It’s funny people are concerned about her adapting to a new place. But whales are moved between parks all the time. Weird how no one is concerned about that. And no one cared she was taken away in the first place. No one is planning to drop her somewhere to fend for herself. This whale has been in that awful too small tank longer than I have been alive. Just disgusting.
If I kept you in a box with adequate food and medical care and no contact with other humans you would live for a long time, but you would be driven insane. Longevity is no indication of well being
I feel so sorry for all animals in captivity, unless they are trying to help them for a short time and release! That owner should spend the rest of his life in captivity!
Her trainer probably made easy money for "taking such great care" of this poor lolita. It's sickening she says lolita was so well taken care of for 50 years in captivity, trapped in a public pool.
After all this time of signing petitions and sending emails, I am so glad to see this finally happen. And to those that day "She won't make it". Oh yes she will, the plan is to have her sent to a seaside sanctuary where she can be free but still be monitored and rehabilitated. Plus I highly doubt they're gonna release her without tagging her either so they can track her.
Shame on you Miami Seaquarium for doing this to her. For keeping her prisoner for over 50 years, and never letting her taste the freedom of the ocean, all so you can profit off her back, and keep her confined to your prison. Anyone that supports Miami Seaquarium, Seaworld or any other place of captivity is to blame. People reading this please stop giving them your dollars. I am so sorry Toki, we tried so hard to save you. 💔
Instead of funding commercial space travel, I wish some of these billionaires could this as their passion project instead. Help to retire & rehab these captive orca to whale sanctuaries - at least the ones that were captured in the wild that have known family pods to reunite with once they are rehabbed?
This is only going to end up like Keiko. :-( If an animal has been kept in captivity for such a long time, then there's no way they'll survive on their own in the world. Hence, they should remain in captivity.
elsa the lion was set free after being years in captivity and did fine there are other dolphins to like that but she will stay in a seapen if nothing goes right
Lolita has already recently suffered multiple health issues, going back to the wild and being introduced to pollution in pungent sound would easily kill her. Keikos release was different, he was only young at the time of his release (27 I believe) Keiko always sought out human company and died only after 2 years. With Lolita’s age, health issues and how long she’s been in that pool, shes only going to last a few months at the max. Sending her to SeaWorld Orlando is a much better outcome for her, she has space and top notch care.
People are overlooking a critical point. Proximity to Lolita could be detrimental to the wild population. She could carry pathogens for which the wild killer whales have no immunity.
Was she taken way from her family initially? Is she J, K, or L Pod? Recently, a pod of orcas was spotted and one of the orcas had a tag and was identified as a released orca from one of these dolphin jails.
@@HeavensOfAlakye There is no evidence that L25 is her mother. It should be easy to prove or disprove. Collect a breath sample from L25. Extract the DNA and compare it to lolita.
50 in captivity is amazing but freeing her in the wild is a serious concern because how sure they are if she can hunt alone? She grown up without a Pod
Sadly she can't survive the wild environment. She probably lost her instinct for hunting. I hope she will survive and won't become the food for other orcas.
Great for her to released but this is like putting you grandparents in a home when their too much trouble for you. The whale is getting older and less profitable so you pretend you care and release her so she isn’t your problem anymore.
Free willy is a movie and real world is far away from Hollywood movies. Lolita is an old orca that recently had health issues. She's not the best candidate to be moved across the country to a complete different environment for her... A much more viable option would be transfer her to SeaWorld Orlando. It would only take a few months to do the movement and she would be living in a bigger place even being introduced to a pod plus just need a few hours of transportation for her and much less money than this project... But of course that would not be accepted by some people thanks to blackfish
I agree with you. She's too old for this journey, too used to humans for survival, plus She's had the health issues as mentioned. Why put this whale through this? It's cruel. It's a death sentence for her. She hadn't touched her home waters since she was 4 years old back in the 60s early 1970s. She won't fare well, let alone last very long. Why couldn't they have saved Keiko's old tank in Oregon for future orcas like Lolita? The other best option would be to fly her to Sea World San Diego where she could live with Corky who is close to her age and is closest to her kin because Corky is a Northern resident killer whale and she probably would get along very well with Lolita. California stupidity forbids any other tranfers of killer whales. They should overturn that law. Lolita would make a great companion for Lolita. Sea World Orlando doesn't have her kin. They have all Icelandic orcas with the exception of Malia who is 25%Bigg's transiet and 75% Icelandic orca mix.
Actually she's gonna be sent to a seaside sanctuary. Of course people know she's not gonna survive in the ocean right away, so she's gotta be rehabilitated. It'll be much better for her at an actual sanctuary.
@@Starbright-385 She could easily live another 35 years she is not too old her mother who is still alive is 98. Keiko's release was a failure because they never found his pod and he loved his humans. He would seek them out. He died alone and it was sad. They forced him into the wild when he should've lived out the remainder of his life in human care in his bay pen. The wild orcas probably viewed him as an odd outsider and ignored him. I hope it fares well for her and not end up as another failure. This sea water pen is a completely different environment than her own. Hopefully her immune system will be strong enough to take to it.
