- Ever wonder how to crochet linked stitches with the most popular crochet stitches?
In this video I'll show how to eliminate spaces and gaps when making double crochet, half double crochet, and treble crochet stitches. There are several easy techniques that will help with the spaces as well as create a nice new stitch design.
It's important to note there is nothing wrong with the spaces between crochet stitches. These spaces are very useful when crocheting a summer shawl and scarf. However sometimes when making items like a winter beanie in double crochet, linked stitches might be a better option.
I'm using a size G 4 mm crochet hook for my sample and worsted weight 100% acrylic yarn. Feel free to use any other size yarn and hook for samples.

Yes, same! Doing it vertically and in "rows" may make it less stiff than working it horizontally all the way (that's why I don't use it often) 🤩

Exactly, I think if someone is working on a double crochet blanket, maybe change up one row here and there with linked stitches to give it some added texture!
I really like this technique and the different textures that result. I’m making a cross body shrug with a variety of textured stitches and am going to incorporate some of these techniques. Thanks for sharing!

Wonderful! Yes, it's a neat technique. And for me, linked stitches used the same amount of yarn as their regular counterpart. I know this because I ripped out a row of double crochet and changed it to linked double crochet stitches and it used practically the exact same amount of yarn!

I love linked stitches. I remember that Kim Guzman once told me in a discussion on Ravelry that linked stitches are actually Tunisian crochet. This is the same for a chain-less foundation, also Tunisian crochet. Once she told me that info it all became much easier for me.
The linked stitches definitely look like Tunisian simple stitches! In Thérèse de Dillmont's "Encylopedia of Needlework" she gives a closeup diagram of a linked treble crochet, which she called back then a Connected Treble Crochet. That's the best visual I've ever seen of showing how linked stitches look like Tunisian stitches. Ironically her book was written almost 140 years ago, back in 1886. So linked stitches have been around a very long time!

I like the idea but when I think of crocheting I love the spaces and the creativity it brings having the different spacing options with different stitches. I'd use the stitch for socks though 😊

This is awesome! I recently learned about linked double crochets and was wondering if there was a way to do a linked treble crochet. How do you decrease for the following v stitch in the round "dc ch1 dc" My pattern has those vs but does not say how 4too decrease. Thank you.
Thank you! There are several ways to decrease a V stitch, much depends upon exactly how much needs to decrease and how fast. The easiest answer I can provide is this. Normally there would be a DC, CH-1, DC in the CH-1 from the round below. And then another DC, CH-1 DC, in the next CH-1 from the round below. So it ends up being DC, CH-1, DC, DC, CH-1, DC. To decrease, take the two middle double crochet stitches and convert them into a double crochet 2 together stitch (DC2TOG), with the first leg of the DC2TOG stitch made in the first CH-1 and the second leg of the DC2TOG stitch made in the next CH-1. So the pattern ultimately becomes DC, CH-1, DC2TOG, CH-1, DC.

Hi! I love this version of double crochet and currently using it to make a shirt! I did come upon a problem. Increasing stitches is no problem but how would u decrease with this stitch? Theres currently a small hole in my project from decreasing lol 😭😭😭
When would you use this technique? I would think that the fabric would be quite stiff. Maybe for potholders? I suppose if the yarn is soft as in a fine chenille it would help keep it from worming and make a more stable fabric.
The final fabric is not stiff at all, not like what you'd find with rows of single crochet stitches. The same yardage on one row of double crochet is the same yardage used on a row of linked double crochet stitches, maybe an inch or two difference. The vertical drape with linked stitches is relatively the same as regular stitches. However, the stretch from right to left is minimized a bit with linked stitches. I find linked double crochet more useful when making double crochet beanies and baby blankets, as you get the same nice drape, yet minimize the gaps and spaces. Plus it's faster than single crochet.

What a wild idea! So I just tried it and yes it is possible. I started the first foundation double crochet stitch, inserted the hook, made my chain, then finished the stitch, When I went to do the second one, I inserted the hook into that diagonal loop of the previous foundation double crochet, did the yarn over, then made my chain, and completed the stitch. It's a little wobbly for the first several stitches because the horizontal loop's yarn over restricts the hook a bit when making the chain, but it is definitely possible!

Yes, it works great with double crochet beanies, as it eliminates the gaps in between the stitches, while still maintaining the nice softness of double crochet.
Hi! This is a question of curiosity. Why would one do this linking method of DCs and TCs rather than just using a single crochet? Is it faster, maybe, than doing rows of SCs? Thank you!
Single crochet creates a thicker dense fabric, takes more time to make, and uses more yarn. Linked double crochet and treble crochet use less yarn than single crochet, take less time to make, plus still have the nice softer drape that regular double crochet and treble crochet have, unlike single crochet.
Is it Tunesien crochet linked to a chain ?
The treble crochet really looks like Tunisian crochet. The process is pretty much the same.

I have not found it affecting the height of the double crochet stitch whatsoever.

How does it affect the stitch counts? 🤔
It shouldn't affect the stitch count. Linked stitches are still regular stitches, but they join themselves to the previous stitch by one loop in the middle for (HDC & DC) and two loops for treble. Ironically linked double crochet stitches use the same amount of yarn as regular double crochet. I found that out when being indecisive on how to crochet the one sample. One ripped out row of regular double crochet used the exact same amount of yarn when I crocheted it as linked stitches instead.

All I have to say about it is that while it is really pretty, it’s a totally different stitch and doesn’t look like the same thing. A treble is a treble to CREATE a gap.
A treble crochet isn't about the gap, it's about the height of the stitch. In shell and fan stitches, the single crochet, a short stitch, appears on both ends of the shell or fan. Taller stitches like the double crochet and treble crochet are found in the middle of the shell and form the graduated increase and subsequent decrease of the height of the shell. A linked treble crochet will of course look different than a regular treble because it is connected in the center to stitches on both the right and left side of it. If the intention is to create gaps, a gap is created by using a chain 1, chain 2, etc. between stitches.
