So, if the amount of US born citizens remains constant, but the amount of low skilled immigrants increases, then there will be more people competing for the same amount of job, which means lower wages for everyone. As a European its strange to see Americans complaining all over internet that they cant afford anything any more - rent, groceries etc. compared to the salaries. If you open the borders to millions of low wage workers - guess what happens ?
It's not a globalism / corruption issue. It's a compassion / being selfish issue. And by the looks of it, neither Trump nor Sanders gives a rat's ass about the truly impoverished living in less developed countries.
Maybe Sanders would, he seems to be among the most righteous politicians. But, tbh this is a dilemma that is hard to solve without a price, to open the border or to close it have their own respective pros and cons. What he mentioned is a rational truth, not an irrational phobia against foreigners. I am an immigrant myself, but I see that the age of open-border immigration is coming to an end, this might make many of us hyper-emotional, the left might find this unjust and the right might find this a green light, but we as society must make the most rational yet empathetic decision to both save our future and reduce pain and misery on earth. Automation and outsourcing is killing jobs, especially low-skilled jobs, when more immigrants come in they reduce wages, big firms like that, but this negatively affects lives of the working class and the middle class.
I’ve always assumed that if people were liberal they believed in open borders because it would be racist not to believe so.. This opened my mind very much

I love this guy! He doesn't speak around questions like most politicians do. He also has a clear gameplan that he speaks about very often. Where other politicians will tell you the goal, he explains how he plans on achieving that goal.
+Bryce C He completely avoided the initial question, which was about the moral and philosophical problem of denying desperately poor people entry into a country merely because they were born on the other side of an arbitrary political border. He immediately made that question about the Koch brothers and the "right wing" wanting a lot of low-skilled, low-wage workers and how he is opposed to that because he doesn't like that people are poor and unemployed. That is an impressive political spin, but it is absolutely speaking around the question, just like all politicians do. I mean, this section of the interview is about "global poverty" and Bernie does a great job of saying absolutely nothing about global poverty until the last sentence (although he might have said more in the full interview - I haven't seen the uncut version) where he offers absolutely NO solutions whatsoever. All he offers are utopian goals, devoid of any viable "plans of achieving that goal"--again, just like all politicians. So he is an impressive politician, but he responds with political spin and talking points just like every other candidate.
Alex M The many economic fallacies and moral problems inherent in that policy aside, I wasn't addressing any policy specifically. I was merely commenting in opposition to the OP's idea that he actually answered the interviewers' question here. He did not. He said absolutely nothing substantive about global poverty or open borders. He instead spun the question, as you would expect from any skilled politician, so that he could talk about what he wanted to talk about. I'm not saying that is a good or bad thing, just that he absolutely spoke like any politician would.
Tyler H Respectfully I disagree, I believe he did answer the question correctly to the philosophical intent of the question. The question was on the philosophical level how do you weight it (Foreign Aid, Poverty.. etc) He weighs it on the fact that his first obligation is to first serve the citizens of the united states before others. He already established that he wanted a nation state, so being America, however on a philosophical level he stated that he will serve the united states citizens before anyone else. Philosophically thats his intent, to serve Americans first because we live in America and being the president of the U.S. you should represent your citizens. Now down below me I see a comment stating that pathway to citizenship and open borders are 2 different things which is entirely true. With a pathway to citizenship, that would allow the immigrants he was talking about to become citizens, pay taxes, and then they would get those same rights as other Americans because they're an American. I see here now that Bernie did vote Yes on the DREAM act which is fast track to citizenship. I think the problem was in the questions asked in the video which paints an unclear picture of his actual intent. The question was making America open borders, which is a very extreme proposal which Bernie then stated is not his intent. Then they jumped into the philosophical question; however the more moderate approach (pathway to citizenship) wasn't mentioned trailing the extreme proposal of open borders. So it didn't really address his views very well. He supports a pathway to citizenship proposal, which would then help these immigrants become naturalized citizens. Citizens is the priority to Bernie. Also the question was how he weighs foreign aid and poverty etc. now this question wasn't statistical and addressing the actual global poverty now just how he weighs his policies. He stated that the top 1% in the global economy own more than the 99% below, and that making jobs in foreign countries is a must. Thats how he weighs his foreign aid policies and in the global poverty rates. In the end I believe his statement was a direct assessment of the open borders policy which would degrade the american workers by giving off our jobs too easily to others. That's the philosophical weighing system he is using, and he realizes that an open border would be disastrous to American jobs which he has denounced before, letting American jobs go to other countries where they can pay less than here, only in this situation an open border would allow those jobs to take place here for cheap.
Open borders a right-wing idea? Really? And then he goes on to say that mass immigration would make Americans poorer, like exactly what republicans have been saying for years. I’m not even taking a side on the issue, I just think it’s amazing that he somehow construed the right-wing as being in favor of open borders.
The Koch brothers and numerous people on the libertarian "right" (if you consider capitalist right wing) are for open borders, and have been for a while. This is why Trump and Bannon use the word "globalist", because it's not just leftists pushing for open borders. The Koch brothers are globalists, and on the issue of immigration they are no different from Soros.
@@bernkbestgirl Actually, there's an important difference between globalism and globalization. Libertarians support globalization, the tearing down of barriers that stifle trade and immigration and free movement. Globalism on the other hand is a movement toward planning the economy and laws on a global basis instead of a country by country basis (if I understand right). Even libertarians mix the terms up sometimes. And libertarians, despite what some people try to claim aren't really right or left wing. I don't know much about the Koch brothers.
We should lock up those Marxists and woke people. Stick em in jail like Joe McCarthy did. Bring back the Red Scare, COINTELPRO, and Operation Mockingbird. Freedumb.

He's right, we need to help the countries these economic refugees are coming from, not simply tell everyone they can go live somewhere that (sorta) has it figured out. That's just unsustainable
What he's trying to say is "Why make poor people poorer by allowing more poor people to come to America, without proper citizenship of course, and allowing rich people to get richer to the already corrupted wealth inequality of the nation?." In other words "You're making rich people richer if America is just one big sweatshop of poor workers." He's not saying, "Immigrants should stay the F out of America because we don't want you here." Whatever the case, I think he came off sounding like a far right nationalist instead of left wing socialist by the wording of his argument and I guess he so far changed his views about this matter. Either way, he really thinks outside the box, something most politicians are afraid to do.
he was never cool and I also didn't expect much integrity from someone who has not worked an honest job in his life and preaches socialism and fight the power while owning 3 houses and what but remember kids "FIGHT THE POWER" (does not include government power)

Thank you Bernie. We can barely compete with them. At the moment I get paid 6 dollars an hour. And I work 70 hours every week. And still have to compete against immigrants who accept 5 dollars. There are so many unemployed. Its not that we are against Mexicans or immigrants. We just can't compete for wages anymore.
Bernie doesnt mind who immigrates, as long as there is some kind of limit on the amount and how easy it is. Trump doesnt want Muslims to immigrate and wants to build a border wall.
How? When did Bernie Sanders ever propose an idea that disregards civil liberties? If you actually do your background research on him, you'll know he never did, and he always been a vocal opponent of spying and the PATRIOT Act. Bernie just believes in everyone working together and a pro-people government. Hillary and Trump disregard the first amendment and believe in mass surveillance. Trump also believes the government can seize property at any time and believes in opening libel laws.
Surprising wisdom from Bernie here. I maybe disagree with his socialism, but I do give him credit for his willingness to acknowledge that America does indeed exist as a nation and has the right to preserve itself. That's more than one can say about any other Democrat in the primaries this year.
if he does why did he raise his hand during the last debate when all the candidates were asked if they support open borders and free healthcare to illegal immigrants
And that's why the Dems are going to lose the election. Not just because of this one issue, but because they have embraced the far left platform as a United front and left majority of the voters behind. Shame.
Matt M. His words got taken out of context by the liberal media, he was saying that the Mexican government has an unemployment problem and that they encourage their unemployed people and people who are in jails there to move to the US since we give them so many free benefits. That is 100% correct. It's a serious problem and if you choose to ignore it you're part of the problem. Our country doesn't have the money to support an open border unfortunately. Remember that Trump the next day himself said that he has no hate toward Latino individuals, he was just making a point about the policies of the Mexican government. But of course, you're never going to hear that reported in the liberal news.
We seemed to have given up on global mutual aid and use accelerated immigration as a band aid fix for everything. You can't have a healthy social service system with open borders

We need borders so national governments can pass laws that suit the culture and traditions of their own countries. I would be great to be able to travel freely and settle anywhere we choose but first we would need to learn how to respect the people who are already there.
If you raise the minimum wage to $15, companies will just cut their staff and give those left the responsibility of all the workers they cut. All those unemployed workers will then try to get another minimum wage job, but they'll find it is now much harder to do, and it will only get even harder as automation slowly steals more jobs. Lots of major companies are already doing this without the wage increase. While people like Bernie will follow their moral compass, corporations won't. They'll follow the dollar, like they always have, and it will lead to more unemployment and cut hours. They will not sacrifice their profits for the good of the country. It's not in their nature.

When you raise the wage of workers, what do you think they will do with that money, horde it in their matresses or go out and spend it creating more jobs?
"Black youth unemployment is over 50%, we need to get these kids jobs" - "I want to raise the minimum wage to 15 bucks an hour." The same guy just said these two things and wasn't joking.
Bernie is so off the ball here. No Republican ever considered open borders, the question is not about globalization or neoliberalism but the fact it is on business interests to not give a path to citizenship to immigrants who lived here for decades, pay taxes and have no criminal history so they can't unionize or defend themselves from exploitation. They live here, they are American citizens but with less rights than the people born here so fixing their situation shouldn't be grouped together with unrelated issues. This is his weak spot that through his career he was coming from a "immigrants steal American jobs" view and often voted against immigrant rights. I hope he had evolved on these views ever since. He at best comes out clumsy on immigration issues or straight out of line with his equal rights views.
Much simpler, enforce the law. If you don't at least have a green card, you cannot work in the U.S., period. You can be a tourist, you can't take a job. The IRS knows who is working illegally in the U.S. by the duplicate and phony social security numbers. Heavy fines for those who employ illegals would work much better than a wall; most illegal immigrants arrive legally on a tourist visa and then just stick around after it expires.
He is consistent. Literally nobody anywhere is asking for open borders, and if you listen to his explanation it makes a lot of sense. No border = no nation-state.
@The Life Analyst 1. Decriminalizing is not the same as "whoops there's no border anymore" 2. He wants everyone to have free healthcare 3. @The Life Analyst im gonna put it simple what should be done. papers for everyone already here. police enforced immigration. end to all sanctuary cities.
Personally if I were in charge I'd have special economic zones where there is no minimum wage. All the immigrants can go there. It will essentially be open borders. This will allow American companies to be very profitable. Second is to tax these companies for using the special economic zone. Take those taxes and use it to help America's poor to find jobs.
My opinion on open borders follows the idea that we should not make criminals. If an act doesn't victimize another, its not justifiable to use violence against that person. Ever. No matter how you string it and word it. Example. If someone walks across the border, I don't think the government has any right to remove them UNLESS they victimize another person in some way. If theyre forcefully brought over, they shouldn't be removed either unless thats their will. The person who forced them across the border should face the harshest of punishments.

Yes.
He answered the point completely! The moral obligation of our government is to our citizens and the world!
delon a
sarcasm? I hope?
Alex M
The many economic fallacies and moral problems inherent in that policy aside, I wasn't addressing any policy specifically.
Ah, the old Bernie. The Bernie that didn’t support mass immigration and woke nonsense. I miss the old Bernie Sanders.

The Koch brothers aren’t right wing, they support any side that benefits them
@@bernkbestgirl Actually, there's an important difference between globalism and globalization. Libertarians support globalization, the tearing down of barriers that stifle trade and immigration and free movement.
Globalism on the other hand is a movement toward planning the economy and laws on a global basis instead of a country by country basis (if I understand right). Even libertarians mix the terms up sometimes.

@The Life Analyst he's been pandering lately. its such a turnoff. it seems like he doesn't want to say he's against open borders as if it were to hurt his votes. he's costing himself more votes in the process. he keeps making emotional statements. "tearing babys from arms". but when watching this video, his theory is phenom. if he were to address sanctuary cities while proposing pathway to citizenship like he should be doing imo he'd get allot more support. because imo that is moderate
***** I'm certainly not a Republican! I did say I'd tax these companies and the tax revenue would help the poor.
