- António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, addresses the General Debate of the 79th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (New York, 24 - 30 September 2024).
World leaders gather to engage in the annual high-level General Debate under the theme, "Unity and diversity for advancing peace, sustainable development, and human dignity, everywhere and for all." Heads of State and Government and ministers will explore solutions to intertwined global challenges to advance peace, security, and sustainable development.
The UN General Assembly (UNGA) is the main policy-making organ of the Organization. Comprising all Member States, it provides a unique forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the Charter of the United Nations. Each of the 193 Member States of the United Nations has an equal vote.

UN Secretary-General lacks both knowledge of world affairs as well as the respect from statesmen across the globe; as a result, the United Nations becomes a forum of empty talk ineffective in implementing any meaningful mission.

because so much World Terms of Peace and safety means only to save ones own back, and not help another in suffering at all. But this is a pathway to a bigger harm to happen.
As it is like ignoring a big dog until he bites. or a snowdrift until it falls upon yourself.
Gutierrez says all the stuff we want to hear. He is so good intentioned. But that's what pandering is. The reality is, he failed to prevent war because in his capacity he allowed ego and righteousness to take front seat. Let's look at the situation in Gaza for example. In his role, he had the opportunity to discuss with both sides, make some security and financial guarantees and work towards deescalation, real not just in words. In reality, days after the Oct 7 attack, on Oct 24th, he made an offensive speech that eliminated the Israeli government and since than, he specifically, was not able to reach Netanyahu and his people, as he said in a recent interview. Israel won't answer his calls since Oct 24th. His speech was significant because it showed Israel that the UN is dismissing their security concerns, that the UN will use this opportunity to defame Israel and pander to their haters and they cannot rely on anyone else but themselves. For the sake of Palestinian lives lost in Gaza. A true leader would've made an apology for the timing and wording of the Oct 24th speech, and resume good faith effort to discuss a diplomatic solution. Instead, Gutierrez been competing with Netanyahu on who has a bigger ego. No apology. Playing naive waiting for the other to beg. Only Netanyahu represents Israel and a people. Gutierrez is suppose to represent diplomacy in its most abstract way. What is he doing? What's the purpose of the pandering? The guy doesn't understand his role. Seem to think his role is to be a moral compass that tells other leaders what is the right thing to do. That is for the international courts. You have an administrative role to facilitate diplomacy and you're failing. I'm sorry. You look like a nice old man... it doesn't change the reality. Let me add, in his pandering capacity, he also lies, alarmingly frequently. It's possible he doesn't know how to use a computer, or he has speech writers that he doesn't challenge. But he said in many many ways and phrasing that the Gaza war is the worse catastrophe, worse death toll in recent history. It's not. He said, in his time in office, it is not. His rehitoric fuels hate and the continuation of the war. That's from a guy that claim to do ANY THING POSSIBLE to bring peace. That's not anything.

Those are very valid points. Double standards are frustrating as is political pandering, which UN speeches are full of. I think I understand the mindset of Guterres though:
1. He has a bias against the strong and for the weak. In one-sided conflicts, people with that bias hold the stronger power to stricter standards.
2. He sees the UN's role as one supporting human rights in conflicts between states, and so would consider some of the conflicts listed above, especially the Mexican drug war, as domestic and therefor less deserving of UN attention.
3. Facilitating diplomacy is a key responsibility, but so is taking a stance on suspected human rights abuses and violations of international law.
4. The relationship between the UN and Israel wasn't exactly great before Guterres. It's been 75 years, and Israel has still not honored its commitments for entry into the UN. So holding them specifically to account for their alleged violations of international law and human rights violations could seem especially urgent relative to other conflicts.
5. The current war in Gaza is one of the most major escalations since the conflict began in 1947, and every time this conflict has escalated there have been dire and lasting consequences. Israel's border expansions have repeatedly had major geopolitical ramifications, including birthing Hamas and Hezbollah and in large part sourcing the cold war with Iran.
I could see Guterres using the above points to justify his exagerations and the disproportionate focus on Gaza over conflicts with higher casualties. But who knows. Pandering and grand standing is annoying to me when anyone does it, even people with whom I agree with on a lot of points.
@courtlandmsmith I take issue with a few of your points, and I admit that there's layers of complexity, especially to a person's personality. Israel has not been in violation for 75 years. Mind you, 75 years ago, Palestinians were offered everything they today hope to achieve, and surely there was no expectation of immediately after being attacked from all fronts by 7 militaries, that Israel would immediately give everything back without ensuring its safety. Additionally, at that point until 1967 Palestinians were not occupied by Israel, but by Egypt and Jordan, if you call it occupation, they didn't. Your description of having to balance sticking to human rights rather then be practical is tough. Because on its face you're right, however, why should it be a binary question? You can empathize with the Palestinian people, demand peace, work for a just solution and at the same time stick to truth and avoid escalating rehitoric. Gutierrez has an obligation to solve this issue and save human lives. He can describe the situation in nuanced way trusting everyone to understand complex considerations. Also avoid the kind of exaggerated rehitoric that makes it harder to work together. For example, every single time he speaks about the conflict he mentions the unprecedented amount of casualties... only if you search it up, it's not unprecedented at all. Pretty average for a war. Not in recent history, not even today where around half a million Ukrainians and Russians died in a war, solider or otherwise.
For nothing. Gutierrez, and to his credit all the world representatives and media, never explain the circumstantial nature of this war.
It is true that occupation persisted this long. But if you examining specific decisions made throughout, they have a context, they might not always be nefarious.
For example, the decision to hold onto the Jordan Valley, was not initially relates to the Palestinians. Jordanians attacked Israel in 1948, 1967, 1973 and all throughout with snipers in Jerusalem and other hostilities. The natural barrier was of the Jordan River provided unmatched protection and the Jordanian threat lasted until 1994. That means that's between 1948 and 1994 Palestinians were devoted of their border with Jordan due to forigen threat, not local. Similar situations in the Golan Heights, overlooking all of Israel, was covered by Syrian mines making it unlivable and installed artillery and missile lunches that could hit the entire Northen Part of Israel and was uses that way in 3 separate wars.
Israel in the past took over all of Sinai all the way to the channel providing natural, geographic advantages in security. And yet, Israel returned it for a peace deal.
All of this is to say. If security can be gurenteed, peace will come and Israel compromises. But if the rehitoric focuses on unilateral obligations without considering security. Israel does not have a choice and diplomacy is dead in arrival.

In terms of What I speak about below in the issues of universal Race Equality. A I could not even translate these words all correctly, another reminder of how disconnected this currently is and could be misinterpreted.
Yet these words were told from a human humanitarian perspective and shared in "values of life" and also represent what was said in these words.
Remember that we as humans need to rely on human virtues first and be custodians of peace and prosperity.
It was refreshing to see the house was almost filled today as it should always be when open for these very reasons. This is Another Reminder that more are tuned in outside of this assembly and are wanting to be appart of these important discussions and want to be informed but can be discouraged to see not all are in attendance or are busy moving around and or distracted with side conversations.
As an assembly as important as this is currently, with respect, I implore those Privy to attend. Please do so "with us in mind," whom you all represent.
There is more attendance outside of those walls who are looking forward to a peaceful resolution and doing away with the " conflicts of interest " that do not surve humanity as a whole.

Our First Nations Representatives from domestic to all over the world who have continued to support these " values in humanity " as a whole and as many more, who value the insight of peace and support for those whom are currently oppressed, occupied and who are suffering the consequences of greed and corporate entities that have penatrated governments and political institutions globally.
No amount of money can serve wisely without using these said values first.
When us humans acknowledge when and when we witness oppression on any scale we all know it reflects on those incharge.
When your people prosper than we praise such values.
Perhaps, ask yourselves how many people are prosperous and much have you as leaders contributed towards these goals and great achievements in your office of power and gracious services to your people?
It all reflects on those whom are so-called in charge no matter the budget nore the dollars required.
Money and wealth is not the governing factors it is your examples of how you will survive your people well and turn your own countries into a place of refuge and home for your people to prosper and grow and thrive.
So again we await and implore you leaders to accomplish these values and we inturn want to learn how to help.
At this moment we all want these values to be attainable and we ask you all for us to be valued and be your priority in moving forward into a secure and prosperous future.
As was intended long before the "not so" almighty dollars were implemented.
That has never surved humanity as a whole but has consistently locked us into a barron obstacles of disparity.
