My Top 10 for what Russia is famous for from the outside looking in:
    1. Beautiful culture (undeniable)
    2. Beautiful winters (yet challenging)
    3. Beautiful landscapes (mountains, plains, swamps, frigid zones, beaches on the Black Sea)
    4. Beautiful people (undeniable)
    5. Beautiful language (one of the most spoken in the world along with Mandarin, English, Spanish, French, Hindi, Arabic, Bengali)
    6. Top-notch architecture (undeniable)
    7. Ancient history (goes back to the 9th century or so along with Eastern Orthodoxy)
    8. Huge country (from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok, Murmansk to Vladikavkaz, and Novosibirsk to Kamchatka)
    9. Excellent food (all Slavic food is great, from Poland to Serbia and Slovenia to Russia)
    10. Ballet & Books (Bolshoi to Tolstoy and Dostoevsky)
Only someone filled with hate could deny these things. I have studied about the Soviets and Russia all my life. Politics aside, all I have ever seen is a unbelievably interesting place and culture. I have never been to Russia (it is at the top of the list with a few other places). I have been close to Russia. It was in the plans to get to Russia before Covid hit. Hopefully sooner than later. God willing. Great job, Sam.

@@MK-lm6hb Duly noted. I understand the difference as best I can. I just didn't take time to go that deep. This could be stated about any ancient culture, though. Modern English, Russian, Chinese, Persian, Indian, Japanese, Korean, Ethiopian, Jewish, Egyptian, Greek, Iraqi, Syrian, Inca, and Mayan, etc. cultures are vastly different from their ancestors, but the cultural traits, complexes, systems, and transmission -- artifacts, sociofacts, mentifacts -- of those ancestors can still be found today in those societies. At least in part. The homogenization of many ancient cultures of the past has been diluted due to global trade that started in the Age of Exploration up to today's high-tech and highly connected world. I would make similar compliments about the UK. If Sam made videos there, too, I would compliment him on them. He is respectful and does a good job showing local culture.

No, Kievan Rus, Novgorod and Moscow are not "one prolonged culture". Just look at map, at time. These are different states, with completely different political culture in different time. Moscow was even at the beggining more Tartar, Mongolian and Ugrofinnic than Slavic. So Moscow needs now to justify its "tradition" by huge lie that it has "1000 years of tradition from Kiev".
Kievan Rus can't be precedessor of Moscow just because Moscow had occupied it for a few years. It was independent. And later that it stood part of Polish-Lithuanian Union for centuries - more than under Russian occupation.

I understand the big picture often, but that doesn't tell the whole story. My comments were meant to encourage Sam and to share that I think Russian culture has a lot of beauty. To me, all folk cultures have a beauty about them. I grew up in a warmer climate, so cooler climate cultures have always intrigued me. Conversely, pop culture is very different. It's about making money and status only. It's of low value to overall quality of life. It constantly changes, and is meant to be cheaply consumed. I get all of it I can stand on a daily basis. This is why I enjoy learning about folk cultures. Finally, I place politics aside because discussing it on this platform isn't wise. I can't see you and look you in the eyes. Perhaps but Russian literature is nihilistic. Dostoyevsky praises suffering as an essence of life, Tolstoy thinks obsessively about death, Chekhov writes that life is not worth living and Goncharov believes that doing nothing is better than being active in life. Russia has never developed a rational and empirical philosophy because their thought is essentially religious and irrational. @@user-lx3kw9du9u Mate, I actually consider the Russian literature to be the best in the world precisely because of its irrationality.
The West has a vison of man which is rational, empirical and utilitarian. In contrast, Russians' man is irrational, torn by contradictory desires that cannot be reconciled and often having an urge for self-destruction. There is psychological depth in Russian literature which does not exist in any other literature.
Existential angst exists only in Russia. It is present in all Russian literary texts, starting with Gogol's Coat, through Dostoevsky's Notes from the underground, Pushkin's Onegin and Lermontov's Hero of our times.
However, while irrationalism gives depth to your literature, it makes you incapable of forming a modern nation and a functional state.
I love your literature and cinema (Tarkovsky, Sokurov) but I would never live in Russia. It is a cruel autocracy in which human lives matter little to your mad dictators.
Russia is the only country in the world which systematically humiliated, exiled and executed its greatest artists and intellectuals. And millions or ordinary Russians. Life is intense but cheap in Russia.

That's not a good way to get along with other cultures btw, unless you have 800 military bases across the world however and local politicians dependant on money of international conglomerates 😀 In Russia, we call it 'dictatorship of liberal democracies".
I agree that Russia have complex history, many awful thing happened. So what? We need to go further. Come in Russia and you will see it became one of the best countries for a living. You can't understand Russia with your mind, you can't measure it with a common yard: It (she) has a special posture - you can only believe in Russia.
These lines of the poem - one of the characteristics of the Russian state and the mentality of Russians - have become a well-known literary image of the "mysterious Russian soul", which has a romantic character.
According to some bibliographic sources, this poem was written by Fyodor Tyutchev (November 28) on December 10, 1866.

@@SamsRussianAdventures Where in the US.? The US is so large the experience in Chicago or the Midwest is completely different from the New York or the East Coast. People here actually will smile at you when you pass them on the street. And making assumptions from second hand comments from people whose only impression may be a movie on Netflix? Hardly something to take stock in.

Sam, why do you wear a hat with a Soviet star in your channel photo? It is offensive to Russians and non-Russians alike. Would you wear a hat with a swastika/hakenkreutz in Germany? Do you need a lesson how inhuman communism was?

    • @SamsRussianAdventures
      @SamsRussianAdventures  8 месяцев назад +1

This is a hat that is used for the banya. Russians immediately understand that this is a banya hat and this type of souvenir is on sale all over Russia. The red star is used on Russian military hardware. Many of my friends have the same hat too, it’s nothing like the Swastika. The Soviet Union wasn’t an evil empire! Soviet symbols are not considered evil! But I suppose everything can be considered evil if a person looks for it.

@@SamsRussianAdventures I beg to differ. Millions of Russians and non-Russians were executed and died of hunger and exhaustion in gulags. Their executioners wore the same hats you wear. Wearing such hats today is callous and disrespectful to the victims of communism.

@@SamsRussianAdventures I do not quite understand how you write ''The Soviet Union wasn't an evil empire'' as it certainly was-Lenin himself was a ruthless revolutionary. However, there is the expression 'might is right.' In this light, I suppose had Hitler won the Second World War, today, the nazi swastika would be a banner of pride and military prowess. America claims: 'all men are equal before God' so why do all the original inhabitants of America before the European man came live in isolation on reservations? Enough said?

Russia is infamous. Reasons? Autocracy (samodzerhavie), imperialism, colonialism, militarism, shameless lying in politics, harshness and lack of manners in everyday life of ordinary Russians, insularity and hatred towards Europe and the US, a besieged fortress syndrome, submissiveness of Russians towards the authorities, cult of suffering and death, nihilism.
