I actually like the way the keyboard looks, but might also change the keycaps for a nicer aesthetic. Your keyboard came out looking great; I like the color combination.
thank you so much for posting such an in-depth video for modding this board!! i've been meaning to mod this one but i was so hesitant since it would be my first time 😩 this helps a lot!
if you want more sound from the plate, i recommend taking out the case foam since the tape mod doesn't require foam at the bottom. the tape mod is meant to bounce the sound from the pcb back up so you would hear the pcb sound more then the case sound. you would want more of the pcb/plate sound themselves instead of the case because the case is made of cheap plastic
Oh yeah you're right 100%! I think lately the trend has been the poppy creamy sound of the jelly so I get into the habit of doing the same mods for every single board but i'm starting to venture out! Thanks so much for your feedback!

I recently purchased the RK68 for my first mechanical keyboard mod and they’ve updated how they ship now. I Purchased the one with that came with the MX Browns but when opening the keyboard it already had foam at the bottom, a dampener in the middle and the stabilizer were lumped but no holee mod. I was confused and thought it was maybe a return but all i ended up doing was putting my GP switches in and changed the key caps and it sounds great. It sounded great already with the MX cherries but it was mainly due to all the mods that had already been done. I don’t know if this is how they are shipping them no but it was nice. I still think I’m going to do a holee mod on the stabilizers but they are pretty solid as is.
Wait.. that’s insane! I mean, less work for you but hey, that’s a great deal. You paid just standard for that? If so, then holee mod those stabs and you’re smooth sailing from here my friend

Hey there! might want to change the description a little. I'm pretty sure the keycaps you used in this build are not EPBT keycaps, well at least the link doesn't show an EPBT set, might cause some confusion to the newer folk in the hobby. Also, I'm curious since the board is north-facing and you're using Cherry keycaps. did you experience any keycap interference? I have zero experience using those switches and they're hella expensive to ship it to where I'm from. Other than that I enjoyed the video :) edit: grammar
Oh thanks so much for looking out! I spent a lot of time trying to find the perfect set that matched the theme of the person I was building it for so I might’ve seen EPBT on KBDFANS so much I just made a typo! Nonetheless it’s PBT material, I will definitely change that, so thank you 🙏🏽 As for the switch interference, I had none surprisingly! I was worried about that but the silk emeralds had a bit of a longer stem so that is a factor
I love the quality of the video for the amount of subs you have! I have a keyboard youtube channel and I know how hard the grind is. May I ask? Are the keycaps you used in the video similar to akko cherry profile keycaps in sound? How do the NK silks sound are they good?

i'm entirely new to this custom keyboard community, and i like this build! may i ask if you could recommend any 60% hot swappable keyboards? (budget) i would like to try out what you did in the video but with a 60% one.
Welcome to the community! If you have any questions, feel free to comment more! I would say a good budget 60%’s would be GamaKay Mk61, RK61 or RK68, or even the Womier K66. I know many of these are super popular but there’s a reason why!
Yep, these keycaps do not offer shine thru - so in the dark you aren’t able to see the exact lettering/legends. However, there is RGB that still shines around the keycap so you still can see your board
Seriously underrated! I own a RK68 as well and this has inspired me to mod mine. I have one question, I might sound a bit stupid but how do you know if the keycaps you buy fit the keyboard? I'm looking for one that can show the RGB light more and so far I've found the POM Jelly keycaps but I have no idea whether it would fit my keyboard or not. Thanks! Also continue with your videos, they're great quality and amazing.
Thank you so much for your comment and so glad you liked the video! There’s never a stupid question: you’re right the jelly ones are probably the best! If you’re worried if they would fit your RK68, they def shokld. Just make sure before you buy a set that they have a shift key that’s a bit smaller!
Where did you buy it from? I saw it on Amazon but the blue switched were not included do you mind giving me a international link for the blue switches?
Hello!! I've been looking through alot of rk68 modding, ever since im planning on purchasing one asap. It may sound different due to my choice of switch, which would be the Cream blue or Cream yellow akko switches, which tends to be alot more poppier and creamier when lubed. I noticed that when it was time to tape the plate, there was white foam also attached, and i was wondering if it came ootb or you personally bought it to make it have a sound difference. Also, do you think that the cream switches would have a slight difference but still sound thock like as yours? or would it reflect more sound and make it become more snappier and clacky.
I purchased the board brand new and it didn’t have that white film that you described. Because both creams and these silk emeralds at a blend of nylon and PC, I believe it would definitely sound creamier
Questins; Does the RK68 have north facing or south facing PCB? If its north facing, then did you have interference with the keycaps because they are cherry profile? if so, Does the interference annoy you or not?
The RK68 does have north facing PCB - I had very little switch interference with these keycaps surprisingly - but I’ll be doing a video on ways to mitigate the interference on these type of boards and cherry profile
Yes! Once you’ve taken out the stabs (follow the video) I would suggest cleaning them. Take them apart, get a bowl of dish soap and room temp water and just let it soak/rinse in there for a bit and wipe off any pre-lube. This method does require you to “re-lube” your stabs and possibly clip them so the rattle isn’t there either. I can make a concise video on it if you’re interested!
im kinda new to the keyboard moding so thx for the vid ! i have a question i got a skyloong sk68 with optical switches, i got some krytox lube for the switches and stabiliser, so my question is i have a a generic Chinese dielectric grease from aliexpress and i dont have the expensive permatex eveyone uses, is it fine if i lube the wires using it ? cuz 14 dollars for permatex is kinda too much for me
I’m not sure what brand or what makes up that Chinese brand of dielectric grease but yes, not all dielectric grease are the same. Amazon does have very small amounts of permatex for way cheaper than $14!
Here’s the link to some cheap permatex on Amazon: Permatex 22058 Dielectric Tune-Up Grease, 3 oz. Tube www.amazon.com/dp/B000AL8VD2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_98E0MMZF8CABJ0PN4H5E
Technically with a north-facing PCB, yes there will be interference, however I didn’t experience any because these NK Silks have a long stem so it mitigates it a bit. I’ll be doing a video soon about switch interference and how I go about it!
Yeah I started off with electric tape but this mod started with painters tape and thousands of people have used it and haven’t really heard reports of fire hazard. But yes, I’d say especially for budge boards with batteries that get extremely hot, quickly, I’d be cautious
hi awesome video! just wondering if there's an alternative to the nk silk emeralds because it looks like nk doesn't sell them anymore. there are other silk switches that they sell and i was wondering if any of them were just recolors of the silk emeralds. i plan on doing a similar mod!
I actually didn’t get a chance to try their “newer” silk switches.. but I’d assume they those would be recolored or spring swapped. I would go for them because they are relatively inexpensive for how good the “Silk” series is! Let me know how your build goes!
Hi, I'm totally new to the hobby, got myself a keychron q2 w/ knob. So, I was wondering, since I was able to see that you have some kind of foam/paper between the pcb and the plate. What's the purpose of it and what's the mod called? I've had my keyboard for a month and for now I've only done the tape mod. I also changed the g pro browns to gateron box inc black switches and bought some SA-profile keycaps from kbdfans Thanks for the help :)
NICE! I’m thinking of getting the Q2 with a knob but I wanna wait for the white one hopefully! The foam between the plate and PCB is PE Foam which is pretty inexpensive and it works very similarly to the tape mod! It gives a more poppy/creamy sound to switches. A disclaimer would be when pushing in switches, the pins may bend so just be careful! Your build sounds so good tho oh my.. I def wanna see and hear it! Good on you! Try out the PE Foam mod if you want maximum poppy/clacky/creamy sounds! Thanks for commenting!
@@jepsei Gotta lube the switches someday so I may aswell do the PE foam mod at the same time. How much time does lubing a 65% keyboard take you usually? Thanks
Honestly.. I think the lubing and filming process made the BIGGEST difference to me personally! Many can say that the tape and PE foam made the difference but I’d say from stock -> lubed and filmed? That’s it for me
Nicely filmed and edited! I'm intending to mod my rk71 as well and this comes in really handy! I'm wondering whether to keep the stock stabs or to get the everglide V3 stabs. In your opinion, does it make a lot of difference after lubing?
Thanks so much! Glad you liked the vid! I think that lubing the wires is extremely Important, but if you really are in a pinch, then you can get away with just that. I do recommend though, lubing the housings AND the wire (with 205g0 and dialectic grease, respectively) just to mitigate any further rattle! Hope I answered your question! Also… lemme know how the V3 stabs treat ya if you end up getting them!
And also is there a way to atleast try to make my modded + cream switches sound slightly close to the kdb67 lite? I am sure there isn't really a possible way to do so but if there is, please let me know!! if you never built the kdb67 lite or experienced the cream blues or cream yellows, the place to really observe the switches and keyboard is MCZ studio!!
I have build a couple of KBD67’s the build quality with those are quite different. They house a silicone dampener with a PC plate so thocc and creaminess is easily to come by (in my opinion)!
I just use a plastic bag/ziplock and a few drops of a more viscous and thinner lube like Krytox 105g0! I shake it up and massage them so it all coats evenly!
There’s a function button which you hold down, and then press the appropriate key! Even though the keycaps have changed, the programming stays the same!
The cable itself is called a “coiled cable”. The big white-ish piece is called the aviator connector. Both of these, honestly, serve no functionality purpose, at least in MY opinion! They sure do look cool though, right? 😅
The quality of the video and the editing and sound is phenomenal for someone with a small RUclips fan base, keep it up and you’ll get a million subs in no time

Thank you so much for your comment and so glad you liked the video! There’s never a stupid question: you’re right the jelly ones are probably the best! If you’re worried if they would fit your RK68, they def shokld. Just make sure before you buy a set that they have a shift key that’s a bit smaller!
@@jepsei Ohh okay tysm! Helped a lot :)
Where did you buy it from? I saw it on Amazon but the blue switched were not included do you mind giving me a international link for the blue switches?
I can certainly look!

Wil tealios v2 fit in this board?
Yes it’ll fit! Tealios would sound great on this board
@@jepsei thanks
Im the 1k like, very underrated
What a legend 😭
Questins; Does the RK68 have north facing or south facing PCB? If its north facing, then did you have interference with the keycaps because they are cherry profile? if so, Does the interference annoy you or not?
The RK68 does have north facing PCB - I had very little switch interference with these keycaps surprisingly - but I’ll be doing a video on ways to mitigate the interference on these type of boards and cherry profile
ok what was that?!? MR ZENON MAN OF THE 21ST CENTURY?!
HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT REFERENCE?! WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT
IDKKK
i watched the movieee
whay do u meaaan
Literally almost all of the keys with stabs on my Rk68 (Besides of the spacebar) is super mushy. Is there a way to fix this?
I got the akko rose red for 11 per packs and it sounds decent
Hello might I ask, does it have any interference with the cherry profile keycaps?
Technically with a north-facing PCB, yes there will be interference, however I didn’t experience any because these NK Silks have a long stem so it mitigates it a bit. I’ll be doing a video soon about switch interference and how I go about it!
Hi, what website are you using for that typing test? Thanks!
I always use typings.gg!
i don't recommend painters tape because of the fire hazard, i recommend elecronic tape
Yeah I started off with electric tape but this mod started with painters tape and thousands of people have used it and haven’t really heard reports of fire hazard. But yes, I’d say especially for budge boards with batteries that get extremely hot, quickly, I’d be cautious
was there any interference on the cherry-keycaps since the switches are north facing?
I actually did a paper/foam mod for the keycaps! I’m planning on making a video on it!
the edit omg
Yes only getting better from here!
hi awesome video! just wondering if there's an alternative to the nk silk emeralds because it looks like nk doesn't sell them anymore. there are other silk switches that they sell and i was wondering if any of them were just recolors of the silk emeralds. i plan on doing a similar mod!
I actually didn’t get a chance to try their “newer” silk switches.. but I’d assume they those would be recolored or spring swapped. I would go for them because they are relatively inexpensive for how good the “Silk” series is! Let me know how your build goes!
Hi,
I'm totally new to the hobby, got myself a keychron q2 w/ knob.
So, I was wondering, since I was able to see that you have some kind of foam/paper between the pcb and the plate. What's the purpose of it and what's the mod called?
I've had my keyboard for a month and for now I've only done the tape mod. I also changed the g pro browns to gateron box inc black switches and bought some SA-profile keycaps from kbdfans
Thanks for the help
:)
Thanks
@@Viqsyy for a 65, if I’m really dialed in maybe an 1.5 hours or so but I’m usually watching a show or listening to music 😂
@@jepsei Alright, nice to know!
Thanks for the help
I am going to get a RK68 soon, i want to do this exact same thing but im scared i will break it.
You won’t I promise you! Just go nice and slow
what do you think made the biggest difference in the sound?
Honestly.. I think the lubing and filming process made the BIGGEST difference to me personally!
Many can say that the tape and PE foam made the difference but I’d say from stock -> lubed and filmed? That’s it for me
where did you get your switches?
I got them from NovelKeys! They have discontinued them but I have 70 switches left if you’re interested!
@@jepsei I am interested, but I have to check with my parents if they are ok. And how much will it cost? (Including shipping).
I think that lubing the wires is extremely
Important, but if you really are in a pinch, then you can get away with just that. I do recommend though, lubing the housings AND the wire (with 205g0 and dialectic grease, respectively) just to mitigate any further rattle! Hope I answered your question!
Also… lemme know how the V3 stabs treat ya if you end up getting them!
was there any interference with the cherry keycaps and north facing pcb?
I thought the same but NK silks have that long stem and I was expecting some interference too but there was none!
Did you also put pe foam in between pcb and plate?
Yessir!
did you use a phone to record the whole video?
I didn't actually 😅 I used a DLR lol
Is this only wired? Because i see no battery in the case
Yes this model was the wired version! I believe there is one that's wireless though
Damn, I wanted to make this exact mod, but the NK Silk Emeralds are no longer avail
If you’re still interested I have a batch of 70 just sitting in my switch storage container! If you want DM me on Instagram, @jepsei_
@@jepsei Thanks for your quick response, I am in Canada though!
It's ok not to put any plate foam? TIA
You can! I haven’t found any plate foam that would match perfectly for an RK68, but you can def make your own!
I’m new to keyboard what do u use to shake up the springs?
I just use a plastic bag/ziplock and a few drops of a more viscous and thinner lube like Krytox 105g0! I shake it up and massage them so it all coats evenly!
@@jepsei thanks so much had no idea what that was lol
how to use the Media keys like pause song or next or back?
There’s a function button which you hold down, and then press the appropriate key! Even though the keycaps have changed, the programming stays the same!
Bro if im gonna foam mod should i remove the battery permanently?
The battery is mainly for the wireless connectivity, so if you don’t want it, you can remove it!
@@jepsei thank you so much for answering!
What's the thickness of the foam?
The case foam was roughly 5mm-6mmish?
where'd you find this keycap set, are there different colors?
I got this set from KBDfans; there are a lot of different colors as well as profiles on their website!
im modding this keyboard with Akko v3 cream blue pro switches and ordering the keyboard black
Ohooooo let me know how it goes! Love to see people get more into and modding this board!
@@jepsei welp nevermind i found a redragon keyboard that works very well so idk which one im gonna ask my sister which one
@@jepsei nevermind again! im getting the rk68 again instead i just remembered i had some spare pudding keycaps to use
What do you call on those cables?
The cable itself is called a “coiled cable”. The big white-ish piece is called the aviator connector. Both of these, honestly, serve no functionality purpose, at least in MY opinion! They sure do look cool though, right? 😅
