      Thank You. I saw the pilot from the series. My uncle and I watched it. I was deeply affected too. I had a couple of rather wild Harleys after that. But in 1978, I bought a 1977 FLH brand new. I road it to Big Sur California and road across the same bridge Michael Parks did in the movie. I've ridden a lot of places since then, but that ride, that ride...

    You are very welcome Mike and it's Adam. RUclips needs a good detailed video of a TC 88B motor upgraded to the 96 with all the goodies in the cam chest including replacing the chain with gears (the weak point of the motor as you know). I did my 02 FXSTB about 8k ago and it's a mental relief especially with the stronger bottom end of the early TC88B years but I still think the Evo is a better motor but I can drive a hell of a lot further before my hands start feeling it on my TC. Just a thought Mike, I feel you are by far the most qualified and thorough Harley mechanic on RUclips and you make it easy to understand. You're a hell of a teacher and as one of those kids growing up watching you guys blaze trails for us youngsters ( i'm 41 lol )I'd like to say thank you for paying it forward. Does the oil flow from the tank to the oil pump, then to the motor, then to the oil filter, and then back to the tank on my 93 fxrs? I have the oil flow diagram in my manual, but its confusing to me. The reason I ask is because I was told it was safe to do a "5 quart" oil change on my bike. Meaning, after I fill the tank with fresh oil, but before I put the new filter on, start the bike and let the remaining dirty oil flow out the oil filter housing at the front of my engine (later model filter mounted in front, not below engine)?

They are thicker and whatever color you chose will be the thickness and viscosity and also the temperature at which they melt. I use blue the most. Lubes orings and gaskets just an awesome grease. This is 3 years late and a dollar short, but while watching that outside key not cooperating, I was brainstorming like I was doing the job myself, and I thought of something that had never occurred to me, and it may not even work anyway, but I wonder if you were to rub that key with a magnet for a minute would it help it stick in the keyway any better while you put the gear on the shaft? Who knows? I just hope that I remember to try my own suggestion the next time I need to do something similar.... But I will probably forget about it, or it won't work anyway :) I am bingewatching these videos and enjoying them very much. Thanks, Mike

    I've been riding and wrenching pans, shovels and iron sportsters since the mid 70s. I recently skipped evos all together. I rode one into town once but that's it. Last year I bought a 05 heritage for a really good price with alot of upgrades done. It has been a learning experience dealing with the weakness in the cam chest. I finally said screw it, called S&S and purchased the cam chest upgrade kit and torque cam. I still ride like I'm on my pan, slow and easy. Now, the fuel injection tuning. Well that's a work in progress. I think the scooter is going to the Dyno. I never needed a Dyno before with carburetors but found someone good with the ThunderMax ECU I put in. It sure is an awful lot of work to make a scooter run right. Oh well. Always learning. Be safe.

  • @rick-kx7gy
    @rick-kx7gy 4 года назад

    Here's a tip for ya . You can simplify installing a lot of things with using studs to temporarily hold gaskets and other parts until bolt time . .Like Harley oil pumps . Screw that juggle act . I would cut the heads off of bolts then cutoff wheel a slot in the un -threaded end for a flat tip screwdriver for removing them . As a retired auto mech. ( '64 - 2013 ) it became a must for setting intakes & plenums on engines sitting damn near up underneath windshields . Kept many sizes & lengths .

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  4 года назад

      Good advice. I do it with primaries and a few other things, but the old oil pumps are already on studs and the cam covers are on dowel pins. But, yep they're in my special tool drawer in both 1/4 20 and 1/4 24.

    I'm an auto mechanic. When I need to hold a gasket in place, like that oil pump gasket, I use vaseline. It's sticky, and it will also completely dissolve into the engine oil. On car engines that don't have a good way to prime the oil pump, I pack it with vaseline. It starts pumping immediately.

    Mike just got done complete rebuild on 1998 evo .... I used an s+s high volume pump.. Rebuild went fine used a ultima crank due to high mileage original... Zippers cycle 80/80 package...used S+S Reed breather. Fueling lifters.. Heat cycles done as per their directions My problem is motor runs and sounds great but I keep getting oil flow out of breather holes. (Top side ) at a lose why?? Have checked and double checked oil line routing it is 👍 could the pressure regulator in pump cause too much oil to top of motor if not working properly 🤔 thanks enjoy your video's

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  4 года назад

      Well, it could be any number of issues. Believe me, I'm not trying to talk down to you. Sometimes, we overlook the obvious. Did you possibly overfill your oil tank. Must have room in there for incoming oil and breather pressure. Is the oil in the tank not overfilled and oil not coming back in? In other words, is the oil pump shaft turning the scavenge gears and noth the feed gears. You may have to go back inside and check all of your keys. Make sure you did everything proper with your pump as per S&S, specifically for a 98 Evo. Be as specific as they are. I'll bet it's something very simple.

    Another great learning experience, Thank you! I do have a question regarding a 76 XLH. My oil pressure light will not go off! Plenty of oil returning to tank. If I take the wire off the sending unit the light goes off. So it was my assumption that the sending unit was stuck/ bad. When I took the sender off the sender was seized to the oil pump nipple and came off with the sending unit. When they were both off to separate the two parts, there was a rubber gasket between the nipple and the oil pump body. Every diagram I have seen shows NO gasket between the nipple and pump? There is a metered orifice in the nipple that I assume allows oil pressure to trip the switch. Is there supposed to be a gasket in that position? It would seem it would block the oil, prevent the proper functioning of the sending unit? Either that or my wire is grounded???

      I'm afraid you'll have to assemble it as per the factory diagram just to find out. Those are all good questions, but, I normally believe the book over anything. That is, the genuine, proper year and model, genuine Harley service manual and parts book.

    Mike, thanks for making these videos! It’s like the manual has come to life. As I was putting my oil pump back together I noticed there are 2 set screw like plugs. Looks like they had some thread sealant on them, just curious what you use and how far to put them in. My manual doesn’t seem to mention them at all. Also do you use any thread sealant on the hose fittings?

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  Год назад +1

      I like teflon tape and most of the fittings are 1/8 NPT. I'm guessing you have a Harley of some sort. Be careful using teflon tape. Don't use too much. Don't block openings with it. Wrap it in the right direction. Practice with junk parts. You'll get it.

Oil line fitting was over tightened at one time or another. Tried s &s oil pump. It was over kill on oil pressure. It was at 50 psi at 750 rpm

    I really enjoyed your videos on this evo motor disassemble and putting it back together. I just bought another bike cheap. A 90 Heritage Classic. It needs some wiring and a new inner primary. I want to pull the motor out and do a rebuild on it. While it's out I'm going to repaint the frame and add some black powder coating. What would a rebuild like your doing cost? Approximately? One shop is telling to just put it back together and see if it runs, another says to do a top end. I want to customized it and make it all black with the intention of keeping it. Thinking about selling the 07 Heritage in my picture. I just want to do things right and once, while I have it that far down. Milage is unknow and the wiring is rough, kinda making me think it wasn't very well taken care of. I also have a new wiring harness I'm putting on.

    • @pacificmike9501

      It all sounds good. Unless it has been abused, the lower end should last a long time. There's bunches of Evos running around out there with over 100 thousand miles on their lower end. As for prices? I'm retired and don't know them any more. Any you see me involved in are just old friend's or my own. Not in the business.

      There is no magnet. You fish everything you can out of the motor with a long handled magnet. Then you try to reconstruct the bearing with the pieces to see if you got it all. Not fun.

    Hi Mike, greetings from the UK and thanks for your invaluable videos. Can I ask you about the bronze bush/tube which the oil pump shaft runs through? I can't find any info anywhere regarding the replacement of this bush. I recently bought a 1996 Evo engine, and it needs a bush installing. I bought a new bush but I made a real mess of installing it, so I removed it. I've bought another new bush but I don't want to make the same mistake again. How would you go about fitting it, please? There's no info in my manual and there doesn't seem to be anything on RUclips. It might be a good idea for you to make a video. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  3 года назад

      It is a pain. Normally, that bushing doesn't wear out and doesn't need replacing. The only one I've replaced was one of my own. Contamination hurt it bad. When rebuilding the motor, I replaced it. I was working with a bare case. I've never done one any other way. I pressed it in and carefully honed it to size.

    If you have to hold your finger on the end of the oil pump shaft, inside the motor, to install the pump, how do you hold it in place if you were just replacing the pump ? Does the shaft float ? If so, can the shaft slide forward ? Is it held somewhat in place by the gear when swapping the pump ?

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  7 месяцев назад

      Thank You. I believe this is a crankcase breather rather than head breather. I need more info. Does this happen after sitting and not running for months? That would make it normal. The oil tank gravity feeds into the pump. There is a ball check in the pump that holds the oil back when it's not running. Little by little, it sneaks past. Put a pan under it when you start it at the begining of riding season. Also, be sure that line has no kinks and drafts down instead of having a curve up and then down or it will act like a trap under your bathroom sink, build up and then blow oil out all at once. After 1991 (this started in 1936), Harley came out with head breathers to please the E.P.A. It's basically no big deal. If it continues all the time rather than having sat for a while, then, it is an oil pump issue.
