OSVR has really upped my opinion of Razer. I've always thought of Razer as very proprietary, having the hardware open source is a very good idea, and will help advance the industry. Props.
Holy shit a VR headset with the ability to change lenses for those who are far or near sighted is going to be a HUGE breaker in the VR industry. They are going to make millions with that feature intergrated into VR machines.
I tried out the OSVR and here are my thoughts on the experience. The screen resolution is too low as such a close range and it was pixelated. The lag present when moving my head was terrible and I felt a bit motion sick in only a couple of minutes. The adjustable lens system worked great for me and helped to clear up and focus the image. Overall it wasn't a terrible experience but, until the lag issues are sorted out I would not use it. I talked to the hardware engineer helping with the project and he agreed and added that they are working on the lag issues but, a higher res screen is not in the works as of now. Then again being that it is open source a company could make higher res screens. Finally I believe he said they are looking for a summer release and a 199 price point. Thanks Linus for your coverage.
It's really neat to see Razor making this VR open source. Just take a look at the Raspberry Pi, Arduino, etc.. and what amazing things the open source community is doing with them. I hope it kicks off well
apparently kinect is a resource hog even on its own, coding in a vr headset would make it even harder for the xbone to produce acceptable framerates. It can probably work with some indies that use simpler graphics, but not with AAAs
I really hope, that OSVR is getting huge, because competition is never bad. That said, I'm happy about everything that keeps facebook out of my life . . .
I hope it dies. I'm not an Occulus fanboy or anything, I've just read the licensing agreement. Anything developed by the community to work with it becomes owned by Razor, and can only be distributed or sold by them. They're just trying to trick the community into working for them for free.
Jochen Klein The only way I can see them changing this is if it was an unintentional side effect of the verbiage they used in the agreement. It looks intentional to me though. The other thing that screams shady to me is the fact that Razor had Linus tell us that they don't own OSVR, when the agreement clearly states they do. Even the website proper only mentions Razor as a partner, and not even at the top of the list...
I'm all for an open source VR project that's also free (as in freedom). That's actually why I went to their site and read the agreement. I'm looking to start a game studio in the near future and want to dive into VR, so this sounded like a perfect fit considering there are things I'd like improved upon in current designs. The fact that they're misinforming customers and hiding their true intentions in legalese has me hoping another, better open source project comes along.
The OSVR is a great idea by razer because it will force competition which will bring innovation. And I hope people will try this out and bring great idea's to the table.
I didn't think this video met linustechtips' standards, because i personally still don't know what excactly the nabu and osvr thing are. I heard you say something about an oled display, but you didn't go into depth on that, and also didn't make it clear what level of functionality the osvr has. Not trying to bash you but just hoping you'll go a bit more in depth next time. Keep up the videos though!
Are you guys going to be going over the Wearhaus Arc at CES? I'd love to see what you guys think about them because it's impossible to demo them right now!
If it ends up being the lower price point then it defiantly will be since it sounds like it will have most of the fit bit functions for much less. I own a gear s and mostly only use it for the step tracker but the hands free voice texting and text read outs while driving are what make it worth it for me.
if the knob underneath really are for people with glasses... Then I will make love with Razer. Because that's the only thing stopping me from getting the Oculus when it's released.
If you want something cheaper, that does the same things basically (probably not as good looking though) check out the Xoimi miband, it costs about 18 bucks on chinese shipping sides like tinydeal. It uses 3 led's at the front but there's color mixing so you can get everything inbetween RGB. You install the modded APK and you can setup a vibration pattern and any color for each specific app on your phone.
VR gaming can not be used with keyboard and mouce, nor with a controller. It need to be used with some sort of fake gun/sword/whatever and something to walk on. (or like in SAO.. I think. Never seen it, but I heard they have some sort of VR headset and the signals from their brain do not go to their body, so they can't move, but the machine picks it up so they can move in the game or something like that.)
There's no reason for them not to make one except the (false) presumption that no-one would buy one. To remedy that, hit them at: store.phantom.glass/contact-us
I companies like unity and epic integrate osvr in their engines. It will be some serious competition against the oculus rift. As those engines are usually used by indie developers. Now all we need is a solid price of 250-350 dollars and we are golden. Would love to here from some indie developers. I am working on an small game project at the moment and am waiting for virtual reality to go absolutely apeshit. And just wrecks the way we use our monitors.
I don't know what camera/video correction is going on, but every time Linus slightly moves it makes the video moves unnecessarily. Dunno what that's about.
Does that mean VR unit will be cheaper? Are Razor taking profit from this headset or is it literally a close manufacturer cost? Obviously they'll take a cut somewhere. But what will the pricing be affected by this?
According to the licensing agreement, Razor *owns* OSVR, and they're also the only ones allowed to sell it or anything made to work with it. So yes, they're planning to profit off of this heavily
:Lets get Thalmic Labs to design a controller for VR and another company to design a omni-directional treadmill and we have our selves a BOSS virtual system to play around with.
Ooah! A Razer wearable! not sure if the gamers will ever need it for health purposes or social feed purposes coz you know, but maybe it might be applicable for unlocking trophies or receiving hate mails or afk reports.
What if you attached two of those razer things to each wrist and used them as vibration motors while gaming? Like how console peasants have vibration controllers. Just a bit of tactile feedback.
if razer developed their own vr headset they could probably make gloves for motion tracking on the same system that they can design to integrate well with the headset and sell the gloves as their own product to make money.
I love how Linus will say his mind no matter if it insults a company even if they right infront of him!
Yeah, he doesn't put on a face for company's. Hes non biased and will say whats right, and whats wrong.
***** He's not non-biased.
***** I agree and I think thats very good to be honest to his viewers instead of sugarcoating it to possibly get sponsors.
Völundr Frey When it comes to reviewing a product hes not gonna lie and make it sound better then it actually is just because he likes the product.
***** Sure, but that is not the same thing as being non-biased.
"I don't have many friends with the same wearable as me"
"In fact I don't have many friends at all"
Right in the feels.
Whats up with the camera? Warp stabilizer?
like he has the camera attached to his waist
It looks like it's stabilizing off of him rather than the background.
*****
that's not his waist...
I'm looking at it and it seems to be..tracking his head? May have been accidentally applied in post. Fatigued crew perhaps.
Warp drive. :O
Man Razer is a genius company at selling cheap prices of plastic for expensive prices.
and they work great too =)
Cough Apple cough
OSVR has really upped my opinion of Razer. I've always thought of Razer as very proprietary, having the hardware open source is a very good idea, and will help advance the industry. Props.
I still think last year's Project Christine was miles better, than anything Razer came up with this year in terms of innovation.
Holy shit a VR headset with the ability to change lenses for those who are far or near sighted is going to be a HUGE breaker in the VR industry. They are going to make millions with that feature intergrated into VR machines.
GOOD WORK LINUSTEAM!!!
Thanks Linus Team!

Looking forward to the future of OSVR. :)
It's really neat to see Razor making this VR open source. Just take a look at the Raspberry Pi, Arduino, etc.. and what amazing things the open source community is doing with them. I hope it kicks off well
Read their licensing agreement, they want you to work for free
I'm waiting for Razer to release their Razer Nabe and Razer Cibai
Razer Kaninabu~
LOL you guys Malaysian? haha!
***** ?
could be Singaporean. Interesting point to note, ming liang is Singaporean, pretty sure he is trolling with the razer Nabu name
Malaysian here
Ahahah
OSVR Could be coded to be used on console. Imagine using kinect and vr headset together
I can imagine a lot of broken things in the living room and a lot of screaming.
I doubt your going to get the 70fps minimum needed for comfortable vr
Tmohas Danktrain Well, maybe console manufacturers start to throw in some better hardware. If the gamers demand it.
People have already done that with the pc kinect version
apparently kinect is a resource hog even on its own, coding in a vr headset would make it even harder for the xbone to produce acceptable framerates. It can probably work with some indies that use simpler graphics, but not with AAAs

This actually worrys me a bit ... I hope they change this, because it could really take off if it was truely opne source
Jochen Klein The only way I can see them changing this is if it was an unintentional side effect of the verbiage they used in the agreement. It looks intentional to me though. I think we will have to wait and see about this for now. I'm keeping an eye on this thing because it could be something great.

I like that they made that VR thing open source.
Dude! You got a lot of subscribers as friends!
Razer has been going at it, this CES
I love the way he says "I don't have many friends at all" so subtly lol
Open Source for the win!
"I don't have any friends" -Linus
I cry everytiem
$50 for 3 leds that tell you that you have a message? That must be the laziest overpriced "gadget" I have ever seen.
People with money will always buy shit.
I find my phone distracting enough without something attached to my wrist. No thanks.
It does track fitness, and will be $20 for razer insiders for a limited time.
that's razer for you
Grey Tiger
I suggest you do not purchase one then, since this product isn't made for you.
what is that little square box on the mic called?
i wanted to know what it is called... i see it on everything like tv and stuff but dont know what its called...
Its called.... Its called.... The little square box
sniperlif3 LOL thanks alot mate!
thats exactly what i wanted to hear!
***** ohh ok, but that isnt wireless..
there is blates a cable coming out of it...
The OSVR is a great idea by razer because it will force competition which will bring innovation. And I hope people will try this out and bring great idea's to the table.

I have the Nabu X and it's awesome!
does it work with an ipod 5?
+Ari Whitehead it would as long as it supports Bluetooth and u can download the Razer Nabu App
+Marco Jim is it worth it
iFlasHu well mine broke after less than a week sooooo
If it ends up being the lower price point then it defiantly will be since it sounds like it will have most of the fit bit functions for much less. I own a gear s and mostly only use it for the step tracker but the hands free voice texting and text read outs while driving are what make it worth it for me.
I didn't know about the vr headset, but I do really enjoy flight and space sims and vr is really interesting to me.
The Nabu X goes into the band almost exactly the same way as a fit bit. and the led's are very similar too. i wonder where they got the idea 0.o
They should built in a little button in the nabu to skip music or something. Then i would totally buy this thing.
Can you put all the CES videos in a playlist?
I just realized VR would be awesome in a racing game
I can't justify spending $35 for a screen protector when it isn't that much more to just replace your screen
Great camera guy is great.
You don't need manny friend. A few is okay if you can trust them and have a good time with them
I really hope they release the Naboo: Bombad Edition
Wow, a vibrating wrist band with 3 LEDs on it. Incredible.
This facetracking camera shit is really making me nauseous
if the knob underneath really are for people with glasses...
Then I will make love with Razer. Because that's the only thing stopping me from getting the Oculus when it's released.
I'll be your friend, Linus.
OSVR is a big gamechanger in my opinion.
Read their licensing agreement. It's a scam to trick you into working for them for free.
Razer booth but no "traditional" peripherals and some open source stuff, wow this amazes me :P
Woah, the video is tracking linus' head.
I saw that too. It was so weird.
The camera wobbled a LOT when filming Linus.
camera man was crying cause Linus has no friends
Nice Video
Did anyone else notice how the camera appears to be moving in direct response to Linus's head movements?
More open source hardware please!

I wish Phantom Glass had screens for the Droid Turbo...
There's no reason for them not to make one except the (false) presumption that no-one would buy one. To remedy that, hit them at: store.phantom.glass/contact-us
Boxing games will be so fantastic in vr
it's ok Linus, i can be your friend. And wear the same wearable as you.
The Nabu x is down to $16 USD now on Amazon
awww I'll be your friend Linus
Ill be your friend Linus!
is the camera attached to Linus or something??

When will there be a virtual reality design?
"In fact I don't have many friends at all" I fucking broke XD
Does that mean VR unit will be cheaper? Are Razor taking profit from this headset or is it literally a close manufacturer cost? Obviously they'll take a cut somewhere. But what will the pricing be affected by this?

Linus When did you get your Pebble?
OSVR is nice. More competition for oculus is never a bad thing.
:Lets get Thalmic Labs to design a controller for VR and another company to design a omni-directional treadmill and we have our selves a BOSS virtual system to play around with.
The stabilization on this video is making me jizzy
Ooah! A Razer wearable! not sure if the gamers will ever need it for health purposes or social feed purposes coz you know, but maybe it might be applicable for unlocking trophies or receiving hate mails or afk reports.
Confused about the Nabu X. It seems like it does exactly what your phone already does, no?
Why is he actually using his iPhone again? Wasn't the DroidTurbo his new daily driver?
What's with the weird camera motion tracking? It's really distracting, to me at least.
Linus, You're super cool.
So cool
I will be getting this.
You're welcome.
Can you make a review of the H440 razer edition chassi? Would be awesome =)
Feels like cameraman had some shots before his did this...
Naboo is my favorite Gungan empire.
I'll be your friend Linus
OSVR has go a long way to go to catch up to oculus.
I almost thought he was saying you could download the headset itself...
I still want Project Christine.
I'll be your friend Linus :D
WERE YOUR FRIENDS!
Can you review the Razer Seiren ?
Why would people buy a Nabu X for 49.99 when you are get a miband with the exactly same function (they have color mixing) for around 10?
linus... i wanna be your friend ;_;
GAHH that intro is so loud!!
you guys need to work on audio levels. I have to mute the intro/add as it is so loud.
cool nice tech :)
What if you attached two of those razer things to each wrist and used them as vibration motors while gaming? Like how console peasants have vibration controllers. Just a bit of tactile feedback.
haha. but I see what you mean. hmm, suppose if you have blutooth on your PC and can create the software, sure. anything is possible with code :P
They need 1600p screens.
I dont care if I cant see the pixels with that tiny of a screen, I want it!
hey linus every year at CES u wearing same shirt or similar ones :)
HOLY SHIT!!! A WRISTBAND THAT HAS LIGHTS!!! BEST OF CES 2015 LOLOLOLOLOLOLLOLOLOLOLOLOL................. Kappa
Cheap and Razer? Never heard those two words together before.
Vibration Motor? I know of only one use for this item
Get some floor coverage, plz.
if razer developed their own vr headset they could probably make gloves for motion tracking on the same system that they can design to integrate well with the headset and sell the gloves as their own product to make money.
they pretty much took a fitbit, slapped a razer sticker on it and called it their own
20 dollars, can't go wrong with that + open platform for development.
What about this vs. the Jawbone Up? It looks kinda similar...
