Lard used to be the cheapest in our stores years ago, considered "poor man oil". Just yesterday, I checked, it is 200gr 1.10 euros. The same price zlmost as butter. Now I can only buy oil, which is 1 Liter 1,90 eur the cheapest. Hell from Estonia.❤
My Grandmother always used ‘suet’ especially in her pastry - also in the winter we were always given rosehip syrup, and we lived in the middle of a town in the UK. It s so lovely to see you us in the ‘old’ recipes. Sending best wishes to you and yours.
This is the first video of yours recommended to me by the all-mighty “algorithm”. Not sure why,,, but hey,,, I’ll subscribe because you cut up your herbs with a Buck 110. I’m in.
Young lady you are amazing. The knowledge that you have acquired about different natural plant species, and their uses, is remarkable. Young man that half wall and door looks great. Thanks again for sharing.
I stumbled upon your channel tonight and subscribed before the first video was over! Oh my goodness, I am so impressed by the two of you. All your studying and hard work has certainly paid off. Such a beautiful life. Looking forward to many more videos. God bless.
Wow! You got a lot of tallow out of that great job 👍, Awesome little barn cheap & easy :) Nice to see more young folks doing some of the old preserving things that are health for you & teaching how it's done, Awesome ! Merry Christmas !
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from Minnesota! I found your channel beginning of Dec 2024 and noticed you have gained around 10k subscribers in 1 months time. That is incredible! Keep going! Thank you for sharing your content. 🙏🤘😎🇺🇸
Thank you so much, we are happy people enjoy them and are interested in our simple life! Merry Christmas and happy holidays, thank you for following along as well! 😊🎄
recently found your channel, and I'm addicted! Already watched them all and can't wait for more. So straightforward and honest, and great how you explain everything you do. Would love to know more about how you came to this lifestyle. Maybe once winter is in full force you can do a q&a. Best wishes for the season.
Found this channel about a week ago. I love your videos! Interesting! I love to hear your daughter laugh, what a joy. I can understand living as you do.
This lifestyle really keeps you looking fit and healthy 😊 loving the crunching sound of snow under your boots a belated Merry Christmas to you 🌲 thanks for sharing ❤️🏴xxxx
About 8:13 you were talking about the birch bark for fire starter, if it's white bark it's called white birch which Is probably all you have up there. There is a yellow birch too but that likes warmer weather generaly found southern part Canada. Thought I would let you know so you know for future reference. Awome fire starter and awsome video keep up the good work!
Great, great video, really enjoyed it!!! Merry Christmas from the northeast mountains of Georgia...36° here at 9:07 p.m., clear and windy...praying you all have a very good Christmas...🎄 🎅
Just started watching this month. Great content and impressive info. I’m in the so. Calif mountains at 6,000’. Only get a couple feet of snow a year but cold enough to appreciate what your family is able to do. One thing though, I noticed that you stopped the ‘jazz hands’ when talking. I found that entertaining, lol!
Thank you for watching! I never noticed how much I use my hands until filming, it’s hard to explain on video how to do something without “jazz hands” but trying 🤣
I recall some 53+ years ago making Bannock Flat bread in a hot skillet from my Boy Scout mess kit. Though I was at the other end of America on an island beach just a couple of miles from Key West. Wrapped around some fresh caught fish fried. Scorching hot sun great sea breeze. Best
You are so adept at everything you do. Did you learn all these things you do by trial and error, or did you educate yourself or have help showing you how? Your family has so much charisma, I find myself wondering, "What are they doing today?" Thanks for your lovely vlogs. They are very appreciated.
We are so happy you enjoy them! It’s been a learning process from years of homesteading with trial and error, and also learning from others. We’ve had some wonderful mentors over the years! Thank you for watching ❤️😊
I have been wanting to try making a tallow soap! I have been making soap for almost five years, and have never known where I can get, or how to make, tallow. But this was very informative, and I am really thinking about how to procure beef fat, the wheels are turning in my head!
I've gone to all the grocers in my area, no tallow. I so want to do this. I do pork tho, I mix some of the cracklings in my cornbread and sometimes biscuits. As always enjoy your videos. Hope the little one gets better. Merry Christmas 🎄
Try a butcher, or a local rancher! Usually you can get it cheap. Mixing in cornbread or biscuits is a great idea- we are going tonight for sure! Thank you so much, she is back to her happy self ❤️ Merry Christmas! 😊
My dad was a logger. He cut wood all year round. We never ran out. He was also a pig farmer. We never had fancy buildings. Dad built them and those were better than the fancy ones and lasted for at least 40 years if not longer.
Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄 I'm a new subscriber from Indiana and watching your videos I can experience Alaska !! Love your videos and love your hat with pine trees 🌲 may I ask where you purchased it? Have a great Christmas.
So inspired and in awe of you guys! Have you considered putting together a cookbook of all your go to meals and all the delicious sourdough discard recipes? Would be something a lot of us would love to buy!!
I just found your channel…I’ll be following along and thanks for sharing. I can tell how cold it is by the snow crunch. I live in temperate western NC now but remember that painful snow crunch and the car not starting.
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year from Arkansas! I recently rendered tallow for the 1st time & absolutely love the outcome & love that I could add this product to my canned goods in my root cellar! I want to start making & possibly dehydrating sour dough starter.
That tallow is carnivore haven! I have a pantry full of jars like those I bought from a local family farm. The healthiest fat by far you can use for anything.
youtube just suggested your videos to me. Not sure why since I live in suburbia but I find it a fascinating way of life. 😀Working my way through your content. 😉

I just found your channel today. Hope you had a Merry Christmas. I am going to binge watch a bunch of videos. So far my most pressing question is do you guys ever sit and relax by the fire? I couldn’t do it. Altho I have always wanted to live in the woods in a cabin😊. My hats off to your family. I have a feeling I am going to learn a lot ❤
For those who don’t know tallow is rendered beef fat and lard is rendered pork fat.
And chicken fat is The Schwartz (Spaceballs reference).
Also deer fat= tallow
Lard used to be the cheapest in our stores years ago, considered "poor man oil". Just yesterday, I checked, it is 200gr 1.10 euros. The same price zlmost as butter. Now I can only buy oil, which is 1 Liter 1,90 eur the cheapest. Hell from Estonia.❤

There’s really little science that show echinacea works, but as long as people think it helps them, why not as long as they aren’t harmed.
As a Fairbanks boy love to see this💪🏽

Excellent video ❤Thank you
We are happy you enjoyed it! ❤️
I can't tell you how thankful I am to have found you. You bring me joy! You and your surroundings are truly beautiful.
Interesting on charring the wood post to keep it stronger. , I will tuck it away, though I don't live in the manner in which your family does.
Amy, the tallow and spruce pitch was so interesting! You seem to be a wealth of knowledge. I will see if my pine have any. Do you use spruce tips for tea?
Also, how do you manage laundry?
God bless you ❤
Kimmie
We are so happy to hear that! Pine is great too. Spruce tips make wonderful iced tea, jelly, infused honey, sugar or syrup! We do laundry the old fashioned way- a big pot with hot water and castile soap. Hang dry by the woodstove. Thank you so much for watching!
Just found your channel! REALLY hoping you do tons of herb, canning, etc videos 😊😊😊😊😊
We have a lot of videos in the works, and hope you enjoy them! 😊
My mom used to feed the chickens the crackling as well
That is a great idea, especially in winter!
@holdfastalaska yup!
Merry Christmas 🎄 and Happy New Year 🥳 all the best in 2025 Dennis and Amy
Merry Christmas and happy new year to you as well Kevin! 😊
Merry Christmas🎄🎄🎄🎄
Merry Christmas to you as well 😊🎄
Excellent production value. I'm doing the same, except on a much smaller scale. A tea spoon in a ripping hot pan to sear my 🥩 meat - finished with a pinch of Maldon Salt and butter.
Thank you! Love tallow (and a little butter) for cooking steak! 🥩
Nice coop you built.
Thank you! 😊
Came for the Tallow… got a few more tidbits.. Cheers.
We are happy to hear you gained something from it! 😊
Nice to see you talk about energetics rather than one size fits all herb use. Also, I thought I had the market cornered on carving herbs with a Buck 110. Guess not.
Thank you! Thought it was a helpful piece of info for folks. That’s too funny 🤣 Buck 110 is my favorite everything knife!
@@holdfastalaska You did a great job with the energetics synopsis. I have many 110’s including one passed down to me by my great grandfather. Awesome knife. Loved your tallow walk through. We have to pressure can ours otherwise it goes bad quickly in this warm climate. Looking forward to your next vid.
❤Merry Christmas ❤
And a Merry Christmas to you too! 🎄😊
Merry Christmas.
Same to you! 😊🎄
I'm pretty sure back when KFC got started that it was common to make fried chicken by deep frying it in beef tallow oil.
I bet you are right! It was a common cooking oil for a very long time.
Hi I'm a new subscriber i went back thru your videos and loved them and cant wait to see more i was wondering could yall do a lay out of yalls cabin maybe a walk through and tell us more about your property and how big it is ? Thanks 😊
Thank you for watching! Property tour coming soon!
love this new fan ofv\channel
Thank you 😊
Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas to you too! 😊🎄
If you can cut up onions and put it in a jar with a spoonful of sugar. It melts down to a syrup and I put a few cloves crunched up in it too. Or put in hot water to make hot tea.
Thank you for the tip, we will definitely have to try that! ❤️
it's perfect how you made that little house for the animals but I see there's little cracks were cold can go in do you cover those up or do you ever insulate
We put a thick piece of plywood on the inside to cover all the cracks and make more of a windbreak! There are a few layers of straw on the ground too ❤️
Good job
Thanks so much! 😊
best way to infuse ginger is Grate it and squish the juice out. quick and more potent than infusing it for hours
Thank you!
You’re very welcome! 😊
Merry Christmas 🎄I just came across your channel. Great videos! Thanks for sharing! New Subbie here 😊
Thank you, and Merry Christmas to you as well! 😊🎄
You can fill those wood cracks with moss or hay for insulation
Great natural insulators, and plan on it! Thank you 😊
Goid luck@@holdfastalaska
I just found your channel today. Hope you had a Merry Christmas. I am going to binge watch a bunch of videos. So far my most pressing question is do you guys ever sit and relax by the fire? I couldn’t do it. Altho I have always wanted to live in the woods in a cabin😊. My hats off to your family. I have a feeling I am going to learn a lot ❤
Thanks so much! We are happy you found us 😊 sometimes we do, usually at night or in the winter days ❤️ Merry Christmas to you as well!
Have you seen any bears? I grew up on crackling. Soup look delicious.
We had one try to get in the outhouse in fall, but that’s it! Thank you 😊
When I’m cutting wood I like to have buckets all around to throw wood scraps into and not have to handle it twice.
Great idea!
