I totally love the Albert Brooks performance. Decades of playing schmucks and goofballs, and here he comes with a believable--totally--evil and dangerous SOB. It's not even like the same guy. Fine performance!
Some of those "schmucks" were pretty messed up guys if you go back and watch again. But I get what you mean. It works because it's against type, one of the better instances of that.
What I found interesting about the character was how scarily personal he was. He could have quite easily obtained a gun but for every person he attacks, he chose to carry it out face-to-face with and up close.
One of the scariest parts of Al Brooks playing a villain is how easily believable and reassuring he is when he says “it’s ok. It’s alright. It’s done. No more pain” as he’s killing you.
Love that shot at 2:36 where you just see their shadows. You’re not completely sure who got the upper hand until you see the shadow of the Driver’s gloves hanging out of his back pocket.
That is an interesting take. I also wonder if the smiles are a common admiration, and realization of their fates. I also feel like there is some sorrow in Bernies expression at 0:43 when the driver sits down and is noticeably weary from the struggles he's faced,. This fits with the theme of them both being 'scorpions' who are doomed to fight to the death. They seems to both realize it.
Both were mistaken if they believed they had the upper hand. I like the ending but the only reason Driver is alive is where Bernie put his blade and I don't know that I buy that for such a blade obsessed character he wouldn't have got him where it would kill or just took him from behind while he opened the trunk or was handling the money. Straight to the kidney and he wouldn't survive or to the liver either one.
I love how beautifully arrogant Bernie is. The Driver has just rammed Ron Perlman off the road and drowned him in the sea; and that's after stomping someone's head until it breaks open like an easter egg.
It's really fantastic. The cut between both men sitting, knowing they are about to face the unavoidable, and the confrontation in the parking lot. With the music added on top, with the framing and lighting, its undeniably fantastic, ambient, and foretelling. Favorite scene of the movie.
What a perfect ending to a brilliantly written arc. Driver’s psychotic nature makes him truly believe that he is a real hero, only to contrast with his brutality. I just love this scene. It fits with the whole "Frog and Scorpion" tale in the movie. The frogs are good guys and the scorpions are the bad ones. It's just that way "because of their nature". These are both bad dudes, who have problems of their own and all they want to do is just leave their bad lives behind for better ones. But they're scorpions, they can't, it's just really not who they are. That's why they both stab each other, it's just what their nature was telling them to do and they followed through. The Driver saw this, and realized he was gonna get stabbed by Bernie, exactly why he let him and why he just stabbed him right back. Not only that this is what the Driver(Ryan Gossling) wanted all along: The girl is safe, you're out of this bullshit, and most of all you got proper vengeance on those who wronged you and the one's you loved. The scorpion who was still the hero at least when it counted.
It's my interpretation that the Driver is the frog. He's surrounded by all these scorpions where he just wanted to be left well enough alone. Heck, he literally has a scorpion on his back
The frog/scorpion thing was a total last minute addition. The scorpion on the jacket was just too look cool. When filming the phone scene between Driver and Bernie, Gosling suddenly mentioned the idea of putting it in the scene and they did. Refn didn't plot it as symbolism throughout (in fact his two latest films have suffered because of really blatant and loaded symbolism).
BERNIE: *extends hand* DRIVER: "My hands are a little dirty." BERNIE: "So are mine." There's no frog in this clip. Driver fantasizes about becoming a frog. Tries to become a frog. And then he realizes that he can't become a frog. Because it's not a choice. He's not a frog. He is a scorpion. And Bernie is a scorpion. They are what they are. That's why they do what they do. That's why we see the two shadows struggling against each other in the final fight. These are both bad guys. But at the end, one of them is changed. Upgraded to an anti-hero.

Finally found this scene! It is best scene in the whole movie IMO. It really represents the sacrifice Driver is ready to do for his feelings against Irene. Leaving them behind for their own safety and giving them a chance. This really shows what he felt on them. Beautiful scene overall and the soundtrack is also great. I've always loved this scene particularly. I know we all can identify ourselves in this situation once in a life, giving up someone for their own good, for their better future and for their joy. So it really is not just for the character, but for all of us.

Even years after seeing this movie and scene, I come back because this scene is quite meaningful and beautiful in the end.
Such an underrated film, personally its one of my most favourite films simply because I love the feel it give and the sound tracks are done by awesome artists.
Before I saw it I thought it was literally a movie where he drives the whole time. I left loving it. The acting, the vibes and the music had me obsessed. My wife goes eh that was weird. I was like what that was amazing. She doesn't look for the stuff I look for. The look, the music. It's all matters
Dude, Drive is anything but underrated It is basically a cultural phenomenon that kickstarted the whole "80-s nostalgia" with Hotline Miami, synthwave, neon lights and all that stuff Driver is aslo probably the most popular Ryan's role
I love the smirk Driver gives when Bernie says “Come on” and nods towards the parking lot, because he knows he’s gonna do something and he’s just resigned to it at this point. Great film. One of the few adaptations I can confidently say is better than the book.
We're all Benicio -- just like the Driver stepped in, for a moment, into the role of Benicio's dad, over the course of the movie he provides a model of heroism for the audience. The ideal dad, the ideal hero, some one we can aspire to. Proof? At the end of the movie, he challenges us to a staring contest. Just like the Benicio.
Driver's primary interest wasn't romantic, so people disappointed that he doesn't "get the girl," are looking at it wrong. Driver is a real-life criminal who also plays criminals onscreen as a stunt driver. His primary wish is to be a hero, not just onscreen but in real life. To be somebody who helps innocent people, and not just people who hurt and steal and kill. The triumph, at the end, is that even though he is unsuccesful in saving Standard, he is able to get Irene and her child out from under his mistakes. He is able to protect them from the things he has done by running away. If he survives, he will probably need to seek a new identity. Even if he dies soon, though, it will be knowing that he did something good. Driver isn't a romantic meet-cute. It's a story of redemtpion.
I believe Drive evokes strong emotion because people instinctively sense that it represents the last breaths of a way of life that can no longer exist. Throughout all of history, you could ride off into the sunset like Shane on his horse, or the Driver, in his car, and escape the life you had. In the age of internet connected smartphones filming and tracking every one at all times, there is nowhere to run to where your past won't follow you. Being able to disappear into the cityscape like the Driver is a liberty that is gone forever. I think this is what causes a sense of nostalgia to come over me when I watch, or reflect on, the film.

This scene is so damn good. Bernie and driver look at each other almost in admiration because they both know they are going to try and kill one another. Driver leaves wounded and will have to watch his back for life as he leaves behind the money and Bernies corpse for the his cronies to find.
Love Driver's little smile there (@ around 2:22)-- he knows what's about to happen, Bernie. Also, that sound the knife makes as he yanks it out of himself.... *shudders*. Anyway, just an all around great scene. I love the music (other composers would have some kind of tense, action-y bullshit, but this is actually the same song playing when Driver and Irene kissed and I think the best soundtracks do things you don't expect) and that's some great editing and acting, too. I love the focus on Driver's shadow too for reasons I can't really articulate. Great movie in general and one of my favorites for sure. One problem though--it bothers me that there's no "blood" on his skin when he's lying back against the car.... weird detail to miss and kinda messes with the suspension of disbelief for me.
I really love how the main character was smart enough to let the guy stab him first so he can let the dude who just stabbed him get distracted by stabbing him in a fatal area
The smile he gives off at the table said he knew it and wanted to see what the guy would do if a man smiles like that at you across the table after you said he's going to look over the shoulder for the rest of his life then that guy knows or plans on not living and possibly taking him with him which is why he stabbed that dude back 😂😂😂 he was waiting and knowing what is going to happen the second he goes to the trunk
what's sad is the amount of people thinking this was about driving and cars and hated the movie. hopefully they returned later to see the actual plot and get it.
The only thing I disagree with in this scene is, how ON EARTH do you turn your back to a certified killer like that guy. He would’ve never left my sight. And he most DEFINITELY would not have been walking behind me. But, this is one of my absolute favorite movies. Leave Fast & Furious for the mouth breathers.
Man what a movie Drive was and it's one of my top 5 favorites of all time. Of course the ending was very sad when Driver couldn't stay in L.A. anymore after the ''paying debt'' screw up he had to deal with because of Bernie and other bad guys who planned the assassination on him and the close to him like Irene. Still everything in it was great especially the song A Real Hero and the acting of Ryan Gosling even Carey Mulligan, Bryan Canston, Ron Pearlman and Albert Brooks (as really scary he was as Bernie.)
You can always rely on a comic actor to execute a serious performance, because a) comedy is harder, and b) deep down, all the best comedians are ferociously angry
Out of all the places the guy could stab him he goes for the gut, if he went for the throat he would probably have survived due to bloodloss and shock incapacitating the Driver.
Guy underestimated wrong guy thought the dude wouldn't stab him back probably use to stabbing someone and the guy is in so much pain or shock he's focused on wounds but the drive is different he let the dude get him first to show him how to one stab kill someone
One of the best endings of all time…it’s the smile Gosling gives because HE KMOWS what’s coming and he knows he deserved it but at the same time so did Brookes character
Fun fact: In this scene, we can see the driver is not dead because of him blinking his eyes at the last moment. He is alive, but just like the tales of the frog and scorpion, he lost his "frog" to his own nature. In contrast, in Bladerunner 2049, his character replicant (android) officer K, dies at the end of the film with his eyes open. Eyes in that film often symbolize true humanity, so we can say that he died as a real human being and the real hero.
I'd like to take a moment to point out the car the Driver uses in this movie. This movie was clearly set in contemporary Los Angeles (noting all the ordinary city cars you'd see present day) whilst Ryan Gosling drives a classic Chevy. His character in of itself is strange and socially awkward and he doesn't seem to fit in very well with everyone else. His car also doesn't fit in with other cars, and unlike some classic cars like a Chevelle or a Mustang which are praised for being different, his car is a Malibu. Malibus as far as I know were pretty overlooked when this movie debuted and I believe still aren't sought after like some other vehicles. I thought his choice of vehicle in this movie was a nice touch.
Unusual (and refreshing) that the final boss that the two Gentile lovers must overcome is a Jewish usurer. The writer Amini is a Persian no less! At least one Jewish producer so I guess it's a Kosher film. The ethnic semiotics is fascinating. There's always a subtext to be read for those who have eyes to see it but I'm still surprised to see this one got past the gatekeeper. Great film.
People think driver died. But he didnt. Those who enjoy reading this was based of a book of the same title. And theres actually a sequel called Driven.
Why are the numbers on the door backwards then? Why is he driving on the wrong side of the car? The wrong side of the street? Granted, I haven't watched the film, but that's the first thing I noticed. The reversal of everything after that long profile shot of him sitting in the car after being stabbed.
housefly ma nobody cares about the fake cash-in book sequel. The point of this completely reconfigured-to-the-point-of-unrecognizability film is the symbolism, not the characters per se.
Shoot I just realized the painting on the wall at 5:22 is water, resembling the river that the frog and scorpion in the story were meant to cross. Irene goes back and forth, but Driver never goes to her room besides in the beginning before Driver knew about Standard. Driver knew he was a scorpion and could never cross without taking out the frog.
Notice how the shadows make it look like Bernie is picking the driver up into the air at first. And it's actually the Driver letting his limp body down. That's good cinematography.
He basically said shake hands not knife to stomach 😂😂 he was a dirty bastard and the driver knew it which is why he smiled when the dude was like lets go to the car 😅😅😅
This is now a bona fide Classic. Maybe a Cult Classic if you will. Casting of Albert Brooks was brilliant . It was a total sucker punch setup for us Boomers who had seen him play the wimpy kind of guy .
Would be funny if Driver walked into the restaurant with his hands up like he was holding a steering wheel, just going "brum brum brrruuuummm brum brum" then pretended to pull a skid as he sat down for his meeting. Bernie would be dead inpressed.

Mind blown :D
The smile at 2:22 almost tells me that the Driver knew what's going to happen - but it had to be done.
this genuinely might be my favorite scene out of any and all media. the music, shots, color, and the fact that the movie ends. i love me a sad ending.
This scene is so beautiful it makes me want to cry even though it’s two dudes stabbing each other
2:21 a scorpionic smile
Transformation. Death and rebirth. Like the scorpion. Wouldn't you agree?
The symbolism and tone of this film is unmatched in Hollywood.
the fact that she's still down after that elevator stomping. everything.
She realized he did it to protect her.
At 2:49-2:50, it appears Brooks's character gestures to The Driver to finish him off.
Only about 9 Minutes of screen time regarding Albert but quite a memorable 9
Ryan did not blink for a whole minute. How many years did he spend practicing?
It can happen when you space out and think deeply on a subject.
It's in some people's nature
TheDrunkPencil you know this movie has like no budget. CGI is probably out of the question.
I reckon they shot it in slow motion, so they could keep the eyes nice and steady, but then spread up the pan up the leg
Akakij Gennadjev Dude, I can go half an hour without blinking
I believe Drive evokes strong emotion because people instinctively sense that it represents the last breaths of a way of life that can no longer exist. Throughout all of history, you could ride off into the sunset like Shane on his horse, or the Driver, in his car, and escape the life you had. In the age of internet connected smartphones filming and tracking every one at all times, there is nowhere to run to where your past won't follow you. Being able to disappear into the cityscape like the Driver is a liberty that is gone forever.
I think this is what causes a sense of nostalgia to come over me when I watch, or reflect on, the film.
Tell that to Brian Laundrie!
Bull shit if you live without a cell phone and move at night time then chances are you can get away with numerous things
@@davidosako4680I like how you’re just being reactionary like a hipster because you don’t want to agree.
Scorpion silhouette when he kills Bernie. Beautiful...
This film was amazing. Such great performances and a fairly simple plot as well as beautiful music. This is incredible.

Before watching Driver "What's the deal with this song?"
After watching Driver: 🎵Real human being, and a real hero...🎵
This scene is so damn good. Bernie and driver look at each other almost in admiration because they both know they are going to try and kill one another. Driver leaves wounded and will have to watch his back for life as he leaves behind the money and Bernies corpse for the his cronies to find.
I cant believe this came out 10 years ago. Holy fuck I'm getting old.
9 actually
Yeah man, it's terrifying. When this film came out, 2001 seemed like a looooong time ago.
Why did he let himself get stabbed?
To Stab back hoping to get more of a vital area @@ToruSatoHD
I really love how the main character was smart enough to let the guy stab him first so he can let the dude who just stabbed him get distracted by stabbing him in a fatal area
it was a truly strategic move
I mean you aren't really going to react that fast when you turn your back to a switch blade stabbing you in the stomachv😂😂😂😂
How do you know he "let" him?
The smile he gives off at the table said he knew it and wanted to see what the guy would do if a man smiles like that at you across the table after you said he's going to look over the shoulder for the rest of his life then that guy knows or plans on not living and possibly taking him with him which is why he stabbed that dude back 😂😂😂 he was waiting and knowing what is going to happen the second he goes to the trunk
what's sad is the amount of people thinking this was about driving and cars and hated the movie. hopefully they returned later to see the actual plot and get it.
The greatest speech in modern crime film history
I have been trying to find this part for sooo dang long!!!
_yy6 _ just own the movie?
He probably survived. Not a bad wound and didn't bleed too much.
There's a word for this kind of feelings: sublime.
One of my favorite movie scenes ever!!!
He’s dead….
You can always rely on a comic actor to execute a serious performance, because a) comedy is harder, and b) deep down, all the best comedians are ferociously angry
Right after I watched the movie, I downloaded the full OST.
He dies in this scene. Comes back to life in another reality.
Yes indeed he came back as god in only god forgives
I was rooting so much for him to be alive
he is
There is a sequel called driven with the same character. Just look for it.
Out of all the places the guy could stab him he goes for the gut, if he went for the throat he would probably have survived due to bloodloss and shock incapacitating the Driver.
Grumpy gosling stands a whole foot and some inches over Bernie
Shock just doesn’t affect the driver, it’s not how he is
Guy underestimated wrong guy thought the dude wouldn't stab him back probably use to stabbing someone and the guy is in so much pain or shock he's focused on wounds but the drive is different he let the dude get him first to show him how to one stab kill someone
That's why real life knife fights are bad because the person trying to stab the person has in his head that he won't get hurt lol
One of the best endings of all time…it’s the smile Gosling gives because HE KMOWS what’s coming and he knows he deserved it but at the same time so did Brookes character
Dude shaved the eyebrows for this role to present stone cold ambiguous intensity. One of my favorite movies.
A great film. Truly epic. Even for a crime movie.
When I saw him leave all that money behind, it broke my heart.
I wish that song would play in my head all day
I'd like to take a moment to point out the car the Driver uses in this movie.
He's literally me
Should’ve just revoked his LA privileges and called it a day.
I can feel his sadness
Unusual (and refreshing) that the final boss that the two Gentile lovers must overcome is a Jewish usurer. The writer Amini is a Persian no less! At least one Jewish producer so I guess it's a Kosher film. The ethnic semiotics is fascinating. There's always a subtext to be read for those who have eyes to see it but I'm still surprised to see this one got past the gatekeeper. Great film.
The Scorpion and the Frog
Such an Amazing scene, playing back and forth not many scenes like this ever
Masterpiece!!! TOP 20 MOVIES OF ALL TIME.
I love the fact that he doesn't mention his name 🔥
People think driver died. But he didnt. Those who enjoy reading this was based of a book of the same title. And theres actually a sequel called Driven.
housefly ma the director of the movie said driver doesn't die also
Why are the numbers on the door backwards then? Why is he driving on the wrong side of the car? The wrong side of the street? Granted, I haven't watched the film, but that's the first thing I noticed. The reversal of everything after that long profile shot of him sitting in the car after being stabbed.
Gotcha. I haven't seen the film. Just going by what's presented here.
Alex W you dumb fuck lmao
housefly ma nobody cares about the fake cash-in book sequel. The point of this completely reconfigured-to-the-point-of-unrecognizability film is the symbolism, not the characters per se.
Shout out to all the loners out there, myself included.
Thanks bruh. You too.

Heyo
Cheers
Relatable
His personality reminds me of myself people think I’m weird but I’m just being me.
How come no one attempted to splice Bernie's dialogue into Marlin from Finding Nemo/Dory?
Great film. Stylish with some great performances.
I cried like a baby after first watching this movie.
This film was so well made got to watch this again
Shoot I just realized the painting on the wall at 5:22 is water, resembling the river that the frog and scorpion in the story were meant to cross. Irene goes back and forth, but Driver never goes to her room besides in the beginning before Driver knew about Standard. Driver knew he was a scorpion and could never cross without taking out the frog.
You can also see a scorpionish figure on his back in the scene where two of them are struggling and their shadows are cast.
Best role I ever saw Albert Brooks play!
Albert would make a convincing Harvey Weinstein
This clip belongs in the pantheon of perfect cinema.
Notice how the shadows make it look like Bernie is picking the driver up into the air at first. And it's actually the Driver letting his limp body down. That's good cinematography.
Bernie/Albert Brooks also plays in Taxi Driver he is Bettsies annoying co-worker 👍🏻
A great film and massively underrated
I always wonder if Bernie would have truly honoured that deal?
Watch the film again.
Bernie is the only character who never tells a lie in it...
Great ending even though there’s a bit of a debate weather he actually died or not. Which I might add weather he lived or not he’s still a hero
He’s alive mate. This is based on a book series and the second one is called Driven.
whether *
This film is a masterpiece love it so much
So sad how she went to knock on his door and no one was there. I thought he died until he blinked and the music started playing, good directing.
Soundtrack is so great, just realized this song is used in Adam Curtis documentaries
Whats the name of it?
