@@randalthor6872But not necessarily their behavior or their traditional past actions either. Just sayin', and beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as they used to once say, lol. ;)
I respect the tribal group wanting to preserve their traditional ways, but no culture is stagnant, and the sad truth is that these wonderful animals are endangered today - and - we now know, too, they're quite intelligent. So I don't think they should be hunted either, even under these limited circumstances. There are other ways we can honor our ancestors and ancestral practices.
The grey whale is under Least Concern. So the sad truth is that, these wonderful animals are not endangered today. Our society is just primed to treat whale hunting as taboo. Intelligence is at no point a logical way we divide what animals we consider taboo or not. The Pig is just as sentient and intelligent as any whale, horse or dog, but millions of Americans eat Bacon as breakfast daily. I don't think the world can support that massive whale hunting that existed in the past, but is this not another case of the greater American society, signing very clear treaties with Native American Tribes, then after they absolutely destroy the environment and all the whales through industrial means, renegade on that treaty? Not to say the Makah didn't take part in the whale hunting of the early 1800's, but I don't think anyone can argue that the largest part of the profits went to the colonial Americans that took the land. Leaves a bad taste in my mouth knowing that we have once against broken treaties, because we want to impose our own cultural values. The ecological argument is not very sound considering that more whales die in a single year from recreational boating on the Pacific Coast than the Makah will hunt in 10.
Please stop hunting and murdering these animals. Keep your memories and heritage alive through photos. Watch old movies, celebrate the hunt maybe by some re-enactments-but, come on, are you all really eating muk-tuk for dinner?
They probably did the same thing, they themselves did to their neighbors. Nobody was peaceful, living in harmony with nature. Everyone took what they wanted from who ever they wanted to,when they wanted too.
I don't agree - I think in today's world, it should be considered a violation of international laws protecting these species. For example, Japan kills 3 species of endangered whales under your reasoning and wants to be able to add a 4th endangered whale species. But it's part of an ecosystem that we all share. And given what we know today about whale intelligence, I think these beings have rights too. I recognize that indigenous peoples have suffered huge injustices, and also with the European destruction of their way of life, but with some things you can't go back. Times have changed. People have to find other ways to honor the past and move forward. There's also the Taijii mass slaughter of dolphins -- considered traditional and their hunting rights- the water of the cove turns red with the dolphins' blood. And what about bull fighting in Spain - it's gone on for centuries. That doesn't make it o.k.
they can conserve their culture without hunting whales lmao. Government doesn't even let its own citizens hunt deers in some places. Besides, whales are really mysterious and don't need to hunted for food anymore. There's a grocery store that way!
Please stop killing these animals.
Says the person who's ancestors killed their people and took their land....
😂😂😂 what happened to respecting other cultures? You wouldn't be complaining if they were darker

Not all traditions are good, nor should be continued.
A culture thousands of years behind civilization.
I THOUGHT THERE WERE VERY FEW WHALES LEFT LIKE 94 OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT HOW COULD THAT AMOUNT BE HUNTED!!!!❤
they certainly have the right. And, I certainly hate to see it.

good for our neighbors the makah yee yee
Most of you people that call this evil remember what your ancestors did to the natives....
They probably did the same thing, they themselves did to their neighbors. Nobody was peaceful, living in harmony with nature. Everyone took what they wanted from who ever they wanted to,when they wanted too.
there weren’t any issues with the whales, the salmon, etc until this area was settled by the european powers…
this is still evil
Good to see the Makah regain some of their freedom from our oppressive US government. Shouldn't even have to seek a waiver as it their seas and right.

Conserving culture is important. Good for them. This is entirely different than eastern countries commercial whaling on a mass scale.

This is nothing less then evil. Just because something was tradition does NOT make it ok. Why don't we let them bring back cannibalism to then.
O ya well I pooped at the Jack in the box 🎁
Traditional methods only.

Isn't it illegal to hunt or fish while being drunk?
