critical thought or analysis into why the tyre is 'difficult'. Including a video by a so-called pro mechanic on a channel where the protagonist likes to "just ride bikes." Your vids that I've watched so far are top-notch so keep it up👍it's appreciated.
    I like Tacx tyre levers for emergencies (usually at sub-zero temps just before sunset...)
