On menu 8 standby: low resolution on helps with over heating I hear. But then someone mentioned to turn off if you trigger from just the ninja? On r6 hdmi display does don’t record to card when camera plus hdmi is selected
I don't have your camera, so I can't be 100% sure, but this usually is the result of an HDMI cable dying on you. Try switching HDMI cable first. If that doesn't work see if you can isolate which HDMI port could be compromised. Run a cable from you camera to a different HDMI device (even a TV can work). If you get a signal you know the camera HDMI port is safe. And also try the same thing into the Atomos. The other option would be to make sure you are exporting a lower res HDMI signal from the camera. Good luck
I also learned today by fooling around how to record 4KU 4KHQ & FHD on the ninja.. If you wish to record 4k or FHD, please choose ProRes as your codec on the Atomos and set your camera to output a standard video signal (not RAW). This would be a very good video lesson if you could go over this. It was a struggle to figure this out for me Some people only know how to record 5K and 8K on the atomos Ninja Plus not knowing they can record full HD 4KU as well. Great video.
It's a great trick to know, that's why I made sure to split up the sections in my video between RAW and Non-RAW options. ProRes is a great codec. I think the more people become aware of this, the more it will help them expand their R5. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!
If the Ninja doesn't trigger from the R6 does that mean the cable is not compatible? Most of the time when I turn on triggers in the Ninja, it's immediately starts recording on the Ninja without even touching the camera.
Any time you have internal recording, there is an overheat risk. I find using this method in NON-RAW workflows, if you cut on Standby: Low Res, you can greatly expand the time you can shoot on your R5. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!
This really plays a huge role on commercial or film settings. I have had cards fail in the past, which if I did not have a backup recording, would have cost tens of thousands of dollars to replicate what we shot. Painful experience has taught me that it's not a question of "if" a card will fail you some day, but "when. The other benefit is that it could allow you to make on set proxies in real time, if that is something you need. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!
But you lose screen touch AF when you use an external monitor non? How do you manage without? There must be a work around I don't know about because it's hard for me to believe so many don't care about losing AF. Or was I informed incorrectly and you CAN control AF on the external monitor like you did on LCD?
Hi can anyone tell me when have external monitor plugged in on R5 can't playback on monitor and camera screen frozen so have to unplug hdmi cable makes monitor useless. Set the setting on R5 to playback on both but still nothing
I prefer the Atomos to be separate from the R5. One time it stopped recording because of the Canon limiter and the Atomos stopped recording as well. And it lost part of the event it was recording. I don't see the point. You just touch the Atomos record and that's it. Another problem I noticed is that if you go into the Canon menu, the Atomos menu is displayed while recording. It's crazy. Because of these limitations I switched to Lumix. And the difference is huge. Panasonic did a good job designing their cameras.
Hi . How can I switch off HDMI info off . I want to shoot video externally in Atmos and click picture in camera simultaneously. What I see that the exif details as well as my focus points are also being recorded in Atmos which I don’t want . Can you please help me
Like others, I assumed that recording internally and externally simultaneously would not resolve the overheating issue. What's your experience with this?
Any time you do internal recording in the danger zones (8K, 4kHQ, 4K/120) you run the risk of overheating. I have achieved unlimited recording times with an external recorder, but never with internal. That being said, if you are not shooting RAW, cutting on Standby: Low Res and shooting simultaneously will greatly increase your time before overheating. Thanks for the comment and have a great day.
Was searching for ways to trigger recording using the physical button for the longest time and this just pops up! :) Hm so there's no way to trigger 4k 60fps or other codecs WITHOUT having to record both to SD card and Atomos? If the SD card has to record, that'll make the camera overheat defeating the good use of the external recorder... :(
Sorry but i dont really get why you would want to record on both internal and atomos? Isnt the whole point of the ninja to solve overheat and expensive sd cards (and larger monitor display of course)? Seems totally counter productive to record on both systems.. each to their own of course but i dont get it.
Hey LJ, I do not use the Ninja as only an overheat and monitoring solution. The biggest reason to do this is in order to create safety backups of all the files in the field in real time. I do a lot of commercial work for higher end clients and some of them demand ProRes deliverables. This allows me to have backup recordings of everything, and not risk losing tens of thousands of dollars worth of footage if a drive or card goes bad, which (if you shoot long enough) is guaranteed to happen at some point. I also sometimes use the Ninja on my RED Komodo for the same reason, so I always have double backups of everything. Have a great day!
I’m using R5c with the Ninja V+ underwater with a nauticam housing. I would record in 4K 100fps internal and 50fps in external as a back up. But i need to find out why my HDMI Time Code and Rec Command EXT are grey i can’t click on them 😅
Thanks for the Tip. I just enable it. Q. is there a way to shoot 4K /120 to your Ninja V? I want to shoot a slow mo shot but can't seem to figure it out with my Ninja V.
One work around you can do is to film 4K/120 internally to your R5 and then playback the internal footage while externally recording the playback on your Ninja V.
@@Malick333 That's a nice little hack to get 4K/120 ProRes if you need it and have the time in the field. Thanks for sharing the tip. Have a great day!
I'm a Ninja V+ and R5 owner. Always excellent tips on your channel. I didn't realize you could simultaneously record on R5 and Ninja V+. So your tip allows you to both simultaneously record on both devices and initiate the recording by pressing one button on the R5. Is that correct?
That's right, Brent. This basically treats the V+ like an integrated part of the R5, so once you hit record on the R5, the V+ automatically starts recording too. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!
I'm pretty new to video n have the r6 and am considering getting a ninja v as it is on sale. My main reason for wanting to record externally was encountering overheating when shooting in 4k. I do not plan to shoot raw so does this mean I cannot record to ninja v only?? Sorry I'm a lil confused
Having to have a card in the camera to trigger the HDMI recording completely 100% kills my reason for recording externally. Anyone know of a workaround?

Fake news! you can not record simultaneously on the sd card and on the ninja V with the r6. You can, but as soon as you hit record it will display the red record sign on the ninja v display. If you try to enable the camera + display setting in the r6 menu it will say "Device connected via hdmi is used instead of camera for menu display and image playback". It works only on r5. It is not working with canon r6 mark ii either, just tried.
Jeez… I’ve had an Atomos ninja V on my R5 for over a year and just now knew you could do this.
And camera stops recording at 29:59 Min right?
Thank you. Saved me a great deal of frustration trying to work out how to trigger the Ninja V from an R5.

Hello, i can’t click on HDMI Time Code / Rec Command(EXT REC) both options are Grey 😢
Can tapping the Record on the atomos also trigger a record on the camera. The reverse of what the video addresses.
The HDMI signal can only go one way, so there is no way that I have ever heard of to trigger the camera from the Atomos. Have a great day!
