    Shatner said he thought them not talking to each other toward the end of Nimoy's life was more about Nimoy not wanting Shatner to see him when he was dying. I prefer to think that too. They were such good friends so it's hard to imagine that it was because of a dispute over whether to add a conversation to a film. I'm sure that dispute was hardly their first over their many years of friendship. Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda would have serious knock you on your a** fights and then go back to building trains together because their friendship was a concrete thing that couldn't be destroyed by a little earthquake. Maybe it's true that Nimoy simply just wanted Shatner to remember them as they were.

      Sometimes humor can be a great cover for some deep seated resentments. And while they chose to "get along" professionally, because it benefited them both to do so, they did have their moments. Unfortunately Shatner seems to have collected a few more than Nimoy had.

    • @zacharylewis2802
      @zacharylewis2802 Год назад +3

      @@spuwhoOne thing I have noticed is that the Shatner resentment only comes from his Star Trek castmates. I’ve never heard of anyone on TJ Hooker or Boston Legal complaining about Shatner. Hell, Shatner himself wrote in one of his books that he only learned about most of the cast hating him in 1993, when he interviewed almost all of the cast and crew of the original series (James Doohan kept rescheduling before ultimately canceling his interview, which didn’t surprise Shatner because both of them had hated each other since day one).

    • @spuwho
      @spuwho Год назад +2

      @@zacharylewis2802 Bill Shatner will admit that things on the TOS set were what he called "competitive". There were few high profile starring roles in the mid 1960's and so when someone got one, they tried to make the most of it. Nimoy shared the same and said their differences usually came down to how a scene would come down. By the time Shatner did TJ Hooker and Boston Legal, the pecking orders were pretty much set. It was already known who the stars were and who was going to get their way. Walter (Koenig) told Shatner that his competitiveness sometimes had consequences because it impacted other people roles or scenes in the production. These actors were getting scraps and they felt Shatner was stealing from the their near empty bowl to fill his nearly full one. Hence resentment. Shatner thought it was normal creative behavior, so did Nimoy. (but you heard no complaints from Dee (DeForest Kelley). He had done lots of movies before TOS and was a gentleman, he had no time to rustle like Nimoy and Shatner. He just wanted to go home and be with his wife. Kelley worked to live, Shatner and Nimoy lived to work. Shatner and Nimoy learned to get along because they figured out they could make a lot of money by doing so. So they did. It worked, they both became multi-millionaires. But Shatner owes Nimoy some special gratitude, it was Nimoy's lawyers who turned over a lot of new revenue stones through his lawsuits.

    • @KenLieck
      @KenLieck 9 месяцев назад +2

      @@zacharylewis2802 Shatner clearly learned a lesson from hearing what the TOS folks thought of him. DeForest Kelley was not vocal about Shatner's ego. He, unlike most of the other TOS cast lived a more "down to Earth" life and remained married to the same woman for his entire life. He wasn't as rich as Shatner and Nimoy, but unlike Shatner and Nimoy and all other TOS cast members has a Movie Icon on his star on the Hollywood Walk of fame as DeForest had been in lots of films prior to doing television.

      I think it helped that Nimoy's character routinely got more attention than Shatner's, who was meant to be the star of the show. Nimoy always had that one-up over Shatner, made even worse by him getting the directors gig and outdoing Kirk on that field as well. Everyone knew it stung Shatner in a big way. I'm sure that made it a lot easier for Nimoy to tolerate the Shatner's ego.

    When I was a teenager in Manhattan, I was a Trekkie who worked at the then Statler Hilton Hotel between 31 and 32nd Street with one of my high school teachers and his family selling T-shirts and Star Trek memorabilia during one of the first Star Trek Conventions in the mid-70s. At the time, I saw both Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner up close and on stage which was awesome (both great guys and still hilarious). Also, I was in an elevator with George Takei (he was wearing a jogging suit at the time), he was very pleasant and we had a brief conversation. Unfortunately, I never got to personally meet Nichelle Nicols but got a chance to ask her questions when she was on stage. It was such a glorious time back then, and I do remember the early friendship between both Nimoy and Shatner. Leonard may you rest in peace and Bill "Live Long and Prosper" at 92! It was great seeing these two again in this video. Thanks for bringing me down memory lane!♥

    Huge credit to Eric L. Watts (the man with the beard), DragonCon’s TrekTrak coordinator at the time, for making happen what many thought wasn’t possible - Shatner and Nimoy together on stage at a con once again. It took a lot of effort and diplomacy to pull this off. One epic and miraculous hour for Trek fans!

    • @fslx
      @fslx Год назад +2

      @jasonvoorhees5640 By then it had been several years since they had appeared together at a convention, due to various hard feelings that highly dynamic personalities who work closely too-often have.
      They were at one more con in Vancouver after this DragonCon, then did not see each other again (almost five years) before Nimoy died in 2015.
      What you see here is a brief period where our heroes were able to set private problems just enough to the side (tho obviously still mutually acknowledged) to give us some serious gold.

I don't care what commitment Shatner had, when a so called "life long friend" dies, Shatner could have postponed his schedule which in real life was meaningless compared to honoring a "best friend" at his Funeral. I personally when not several funerals of colleagues and ex-colleagues funerals as they died way too young from heart attack, Colon Cancer, and ALS. I felt I owed it to their families.

    William Shatner was, I think, devastated when Nimoy stopped communicating with him toward the end of his life. I don't know what happened, but it's possible that Shatner's old friend didn't want to be seen in such a frail and vulnerable state as Nimoy's health deteriorated. Some people get like that. They would rather you remembered them as strong and vital, even though I believe it's better to have one last good hug or handshake to see each other off no matter the circumstances. I would like to think that Nimoy, in his heart, still cared about Shatner until the end.

      The falling out was a result of Shatner's 2011 Star Trek documentary called "The Captains". Nimoy was asked to appear in it and he declined. Nimoy was secretly filmed at a Star Trek convention, and that footage was included in the documentary. Shatner claimed ignorance about it, and attempted to put the blame on the filming company/editors. Nimoy called B.S. on it... how does the Directory/Writer/Co-Producer (Shatner) not know what is in his final product?
