  • Keir Starmer, Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, addresses the General Debate of the 79th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (New York, 24 - 30 September 2024).
    World leaders gather to engage in the annual high-level General Debate under the theme, "Unity and diversity for advancing peace, sustainable development, and human dignity, everywhere and for all." Heads of State and Government and ministers will explore solutions to intertwined global challenges to advance peace, security, and sustainable development.
    The UN General Assembly (UNGA) is the main policy-making organ of the Organization. Comprising all Member States, it provides a unique forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the Charter of the United Nations. Each of the 193 Member States of the United Nations has an equal vote.

    It's incredibly disrespectful that when smaller (and even some larger) countries are addressing the assembly, hardly anyone is paying attention. People are on their phones, laptops, chatting, or otherwise distracted from the important issues being discussed. And then people wonder why the UN isn't as effective as it should be? The lack of discipline and respect is glaring. There should be rules in place, especially for an annual event of this importance. The UN seemed more effective when technology wasn't a distraction. We talk about keeping phones and devices out of classrooms, yet these highly educated diplomats can't even show basic respect. It's disappointing that the UN hasn't implemented any guidelines to address this. It’s time for them to get it together, listen to world leaders, and engage properly.

    As a Brit, I do not share the political views of the ruling Labour party nor do I agree with many of its domestic policies, but I am sincerely thankful for Prime Minister Starmer's representation of the UK at the United Nations General Assembly.

    • @edelgyn2699
      @edelgyn2699 Месяц назад

      Why? He's our PM - who else would be representing us? Starmer doesn't have the ability and charisma to represent us on the international stage, especially after his comments on thinking it was okay for the Israeli government to deny humanitarian aid to Gazans and the recent sausage gaff. He's not politically astute and he's something of a Mr. Potatohead... 😯

    • @Nathan-in-Cwmbran
      @Nathan-in-Cwmbran Месяц назад

      @rhirhi4172 - I understand why mention or ommission of specific policy elements may be displeasing, but the Prime Minister has at least set out some admirable principles for the UK to go by in its dealing with the other UN member states. As Brits, I hope those principles are something that we share and can expect to be actioned by our representatives going forward.

    • @Nathan-in-Cwmbran
      @Nathan-in-Cwmbran Месяц назад

      @rhirhi4172 There's an opportunity here at least for the UK representatives, including political representatives such as the Prime Minister, to act on those principles - a less demanding ask than to live by them.
      From the tone of some of the other addresses to this General Assembly, I think the other member nations will also have expectations for the UK to act meaningfully.

What gave me hope was seeing so many people vote for smaller parties and independents. We are moving slowly closer to democratic representation and the politicians may start to represent the views and concerns of ordinary people instead of bowing to the USA and powerful lobbies.

    Let’s imagine that in our community, families organize themselves to do their daily activities. Each family has its private space, but they also share responsibilities and help each other. This way of living together is based on coexistence and solidarity, which keeps the community united and strong. Now, let’s think about a beekeeper and their hives. The bees work together to make honey, and the beekeeper takes care of them. But what would happen if someone with bad intentions wanted to take advantage of the bees or destroy their hive to take the honey? This would be very bad for the bees and the beekeeper. Similarly, in our community, if someone with bad intentions tried to manipulate or destroy our way of living together for their own benefit, it would be harmful to everyone. Communities can organize themselves to create schools and educational programs that help everyone understand things better, use local technology, and work together to maintain their history and culture. But sometimes, these communities can be affected when the government does not support their values and practices, and instead, is swayed by the interests of outsiders or its own interests. This can happen because the government wants to benefit itself or because it is pressured to do so. When the community cannot sustain itself, it often receives promises from interveners with hidden interests who claim to be the heroes of community development. But, watch out! One way communities can avoid being taken advantage of is by organizing well, participating in local industries, and ensuring that everyone respects a fair agreement. Now, imagine these interveners are like those movie villains who try to trick everyone to get the treasure. If they manage to deceive the population and deny them a dignified participation in important decisions, then abuses and violations of the community’s dignity and integrity begin. It’s like the villains getting away with all the loot! But don’t worry, because with a well-organized and united community, those villains won’t stand a chance. Justice and solidarity always win in the end! These are the areas and boundaries we must honor not to destroy, but rather to facilitate the qualities that allow cohesion from the heart of the local community. We are talking about genuine private participation, which is essentially the local community. Something like this has been achieved in some countries in Latin America and Northern Europe. This effort should not be sabotaged by state interveners or global corporate interests. There is also the private sector, both national and transnational, global organizations that oversee legal development in international relations between countries, and global para-business organizations. At times, states do not fully reflect the will of their populations but are influenced by political ideologies, often speculative, about how to develop a country and distribute its wealth. This can lead to national interests not being based on the convergence and consensus of the nation, but rather the state submitting to the interests of influential global groups. However, it should be the opposite: the political vision for sustainable development worldwide should start from the success of the cohesion of local communities, whose will must be respected by their national governments. These governments have the responsibility to enhance that cohesion and extend it to other communities represented by the governments of other states in the region and the world. When this does not happen, we are facing a case of corruption. To achieve a cohesive world where individual rights are respected in a context of solidarity and empathy, the local state government acts as the manager of the convergence of the interests of the various sectors of its nation without betraying any, especially the most vulnerable, while also participating within these same terms in its regional context.

    I personally perceive Israel to be bereft any moral authority to negotiate. More so after ICJ has found Israel's Policies & practices in the occupied land are illegal!!!
    In any case you don't negotiate with one stole from you. May be hand over modalities only.
    Another issue cost of reconstruction and reparation will be settled when time is ripe.
    For now, winter has set in. We need states to step up effoerts for ceasefire
