Hey Tom, now that I'm up to date with all your episodes I wanted to say I wish you were my drunk uncle Larry. I love the philosophy and a guitar riff to top it off. I tried closing my eyes and playing. I thought it was really weird to hear things instead of playing my usual licks. Thought I was doing good and I open my eyes and my wife is asking what I'm doing. She said I was rocking back and forth and making some strange constipated faces 👍

I’ve always consider myself a Rhythm guitar player, growing up all my buddies just wanted to learn the riff and the leads, when we would get together to play that’s all they knew, The Riff and The Lead, it got very boring very quick, so I learned the songs, then everybody wanted to jam with me because I knew songs, can’t have a band without songs, so I learned early on just how important Rhythm guitar is, and after all these years I still get calls to play, those guys that played all the Riffs and Leads got burned out years ago.

Up early this morning ... I was never moved by Les Pauls, it's not for a lack of trying ... I wanted to like them ... but, I think I could sink my teeth into a 335. There's something about the voice of the 335/345/355 that is more expressive to my ear.

Killer playing and tone as always Tom! Hard to pick a favourite between Wired and Blow by Blow, both amazing albums. I haven't heard you mention Tommy Bolin as an influence but I'd imagine you'd be a fan of his work? He had a fearlessness to his playing that few do. I think his playing on Billy Cobham's Spectrum album must have made an impression on Jeff Beck before he recorded Blow by Blow.

I can testify to humidity probs. I moved from Birmingham to Cincinnati last fall. I had never experienced any real setup problems with any of my guitars before. This January both my Thinline and Strat were showing fret sprout, and the necks had moved way out of range. It took about a week to add the moisture back I to them with wet sponges in the cases. Glad to say they both play great after some tweaking.

Tom, thanks for the videos. I look forward to them everyday and often find myself late for my usual responsibilities after picking my guitar up for a “quick minute” and trying to practice something you’re talking about. That quick minute turns into hours and well, you get the idea. Anyways I guess I’d consider myself a low level intermediate player and I find that as I’m progressing, my picking is holding me back. Seems there are a lot of opinions on the best way to hold a pick and how to best anchor or not anchor the palm of your hand on the guitar for the most accurate playing. Just wondering how you do it and what techniques you’ve found to work the best? Thanks again for the tunes.

That's a good tip about winter time furnace outlets too close to guitars. I will move my guitars now. I actually used to live in an awful apartment with one furnace outlet. We would sit and practice songs in front of the furnace outlet because it was also very cold and drafty in the apartment. Every time the furnace came on you could literally hear the guitar go out of tune. Try to do a sustaining chord and you could the heat hear twist the guitar out of tune with the warm air Blowing directly on the guitar. My Gibson 1985 335 dot was more sensitive than my fender 1987 Strat plus, but it affected both.

You mentioned a few vids back that you had to think of something different for the next contest - how about something similar to what you did today? Play a bunch of licks all combined together, and the point would be to list the songs that they're from. You could throw in some really obscure ones that would really test the listener....
    Oh well, just a thought....

Hope you don't mind the counter-point but I (of course me, right?) did in fact allow a guitar to over-humidify. One time the A/C went out for a whole summer and I had a high end acoustic, left in it's case, tuned up, and ignored (I rarely play acoustic). When I pulled it out sometime that summer, the humidity, heat and string tension had bellied the body behind the bridge like the guitar had a tumor! It took a ton of silica gel and cool dehumidified air to get the moisture level back down to 50% and the belly to go away (kids don't try this at home - do it too fast and the wood will bust on ya). I know you're talking 99% electric and all, but I figured in the hopes of saving someone else the same horror that I had upon opening that case, I'd pass it along.

We need the new tee shirts to include Tom's likeness, in cartoon form, and some of the his quotes from the series.

Tom, I admire how your face doesn't twitch when you are playing those tricky licks. I sometimes look like i'm receiving electrical shocks when the fingers get going.

Sick old skool riffin. Love to throw down on some old jams. LOL Guthrie always says he's no fun at parties. Yeah, that white mountain spring fever hit that ass...... Your subconscious knows its spring/summer, time to jam.
